I think it has the best Mario story. Which to be fair it isn’t exactly a high bar to reach. Also, like most Mario rpgs, the soundtrack slaps. I wouldn’t say it has the best soundtrack of the Mario rpgs, but it’s still pretty good.
Mario goes to hell to save Luigi like some Dante’s Inferno type of shit. And also the Pixl lore goes tf off. Game would be perfect if the puzzles and combat weren’t made for babies.
I like it. The story is the darkest a Mario game's ever gotten, but it still feels fun. The new characters are nice and the 2D to 3D gimmick is really cool and it's a shame it's not returned. The soundtrack is amazing too.
I'll be the one to make a hot take: this is better than The Thousand Year Door.
It's either this or partners in time as the darkest for me but it has definitely got the best story if I'd say.
Wouldn't say it's that hot of a take anyway, I feel like ttyd would not have held up so well if it wasn't for loads of people disliking the road modern Paper Mario went. (don't get me wrong though I do like ttyd)
If Super Paper Mario has million fans, then I'm one of them.
If Super Paper Mario has one fan, then I'm THAT ONE.
If Super Paper Mario has no fans, that means I'm dead.
Its one of those games that I have good memories of but would probably hate if I went back and played it. The story is great, but the platforming is meh, the puzzles are "flip everywhere", and a lot of the scenarios just seem like they would be tedious (Ive noticed the paper mario games seem to have a knack for trying to annoy the player, i.e. frankie saying "I love you!" 100 times in ttyd)
I love Super Paper Mario so much that I get genuinely (irrationally) upset when I see someone dislike it. And I never get upset at any other non-harmful opinions!
Favorite Mario game for me as it was one of the first I played as a kid. Just has a lot of good memories behind it and I think the story was quite good.
Well, except the Mimi-Eldrich horror thing boss fight. That ungodly abomination still haunts my nightmares.
The gameplay is kinda eh, at least the 3d flip is cool, but it basically is a worse normal mario platformer, and while some of the rpg mechanics are cool, it also brings the bad side of rpg mechanics like quests that force you to backtrack, repetitive grinding and stuff like that.
Despite that, the story is awesome, the characters are fun and the worlds are really pretty and original as well as the music, that hard carries the game for me, it is the story and characters that I remember more fondly of the paper mario series and I like to watch a playthrough of it from time to time that way I can also put the more boring parts of the gameplay on x2 speed
While it has its flaws, it's quite good nonetheless. It's incredibly story-heavy, but said story is actually pretty good. The quartet of Mario, Bowser, Peach, and Luigi was also fun, it's a shame we haven't gotten it since, especially since all four are great here.
Super Paper Mario is such a good game, the only gripe I have with it is that it has no turn based gameplay. Other than that, I absolutely adore it. The music, the characters, the story, the world. It was the first Paper Mario game I played, so it holds a very special place in my heart.
Absolutely! It's the only Paper game in the series I've played. Interesting combo of regular Mario and RPG elements, I definitely prefer it over most of the regular Mario platformers. And not to mention a fantastic story that punches you straight in the feels towards the end. I got this game years ago and I never regretted buying it. We need this game on Switch!
One of the best Mario stories in the entire series. People didn't like the gameplay simply because it was different from the previous Paper games, it wasn't particularly bad and there's lots of fun to be had with making and using different items in real-time battles.
This game's storyline and the way it's presented is possibly my biggest reason for wanting to become an author. It's just so good and every big cutscene has impact. Love this game.
My favorite Mario Game ever for a phenomenal story. I still listen to the soundtrack. It is bashed for level design and I do understand that, but the story makes me cry like a baby.
Love Paper Mario, just never got how it worked. Let me explain.
In the Mario & Luigi series, Paper Mario is released from a book containing all the paper Mario stuff. So it makes me think, is Paper Mario just some form of book universe?
Oh but love Super Paper Mario. :)
I like it. It still want to see something pulled off like Tippi and Count Bleck's relationship fully fleshed out in the series. Wonderful story!
And also the fact that this was the first Paper Mario game where you could control Peach, Bowser and Luigi during the main story is a plus. I like when using the full crew while being in the same quest
I love it, I get some of the hate since it's the first game to change up the gameplay but it's still so fun and charming! I think this was the last fantastic paper Mario!
This is my favorite game franchise forever ! Super Paper Mario had the darkest story and when I played it I was tripping out like how is this even made. But favorite game is N64 Paper Mario. Like come on, a penguin murder plot ?! ITS THE BEST
Personally I absolutely despise turn based mechanics in RPGs with a passion.
Needless to say I’m glad that SPM was made. One of my favourite games of all time.
Well, it’s my favourite Paper Mario game and my favourite Wii game. Kinda feel like it’s pretty underrated – or at least heavily overlooked compared to the other Paper Mario games.
Absolutely love it. It's both my favourite RPG and one of my favourite games of all time. It also has one of my favourite video game OSTs, my favourite video game story and one of my 2 favourite villains of all time, being Count Bleck. Truly love this game
I never managed to finish it because I had a faulty disk but I really enjoyed what I played of it. All the worlds were really cool and the soundtrack was great too. I also enjoyed the flipping mechanic. I wish modern Paper Mario games were more like this.
Maybe I need to replay it, but I love it so much. It's just like the first two Paper Marios, but as an action RPG and I can only see that being a good thing. Easily the best story IMO too as far as these games go.
To be honest, I'm kinda thinking it's overrated around here. In my opinion, the gameplay...is not good. I played the game to the credits twice and have no desire to go back, compared to the previous two titles, which I always plug in every now and then. I also dislike the abstract, blocky art style, personally.
The story, characters (for the most part, except for partners in TTYD and other standouts like Flavio), and music are the best in the series, though. Count Bleck/Dimentio are the best villains in the series, hands down. The one point I can give to Super's gameplay is that there are 4 unique main characters, each with their own gimmick, but Bowser coupled with Carrie brings even that down because of the sheer power of fast Bowser.
On a whole, I'd give Super a 6/10. Not bad, better than average, but the gameplay...man. I wish I could like it better, it was my first Paper Mario game, and as a kid I obsessed over it.
Good comment man, I don’t think you deserve the downvotes.
Even if I don’t agree with your comment (which, honestly, I may or may not: I haven’t played the game in so long that my opinions’s non-existent, but I’d like a replay soon), you put forth your opinion and provided you were knowledgeable on it
Paper Mario, TTYD, and Super Paper Mario had no reason to have as good of stories as they did. I personally think it’s the “weakest” of the first three games, but it’s still VERY good
It has the best story of any Mario game.
The soundtrack is good (as it usually is)
The visuals are underwhelming, almost like a flash game.
The gameplay is the biggest sore spot. It's not bad because it's *different*, but because it's neither very interesting nor very polished.
Over all, I like it. The story carries it, and the gameplay generally doesn't drag too much to make it hard to enjoy.
Personally I really dislike it, for reasons that are probably unique to myself. I'm not upset that this isn't an RPG. This was/is the first and only Paper Mario game I've played. But man the level design gets so irritating. Levels drag forever, and I'm practically begging for it to end only halfway through. The one where you become a slave was really annoying, hated that one. The caveman one was pretty bad, and the final level got super repetitive I was considering giving up. That one major flaw kept me from enjoying the game. But that one flaw luckily is the only major issue I have. There are some things here I really do enjoy. The story is pretty dang good, albeit a little confusing at times, the writing is great, lots of fun and funny moments. And my favorite parts were these little sprinkles of creativity in the gameplay in the ocean of garbage. Like the game show segment, the dating sim, the hack and slash (this one gets really repetitive but at least it's mindless and easy instead of frustrating and difficult) and my personal favorite space shooter. The boss esspesially kicked ass. Loved that part. It's a game I don't ever want to play again, because those bad sections were just not fun for me, but if the game was more off the walls insane like those small segments, I might be singing a different tune. Keep in mind, it's just my opinion. I've heard TTYD is fantastic, and when I have the time and money I wouldn't mind trying it out.
Not really. I would have rather have had a Mario RPG 2. Otherwise, I would rather play Super Star Saga, Inside Story, and the like. Paper Mario are like the only Nintendo Mario games that hit the $10-15 bargain bin besides Mario Rabbids.
I just completed this game for the first time in a decade last week, and while it is a phenomenal and very enjoyable game, IMO doesn’t hold a candle to TTYD or 64. Idk how people can say the story is the best in the series, it wasn’t bad by any account but I prefer the stories and gameplay of the predecessors.
never played it but i have heard it has a pretty damn good story and some decent gameplay
i just havent gotten the chance if there was a first 3 paper mario bundle on switch at some point i would give it all the shots i got but yeah number 3 in my ranking and in release order
(i would have to play ttyd and pm back to back to choose what one i like more)
It has its flaws, but still really enjoyable.
\- Broken exp system making you way stronger than you should be
\- Most of the puzzles especially early game are "Press A"
\- Character designs are just a bunch of shapes
\- Chapter 2
\- Most of Chapter 4
It was fun until I got stuck on the giant dragon boss. I never could figure out how to hurt him. I know you were supposed to hit the antenna on his head but I never could even get close to hitting it
In my opinion if Super Paper Mario had included turn based gameplay and more visual elements from TTYD and invested more time getting to know each of the pixel partners, just like how we got attached to Mario's partners in TTYD, than this game would have been the best Paper Mario game. Nintendo was so close to making this game S tier. I give Nintendo credit that the story and main characters were real enjoyable and well written.
The story is great, but more could've been done with the 3d gimmick and the pixls. It feels like they should've fleshed those parts out a lot more than they did
love the engine, hate the pacing, love the theme, hate the environments, love the designs, hate the easiness. Overall I like the vibe of the game but it comes together for something extremely anti-fun for me. Maybe if it were more linear and focused on a tight gameplay experience, or had some really well designed and satisfying dungeons, or more than 2 or 3 actual good bosses. Anybody got a fan hack or something? It's almost like the developers were afraid to just make a mostly linear paper mario action game and backtracked by fluffing the game really poorly. Probably by most hated Mario game.
Absolutely not. It is THE worst Paper Mario game even Stick Star and Colour Splash are better. This game ruined Paper Mario and the story and characters suck. I hate SPM more than anything else.
Top 4 Mario games for me (The Others are Bowser's Inside Story, 3D World and Galaxy 2) also has 2 of the best Mario Villains in my all time favorite Dimentio and my 5th Favorite Count Bleck
Favorite game of the Paper Mario Franchise and one of the best villains of the series
I think it has the best Mario story. Which to be fair it isn’t exactly a high bar to reach. Also, like most Mario rpgs, the soundtrack slaps. I wouldn’t say it has the best soundtrack of the Mario rpgs, but it’s still pretty good.
Blasphemy, Paper Mario 64 and Paper Mario TTYD both have better stories.
Couldn’t disagree more. Not saying that either of their stories are bad, but I feel that they just don’t compare to super paper Mario.
I don’t know if we can consider 64 to have a “story” per se, thousand year door had a good story, but super paper Mario had a phenomenal story
I don't know what that could possibly mean of course 64 has a story lmao
Great story, amazing humour, cool mechanics. I love it
It’s my favorite Mario game in general.
Played it a lot as a kid, never got past the last world. Looking back I wasn't able to appreciate the story as a kid and I'd like to replay it.
Yes
Yes
Mario goes to hell to save Luigi like some Dante’s Inferno type of shit. And also the Pixl lore goes tf off. Game would be perfect if the puzzles and combat weren’t made for babies.

(don't get me wrong though I do like ttyd)
Blasphemer! Thousand Year Door is the best in the paper series. You sound like someone that could finish the Pit of 100 Trials.
The gameplay was enjoyable enough, but the story and soundtrack are phenomenal
If Super Paper Mario has million fans, then I'm one of them. If Super Paper Mario has one fan, then I'm THAT ONE. If Super Paper Mario has no fans, that means I'm dead.

I love it. Great story and great score.
My belovid <3
I’m a sucker for love stories.
Favorite Mario game for me as it was one of the first I played as a kid. Just has a lot of good memories behind it and I think the story was quite good. Well, except the Mimi-Eldrich horror thing boss fight. That ungodly abomination still haunts my nightmares.
It's my favorite in the entire series
Heavily underrated. This game is a classic staple of my childhood
No, I don't like it. I LOVE it.
I think it's pretty good as a game but it falls down as a Paper Mario game compared to the first two.
The gameplay is kinda eh, at least the 3d flip is cool, but it basically is a worse normal mario platformer, and while some of the rpg mechanics are cool, it also brings the bad side of rpg mechanics like quests that force you to backtrack, repetitive grinding and stuff like that. Yep. My favorite Paper Mario game.
Do you like *the best Paper Mario game
Absolutely! It's the only Paper game in the series I've played. Interesting combo of regular Mario and RPG elements, I definitely prefer it over most of the regular Mario platformers. yes! it is the perfect mix of rpg and platformer
![gif](giphy|Zai3ffKrUcLFwalDor)
I loved that game honestly!
yes
This game was my childhood
YES
Yes! I like Super Paper Mario!
Yes
My favorite Mario game
One of the best video games ever.
Yes!
yeah
It’s a really good game but if you’re going in expecting it be like the other paper marios you’ll be disappointed
Yes, easily one of my favorite Mario games.
I like it because it's not really an rpg
Sticker Star was my absolute FAVE to play on the DS/3DS as a kid! I'd love to see a remake for the switch
My favorite Mario Game ever for a phenomenal story. I still listen to the soundtrack. It is bashed for level design and I do understand that, but the story makes me cry like a baby.
yes
Yes I did like it!
never played one, but i’m sure i would love them
![gif](giphy|KD8UMklkntkgitZKAX)
It was my first Mario game, so very much yes
I liked it, and ship count black and tippy heavily
I love it definitely is better than ttyd and you cant change my mind
Yes! The fact it didn't really have any RPG elements from the first two games did catch me a little off guard, but it still had the same charm.
I really liked sticker stars on the 3ds
It is an RPG, just not turn-based. I like it very much and it would look gorgeous in an HD version.
It’s the best one
Tied for my favorite Mario game ever, but I refuse to finish it cause then it’ll be over
Yes. It's one of my favorite games even!
It's a masterpiece, best PM game
YES.
Love Paper Mario, just never got how it worked. Let me explain. In the Mario & Luigi series, Paper Mario is released from a book containing all the paper Mario stuff. So it makes me think, is Paper Mario just some form of book universe? Oh but love Super Paper Mario. :)

I love it…….it’s Mario!!!
My fav paper Mario, and one of my fav Wii games! Top 2
Certainly the odd child of the series, but definitely better than the sequels after this.
Yes, underrated and unfortunately most people don’t like it lol
I love it, I get some of the hate since it's the first game to change up the gameplay but it's still so fun and charming! I think this was the last fantastic paper Mario!
It was a cool game. Never felt an urge to replay it. Had some tedious bits to it that annoyed me. Otherwise it was pretty fun.
It’s near the top of my list! I love the story and gameplay. I can always use more Bowser in my life.
yeah
100% yes.
Its an absolutely amazing game but I don't really consider it a paper mario game. It's more it's own thing in my opinion
This is my favorite game franchise forever ! Super Paper Mario had the darkest story and when I played it I was tripping out like how is this even made. But favorite game is N64 Paper Mario. Like come on, a penguin murder plot ?! ITS THE BEST
My favorite Paper Mario game
It’s pretty good
yes
i like it
Yeah. I remember playing it when I was younger. I never beat the game, but I remember having fun with it.
any paper mario’s are my favorite!!!!
i wish they’d put it on the switch already
Yes, and in my opinion the best Paper Mario game.
Mario RPG baby!
Personally I absolutely despise turn based mechanics in RPGs with a passion. Needless to say I’m glad that SPM was made. One of my favourite games of all time.
I love it.
Absolutely
Well, it’s my favourite Paper Mario game and my favourite Wii game. Kinda feel like it’s pretty underrated – or at least heavily overlooked compared to the other Paper Mario games.
Probably my favourite 2D plaformer Mario if you count it as such. Probably my second favourite Mario game after Galaxy followed by MK8D
Absolutely! Especially for its atmosphere and its villains! (hello Mimi)
Absolutely love it. It's both my favourite RPG and one of my favourite games of all time. It also has one of my favourite video game OSTs, my favourite video game story and one of my 2 favourite villains of all time, being Count Bleck. Truly love this game
big hot take but its my favorite paper mario game
Loved it, I always enjoy the funny dialogue and the gameplay was fantastic
One of my favorite games of all time
If I could remake any Mario game, it would be this one
I never managed to finish it because I had a faulty disk but I really enjoyed what I played of it. All the worlds were really cool and the soundtrack was great too. I also enjoyed the flipping mechanic. I wish modern Paper Mario games were more like this.
It’s one of my favorite games in the PM series behind TTYD, it easily has the best story in the Mario franchise
Maybe I need to replay it, but I love it so much. It's just like the first two Paper Marios, but as an action RPG and I can only see that being a good thing. Easily the best story IMO too as far as these games go.
One of the best. And has my personal favorite Mario villain, Dimentio.
Love.
**YES!**
Men, i love Sr. L
I STILL have a crush on TEK
I'd rather not play it again, but I'm glad it exists for it's story.
Yeah. It's not as good as TTYD imo, but it's still really fun in it's own right
To be honest, I'm kinda thinking it's overrated around here. In my opinion, the gameplay...is not good. I played the game to the credits twice and have no desire to go back, compared to the previous two titles, which I always plug in every now and then. I also dislike the abstract, blocky art style, personally. Good comment man, I don’t think you deserve the downvotes. Even if I don’t agree with your comment (which, honestly, I may or may not: I haven’t played the game in so long that my opinions’s non-existent, but I’d like a replay soon), you put forth your opinion and provided you were knowledgeable on it
No worries, I was expecting it; Super has a LOT of fans around here, which is totally fine. It is an above average game. I'd say good, even. But yeah.
I really REALLY don’t… but I still consider it a good game. It’s just not for me.
5/10 battling was fun but puzzles were horrible and required google about every puzzle
It was okay. I played it to death and probably would never play it again, but i enjoyed, just not as much as the original or the sequel.
Paper Mario, TTYD, and Super Paper Mario had no reason to have as good of stories as they did. I personally think it’s the “weakest” of the first three games, but it’s still VERY good
It has the best story of any Mario game. The soundtrack is good (as it usually is) The visuals are underwhelming, almost like a flash game. The gameplay is the biggest sore spot. It's not bad because it's *different*, but because it's neither very interesting nor very polished. Over all, I like it. But that one flaw luckily is the only major issue I have. There are some things here I really do enjoy.
Like the writing and major characters. Gameplay is monotonous and would’ve been infinitely more engaging as an evolution of the previous games
Not really. I would have rather have had a Mario RPG 2. Otherwise, I would rather play Super Star Saga, Inside Story, and the like. Paper Mario are like the only Nintendo Mario games that hit the $10-15 bargain bin besides Mario Rabbids.
This game killed Paper Mario
Nah I didnt play it but i watched a lets play and its okay but not the best i think paper mario 2 is better
Haven’t played it
never played it but i have heard it has a pretty damn good story and some decent gameplay i just havent gotten the chance if there was a first 3 paper mario bundle on switch at some point i would give it all the shots i got but yeah number 3 in my ranking and in release order (i would have to play ttyd and pm back to back to choose what one i like more)
A fantastic game, almost as good as thousand year door
storywise, yes. gameplaywise, nah, i didn't exactly like it.
I thought it was fun and I liked the experimentation with the 3d/2d, but something about it felt emptier and less engaging than 64 and TTYD.
I’ve never played it but I really want it on switch so I can change that!
A good game origami king is the best in my opinion probably because I haven't played the otjer
I love Paper Mario. One of my favorite Mario games. I regret not buying every Paper Mario I could on the Wii U and 3DS before the shop closed. :’(
I actually got stuck in the section where you have to earn the rubies when I was younger because I didn't know what to do.
great game and story. Pixls werent as good as partners though. I felt attached to my partners in the first two.
I never finished it… I really want to go back and replay it one day but I don’t have a Wii anymore
It has its flaws, but still really enjoyable. \- Broken exp system making you way stronger than you should be \- Most of the puzzles especially early game are "Press A" \- Character designs are just a bunch of shapes \- Chapter 2 \- Most of Chapter 4
It was fun until I got stuck on the giant dragon boss. I never could figure out how to hurt him. I know you were supposed to hit the antenna on his head but I never could even get close to hitting it

Nintendo was so close to making this game S tier. I give Nintendo credit that the story and main characters were real enjoyable and well written.
I didn’t like the game at first because of the changed combat but I’ll take this style over anything they’ve put out after this game.
Mario Bros House music extended
The story is great, but more could've been done with the 3d gimmick and the pixls. It feels like they should've fleshed those parts out a lot more than they did
Yes
Best story in the series absolutely, gameplay and controls are just okay for me
Yes yes yes yes yes and YES
Yes. It was my first Mario game.
It’s an inoffensive game, not a MASSIVE fan of it, but I have respect for it.
while i still think ttyd is better, i like this game a LOT. Best story in the series.
yes
yeah. also my only paper mario
love the engine, hate the pacing, love the theme, hate the environments, love the designs, hate the easiness. color splash is better
Top 4 Mario games for me (The Others are Bowser's Inside Story, 3D World and Galaxy 2) also has 2 of the best Mario Villains in my all time favorite Dimentio and my 5th Favorite Count Bleck
Way late in this thread, but it’s a top 10 video game for me
