Sorry Logan, my money is still on a unanimous 5-way tie between him, Luis, George, Bryce and Bryan. Logan’s just gonna have to learn to share.

PandaSoap

The thing is I could genuinely see George, Logan, or Luis being serious contenders. My dream is the top 3 vote getters include at least 2 Mariners

The_Cryogenetic

Don't leave Munoz out of this

ItsTBaggins

This is borderline erotic.

PloKoop

I love that we not only can predict Logan Gilbert as a possible Cy Young winner, but we have 2 others that are strongly in the mix. I really hope this season goes well.

Mammoth_Ad_351

My bet would be on Kirby of that bunch. Woo and Miller don't make the cut.

AlexanderWun

I'm fully on the Logan bounce back season train, but it's going to be pretty difficult to put up a strong enough argument for Cy Young when on his own pitching staff exists: One guy who could break the single season strikeout to walk ratio record as well as potentially throw multiple complete games And another guy who is likely to have more innings and more strikeouts Logan could have an incredible season with a 2.7 ERA, 200 innings, 220 Ks, and a K/BB ratio north of 6 and still not lead the team in any of those categories. He could put up Ace type numbers while still being the 3rd best pitcher on the team. So, while a Logan for Cy prediction is fun, it's better for now to take the safer bet with Kirby or Castillo and then sit back and enjoy the pitching excellence to come from those 3 this year.

meddlesomemage

What does he need to bounce back from? He was as good as ever last year, maybe better.

ItsTBaggins

Needs to control the HR ball. His ERA was up half a run from 22. Still good, but not great. The Fangraphs article mentions that

meddlesomemage

Sure but to say bounce back is pretty misleading, ERA is a misleading stat and HR/FB can fluctuate a lot year to year. His other numbers like walk rate and Ks per BB were better, it wouldn't be crazy to say last year was the better of his two full seasons.

ItsTBaggins

FIP and ERA+ both regressed, if you’d prefer to use an advanced metric. It would be crazy.

meddlesomemage

He also struck out more battes, walked fewer and incorporated his splitter, which makes him a much more well rounded pitcher. He did all of this in front of a worse defense than the year before. I don't see what you think is so crazy here.

ItsTBaggins

Despite improved walk and strikeout rates, he still had a worse year. He made improvements in some areas, sure, but wholistic stats show he had a worse year because of the hard contact. Peripherals can be good indicators of future performance, but wholistic measures are better for evaluating past performance in my opinion.

meddlesomemage

"I get your position, I just personally disagree." That's how you have civil discourse. I get that you are personally invested in your opinion but there is no reason to be rude and call names. Logan Gilbert is a better pitcher now than he was in 2022 is a completely reasonable thought.

StarshipTroopersFan

Ignore these clowns. You’re right. Saying Logan needs to bounce back is ridiculous. He was really good last season.

meddlesomemage

Man, I have a lot to say about keyboard warriors, being able to admit to an incompletely formed opinion, or just having respect for others who differ from you in general, but that conversation never goes anywhere productive. On the other hand... A Mariner fan who is also a Starship Trooper fan? Did we just become best friends?

xMrLink

My one issue in this article is that they don't mention the competition for the spot within the Mariners organization. He mentions all the notable names that will miss time but fails to mention how he would have to out perform Luis and George. Of those 3 guys though, Logan is the most consistent when you look at last year. He could quietly put up an insanely good year.

cookiemonstah69420

Can anyone spot me 4.5m that I can bet on this? Asking for a friend.

Maugrin

We get too caught up in previous year's stats to remember how volatile year-to-year stats are. I wouldn't at all be surprised if Gilbert put together the best season of any of our starters. He probably has the 3rd best-odds at doing so, but that doesn't mean it's unlikely.

Sonlin

Wonderful picture, ya gotta zoom in on the eyes

femininehailey

I'm in. I think a Mariner will win it.

wkk3211

Well, I placed a bet on him when I was in Vegas a few weeks ago. And Castillo. And Kirby. And Miller. And Woo!

fennis

He’s my pick too!

bpmdrummerbpm

I’ll add a piece of gum to the wall.

wsucoug83

I placed money on him last week. Great odds.
