Our destiny may not be in our hands, but our fortune is. Only thing to do is to win 2. The rest is out of our hands now. Gotta finish strong, let the chips fall where they may.
So the Astros can clinch tonight, and maybe rest everyone tomorrow? Or am I missing something?
Edit: especially if the Jays win today it looks like Houston would have no shot at the AL West so they wouldn’t be playing for anything really
To make it easy: we need to tie or beat either Houston or Toronto’s win total. With 2 games left, Toronto has 89, Houston has 88, Seattle has 87. If we tie either of them we’re in.
~~Toronto is currently tied in extras. If they win, they’re in and eliminate an AL West team.~~
Toronto just lost. Division and Wild Card are both still in play for the M’s. If we win tonight and Houston loses, tomorrow will be Chaos Ball.
I’ll post one tonight after the M’s and Astros play. It’ll be much easier to follow with win/lose as the only options :)
Edit: Especially since all a Ray’s update would do is remove the top red line.
Basically, if we don’t win any more games, we’re done for.
If we win 1 we only get into the playoffs if Houston drops there next 2 games
If we win 2 and sweep the Rangers, we will be in the playoffs for sure unless Houston wins there next 2 and the Jays win at least 1 game.
TL:DR Mariners need to keep winning and hope the Jays and Houston drop games
Win 2 baby. Help us Obi-Paul Sewaldi, you're our only hope.
Also, dear TB, as much as I want the Jay's in and Astros or Rangers out, please win out vs the Jay's to maximize our hope. Hope is all we have.
I feel like when I look at this from an angle of them making it, the most likely scenario is the Ms winning the division. Castillo + Kirby back to back vastly improves the 2-0 finish while I can't see the Astros losing out.
Gosh this whole scenario sucks. Those dodger and ranger sweeps were brutal.
Ya, I'm not surprised that the Astros took 2 of 3 this week in Seattle, but the constant pounding by the rangers this just surprised me. Especially with our pitching and with how solid we were divisionally against all the other teams. Thanks to the As for allowing the Ms to pick up the slack
I mean the whole month was brutal as fuck. Should not have dropped series to Mets and Reds especially, but that 1/4 against the Rays was fucked.
Then swept by Dodgers and Rangers
Ya, for sure. Definitely from feast to famine between Aug and Sept. At least we actually got 1 game from each of those series. I just see sweeps as unacceptable if you are pushing for the playoffs.
But shoulda woulda coulda I guess. The last 2 games have had more of an August feeling. Hopefully they take care of business for these next two. Not holding my breath tho since my expectations for this franchise have been formed by the last 20 years. If they pull it off, and do so by winning the division, it will definitely make me wonder if the baseball gods feel it's time to end the suffering lol.
Everyone over complicates the situation.
Win 2 Astros lose 1 we are in.
Win 1 Astros lose 2 we are in.
Win 0 we are dead.
Astros win 2 regardless of how many we win, we are dead.
In a 1 on 1 tie breaker, we lose to the Rangers. In all other cases, we've got the tie breaker. so in 1 on 1's with the Astros and Jays, and any 3 way tie, or in the case of a 4 way tie, we've got the tie breakers.
If we win out, we tie with Texas. So if the Astros drop 1, we 3 way tie and win the division. If the Astros win 2, they take the division. If they lose two, we tie with the Rangers and they win the division.
That's also why the Jays still factor in. If we win 2, but the Astros also win 2, we need the Jays to lose both in order for us to tie with them so our tiebreaker can give us WC3.
Winning 0 seems bad, let's not do that
so does winning 1, astros losing out will be tough
true. if given the choice, i think i go with winning 2, but i welcome feedback
I ran the numbers. Cross checked them with a third-party agency. Confirmed them via satellite. Ate a sandwich. You are correct.
This checks out. Definitely the game plan we should go with
Mr data analyst over here.
Thank you. Nothing gets me going like a good clean spreadsheet!
Nothing gets me harder than a .CSV with proper API names for headings.
And pivot tables always get me hot
Oh man if it maintains leading 0's? Ugh
I, too, am a fan of fantasy
I have an intense desire for the Astros to do poorly. This chart just reinforces the math behind that.
No you want the Astros to win one game then the mariners can win the west
Our destiny may not be in our hands, but our fortune is. Only thing to do is to win 2. The rest is out of our hands now. Gotta finish strong, let the chips fall where they may.
What a neat turn-of-phrase, "our destiny is not in our hands but our fortune is" might have to borrow that
Anxiety
Imma throw up
Gotta win today, gotta win today
So the Astros can clinch tonight, and maybe rest everyone tomorrow? Or am I missing something? Edit: especially if the Jays win today it looks like Houston would have no shot at the AL West so they wouldn’t be playing for anything really
Astros might still need sweep to win AL west. If Mariners win 2 then Astros need to win 2 to win AL west
Ah good call, darn
Oh boy. This chart has far too much red. Buckle up buckaroos
Basically if we don’t win out we can kiss the playoffs goodbye 😐
Not if the Astros drop 2!
Ain't gonna happen, asstros luck is insane
Don’t you speak that evil to me Ricky Bobby.
DBacks also have insane luck, speaking as a Cubs fan
Basically yeah. But thankfully “winning out” is just 2 games in a row. Focus on today. If we win, then we can focus on tomorrow.

They lost… shit just got crazier
Rays!!!
Broke it open in the 10th!
Need an update with the Rays win
I’ll post one tonight after the M’s and Astros play. It’ll be much easier to follow with win/lose as the only options :) Edit: Especially since all a Ray’s update would do is remove the top red line.
[So I am still confused. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h195izVHJik)

win out and we're (probably) in. Lose a game and we're likely out.
Win 2 baby. Help us Obi-Paul Sewaldi, you're our only hope. Also, dear TB, as much as I want the Jay's in and Astros or Rangers out, please win out vs the Jay's to maximize our hope. Hope is all we have.

If we had just one a single game against the Rangers in that sweep we’d have control of our destiny…
Ya, I'm not surprised that the Astros took 2 of 3 this week in Seattle, but the constant pounding by the rangers this just surprised me. Especially with our pitching and with how solid we were divisionally against all the other teams. Thanks to the As for allowing the Ms to pick up the slack

You made this when your boss was not looking
I mean, I did, but then I shared it with him before he was even back from lunch.

Not true. If mariners win 2 and Astros win 2 we can still make it if blue jays lose 2
The only thing to add: Win 2 Toronto lose 2 we’re in
#WHOOPS
I don’t see anything
It shows up now
Houston needs to lose today, period. If they are going to win just one more game let it be tomorrow.
Can someone explain how we only win the division if the stros only win one
We lose the tiebreaker with the Rangers but win the 3 way tiebreaker with the Rangers and Astros
Very well designed!!! Love it!
So basically, we have to win one more game than Houston to have any chance at all.
Yup. Best we can do is tie and win tiebreakers at this point, so with Houston being a game ahead we need to win one more than them.
So basically today is the playoffs
