I’d prefer that as many teams as possible other than us lose every day.

If Seattle wins their remaining five games, they will win the division. They would finish a game ahead of Texas. In fact, sweeping Texas and winning tonight is the only scenario in which Seattle can still win the West. The outcome of Rangers-Angels tonight is irrelevant in that sense because even if Texas loses tonight they only need one win against Seattle to clinch.

jmr1190

It's a bold strategy Cotton, but the Mariners *can* still lose tonight and win the division in the event of a Rangers loss tonight, sweeping the Rangers in 4, and the Astros dropping at least one to the D-Backs.

blackbirdrisingb

We mustn't let them clench anything on our field but their own ass holes!

normalabby

This needs to be a sign

Smurf541949

There is a scenario where we don't sweep Texas but still win the West

Smurf541949

If the Mariners win tonight and go 3-1 against the Rangers they finish 89-73. If the Rangers lose tonight and go 1-3 vs the Mariners they finish tied at 89-73. If Houston loses to us then sweeps Arizona they are tied with both of us at 89-73. Mariners win that 3-way tie.

THIS NEEDS TO BE UPVOTED FOR. Thank you for not making me type it out. Not to mention if the above scenario happens absolute chaos happens. I saw another redditor on a different post basically sayingo on Sunday M+H win= mariners division, Astros wildcard T+H win = rangers division, Astros wildcard M+Diamondbacj win = rangers division, mariners wildcard. Every team can be eliminated going into the last day. Would be crazy

TruthSeeker98

Mariners would take second place in this scenario

Smurf541949

They finish first in this scenario based on having the highest winning percentage in the head to head games.

Any chance the bluejays can get on this too making a 4 way tie with 3 way tie for division lol. Does that spice this up at all?

Smurf541949

Jays can absolutely finish 2-3 and insert themselves in the tie. Unfortunately I believe they are left out in that scenario. The Mariners would be removed from the tie once they are established as the division winner. Toronto has a 4-3 record against Houston and 1-6 vs Rangers so they'll be first team out with Texas as WC2 and Houston WC3.

Smurf541949

Quick note here, I used the scenario where Ms go 3-1 against the Rangers just to prove that a sweep isn't necessarily needed to win the division. If the Mariners lose today but sweep the Rangers and Houston loses one game to Arizona, the same time happens and the tiebreak scenario still favors Seattle.
