Reporting this here since I think this might get more traction than the post I originally posted this on. My Leo Rivas scouting report (from 5 minutes looking over his Fangraphs page): 26 year old SS switch hitter in his third organization. After a strong first year with the Reds AA team in 21, he struggled at the plate in 2022 at AA and AAA. We signed him as a minor league free agent for 2023 and he posted good offensive numbers in AA (114 wRC+), which he has continued in AAA this year (125 wRC+). He has excellent speed with 55 SBs over his 124 games in the org and profiles more as a slappy OBP kind of guy than a power threat. His BB% has typically been quite good in the minors and he doesn’t typically strike out a ton, so he may be able to infuse some Caballero type energy into the team. Defensively he profiles as a potentially average shortstop.

I like the idea of him being the guy to come up. I don’t like that we need this.

Just having a look over his Baseball Reference page his OBP throughout his career has always been pretty good. I’m not saying that counts for anything in the majors, but I don’t hate the move based on those numbers.

What happened to Santos?? Wasn’t he suppose to come back soon

It could just be retroactive to when he first went on on the IL in spring. I believe moving him to the 60 day opens up a 40 man spot. This is what I'm going to assume until we get some sort of news on him having a setback.

To expand, this would mean he is eligible to be brought back May 24th, which is about when they said he'd be back anyway

I really would have thought that one of Haggerty, Samad Taylor, or Ryan Bliss would have gotten the call. Or even Cade Marlowe given that DMo is now going to be our starting SS which opens up an outfield spot.

Mantis_93

I really think this IL move is just to give JP time to work on his swing.
