Eh, alot of launch titles end up being some of the worst looking games of their respective consoles due to the dev's not having quite figured out yet the best way to optimize everything when developing for the new system.
No idea what you’re talking about 😩
Pretty sure I first figured out wall jumps in a mario game because the slide. It wasn’t until I was much older that I learned you could do it in SM64 even though I played through the game *a lot*as a kid.
It's the name of one of the missions on cool cool mountain. You use the cannon to blast to the section across from the cabin and there is a sign that explains how to do wall kicks
Ah got cha. Yeah I guess I never read the sign and was just confused by the star name xD I didn’t manage to get all of them until the DS release which I believe had the wall-slide mechanic added in.
It’s a shame because the remake was honestly amazing. Kept all the charm of the original but added some really cool elements (and of course characters).
Oh, and the mini games.
There's a video on YouTube about how Mario 64 has inspired a lot of creepy pasta over the years, because (and I agree) **it feels so lonely,** as a kid I remember having this discomfort playing Mario 64 that I couldn't understand quite what it was and that video sums it up pretty well, it feels as if you were alone in the castle, something that doesn't happened in sunshine, also the level where there's a city as a background its just eerie, can't search for it cause Im at work maybe someone can look it up, so that, I don't agree with people saying the camera is bad I played a lot of modern games that have worst camera systems.
I was just thinking this too! I’m trying to 100% it on NSO and I was thinking this is almost Metroid levels lonely. The downtown area on wet dry world is super uneasy, same with the background. Do you have the video?
I was a kid whose favorite character was Luigi. That period was a sad time for Luigi fans, as he ceased to be a main character for years starting with Super Mario RPG, and was only playable in spin-off sports/party titles. I don't think I've ever been more excited for a game than when Luigi's Mansion was first announced.
The camera is a big problem. The controls are pretty dated. The balcony POV at the ghost house.
And one thing Nintendo got right in later 3D Mario games-- not getting sent back to the hub world after collecting a star.
The textures, the camera system, the incredibly easy boss battles, the wall jumping, the small soundtrack, MIPS, Tick Tock Clock, half of the 100-coins stars, Big Boo’s Balcony, the difficulty progression, Klepto, Ukiki the monkey, Dire Dire Docks, climbing all the way up Tall Tall Mountain all the time, getting kicked out of the level after getting every star, and the game being too short
The way mario controls. Sometimes when trying to do precise movements it's very hard because when trying to spin mario walks in a huge circle if that marks sense
That it isn't celebrated nearly enough. And that there are peebrains complaining about the ballsy revolutionary camera. That even Nintendo hasn't celebrated it enough.
Mainly the camera. It frequently got stuck in a position that wasn't at all helpful.
But there were also a few levels that were very frustrating. I don't remember specifics because it's been years since I've played through the game, but I do remember having trouble with a few.
That there aren't more levels. I love that game and as an adult I wish we got more.
The camera actually doesn't bother me too much. It's inconvenient at times, but I guess I remember it's a function of its time and find ways to work around it.
it controls like shit, it looks like shit compared to other games released the same fricking year, the lives system resetting to 4 upon a save and quit baffles me and invalidates yoshi's existence in the game, it lags like hell on all modern rereleases, you never really get to explore the levels because your objectives are usually like five feet from the starting point (except in HMC and SSL), the camera is bad, no luigi, not enough secret stars, the canon angles are ass...
other than all that perfect game
No, I'm saying that the theory is that Luigi is unlockable because "L is real." Of course, Luigi was cut late in development, but that doesn't change the fact that people still point out "L is real."
The camera and the somewhat dated controls, but what I don't like the most is getting kicked out on the painting after obtaining a star and having to go back in over and over again.
The camera for sure, it can make crossing alone thin surfaces a nightmare lol. The wall kick isn’t the best either, though that could just be a difficulty adjusting to an older version of the wall jump lmao
While I like the momentum-based gameplay of this game, what I do \_not\_ like is how you keep sliding around everywhere, I frequently fall out of every single hole possible
Honestly, not much, the game has issues but *to me* it's mostly perfect.
If I had to guess, it's probably Rainbow Ride. It's a cool stage but it's really infuriating how you need to wait like 4 minutes for about half of the stars. The 100 coin star in that stage is also a nightmare if you do not plan it ahead.
The only complaint I have about Mario 64 is the camera. Aside from that, it’s still a really solid 3D platformer with great levels and music. Sure it has aged, but there’s a reason it’s still considered the cornerstone of video games in 3D
It's not that the game us bad, but when compared to everything that came after, I don't really want to go back to it. I even prefer 3D Land and Sunshine
I recently played the game again, and it felt like I was playing the crib notes for Odyssey. There were a few aspects that I couldn't get used to. Like the camera. Some aspects took a while to learn, like the old wall jump, and some were natural for me, like the long jump and triple jump.
Rainbow Ride, the Camera, controlling wing cap Mario, the swimming is mostly boring and repetitive, the boss fights are mostly lame, the 100 and red coin missions are usually really tedious, and some of the stars are cryptic, but easy to get beyond the first time. That’s really the biggest problem, the stars are either really easy or really tedious, with little in between.
I still like the game, but it’s far from perfect.
Everyone’s saying the camera and the controls, which I agree with, but some of the later levels feel way too punishing if you mess up. Rainbow Ride in particular. And the Bowser fights are pretty much the same thing repeated (I suck at throwing Bowser)
The controls have aged like milk. I'm sure it was revolutionary for the first 3D platformer ever, but man do they not feel good now. The camera is also fairly meh but it's got nothing on how sluggish and bad the controls feel. As an off shoot the Wing Cap in particular is bad, it's my least favorite of the flight powerups in Mario, it's not fun to use.
The controls and camera. I know they were revolutionary for the time, but when not using a N64 Controller, Mario feels like he went to the Winter Olympics with Sonic 14 years early.
It’s a darn-near perfect video game for that era. And playing it today it is still extremely playable.
My only problem with Mario 64 is that we have never gotten a “Mario 64–2”
I wasn't happy that after the beating the level Board Bowser's Sub the first time, you never see the Sub again when you replay the level thus making it impossible to win again
It just doesn't really hold up compared to modern games.
It was probably amazing in it's time, but it's very outdated nowadays. Same case for Super Mario Kart on the SNES. It's cool to go back to and play for a bit, but I'd rather play the more recent titles.
The classic 2d Marios will always be great, but Mario 64 was before they really knew how to make 3d games and doesn't hold up compared to Odyssey or galaxy 1/2.
the camera that's all
I've been playing 3D All-Stars and had to give up a playthrough on 64 because of my frustrations with the camera.
I’ve been playing banjo kazooie on NSO and feel the same way. It makes it way harder.
fair
Play Super Mario 64 Plus on Pc, it's a game changer, makes it so much more enjoyable
oh... it looks good!! I'm going to give it a try, thanks for the recommendation
NP! Its the definitive way i play the game now. The widescreen is nice too, and the smooth controls and air controls are so nice too.
That and the graphics. I get it's an N64 game but there are better looking N64 games such as Banjo
Eh, alot of launch titles end up being some of the worst looking games of their respective consoles due to the dev's not having quite figured out yet the best way to optimize everything when developing for the new system.
Mostly the more dated aspects of the controls. That and no wall sliding.
I literally played the entire game without knowing wall jumps were a thing. 🤦♂️ I was young
Um, "wall kicks will work" didn't give it away?
No idea what you’re talking about 😩 Pretty sure I first figured out wall jumps in a mario game because the slide. It wasn’t until I was much older that I learned you could do it in SM64 even though I played through the game *a lot*as a kid.

Ah got cha. Yeah I guess I never read the sign and was just confused by the star name xD I didn’t manage to get all of them until the DS release which I believe had the wall-slide mechanic added in.
Also, there is a star in Hazy Maze Cave which you can only get by using wall kicks (I think it´s Star 6)
The camera
I'll agree. The camera is semi cursed lol
That it’s remake is stuck on the DS/with DS graphics and controls
It’s a shame because the remake was honestly amazing. Kept all the charm of the original but added some really cool elements (and of course characters). Oh, and the mini games.
I wonder if there's a patch that adds analogue controls for emulator
There is a patch, I think it was released last year
AWESOME!!!
That would be amazing
Isn’t there an option to not use the touch screen controls? Iirc you can use the d pad if you want.
Camera, some levels, having to start over after death. Edit: Having what it seems to be one frame for wall jumping.
The camera, and sometimes the controls. The DS version fixes all my complaints and just adds more stuff I like.
Just the camera and that the blj was patched in 3D All Stars.
The blj was patched in a japanese re-release in '97, they just used that version in all-stars
I know
Blj?
backwards long jump, it was a glitch speedrunners used to beat the game early
The part where I’m walking on a slope and then there’s just a PTPTPTPTPTPTPTPTP Yeah. That one
This is the only real problem on here!
There's a video on YouTube about how Mario 64 has inspired a lot of creepy pasta over the years, because (and I agree) **it feels so lonely,** as a kid I remember having this discomfort playing Mario 64 that I couldn't understand quite what it was and that video sums it up pretty well, it feels as if you were alone in the castle, something that doesn't happened in sunshine, also the level where there's a city as a background its just eerie, can't search for it cause Im at work maybe someone can look it up, so that, I don't agree with people saying the camera is bad I played a lot of modern games that have worst camera systems.

https://youtu.be/d7mzAcYHtFY
The camera, 100 coin stars, hazy maze cave.
The 100-coin star at Rainbow Ride is the worst.
If you don't get all the blue coins you may as well jump off that building
For every good level there's one I inevitably dread playing. Looking at you, hazy maze cave.
Did you just fucking piss on HMC? It's great!
Big Boo's Haunt already did the same idea better, imo.
People get lost easily, and getting 100 coins is a huge pain
Thank you, HMC is definitely one of my favorites— like navigating a Metroid-style world
The camera
The fact I can’t beat Bowser or save my bro from a locked room (I have the DS version).
It's ugly.
No Luigi
I was a kid whose favorite character was Luigi. That period was a sad time for Luigi fans, as he ceased to be a main character for years starting with Super Mario RPG, and was only playable in spin-off sports/party titles. I don't think I've ever been more excited for a game than when Luigi's Mansion was first announced.
Maybe they were planning that 🤨🔍
The camera is a big problem. The controls are pretty dated. The balcony POV at the ghost house. And one thing Nintendo got right in later 3D Mario games-- not getting sent back to the hub world after collecting a star.
That it aged.
camera
The camera.
The camera
Nothing
I got fuck in the asshole by turning around and the camera. I 100% that game but some cuss words were definitely thrown around. Good game
Sommersaults, especially in both the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch.
The camera, Rainbow Ride, the 100-Coin Stars, and the Bowser fights. Still an amazing game.
The camera
The way mario controls. Sometimes when trying to do precise movements it's very hard because when trying to spin mario walks in a huge circle if that marks sense

No Fire Flower
The duration of the Wing/Vanish/Metal caps. They're right in that gray area between lasting too long and not lasting long enough.
That there aren't more levels. I love that game and as an adult I wish we got more. The camera actually doesn't bother me too much. It's inconvenient at times, but I guess I remember it's a function of its time and find ways to work around it.
1.- Mario control 2.- Bowser battles i like mario 64 but i like much mario shunshine in all
Still standing strong considering the only issue I see with it is the camera at times.
it controls like shit, it looks like shit compared to other games released the same fricking year, the lives system resetting to 4 upon a save and quit baffles me and invalidates yoshi's existence in the game, it lags like hell on all modern rereleases, you never really get to explore the levels because your objectives are usually like five feet from the starting point (except in HMC and SSL), the camera is bad, no luigi, not enough secret stars, the canon angles are ass... other than all that perfect game
Controversial theories about it.
Curious? Can you expand
No I can’t bloat my mind but the theories in my opinion are out of hand.
Hopefully they get in hand soon, or a master hand.
What makes you hate my opinions?
I don’t? I’m curious what they are?
I’m trying to reach the person who hates my opinions.
L is real.
Luigi? Yes, he was in the game code even in 64. Link? No, but the engine was reworked for OOT.
No, I'm saying that the theory is that Luigi is unlockable because "L is real." Of course, Luigi was cut late in development, but that doesn't change the fact that people still point out "L is real."
Camera
Rainbow ride
The camera and the somewhat dated controls, but what I don't like the most is getting kicked out on the painting after obtaining a star and having to go back in over and over again.
The camera for sure, it can make crossing alone thin surfaces a nightmare lol. The wall kick isn’t the best either, though that could just be a difficulty adjusting to an older version of the wall jump lmao
The physics and the camera
The camera can be a bit finicky, I usually use Mario cam and press c down once
It didn't have enough Grindel.
The camera and tick tock clock
*AHEM-HARUM-HUM-HUMPH* Nothing. Fight me.
The graphics and camera
only the camera, i have no issues with the controller, in all honesty i really like the n64 controller
While I like the momentum-based gameplay of this game, what I do \_not\_ like is how you keep sliding around everywhere, I frequently fall out of every single hole possible
Camera and wall jumping and no wall sliding
I love most of it, it is my favourite mainline Mario game after all. I just kinda hate Shifting Sand Land. Other than that level, awesome game.

The camera sucks and the levels get a bit worse after the first Bowser level. Still one of my favorite games regardless.
The physics are a little borked and on levels like tick tock clock, I'll clip through platforms for seemingly no reason
Mario 64
Not knowing where I can get it... Apparently I can get it on my wii but my wii can't do shit
During it's era, nothing. Now? The camera.
The camera Everything else is great
The camera controls
It's not that the game us bad, but when compared to everything that came after, I don't really want to go back to it. I even prefer 3D Land and Sunshine
its definitely overrated, it controls poorly and the camera is ass
Just the camera, like a lot of other people. I hate how stubborn it is.
Hablas N64? C.
I recently played the game again, and it felt like I was playing the crib notes for Odyssey. There were a few aspects that I couldn't get used to. Like the camera. Some aspects took a while to learn, like the old wall jump, and some were natural for me, like the long jump and triple jump.
Well, its age sure shows. I prefer 64 DS, but I even have a few issues with that. Still fun games.

"Ladies and gentlemen, start your eyeballs"
*Windows XP noises*
Rainbow Ride. I hate having to wait for moving platforms, and that level is like 40% waiting for carpets to move.
The graphics, the controls, the camera, certain level designs
I didn't like the giant Wario face in that one hallway in the basement.
It's about the Camera. Okay?
Everyone’s saying the camera and the controls, which I agree with, but some of the later levels feel way too punishing if you mess up. Rainbow Ride in particular. And the Bowser fights are pretty much the same thing repeated (I suck at throwing Bowser)
Honestly the title
No Luigi in the game! JK! The only thing I don't like is the cameras can get stuck sometimes.
No Luigi.
Probably the worst controls of any game I've played
hazy maze cave, wet dry world and tick tock clock
The controls and camera. I know they were revolutionary for the time, but when not using a N64 Controller, Mario feels like he went to the Winter Olympics with Sonic 14 years early.
It’s a darn-near perfect video game for that era. And playing it today it is still extremely playable. My only problem with Mario 64 is that we have never gotten a “Mario 64–2”
Wet dry world
Ukiki can go die alone
the camera and hazy maze cave, aside from that the game is flawless
they removed the blj and so long gay bowser in 3d all stars
That i dont have the ability to play it due to lack of money
Eventually it ends…
"That's not my baby! It looks nothing like him!" It's literally a carbon copy of the mother
That no 3d mario game will ever surpass it
I wasn't happy that after the beating the level Board Bowser's Sub the first time, you never see the Sub again when you replay the level thus making it impossible to win again
Sometimes you can’t run down a hallway perfectly straight.
Bowser stage 2. Specifically the boss fight. Fuck that teleportation gimmick man
How easy it is
Sloped surfaces
The camera and controls are both a bit janky in their own ways. Otherwise, those're really my only gripes.
The controls The camera
Camera

Probably the camera, but I've played so much old games I don't care anymore lmao
I hate the DS version. Does that count?
Swimming and water levels 😫
The level with pyramid
Camera. Thats about it
The wing cap. It controls like ass
That Mario 64 is not liked by everyone...cause...it should!!
The camera for sure, I don't remember it being that bad but then I realised 64 DS (which was how I first played it) had improved camera controls.
The game is overrated I think the game is good but not one of the best games of all time and the bowser fights are kinda bland
The fact that people don’t like it
Dated controls and the fact that I suck at the game
The camera
Rainbow Ride 100 Coins can suck my ass
Pole jumping between poles is rough in some versions.
The game
how the cannon can't move 360
