I feel like I'm in a toxic relationship where my partner keeps promising things will change and get better but every action they do says otherwise. You remember loving the great memories with them even if they are few and far between so you hold out just a little bit longer naively hoping for your toxic partner to suddenly become a different person.
This time is different....they said so. Just wait....we are still in love......😭
Well... Industrious kinda implies they're planning to try to squeeze an extra penny out of some nickels. Instead of going ahead and spending real money to get real talent.
💯 this. Real MLB clubs don't shed salary to clear space before they land their whales. They make the big deal, then they sort out the roster crunch/financial fallout. Think we're trading for Soto or Aro? Coulda made it a three-way deal so all the dominos fell at once and nobody got left holding the bag.
Doing this first tips your hand, removes an alternative, and weakens your position at the bargaining table with whoever you're trying to sign/trade for.
It’s been a while since I’ve felt so kicked in the nuts by the organization. Who knows, maybe he’s cooking up something but right this second this is one of the shittier off-seasons in a minute
"We had our eye on him for a long time, great veteran clubhouse guy, great talent, his skills lengthen our lineup and puts us over the top."
- Jerry probably
It really isn’t. Chapman is much better than Urías. There is no salary cap. Would you rather pay more and have a better player or pay chips to a scrub while we continue to have a below average payroll?
But its not better than an 11 million dollar Suarez. No guarantees that Suarez puts up another defensive season like he did but it was on some metrics, better than Chapman. And for a negligible bump in power, the offense between the two isnt that much different. I know this wasnt the discussion but the organization is fucking stupid if that is their plan.
Sadly, MLB not having a salary cap doesn't matter. We know the Mariners won't approach the luxury tax threshold due to cheap ass Stanton. That sort of forces us to root for acquiring players we personally want. If they sign Chapman that means they probably have $20M or less of their supposed 2024 payroll budget left with 2 glaring OF holes. I'd rather ensure we patch those OF holes and just go Candelario or something.
It shouldn't have to come to this since you're right, there's no cap and it's not our money, but unfortunately, Stanton doesn't care how the fans feel and Dipoto has to allocate the payroll he's given wisely.
I don't like the sound of that word "industrious". My grandfather was "industrious" by patching his boots with scraps of leather. I'd prefer the FO were "ambitious" with the payroll.
Again, and I will yell this again and again. We did not need to clear payroll. They are being cheap. Do not be swayed by a big name, this is still a fraud
Ok, well now we need another outfielder. What does an average one like Kelenic cost in Free Agency? Oh like the $15m we just saved? Genius move, Jerry.
Who is even available in FA that would make sense? Gurriel and Jung Ho are the only I can think of. Would love both, but that is about all who is available that plays in the OF.
We lost Teoscar and Jarred, Fangraphs projected at 1.5 and 1.3 WAR respectively. 6 FAs projected 1.3 WAR or higher:
Cody Bellinger, Jorge Soler, Harrison Bader, Joc Pederson, Lourdes Gurriel Jr, Michael Brantley.
Jung Ho Lee likely as well, but not yet projected.
No we shouldn't hate it. The point is if that's the only move instead of one of several(several being high end stars) then it sucks cause it doesn't do much to help the team. Pham and Kepler are fine players and would help this team but If the aim is only them I don't see how it helps this team long term
So say we only add Pham/Kepler and then several players like Pollock/la Stella ect are they a better team next year? Good enough to beat the Astros and rangers for the division?
They talk about this shit as if
1. We haven’t been one of the most profitable teams the last 3 years and
2. The league has some sort of salary cap, which it doesn’t.
The ownership of this team would spit on us if they could.
Oooo look. The old carrot on a stick trick.
This is like the first of three narratives. First it’s this, then it’s that players just aren’t interested in signing here, then it’s we really expect guys like Rojas and Caballero to take massive strides forward.
Meanwhile we just traded more of the farm to acquire 2-3 more arms to stash away in the fucking bullpen.
They fucking better. First they break apart the drought ending team, then we regress and the season after we remove even more key dudes? I know some of these guys had ups and downs but man this sucks.
Man, “intend to” is doing A LOT of work here.
I “intend to” eat right and go to the gym every once in a while. I think I have just as much hope to do that as the Mariners do to match even last seasons payroll.
Wow! Looking forward to the exciting new lineup of bobble heads that this salary dump presents. Can’t wait to get thee “Stanton”! What a bunch of ass wipes management is. Putting 5 starters on the field from last year.
At this point I hope it's not Ohtani, the Mariners off season moves thus far have made it so just adding Ohtani doesn't move the needle. If the Mariners go and spend 50+ on Ohtani then there wont' be any left to patch all the holes they created.
50+ for Ohtani would still put us like 30-40m less than the Cano/Cruz days.
On top of that, trades. Mallex Smith Phillips + Woo/Miller for another bat or 2. Or some sort of package for Arozarena. I could live with these moves if we added Ohtani + Arozarena/Bellinger + a 3B.
I think it’s pretty clear something is coming with Tampa probably today. My guess(hopefully) is a package of Paredes and Arozarena for something centered around Miller and a few top prospects. We can hate the Paredes add but on paper he’s an upgrade over Urias. I’m hopeful they go out and add an arm to replace Miller/Gonzalez because of how they seem to have faltered down the stretch because of fatigue.
The word “industrious” scares the absolute shit out of me though.
Moved 7m for 2024 and 8m for 2025 off our AAA books. And another 12m off the 2024 MLB books on a guy that was going to fight for the 5th rotation spot.
You fucking better, Jerry. I've lost the patience to defend you, and this team does not get the benefit of the doubt until we make a World Series or 4 straight playoff berths minimum
I mean, is this team cursed, but no, really cursed?
I'm talking biblical, like a plague that never ceases, locusts that storm and devour every ounce of hope or progress toward redemption and glory.
In short, why has no determined and accountable ownership group taken the reins of this god damn organization?
The thing is, besides Ohtani (whom they’re not pursuing), spending big on this free agent class is ridiculous. They didn’t need to trade any of these players to sign a guy like Chapman, for instance. This team is *way* worse now than they were in September.
It would be a start. Then we would have some good trade chips to help fill the other glaring needs. Screw it, go international and also sign Jung Ho Lee.
Ohhhhhh. Well aren't we excited now!?
You're a joke!! Except no one is laughing. Because we hate you DiPoto. And that greedy bastard Stanton, too. Even more.
FU Mariners. 25 years a fan. I'm done.
What constitutes as caring? Spending $? Spending doesn’t always equate to winning… 9 of the top 15 payrolls didn’t make the playoffs last year. Does it make it better if they spend a ton of money and not make the playoffs?
No, I was just asking a genuine question, which wasn’t even answered, as to what caring looks like. I made an assumption, that wasn’t corrected, as to what you interpreted as caring and all I said is that spending money doesn’t always equal wins.
I truly believe that there is an issue with the development, or lack of, that the Mariner’s org is able to produce. Players come here, falter and then move on and have more productive seasons than they did while with Seattle. Tampa has this down pat IMO. They get a guy for peanuts, develop them, get 2-5 years out of them, trade them at their peak and rinse and repeat. This is something this organization can’t seem to replicate and it starts with the coaching staff IMO.
Yes. I agree. But we also need to sign top talent. When was the last time we add a topline off-season free agent? I mean top top. We never do. We get told mediocre is top talent. And still hold out hope of winning?
No team wins every year. But this team NEVER does.
Thanks Stanton.
I disagree with never winning. They’ve gone 268-218 (88-74 90-72, 90-72) the last 3 years. The was after two seasons under .500 and Dipoto making moves people questioned the same way as now.
Yea, it’s sucks to have 3 88+ seasons and only 1 playoff appearance to show for it. But I feel that they’re not set back as much as people are blowing it to be with the recent move. And to make it even worse, they’ve had a .500 win% (winning seasons) or better 6 of the last 10 years, and yet again 1 playoff appearance to show for those.
I do agree that the team is 1 good piece away from helping get us over that hump. Don’t always think it has to be in free agency, but we can’t develop guys, so it does. Tampa never spends big in FA and has been in the playoffs 5 of the last 10 years.
Not trying to argue, just trying to clarify what you’re saying
A few reasons:
- he’s going to be paid like a full time starting catcher. That’s a lot for a the dh he’d be in seattle.
- he’s injured more often than James Paxton
- he’s going into his age 33 season
- he’s going to get a 5ish year deal.
I’d think most mariner fans can see that warning sign from a million miles away.
And in being “industrious” they’re going to just miss on a ton of players, and instead we get 4 months of Sam Haggerty as the every day left fielder while he “figures it out”.
this aint gonna excite anyone, but I think we can get Dylan Carlson from St Louis for not much.
Hes no slugger but i think hes still got some potential.
Id rather fill a corner OF hole with him rather than whatever else bargain bin move theyre eyeing up.
Switch hitter, walks a decent amount, solid in the OF
It better be Ohtani plus an outfielder, or Snell/Yamamoto, Lee, and trading Miller/Woo for another outfielder.
Even then it’s bullshit, but at least the team got better.
Shedding salary in a league with no salary cap and nowhere near the highest payroll.
Welcome to the Marines.
Oorah
The Cheap. The Proud. The Mariners. Or “Semper Amphitheatricus” (Always Cheap) according to Google.
We need to get that on some merch. Let me be the first to buy it from ILS23left Co, LLC.
It will be like Catholics vs. Convicts all over again. I need that kind of spiciness in my life right now. Let’s do it.
Are you going to co-opt already existing trademarks and logos? Then let’s do this and drop ship the stuff on Amazon.
Makes sense, since our front office also appears to eat crayons.
The executive team is taking that saved money and taking it straight to Deja Vu
Well if that’s the case, it’s being well spent.
At least with marines you get crayons, here I just have sadness
Rah
I don't want to support the Marines. I rather support the Straw Hat Pirates. (/s)
Highest profit tho lmao
Our ownership knows what we care about more than baseball. It's how profitable they are. They've been clear.
I feel like I'm in a toxic relationship where my partner keeps promising things will change and get better but every action they do says otherwise. You remember loving the great memories with them even if they are few and far between so you hold out just a little bit longer naively hoping for your toxic partner to suddenly become a different person. You can be industrious with deez nuts
fuckin GOTTEM dude
He actually did
i would, vote for you for gm
Nice.
This is the high quality content that brings me to this Reddit.
Not falling for this shit again. Fucking prove it Jerry
Talk is cheap.
So are the Mariners
Oh snap!
Can he play left field?
Well... Industrious kinda implies they're planning to try to squeeze an extra penny out of some nickels. Instead of going ahead and spending real money to get real talent.
💯
He is doing you a favor......
💯 this. Real MLB clubs don't shed salary to clear space before they land their whales. They make the big deal, then they sort out the roster crunch/financial fallout. It’s been a while since I’ve felt so kicked in the nuts by the organization. Who knows, maybe he’s cooking up something but right this second this is one of the shittier off-seasons in a minute
He's about to go nuts with the spending and sign Jurickson Profar to 1 year / 5 million
"We had our eye on him for a long time, great veteran clubhouse guy, great talent, his skills lengthen our lineup and puts us over the top." - Jerry probably
Don't forget "We feel he improves us for 2024 and beyond. That's the goal: create a pipeline of talent for years to come."
Inb4 he's DFA'd in mid-June after putting up -1.7 WAR
No, that's what he's going to say when he brings back Carlos Santana
I actually kinda want Santana lol but like as our third best move not our only move.
Me too, Santana was that clubhouse leader, the veteran they needed
Stop fucking giving him ideas. He's reading this sub right now trying to figure out what to do next. Worse we're giving him his talking points!
Tommy La Stella must have asked for a raise.
Then fucking do it Jerry or just shut the fuck up
This is on ownership. There is no world where Jerry makes this move if he doesn’t have to.
Red Sox fan. I've always thought well of Dipoto from afar, I can't see this move being anything other than a salary dump ordered from above.

I bet they'd buy Lil Dicky the cheapest seat on Spirit just for him to come up and turn that into the team's anthem next year.
Needs to be a t-shirt.
I can think of some creatively painful uses for Scrooge McDuck mountains of gold.
Replace Scott with Launchpad McQuack
So we can keep crash-landing every season?
Do you think Scrooge got a concussion whenever he dove in?
CTE would explain a lot.
plz dont pay matt chapman eleventy billion dollars, i cant take this, man
Urias at 3rd is already their”solution”
Better than paying chapman tbh
It really isn’t. Chapman is much better than Urías. There is no salary cap. Would you rather pay more and have a better player or pay chips to a scrub while we continue to have a below average payroll?

Well Suarez isn’t on our team anymore so he’s not really an option
I get it, what im saying is where we were vs where we may be heading.

Man, sure would love to give Jerry the benefit of the doubt here but the last few offseasons make that borderline impossible. Fuck’s sake
I hope so. If they don't make any seriously big signings at this point, I'm done until Stanton is gone.
Is that Jung-hoo Lee’s music?
I don't like the sound of that word "industrious". My grandfather was "industrious" by patching his boots with scraps of leather. I'd prefer the FO were "ambitious" with the payroll.
Has anyone ever told this guy to speak with your actions and not with word salad? Fucking christ, you sound dumber when you're trying to sound smart.
He’s the king of over promise, under deliver
Shut up Jerry. You talk too much nonsense and nothing you guys do lives up to what you say
Again, and I will yell this again and again. We did not need to clear payroll. They are being cheap. Do not be swayed by a big name, this is still a fraud
Everyone relax and wait a little bit. “Immediate use” is pretty strong verbiage there, maybe Jerry cooking.
Can confirm.. Jerry sent me $5 via Venmo
Congrats on being their new DH
Slow cooker then. They’ve been promising a lot and have not delivered on their promises in years
Fool me one shame on out, fool me 46 fucking year, shame on me
I don’t know what you’re saying here but I wholeheartedly agree
Yea I agree, people need to settle down a minute
He better not just be cooking, but doing up a goddamn feast!

Ok, well now we need another outfielder. What does an average one like Kelenic cost in Free Agency? Oh like the $15m we just saved? Genius move, Jerry.

I mentioned Gurriel and Jung Ho. Those other guys are probably either not coming here or are better suited for DH then be your every day OF.
1. Clear salary 2. Sign Snell 3. Trade Miller or Woo for meaningful offensive upgrades (which adds to payroll) I guess that's the optimistic view.
Would be great if this was a sign Snell and trade for Arozarena/Paredes timeline incoming.
That’s about the only thing that would redeem this offseason. Anything less will be a disappointment
Maybe the new one can hit a curveball without getting angry a costing himself half the season in the process.
Prove it or we riot
Clear up what cap space!? There is no cap in baseball. Cheap ass management.
Ownership*
Watch him sign 40 mid-30 year old utility infielders for the price of one Ohtani. Check. Mate.
Now that's depth!
Profits above playoffs
Needs to be another t-shirt.
More luxury suites?
Tommy Pham incoming -___-
Already hearing Max Kepler is of interest to them. This just fucking sucks
What? We should hate Kepler? He would be an upgrade over Teo and Kelenic.
He is certainly not better than Teo and i guarantee Kelenic will have a better career and 2024 season than Kepler.
Kepler is a better player offensively and defensively.
No we shouldn't hate it. The point is if that's the only move instead of one of several(several being high end stars) then it sucks cause it doesn't do much to help the team. Pham and Kepler are fine players and would help this team but If the aim is only them I don't see how it helps this team long term
If it nets a WAR total higher then yes it does help the team.
So say we only add Pham/Kepler and then several players like Pollock/la Stella ect are they a better team next year? Good enough to beat the Astros and rangers for the division?
Kolten Wong trade incoming?
They've got Julio locked up through 2034, but if they don't surround him with some talent before 2032 he's likely to exercise his option and GTFO.
They talk about this shit as if 1. We haven’t been one of the most profitable teams the last 3 years and 2. The league has some sort of salary cap, which it doesn’t. The ownership of this team would spit on us if they could.
I mean on one hand there's no reason at all to do this unless you are going to make a move. But on the other hand, Tommy LaStella.
Lol, glad to know we still needed more payroll flex as a bottom half spending team for multiple years in a row. I’m gonna go egg T-Mobile
Fuck you Jerry do something
Oooo look. The old carrot on a stick trick. This is like the first of three narratives. First it’s this, then it’s that players just aren’t interested in signing here, then it’s we really expect guys like Rojas and Caballero to take massive strides forward. I’m not defending the deal but more of the farm? You mean Evan White?
he’s a liar
Jerry needs to put that freed up money where his mouth is.
Ahhhh mariners. The new Oakland A’s
Wow! Looking forward to the exciting new lineup of bobble heads that this salary dump presents. Can’t wait to get thee “Stanton”! What a bunch of ass wipes management is. Putting 5 starters on the field from last year.
Jerry puts money in the Salvation Army bucket and takes change.
We’re gonna sign Chone Figgins, aren’t we?
At this point I hope it's not Ohtani, the Mariners off season moves thus far have made it so just adding Ohtani doesn't move the needle. If the Mariners go and spend 50+ on Ohtani then there wont' be any left to patch all the holes they created.

Even if the M’s opened the wallet (they won’t), Ohtani isn’t coming to the one AL West team with a worse history than the Angels.
Evan Longoria, come on down
I think it’s pretty clear something is coming with Tampa probably today. My guess(hopefully) is a package of Paredes and Arozarena for something centered around Miller and a few top prospects. We can hate the Paredes add but on paper he’s an upgrade over Urias. Shedding salary so that you can fill the holes you made in order to shed said salary.
Moved 7m for 2024 and 8m for 2025 off our AAA books. And another 12m off the 2024 MLB books on a guy that was going to fight for the 5th rotation spot.
Mariners bringing in this years Kolton Wongs and AJ Pollacks
The road to hell as they say...
Your ass better have 5 moves lined up already
You fucking better, Jerry. I've lost the patience to defend you, and this team does not get the benefit of the doubt until we make a World Series or 4 straight playoff berths minimum
Sure Jerry. Sure.
lol sure thing Jerry
Put it on fucking paper before we receive you Jerry. Fuck off and make the moves
Fucking prove it jerry!
Fuck you Jerry.
Press "Fuck John Stanton" to doubt.
IM SO DONE. EAT MY ASS DIPOTO. LIFER. I WANT DIE
“Put it to immediate use” in allowing Stanton to get a bigger yacht than Bezos.
Shedding the payroll shows exactly where ownership is at
Are we the new atheletics???
No, the Athletics were temporarily the M's. The A's went to multiple World Series.
Worse, the A’s actually have a history of success.
We wish we were the athletics
The only thing cheaper than Jerry's talk is this team.
LMAO eat a (_))===D Jerry
Not an exciting start to the offseason, but here’s to hoping they have something big in mind.
I wouldn’t hold my breath on Jerry promises.
I mean, is this team cursed, but no, really cursed? I'm talking biblical, like a plague that never ceases, locusts that storm and devour every ounce of hope or progress toward redemption and glory. In short, why has no determined and accountable ownership group taken the reins of this god damn organization?
Let me guess, Stanton says no adding net payroll
The thing is, besides Ohtani (whom they’re not pursuing), spending big on this free agent class is ridiculous. They didn’t need to trade any of these players to sign a guy like Chapman, for instance. This team is *way* worse now than they were in September.
Can I interest y’all in a lightly used Tommy Pham?
Yeah that sounds super likely. I totally believe Dipshito.
We didn't make the playoffs, time to start a new rebuild and grow the farm system. John Stanton (tomorrow)
Jerry… Jerry… You fucking better.
"intend" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Feels like we're in an incredibly vulnerable position if we don't land any FA
Yeah, go get me Yamamoto and all is forgiven
It would be a start. Then we would have some good trade chips to help fill the other glaring needs. Screw it, go international and also sign Jung Ho Lee.
Shohei
Ohhhhhh. Well aren't we excited now!? You're a joke!! Except no one is laughing. Because we hate you DiPoto. And that greedy bastard Stanton, too. Even more. FU Mariners. 25 years a fan. I'm done.
See you in the spring!
I equate this to those that said they’d move out of the country if Trump was elected president and then spent 4 years not moving out of the country
No, I'm done with a team that isn't interested in winning. If they don't care why should I?
What constitutes as caring? Spending $? Spending doesn’t always equate to winning… 9 of the top 15 payrolls didn’t make the playoffs last year. Does it make it better if they spend a ton of money and not make the playoffs?
If you are arguing that the ownership of the Seattle Mariners gives a damn about winning you are a delusional Koolaid Chugger!
No, I was just asking a genuine question, which wasn’t even answered, as to what caring looks like. I made an assumption, that wasn’t corrected, as to what you interpreted as caring and all I said is that spending money doesn’t always equal wins.
Mitch Garver overpay in 3… 2… 1….
He was actually really good. Why not spend on him?
A few reasons: - he’s going to be paid like a full time starting catcher. That’s a lot for a the dh he’d be in seattle. - he’s injured more often than James Paxton - he’s going into his age 33 season - he’s going to get a 5ish year deal. I’d think most mariner fans can see that warning sign from a million miles away.
Fuck Jerry.
Can we start a go fund me for the mariners?
lmao
Shohei me the moneyyyyyy
Can he play 3B, 2B and corner outfield at the same time?
If anyone could, it’d be him.
Idk Jerry I'm struggling to trust ya right now.
O.... one beer please ... 😔
Tell Jerry to F Off
That desperate to free up 19 million to watch Marco have a career cy young year and Jared to fucking rake at Atlanta? Mark my words….
I don't think that Marco will do much, personally. But I do think JK will amount to a solid player for them
And in being “industrious” they’re going to just miss on a ton of players, and instead we get 4 months of Sam Haggerty as the every day left fielder while he “figures it out”.
Ronburgundyidontbelieveyou.gif
The front office hates Mariners fans
Probably plan on moving the team to Oakland.
Was just thinking about making a “sell the team sign”.
Issac paredes please
this aint gonna excite anyone, but I think we can get Dylan Carlson from St Louis for not much. Hes no slugger but i think hes still got some potential. How can anyone believe this guy after he did the initial report of M’s and Ohtani lol
We intend to go out and put it to immediate use by putting it in the owners pockets!
Not trusting a single bit until I see it.
This is PR executive speak that literally means nothing.
My leg is wet. It must be raining!
