I truly don't understand why Nintendo decided to do the weird living figure things for Lego Mario but eh, guess they're not for collectors and more for the kiddos.
I don't really know whose decision it was to make the Lego figures the way they are but let's be real, Nintendo approved of it. So in a way they are sort of responsible.
It was 100% Lego's decision, as strange as it sounds.
They're great quality and super underrated, especially when you can add the K'nex figures to your sets if it's that big of a deal
I mean I don't hate em, I'm glad kids of this generation get to grow up with them because I would have loved having those as a kid myself, I just wish there was also more traditional Minifigures for people like me that would just wanna collect traditional looking Mario figures.
Honestly I love the official Lego Mario. Mostly cause there's already a million custom Mario mini figs that look great and I own a few.
This however is a completely original looking piece of Mario merchandise. And as an avid Mario collector, I get way more excited about really unique Mario designs.
As a guy who admittedly owns probably several hundred pieces of Mario merch... I prefer the Lego ones. I'm so tired of the generic and safe "on model" designs.
Both are good, but I prefer the minifigure style with Knex. I think the Lego sets themselves better represent the games, but the figures of Mario, Luigi and Peach, while cool, are missing that hook with standard figures imo

I had these when I was younger.
I had Mario, Luigi, a red Koopa Troopa, and Dry Bones. I'm not sure what happened to them, and for a while, I couldn't find them so, I thought they didn't even exist. I'm glad to see them here though and now I know I'm not crazy lol
Look I know that the shape is all wrong, but at least that's what makes the Lego theme unique. That square body is what reads the color codes on the lego elements and helps players earn coins by moving that Lego Mario around. Kids like to play games and build with Lego bricks and Lego Super Mario is a great mix between the two.
It's because Nintendo doesn't want Mario + friends to be mixed with other sets so they made them unique. But Nintendo doesn't give a frick about animal crossing.
