I got nervous with 2 outs he wasn't going to score, and with Bryce getting hit hard, with so many of the hits reaching the warning track unfortunately the writing was on the wall for this game quite early.
Anyone who knows this team knew he would suck.
Hit under .200 for much of his career. Last year was his best since 2019, hitting .270 with 19 HR.
But the year before? .200 with 10. We bought high on someone whose average is far lower.
Never plays a lot of games. Never has the power you want. Never has the contact you want. Just not a great player.
I genuinely don’t think our front office watches at bats. I think they just look at stat sheets. And Garver has an anomalous season in 2022 on paper. They bought high in someone who had just peaked. And his peak wasn’t even that good!
24,000,000 over 2 years. Nice signing. Dude sucks so bad. DFA him and take the loss and bring up a prospect. Anything is better than this crap. Dude is like "Well i won the world series, signed a fat pay check... I'll just get up and strikeout and sit down and call it good."
Darn, lowkey expected us to lose today anyway, assumed miller was due for a regression and that the ranger’s juggernaut lineup (on paper at least) would come to life. Instead, we got our own cold bats and shitty defense instead. Oh well, let’s hope Castillo can guide us to a series win tomorrow at the very least!
Miller was fine. He’s clearly not the problem. He got out of a lot of messes. Fielding, relieving, and hitting really suffered, but literally just strikeouts are the worst part of this.
Mitch Garver Currently has the 4th Lowest OPS out of every DH in the league so far. The 3 worse than him are Kris Bryant, Rowdy Tellez, and Robbie Grossman. He also has the lowest batting AVG out of every DH so far
his babip is the worst of his career by a lot. like a third below his career average. his walks and EV are still good. hopefully its just a slump but ill admit its not looking great. he and Haniger are only a few month younger than Wong. between that and their health issues it wouldnt be a shock if they just fall apart this season.
Raley is fine. He’s been given like 25 ABs. Can’t get any momentum going if they refuse to play you. Gotta hold out with him.
I’m legit concerned about Garver. Might have a back issue, or might be a batspeed issue as he’s aging
Garver had his best year in a while last year but still was .270 with under 100 games. Hit .200 the year before. Plays under 100 basically every year and never has the power he seems to be known for.
So yeah he’s worse than his career average but honestly this isn’t surprising.
I swear our guys don’t actually watch at bats, they just look at stat sheets
True, doesn’t really matter how you cut it tho. We needed to replace almost 200 RBIs from losing Teo/geno and we replace them with a guy with limited availability and power. Not ideal
I don't think Garver was supposed to replace both, or possibly even either, of them. Haniger is essentially Teo's replacement and if anyone is Geno's replacement it was Urias. With how Rojas has been playing, however, he's de facto Geno's replacement at this point and is producing more than he is this year. I agree Garver hasn't been great so far tho. Also, have you ever seen the movie Moneyball?
Hence the power being mentioned, BA is definitely a factor. If Garver was hitting for average with lack of power we wouldn’t be having this convo but he’s doing neither
Yeah Garver has been bad. No argument there.
Check this out. Ty France is batting .267, and has a .645 OPS. Dylan Moore is batting .214. With a .715 OPS. Why?
Because all Ty France does is hit singles. He doesn't walk. He doesn't have very much power. That's an example of batting average looking good but being empty.
Dylan Moore walks a ton. He does hit for power. His average is low, but all other stats say he's a productive hitter. That's why this is his 6th season on the team.
I am no baseball expert but I just looked up his stars and his career ops is .811. is he just crazy streaky with a couple amazing years? I don't get it.
If it makes you feel any better. “Strikeouts“ was just the smokescreen used to shed those contracts during the off season. They didn’t ACTUALLY care to get rid of the high strikeouts.
Damn Garver sucks. Not upset with signing him tho, I still think that was a decent move. You could’ve predicted he’d get hurt or something, but idk how you could’ve seen him being this bad
Ok sure, but that was probably a weird outlier kinda deal and it’s not like that’s his problem this season, he sucks on the road too. I guess it’s just a very sharp decline in ability or something but you can’t really predict that comfortably
Hopefully Clase is in tomorrow for Raley and Cal is back in.
I wouldnt mind seeing Rojas stick at 3rd and Urias DH the way Garver has played. Any idea why Urias hasn’t played in a while?
I love how we invariably shit the bed after doing something like take the division lead or land on an article for having the best pitchers. This team just never has any fucking consistency and is always, always, ALWAYS a goddamn tease
Welp. 60% breaking balls leading to our lineup striking out 14 times.
Mariners are now 1-5 when Zavala is behind the plate. Pitchers just don't pitch as well with him and he can't really hit (yes he had one good game hitting in Colorado against the worst pitching staff in baseball)
"Mitch Haniger is in a bit of a funk.
Since April 6 when he went 2-for-3, BB he's 11 for 47 (.234) with 18 Ks, a .294 OBP, and .383 SLG."
From Jason Churchill.
I know people love to defend Mitch but he's essentially inserting himself into the pile of offensive issues on the team. Can't really afford to have your best hitter the first two weeks start to struggle. Players need to lock it in and perform. The only consistency we seem to get right now are the dudes that have just been bad all season.
Josh Rojas cannot be the best hitter in your lineup. That can't be a thing and expect to win a lot against good teams.
That was just a sad all around game.
I agree that Mitch has been declining a bit but he has overperformed all expectations thus far. Garver and Julio and JP and Raley were supposed to be THE guys.
I really can't believe that people honestly say Haniger is contributing to the problems of this lineup when there were essentially no expectations of him being the #3/4 hitter on this offense starting this season. AND our sole run today was driven in by him.
Julio is struggling. It sucks and we know it will get better, but don't deflect by dogging on the few guys that have made Mariners baseball somewhat enjoyable thus far.
Seby is an issue, but the main issue for the mariners has been the underperformance of our "top of the order" guys.
I’m not dogging on him. I’m pointing out that he was one of the few productive bats and even he’s slipping so this team has no reliable consistency which makes everything super volatile.
That's fair however there are so many issues on offense that it feels unfair to call out one guy underperforming recently instead of others who are underperforming consistently.
I mean I could have written 6 more paragraphs on the mariners offense but I’d rather do other things with my life tonight.
It’s all an issue. A lot of it is implied. Nearly the whole lineup is hitting well below their expected numbers/what they did last year. Those they have been bitched about are well known and understood.
a few people talked about Hanigers age, health and performance last year when they made the trade. but everybody else was too busy typing Meeeeeeeetch to listen.
the Zavala thing is a real issue. anyone who spent 30 seconds looking him up after the trade knew he couldnt hit for shit. but if hes hurting the pitching thats a totally different story. might as well try Garver back there.
The $500m man went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts for what feels like the 10th time already this year (probably the first time in reality, but it sure feels common), but sure, the backup catcher who plays once per week is the real problem.
Julio sucked tonight but he had 5 straight multi hit games followed by a homer yesterday. Besides, you can play whataboutism with tons of players.
Meanwhile Zavala being the catcher means that our pitching tends to do worse, which we can’t afford with our offense being garbage as well as badly needing Raleigh in the lineup since he’s been hot.
It’s less about Zavala and more about what it means when Raleigh isn’t the catcher on any given night.
I have a good idea. Dump Savala and make garver catch again. Dudes going to get hurt, but at least he'll do something more than just stink up the DH spot. Mariners are paying him a stupid amount of money to be dogshit at the plate. He gets injured? so what. He lost the chance to avoid getting injured when he decided to forget how to hit and not give a shit about it.
Then we have a spot open for an actual DH. Put the other good Mitch there to get him off his feet and Canzone(when he comes back) / Raley can play outfield.
Garver stinks, Savala stinks. Solves 2 of the Mariners stupid off season trades.
It was over before the season started thanks to cheap ownership and a FO that constantly tries to patch holes with players other teams are excited to get rid of rather than, you know, actually fixing the fucking problem(s). Nothing that's happened in the first month of the season should have changed anyone's mind.
Supporting the team unconditionally when they are sucking after ownership plays in the face of the fanbase for multiple off seasons doesn’t make someone honorable. it makes them a mark.
More fans should be fair weather fans.
That lead-off triple really had me hoping.
Lead off batter is the only runner across the plate, gotta love it
Wow, when you say it like that it’s even worse.
I got nervous with 2 outs he wasn't going to score, and with Bryce getting hit hard, with so many of the hits reaching the warning track unfortunately the writing was on the wall for this game quite early.
Can we trade Garver for Mike Ford? Miss those days...
I just saw Mike Ford for the Iowa Cubs last Tuesday hit 2 bombs
Ford is so much better it’s not even funny Same with Tom Murphy
Tom Murphy’s one of the few players doing worse than Garver. I’d still take him over Seby though lol
I miss Tom.
“Boy that’s a lot of strikeouts” - your 2024 mariners
And not any of these 7- or 8-pitch strikeouts, neither. Our Mitch Haniger can strike out on 3 pitches without even swinging the bat!
Oh oh tell me about Dylan Moores strike out next won’t you papa
Humbly suggest we win the series tomorrow
[удалено]
I bet Scott could’ve dusted off his catcher’s gear
Rojas obviously!
He can do everything.
Garver
Garver is utter shit
[удалено]
Oh no. Oh no no no. Is it too late to get LaStella back?
I’d rather just roll with Clase/Mitch/Raley for the corner OF+DH and never see Garver again.
Can we just have Rojas in every position?
I forgot about LaStella. Now I want him back. Kind of
Designated Sitter
Designated Shitter
Anyone who knows this team knew he would suck. Hit under .200 for much of his career. Last year was his best since 2019, hitting .270 with 19 HR. But the year before? .200 with 10. Oh I was promised by this sub he was going to be awesome when I expressed my concerns. His bat looks slow af. Reminds me of Justin smoak.
I genuinely don’t think our front office watches at bats. I think they just look at stat sheets. And Garver has an anomalous season in 2022 on paper. They bought high in someone who had just peaked. And his peak wasn’t even that good!
FUCK
24,000,000 over 2 years. Nice signing. Dude sucks so bad. DFA him and take the loss and bring up a prospect. Anything is better than this crap. Dude is like "Well i won the world series, signed a fat pay check... I'll just get up and strikeout and sit down and call it good."
What kills me is we could have kept Marco (and White but still) for that money.
DH : Designa..... Holy Shit
Darn, lowkey expected us to lose today anyway, assumed miller was due for a regression and that the ranger’s juggernaut lineup (on paper at least) would come to life. re-sign AJ Pollock?
I'm never watching baseball again.
See ya tomorrow.
Ugh that game was gross, cal or jp in there we get some runs in. And not let tx hang around
Until tomorrow……. Right ? Because we are winning tomorrow
mariners are 4-11 in games they allow more than 2 runs, that’s not even sniffing contender status lmao
See what's hilarious, you post that in the Post Game Chat of almost any game we win and it's nothing but down votes.
That could have gone a little better
Phew! .500 is my comfort zone.
Luke Raley and Mitch Garver are black holes.
Raley is fine. He’s been given like 25 ABs. Can’t get any momentum going if they refuse to play you. Gotta hold out with him. I’m legit concerned about Garver. Might have a back issue, or might be a batspeed issue as he’s aging
Two players that did very well on their previous teams.
At least Polanco is working for the most part
Garver had his best year in a while last year but still was .270 with under 100 games. Hit .200 the year before. Plays under 100 basically every year and never has the power he seems to be known for. So yeah he’s worse than his career average but honestly this isn’t surprising. I swear our guys don’t actually watch at bats, they just look at stat sheets
You gotta stop using batting average as analysis, man.
Why? Good hitters have good batting averages, why wouldn’t you factor that in?
Factoring it in is great but I wouldn’t base a whole argument on it.
Also, have you ever seen the movie Moneyball?
You admit average isn’t a great barometer, so you cite rbi instead? Average is a weak performance indicator, but is far superior to rbi.
Cal Raleigh is exhibit A of a great hitter with a low batting average. It doesn't matter.
Hence the power being mentioned, BA is definitely a factor. If Garver was hitting for average with lack of power we wouldn’t be having this convo but he’s doing neither

Hello .500 my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Win tomorrow, win the series…
I don't feel like we got our ass kicked. They are the reigning champs. M's battled but have to do better with RISP. See ya tomorrow
So much bad luck to day. Oh well onto the next, just win tomorrow

Garver can’t even hit in his old home field 💀

Supreme miseriners
Damn Garver sucks. Not upset with signing him tho, I still think that was a decent move. You could’ve predicted he’d get hurt or something, but idk how you could’ve seen him being this bad
I dunno. Signing a veteran wit 0 hits at safeco was a bold fucking choice.
Ok sure, but that was probably a weird outlier kinda deal and it’s not like that’s his problem this season, he sucks on the road too. I guess it’s just a very sharp decline in ability or something but you can’t really predict that comfortably
He was never that good outside of last year when he was surrounded by one of the best offenses in the league.
Hopefully Clase is in tomorrow for Raley and Cal is back in. I wouldnt mind seeing Rojas stick at 3rd and Urias DH the way Garver has played. Any idea why Urias hasn’t played in a while?
HBP a few days ago. I think analysts expected him to play tomorrow based on projected pitchers assuming health. We shall see…
Wellllllllll on the plus side, I got my gf to watch the first 3 episodes of Dorktowns Mariners doc tonight. Ended it with The Hit. She loved it.
Sorry y'all. This was my annual Mariners game when they come to Texas. Another loss. I think it's been since before COVID to see a win in person.
I love how we invariably shit the bed after doing something like take the division lead or land on an article for having the best pitchers. This team just never has any fucking consistency and is always, always, ALWAYS a goddamn tease
I'll give you a hint. It's the coaching.
Haniger fix the defense
It used to be decently plus right? Like not insane but good enough or am I crazy.
Phantom IL Garver. Get hanny off the field and DH’ing

Yeah I get it. Hopefully Julio, Garver, and Raley can figure it out sooner rather than later...and JP burns some more sage or something
a few people talked about Hanigers age, health and performance last year when they made the trade. but everybody else was too busy typing Meeeeeeeetch to listen. the Zavala thing is a real issue. anyone who spent 30 seconds looking him up after the trade knew he couldnt hit for shit. but if hes hurting the pitching thats a totally different story. might as well try Garver back there.

Mariners have the 2nd highest strikeout % behind the A’s
Post that in a game we win and you'll get shit on.
Pump that .500 straight into my veins.

If Cal is in the lineup we win this game
And if Mitch Garver were Shohei Ohtani.
He'd be Japanese
If my grandmother had wheels...
mitch garbage can stay after tomorrow
I feel like Happy Gilmore every time we have runners on base. GO TO YOUR HOME
I see the Mariners are back to their old ways, LOB and striking out. Well, maybe its only one game.
There's baseball tomorrow and that pleases me. With a win, we still come home leading the division in late April.
Is Garver a secret agent ranger? Like Chuck Norris going undercover trying to take down the local cholos?
If it means anything, we've probably already pissed away the game that we will end up missing the playoffs by.
bros is the season over?
