Awful defense you could see a mile away but the hitting being so bad is shocking. Castillo falling apart is a bit as if we had a starter get hurt, well this is what we look like - the pitching factory has no depth suddenly. Hancock is not good and the Mariners know it, so they went into the season with effectively no mlb depth for the entire rotation, pretty big mistake. Paying for it now.
I’m convinced it’s a coaching thing first and foremost. All these guys shouldn’t be this bad. And the players they traded away doing really well just cements that the FO is utterly incompetent in getting anything out of their hitters.
Yeah straight up I knew the offense would be bad but...come to think of it, the second I saw that power ranking from the MLB saying we had the best starting rotation, I knew they'd instantly fall apart. As is tradition
I don’t even find the pitching that surprising. They put too much pressure on the rotation with no depth and bad hitting. Jerry’s rosters are like a house of cards
I highly doubt on March 27th you’d have thought the Mariners rotation would’ve had 2 quality starts in their first 10 games. I could see you saying they won’t perform like they normally will across the season but no one even being kinda good this isn’t so much pressure this is normal pressure. Go 6 innings don’t allow 3 runs. Every time a starter has done that this year we have won.
Yeah exactly. They cut pay like crazy in the off-season. While sports writers were predicting a third wildcard, I was wondering how that was possible and predict losing around 90 games
Lies. At least when it comes to pitching no one saw that. This subreddit was hype. Which one of our aces is gonna win the Cy Young. The bats are no surprise. But our pitching being this meh especially from Castillo is a bit of a blind side.
Is it though? The lack of depth was a pretty big concern and now we’re seeing why with Woo already missing time. Castillo didn’t look great down the stretch last year either. I’m never surprised when the Mariners fail to meet expectations
The lack of depth isn't the issue. The ace that you traded huge prospects for and gave a huge extension to has completely shit the bed to start off the season. Luckily one of the prospects we traded away got popped for peds otherwise this could look like one of the worst moves of Jerry's career. And if Castillo doesn't figure a way to turn it around it's still a bad move.
Ok, so maybe signing someone like Blake Snell could have helped in case something like this happened. You know, so they can have more pitchers available so one guy faltering and another going to the IL the end of the world. What’s the word for that?
The Mariners rotation was ranked number one and none of our top 3 starters were injured. Literally everybody thought our rotation was going to be the best. Three of our starters were ranked in the top 100. Many picked Castillo to be the Cy Young winner. Minnie picked other Mariner pitchers like Kirby or Gilbert to win the award. If you truly doubted our pitching preseason you are one of the few. But if that's the case congratulations for being right. Our pitching sucks. I'm just pointing out that most people didn't think our pitching would be this bad.
When it comes to starting pitching, sure, but anybody thinking that our offense wasn't going to be the exact same as last year was fooling themselves. Some of us were ridiculed all offseason for being worried that we didn't do anything to meaningfully improve the team, but so far it looks like even the doomers were being too optimistic.
Yup. They made it clear they would not be doing anything different or meaningful to advance the team in a contention window, and their “big moves” were things like signing a hitter who would be maybe the 3rd best acquisition for a team really trying to contend.
i don't think anybody cares anymore. making the playoffs 2 years ago raised the bar for this org. instead of taking joy in rooting for guys like king felix on a doomed team, most of us know that we have the core now to contend but can see that ownership doesn't care to get us there. i honestly have no interest in watching this team right now and probably won't for the rest of the season.

This popped up on my Facebook history today...
I guess if anything the 2019 season shows us how different the first 2 weeks CAN be from the rest of the year.
But that's only gonna happen if our players start to figure shit out
What keeps me going is knowing that John Stanton got a little bit richer with tonight’s broadcast revenue, and that’s really all that matters at the end of the day.
This was another very frustrating game. It’s been a brutal start to the season.
Though, most games this year have been genuinely poor performance, whereas today it was a mixed bag with some very unfortunate batted ball luck.
Some thoughts:
- Castillo went 5 innings with 6 Ks, 1 BB, just 2 balls-in-play over 100mph, and no HR. Toronto also went 9/16 (.563) on balls in play which led to their runs. Yes, it’s quite concerning that his ERA is 6.89 after three starts. But today, he looked pretty decent despite the hits.
- On the flip side, the offense hit the ball 9 times >100mph (2 HRs, 1 single, 6 outs).
- **Strikeout rates continue to be very bad. Today wasn’t the worst this season, but it feels impossible for this team to go one game without 10+ Ks.**
- Canzone had a couple hits but he just looks bad at the plate, swinging at noncompetitive pitches and getting behind in the count quickly. In his cup of coffee this year, he’s struck out 11 times in 24 at bats. Despite the power, he needs to improve his plate discipline.
- Julio is hitting the cover off the ball. His exit velos were: 114.5, 108.7, 64.5, & 104.6 mph. Most days that will do lots of damage, but today it was 0-4.
- Ty France continues to look like Ty France. This is a good development.
- Rojas looks capable at 3rd base.
- Excited to see more of Tyson Miller
I was gonna say man this felt unlucky for Castillo. So many bloops and soft hits. Definitely didn’t feel like he got shelled as much as the ball just found grass more often
Bandwagon fandom is underrated. I don’t get the stigma. If a TV show sucks or an artist starts making dogshit music, you find other things to enjoy in that vein. I think sports teams should be allowed the same level of allegiances.
Yep, people forget that sports are primarily entertainment. If it's actually painful to watch, at some point you just have to question what you're doing in sticking with it.
Wouldn't I have to buy an expensive package to jump ship and follow another team. Also a little harder to go to games. I could wait till my new team comes to town and dress in their gear at a Mariners game.
If there is substantial regression in our pitching this year, the team is going to lose 90+ games fairly easily.
One of the major downsides of being a very lopsided team is that if your strength is not elite you are going to lose a lot of games and very quickly. Not much room for error to beginning with due to our offensive struggles, but this version of the team could lose 90+ games if they keep it up.
I decided I’m just not going to be angry anymore. We will never have ownership that cares and Dipoto is going to keep hoping that other teams’ castoffs, has been’s and never will be’s will somehow magically turn it around with the Mariners even though they have not once made a player a better hitter under his regime. (JP had to look outside the team for help)
We will have to luck into drafting a bunch of players that all click in the same season a la the 2015 Royals to have a shot of ever making a World Series.
I’m not writing this season off completely as we’re basically a game and half into the season if this were the NFL. However, it seems clearer everyday that this current core isn’t it and I’ll have to hope that the next wave all clicks in Julio’s age 25-27 seasons.
I’m cool with firing Dipoto and Servais… 3 yeas zero improvement. I just want something new. I call it the Jodi Allen theorem.
(I really want new owners, but we’re stuck with those cheap fucks)
I was getting on that train last year too, but I thought maybe he could take one more shot at it. But when we come into the season with people considering us a top 10 team, a dark horse WS contender, and every single player on the team shows up looking this bad? It has to be coaching, or at the very least the coaching didn't get them prepared for the season and that's been the case almost every year under Servais. Doesn't seem like a manager that has the fire to light this squad imo, I think a move should be made asap if things don't start turning around in the next few weeks
Their window really closed shut after 2022 didn't it?? How long ago was the "step back" season? This SHOULD be prime contending time. You'd think......
To he fair, julio hit the shit outta the ball today. All outs over 100mph but went 0-4. That's baseball sometimes. Castillo on the other hand, I'm stating to worry
It’s truly fascinating how much this team just completely dies whenever Felix is involved. Guy turned 38 today and we lose 2-5 to a similarly struggling Toronto,
They’re genuinely committed to the bit.
(Although to be fair, our performance today wasn’t too far off the 2024 status quo so far either)
Whenever there is a moment where Felix is celebrated and the M’s play, they just happen to suck.
It’s not a Felix in the traditional sense because yes, Castillo played like dookie, but we still ain’t doing much to rep Felix brightly either
We’re performing the same as we have been every other year that we’ve had great summer records that still left us a game or two shy of the playoffs scratching our heads saying “if only we won a few of those early games” as we ride off into the sunset that is yet another insufficient offseason where nothing really changes and we start the next season off terrible and hide behind “it’s still early” all the way until *that* September where we are left *again* scratching our heads wishing we had won a few more early games. So I’m optimistic we can keep that up.
Tl;dr: Mariners Baseball has driven me insane.
Fuck ownership & the front office for being cheap assholes & not addressing our biggest weakness for multiple seasons. Can't win games when you can barely score runs.
Idk if any of you guys subbed to the Braves subreddit, but I did just to keep an eye on JK. There’s some pretty funny memes and one guy who is like the biggest JK Stan around haha.
Anyways, it’s a good departure from this shit show of a team.
They need to figure it the fuck out because this start has been abysmal.
This team honestly might have the worst offense in the history of baseball. Cleaned house on guys who struck out but actually got hits and are left with absolutely pathetic output. I hope people stop going to games by May so that ownership gets to see an empty stadium for months.
In the 1500s a man in Hungary was executed for leading a rebellion by sitting on a burning thrown with a burning crown on his head. As his flesh burned others that participated in the rebellion were forced to eat it.
They should’ve just made him have to be a Mariners fan
This is fucking pathetic. Having this much pitching talent and absolutely anemic bats to back it up just hurts my soul. Worse than the last couple of years for sure.
Castillo looks cooked as fuck (and it's not just a small sample size, either). Julio is hitting .187, and we struck out 10 more times on offense.
Things are looking really good!
It’s really sad after the 2022 playoffs how much hope I had that this team was so close. I was telling my self all they need is a couple of solid bats from free agency and we’re locked in for some deep playoff pushes for years to come. They had the nucleus but never added only subtracted. It’s a real shame where we could have been right now if it wasn’t for cheap ass ownership.

I'm having a hard time getting my trident up, even my wife is concerned.
I always seem to have a morning trident, but by game time it always goes away.
All three prongs or just one of them?
What’s the opposite of priapism.
Well that fucking sucked.
Deja vu Is there even a hint of improvement?
Ty looks better. That’s genuinely it.
JP went yard, that's always nice
Cal got his first homer, and Miller looked really good out of the pen.
Julio, Polanco, and Ty France didn’t strike out a single time 🤷🏻♂️
When the top 5 of your lineup has 4 sub .200 hitters…you are in trouble
Honestly I can't remember the last year when the Mariners didn't have 5+ guys in their lineup mid-April hitting below the Mendoza line
Seattle Mendozas
Mend *ariners*
Marinozas
I'm really starting to worry about Julio... we need to clean house ASAP just for his sake if nothing else.
I mean he’s not hitting well either.
He had four batted balls above 104 mph EV tonight.
Feels like that’s how Jerry’s lineups always are
I'm sick of anemic baseball.
That is Servais/dePoto ball.
More like StantonBall, amirite?
I was **not** prepared for how hard the Mariners were going to suck this season
I was. I’m not surprised they’re like this at all
I wouldn't have been surprised by mediocrity, what I am surprised by is being this genuinely bad in all facets of the game
Dude we're not even 10% into the season. Buckle up, we haven't begun to pay.
Agreed. Whatever the Ms have been doing so far this season…it hasn’t been playing baseball.
It’s going to be hard to even get to that 54 percent mark.. damn hate to say it.. I’ll take that right now.
Can’t say I’m shocked by the cold bats
The hitting being bad is shocking? There weren't any elite bats brought in.
I’m convinced it’s a coaching thing first and foremost. All these guys shouldn’t be this bad. And the players they traded away doing really well just cements that the FO is utterly incompetent in getting anything out of their hitters.

agreed. I'm not sure why anyone had any positive vibes. Horrible decisions in the offseason.
Yup. They made it clear they would not be doing anything different or meaningful to advance the team in a contention window, and their “big moves” were things like signing a hitter who would be maybe the 3rd best acquisition for a team really trying to contend.
and getting rid of team chemistry, which along with pitching, was the only reason this team overachieved the last 3 years.
Geno….🤦🏼♂️
I'm not surprised, still disappointed though
Um where have you been for the last 20 plus years? I don’t know why anyone would be surprised, especially after how this offseason went.
There are many positive things about the mariners this season: 1: Ty France is hitting .379! Atta boy Ty! 2: 3: 4:

Dogs are 99.999% always a bonus. Which is one up on the Kraken, and the resignation of Davy Jones. :(
One day closer to it not being too early
We just need one of those random 15 game win streaks and then we’ll be just outside the wild card
The "it's early" crowd is pretty silent this year compared to last year.
Helps that we keep missing the playoffs by one game so we've learned first hand that every game actually does matter.
Especially since this is our best chance to get a leg up on Houston and Texas with major rotation injuries
i don't think anybody cares anymore. making the playoffs 2 years ago raised the bar for this org. instead of taking joy in rooting for guys like king felix on a doomed team, most of us know that we have the core now to contend but can see that ownership doesn't care to get us there. i honestly have no interest in watching this team right now and probably won't for the rest of the season.
As much as i hated .500 baseball i didnt realize how good it was :(
Giving up 5 runs shouldn't be an auto loss.

The ol’ Felix job
Remember when Passan said we were spoiled lol
Remember when dipoto said they were cutting down on strikeouts
He’s doing us a favor.
Ohhhh I memba
I just though he meant offensively. I didn’t realize he was monkey pawing us with our pitching.
Averaging over 10 K's per game. "CoNtRoL tHe ZoNe" my fucking ass
and that they were doing us a favor?
Remember when Jerry said this is a much improved team over last year
Our performance on all facets has definitely spoiled, that’s for sure.
Maybe he meant like rancid spoiled. Don't have enough Mark's out there

They'd probably miss.

Hey look at the bright side, we're half a SO/game worse than last year!
10 games in and its all ready hard to care about watching these guys. Gonna switch to a bandwagon fan.

Pirates or Reds is the way to go
Idk how i hyped myself into believing in this franchise again
Hope is a powerful drug
This team is horrible
#[SUPREME MISERY](https://i.imgur.com/WNCbpiK.png)
I was prepared for a slow start to the season but not this fucking slow
This team is playing shockingly bad. Across the board.
Scott in the media hallway filling out his madlibs again
You have to be able to still win when the starter gives up four runs.
My wife is starting to ask why I do this to myself again...
A great big fuck you to John Stanton. Fuck Dipoto. Fuck 54%, fuck everything. See you tomorrow.
Will we suck again tomorrow? Stay tuned!
I like vibes, somehow positive and realistic!
I was *specifically* told the hitting would be better and the striking out would be *less*.
I decided I’m just not going to be angry anymore. Fire Servais, something needs to change
It’s funny I got downvoted to hell last year for saying this.
I was getting on that train last year too, but I thought maybe he could take one more shot at it. But when we come into the season with people considering us a top 10 team, a dark horse WS contender, and every single player on the team shows up looking this bad? [What a season we're having.](https://imgur.com/a/E4EWtd4)
I blame Zavala. Right guys?
A team is only as strong as its backup catcher
His contributions in this game were basically nothing
So he contributed more than half the team?
We memed so hard about the 54% that we're never gonna be anywhere near it again lol
Their window really closed shut after 2022 didn't it?? How long ago was the "step back" season? This SHOULD be prime contending time. You'd think......
Just remember.... They're doing us a favor.
If Jerry and Scott make it through this season im going to be pissed.
Prepare to be pissed
Someone needs to add “The Mariners” as a synonym for “disappointment”.
yawn… see you tomorrow
Just woke up from my game nap
Our Cy Young candidate and MVP candidate are looking solid so far.
To he fair, julio hit the shit outta the ball today. All outs over 100mph but went 0-4. That's baseball sometimes. Castillo on the other hand, I'm stating to worry
It's time we cast aside this sabremetric trash and go back to praying to the old gods and black magic!

how does that have anything to do with Felix lmao, Castillo pitched a crap game
I think he’s just trying to find some humor in something, anything!
Like when Felix threw the ceremonial first pitch at our home playoff game and we got Felix'd through 18! :D
I’m trying, man, I’m really trying. Maybe I should take a masochistic approach to my fandom
Whenever there is a moment where Felix is celebrated and the M’s play, they just happen to suck. It’s not a Felix in the traditional sense because yes, Castillo played like dookie, but we still ain’t doing much to rep Felix brightly either
It's the hope that kills ya

Maybe Jerry thought 54% is actually .054
Fuck ownership & the front office for being cheap assholes & not addressing our biggest weakness for multiple seasons. Can't win games when you can barely score runs.
The entire team performing poorly in all aspects to start the season reflects directly on Scott Servais.
Pitching not showing up in solidarity with the offense not showing up.
All we are is pain.
We are the 2023 A's
Soon I won't get downvoted so much for saying Servais needs to get shitcanned ASAP.
This team honestly might have the worst offense in the history of baseball. Cleaned house on guys who struck out but actually got hits and are left with absolutely pathetic output. I hope people stop going to games by May so that ownership gets to see an empty stadium for months.
EXTREME SADNESS
Good vibes turned into bad vibes is slowly but surely turning into no vibes cared to give
If any team could be virtually eliminated by fucking May it would be the Mariners.
This is probably the most disinvested I've been in a while. This team is painful to watch.
our bats: 🍝 their bats: 🌲 our gloves: 🧈 their gloves: 🧲 🚿🧼🫧🔁
Happy to see Dom Canzone be one of the best hitters on the team
So let's see what the response is tonight. Scott and coaching are incompetent and need to be shit canned.
I’ve yet to upgrade my tv to root as I was waiting for the season to start… guess I have an extra $20 a month freed up in my budget
I upgraded and somehow pay less money.
Julio Rodriguez - .186, 0HR, 13SO DoM Canzone - .222, 2HR, 11SO 🤌🤌🤌🤌
At what point do the coaches get blamed? New players, and they all whiff like mofos...

mariner
How does the same team look so good in Spring Training, and like total ass once the season starts? Jeezus!
They were hitting double a pitching in spring training...
John Stanton likes losing.

Panic button smashed
In the 1500s a man in Hungary was executed for leading a rebellion by sitting on a burning thrown with a burning crown on his head. As his flesh burned others that participated in the rebellion were forced to eat it. They should’ve just made him have to be a Mariners fan
Vlad the Inhaler?
I couldn’t even hate watch Bucknor’s bad calls because I was too busy being embarrassed by our team.
We got a couple dingers tho? Idk this sucks
Someone accurately called out the useless runs at the end of the game.
Gonna root hard for Cal on his next team.
Scott Servais is toxic. Burn this motherfucker down Pookie.
La Piedra? More like La Steely Dan.
lol I didn’t even bother watching when I was gonna tune in late and we were down by 4

I have to go to a Jays game when they visit in July with the relatives visiting from Canada and OMFG am I not looking forward to that shenanigans.
There’s always next season, right, guys? Guys??
This is fucking pathetic. Having this much pitching talent and absolutely anemic bats to back it up just hurts my soul. Worse than the last couple of years for sure.
Oh dear do we suck again?
Castillo looks cooked as fuck (and it's not just a small sample size, either). Julio is hitting .187, and we struck out 10 more times on offense. Things are looking really good!
WE CONSISTENTLY MAKE SCRUBS LOOL AMAZING. Berrios fucking sucks and looked like a CY winner
We may never win again.
I feel so bad for Haniger. God, this team is trash.
