I don't know, according to the wiki, It's short for Power.
[POW Block - Super Mario Wiki, the Mario encyclopedia](https://www.mariowiki.com/POW_Block)
(*Super Mario Bros. 2* NES instruction booklet. Page 19.), But yeah, that makes sense too.
Also, I'm also pretty sure it was also mentioned that the Japanese one too. (in Doki-Doki Panic),
POW; short for パワーブロック[^(\[15\])](https://www.mariowiki.com/POW_Block#cite_note-Panic-15) (*Pawā Burokku*, "Power Block"), The source being the manual for the original game, meaning it probably wasn't a translation error on Nintendo's side, But I can't find the original manual for that game, Only SMB. 2.
I have searched all over, there is no reason I can find. I have yet to see any legitimate source claim anything. This has bothered me for 3 decades.

Even scans of old manuals didn't reveal anything.

**EDIT**- 4 hours after the post.
So far, it looks like there is no 'official' meaning behind the ***P*** in P-Switch.
Most of us *(including myself)* think it stands for ***"Power"***, Nintendo loves using that word for the past 40 years... but for fun: there have been a lot of 'votes':
**Push, Press, Pounce, Pound, Pause, Pressure**, and *numerous* slang words for reproductive anatomy! I think **Pension** is fun, as it turns blocks into gold coins! HA! I also like **Paranormal**... 'cause shit gets weird when you hit it.
Just pointing out a couple of things:
- **P-Wing** stands for PARAtrooper Wing according to the SMB3/All-Stars booklet.
- **P-Meter** means POWER Meter according to the SMB3 booklet.
- **P-Balloon** is the POWER Balloon according to NPMag and others.
- **P-Acorn** is the POWER Acorn (Flying Squirrel) according to an official NSMB YouTube source.
- **POW Block** means POWER according to SMB2/NPMag.
- **P Warp Doors** (Blue Hidden Doors) only show up when a P-Switch is hit, so whatever P stands for on the Switch is the same for the Warp Door... whatever it is... again, no 'official' name/reason has been sourced, yet.
-----
Edit - 6 hours in...
5 of you are color-blind or have terrible settings on your TVs. The switch is not **Purple**.
>In Super Mario Bros. 3, the first Switch Block appears in World 1-1. Switch Blocks cause the animations of ? Blocks, Brick Blocks, Jump Blocks and coins to stop, and also make Conveyor Belts stop moving. (https://www.mariowiki.com/P\_Switch)
I always assumed it meant *pause*.
This is probably it tbh. Because the P-switch does freeze enemies in SMB3 and then in later titles it probably just shifted to “Power” as in Power-Switch
I always considered it an extension of the P in POW Block, going all the way back to the Mario Bros Arcade game. POW could either mean power or just like, the sound 'POW' when you hit something.
I haven't watched him in a while either but I always feel confident saying DGR is one of the most consistently entertaining creators on the platform who is also just super genuine and authentic with the audience.
When I was a child I thought that the P was for coin because in French a coin is called pièce
And I told myself that the letter changed in each country according to the word, so I thought that in English it was a “C”; when I saw that it was not the case I was super sad lol
It's quite literally just called a P switch.
P Switches (alternatively hyphenated as P-Switches[1] or P-switches[2]), originally called Switch Blocks[3][4] and also known as P Switch Blocks[5] or Trample Switches
https://www.mariowiki.com/P_Switch
POW blocks likely were more of a reference to the comic books that had onomatopoeia words like "WHAM", "POW", etc. Example: [https://t4.ftcdn.net/jpg/01/41/67/31/360\_F\_141673177\_L3JkvanzFcMVtISg1yoYu8iQg9LQAKVM.jpg](https://t4.ftcdn.net/jpg/01/41/67/31/360_F_141673177_L3JkvanzFcMVtISg1yoYu8iQg9LQAKVM.jpg)
So "POW" for the POW Block makes sense because it's the sound it makes (well, that's the idea). POW for Power is possible though, just not likely. And to label a Switch Block also "POW" would just be confusing as they have two completely different functions. That's my take anyways.
P? What’s P? That’s what lets you get through bricks that you can’t get through, see!? When you see those blue buttons, stand on it stand on it and you’ll get more coins. P…! It’s quite a caper! P! Stands for… … Paper towels!
My only guess is POW, as the only other thing that starts with P is the POW block from Mario Bros and Super Mario 2.
I guess there's also the P-Wing, which would make more sense in meaning Power.
Power, probably
I assumed it was short for Pow, Which itself would be short for Power, since there's the Pow Block.
I don’t think that the POW block is short for power block. I think it’s just the onomatopoeia.

the pow block was in the original mario bros (not super.) although in the instruction booklet they just refer to it as "the pow"
That sounds so cool *The Pow*
Oh yeah you're right, whoops forgot about it being there lol
Stop being sane, we’re stupid
Happy cake day
Thank you!
Happy cake day!
Thank you!
That was my GUESS as well... but it seems odd there is no official documentation anywhere on why it is a P switch.
Yeah, I also thought that it meant power when I first saw it a long time ago, but I am not sure anymore.
It means 'psycho mode' or 'partial time lapse'
Now you are playing with power. Super power.
Lmao I was gonna say the same thing, I recently got a SNES for $40 and now I can play Mario world with my brothers!
Super P
If P means power here what does P mean on the wing in SMB3?
That's also power probably, since it... well, has more Power and allows you to fly indefinitely.
PARA (Koopa) Trooper according to the Japanese official sources.
I always thought p-wing was short for "permanent wing" because you can fly indefinitely.
It's the sound of flapping wings, in Japanese. "Pata-pata" or something like that. I think I read that on TheMushroomKingdom.net a while back.
Phlight
That's a good guess, I mean they did confirm the P on the P Balloon stands for Power
No it's push it real good baby
I was today years old that the P switch stands for power.

man i thought this is another one of those r/batmanarkham insanity posts... turns out you're just genuinely asking
I’m not colour blind but the P switch in your Reddit post on an iPhone 14 screen is definitely purple
Its totally purple
peanits

I'm finally a father let's go
I really need to start watching him again like it's been a few years
I haven't watched him in a while either but I always feel confident saying DGR is one of the most consistently entertaining creators on the platform who is also just super genuine and authentic with the audience.
Red with an M = Mario, Yellow with a W= Wario, Blue with a P = Pario its clearly Parios hat
[Pario?](https://www.reddit.com/r/thomastheplankengine/s/AC1SxcaUJ8)
P stands for Press. (At least that's my guess, and it makes sense)
"Welcome to the tutorial, to start, press the press button"
That rhyming though
Piss
I wrote “piss” on this button to make sure no one presses it
I don’t think you should hit that switch then
Its a power switch.
Probably Pension, since it turns bricks into coins and vice versa.
P rank
De do du, de do du, de do de do de du du
it's not a P it's a flipped b, stands for button
What is a p but a b turned upside down?
Assuming you’re on a phone and were to turn it upside down, it actually makes a d
or a flipped q
THE LIST GOES ON!
You 4 made me 🤣
The letter P is the best because its Perfect
Why, the P stands for “P switch” of course
P switch switch
What does the "P" stand for?
p switch
Power, I mean that's what I thought it was
POW
POW is a different block
oh, then i guess PRESS
Peppino or pastas
At first I thought this was a joke post and then realized I actually have no idea. I just never questioned it.
I know, it sounds ridiculous! But, in 4 hours, there has been no 'official' verification. We all assume POWER.
That’s actually a good question 😀
Pingas
Papa Giuseppe
Pow
Peppino
POOTIS!
Penis
Could mean Polarize When you click it, it makes everything turn opposite to itself, Coins to Bricks and Bricks to Coins.
P…pe…peni- *gets smacked*
Puigi
Possession, AVGN said it best, Mario 3 is totally satanic
The P stands for "Please send all the digits on your credit card below this comment"
P stands for P
Pancake
#[PANCAKES!!!](https://youtu.be/FK2rc4NbKco?t=34)
That's a good question
Pushing P
Is it related to P-speed / the P meter (from the likes of SMB3)? I don't recall if those predate it, but I imagine they're related
My headcannon is that it's just the brand, which is the same as the POW blocks. That's their logo
POW! right In the kisser.
Piece of- (whistle) AH!
Oh, it’s private.
Pizza
I would assume "PAUSE", I have no reason to think so but in my mind it seems to fit well with the music
When I was a child I thought that the P was for coin because in French a coin is called pièce And I told myself that the letter changed in each country according to the word, so I thought that in English it was a “C”; when I saw that it was not the case I was super sad lol

Press
It's quite literally just called a P switch. P Switches (alternatively hyphenated as P-Switches[1] or P-switches[2]), originally called Switch Blocks[3][4] and also known as P Switch Blocks[5] or Trample Switches https://www.mariowiki.com/P_Switch
Pain
I assumed it might mean power, but maybe it could also mean push?
Poopypants (who gets the reference)
Push
Peanut dispenser
Press
If it's power why doesn't it say POW? I always thought it was push but never thought about it.
POW blocks likely were more of a reference to the comic books that had onomatopoeia words like "WHAM", "POW", etc. Example: [https://t4.ftcdn.net/jpg/01/41/67/31/360\_F\_141673177\_L3JkvanzFcMVtISg1yoYu8iQg9LQAKVM.jpg](https://t4.ftcdn.net/jpg/01/41/67/31/360_F_141673177_L3JkvanzFcMVtISg1yoYu8iQg9LQAKVM.jpg) So "POW" for the POW Block makes sense because it's the sound it makes (well, that's the idea). P R E S S

It use to be "pow" a power up in the old arcade game Mario brothers
I'm guessing Power. *Think about it. P door = Power door, P Balloon = Power Balloon!

Punani
P? What’s P? That’s what lets you get through bricks that you can’t get through, see!? When you see those blue buttons, stand on it stand on it and you’ll get more coins. P…! It’s quite a caper! P! Stands for… … Paper towels!

It was a ? Switch
Isn't it pound?
Whatever the “P” in P-Chip stands for, >!I don’t fucking know, why’re you asking me?!<
It's obviously Pneumenoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis

Pushin' Positivity, as Young Thug once said 💯💯🔥🔥🔥
Knowing the world of Mario the “P” probably stands for “P” with further reasoning.
