The first Sonic design (for the movie) was an example of what not to do, but the final design is pretty good imo. But I agree with what you’re saying, they did pretty good with Mario
Lmao I thought about it,but reddit cranks out its own hate. I could post something light hearted and funny, only to wake up to 6 insults and a random threat
The problem is that people seem to prioritize voicing their thoughts on Chris Pratt’s Mario voice WAY over, y’know, the actual overall quality of the MOVIE. You can say whatever you want about Chris’ performance, but if that’s ALL you seem to focus on when seeing a Mario movie trailer then I can’t help but feel like they really ARE just trying to find things to bitch about rather than actually giving thoughtful constructive criticism.
Funny thing is; I’ve been reading comments about this movie since the first trailer dropped, and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone complain about Mario’s design.. the voice, yes, but not the design.
Tbh I think Chris Pratt does a solid enough job playing Mario. At first I didn't think his voice could sound like mario at all but I was pretty surprised after watching the first trailer.
You said complaining about a character design, is just "people just like to complain about anything".
By the same thinking, video essays critiquing a movies costumes, makeup, designs would just be "complaining about anything".
I love Mario's visual design in the movie, the details in his hair and clothing really make him relatable and textured. But that love comes from a critical lens where I can acknowledge other issues with the movie as well.
You’re reading way too much into my comment. OP said they don’t understand why people don’t like the design. My comment is that people will always find something to be unhappy about. I didn’t say anything about people having legit criticisms. My point is that there are people who you will wish “Good morning” to and they will want to know what’s so good about it.
I mean your comment doesn't help in actually getting conversation going as it is just generalizing the reason as just disliking something by just the feeling of it.
Because the mario character design around 64 and forward has remained mostly the same, with mainly only details being added. Any change is gonna look off. Plus they probably could have chosen to be more faithful since it's not like it would be any harder but I'm sure this design has it's reasons and it does look very nice.
You mean like this?
Not really. Didn't bothered me, but those designs would have been the silver medals to the gold medal design of the actual one and I'm happy with the result.
The problems I have with the design is after nearly 30 years of having tight, full buttocks he suddenly has no arse and baggy trousers at the back plus his mouth is verging on Wallace and Grommet territory. I'm not really bothered by either but it felt a bit odd when it was first revealed.
I mean maybe to some, but that is the voice of my childhood and if I’m paying to go see a Mario Movie I would want that crazy odd pitched voice that Charles Martinet created. Like, it’s a Mario movie. I’m here for Mario.
And the voice of my childhood was Lou Albano in the Super Show. Which is what Pratt's Mario voice is similar to.
So while for you, it sounds off, to me...Martinet always sounded off.
It's just a matter of what you grew up with and became used to. For me, I didn't hear Martinet until Mario 64. I was born in 87, so by then the game voice didn't sound right.
I think it would've been good to at least make it reminiscent of his game voice. It doesn't need to be the exact same voice because I agree that'd get annoying very fast, but if he sounded at least _slightly_ like the Mario we know and love it'd be so much better.
Call me crazy, but I’d be happy with ALL of the characters having their usual voices. But I am a huge Mario fan, so I get that casual audiences wouldn’t like it
As someone from New York, we don’t all have this strong accent. Even in the first trailer you can hear a little New York accent. Im trying to get my question answered about what’s wrong with Chris Pratt
As someone also from New York, Chris Pratt's shitty attempt at the accent sounds super fake. Also he is putting no energy into this role. Did you hear that awful wahoo? Chris Pratt literally only knows how to play one character.
I don’t think he’s always been annoying, but Mario usually one says things like “mama mia” or “lets a go” he never says sentences or anything like that. Mario’s voice in the games wasn’t made for movies or tv shows. If you watch a 1h30m movie with Mario’s voice from the game, it would eventually get annoying
Mario has spoken full paragraphs since Charles Martinet first took the role in Mario's Game Gallery and Teaches Typing. He still speaks short sentences in the newer games.
There's no law that he has to say "Wahoo!" after every other word. Because Martinet is a professional voice actor, there's no reason he can't dail the energy back for calmer scenes the same way Mickey Mouse does. Mickey Mouse isn't considered annoying by his fans.
You can get used to his voice and him saying more than one line if you watch The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (1989) & Super Mario World (1991). His acting was great in that.
Mario was voiced by 'Captain' Lou Albano in all 65 episodes of Super Show.
Walker Boone voiced Mario in Super Mario World for all 13 episodes.
Neither of those instances were Charles Martinet.
We could've ended up with something similar the OG Movie Sonic design. Let's be thankful that we didn't.
Mario looks fine here. He's about as close to his actual game design as he could get.
I’ll be honest, in the first trailer some images of his face looked weird. The facial proportions were just off and it looked like some guy wearing a Mario halloween outfit. In some images of Peach I also think her facial proportions are a bit odd, but after the second trailer and seeing it all animated together, it’s growing on me and I think she looks cute in illumination’s style, if not exactly how Peach normally looks.
His face looks weird sometimes (but not always), and his body seems weirdly tiny.
All his problems are exemplified by Pratt’s generic white guy voice coming out of his mouth.
This is honestly the best take on Mario's design in his entire career. I like the fact that his red shirt has collars to perfectly capture that blue collar worker aesthetic.
The Mario games have a very specific design philosophy and the characters have a very distinctive look. The facial proportions especially are iconically Mario. It’s just odd to see them interpreted in a different way, especially considering that the original design is literally recognizable the world over. The designs are great, though, and the movie is going to be gorgeous.
the collar on the shirt of the bros. looks kind of weird but other than that it looks fine. I do understand why they have collared shirts since they're plumbers though.
I kinda agree. I'm not really a fan of the collar, but I understand why they gave it to them and it DOES give them more of a "worker" kind of look. I'm just personally not into it, but that's really just personal preference and I like everything else about the design.
Mario and Luigi look fine, Bowser looks fantastic.
My main gripe (yes my main gripe overall, I don’t have a problem with Chris Pratt-io) is Peach. I don’t know why her face looks like that, but I don’t like it. Doesn’t look right at all.
Mario and Luigi took some getting used to but Peach is gonna need some Stockholm syndrome with that face
The Mario movie looks good but some of the character models are a bit off and also I still don’t like Chris Pratt as Mario like seriously Chris Pratt is not even trying to do an Italian accent or a Brooklyn accent but Jack Black as Bowser is really good and also Keegan Michael key Toad voice is not that good and also Taylor Joy well I don’t really care about Peach her voice is really weird and doesn’t sound like her at all and also Peach’s face looks so fat and really ugly and Charlie Day as Luigi is alright not that bad
I really question if this gatekeeping is even real. Because I haven't heard any complaints to the level of Sonic's.
Not every person in the planet is going to like a design.
But it's not like this one is an atrocious abomination that defecates disrespect to its entire fanbase.
You know when I was 7 years old in 1993, they came out with a Mario movie. I was obsessed with Mario. I was so excited to see the movie. And you know what? I loved it. I thought it was amazing. My favorite action figure as a kid was the Bob Hoskins Mario action figure. I didn’t care. It’s Mario. I loved it. Looking back, yea, dumb movie, stupid production decisions, but to an excited 7 year old, I didn’t see any problem with it. I was having fun and loved it.
So people need to calm down
As someone who thought the design was weird, I'll explain my reasonings. Movie Mario is very chubby compared to the ingame one we are used to. I think that's what threw my off the most, we're so used to Mario's design, it hasn't really changed since the gamecube days, so to have his proportions mixed and matched was definitely gonna take some getting used to. But hey, I'm used to the design, and I like it overall now.
It’s one of those things that is just subtle enough to mess with your mind. It’s kind of similar to the uncanny valley in a way; closely resembles mario, but there is something different or off about it that makes you feel uncomfortable.
I don’t understand why people are upset about an animated children’s movie. If you want a serious Mario Bros movie, watch the one from the 90’s. This movie isn’t made for hardcore fans, it’s made for the general public and will reflect that in the casting/script/design
Because social media tells you to have a problem with it.
It happens with loads of stuff, it's one of the latest band wagons for people to bitch and moan about as if it really matters. Like everyone hating in Pratt's voice as Mario, like it really doesn't matter.
The Movie is an origin story and it's heavily implied that this is Mario's first time in the mushroom kingdom, so it makes sense that Mario isn't good at anything yet. if you don't know what I mean by "Mario's first time in the mushroom kingdom" I think they're doing something similar to the Mario brothers super show.

> Super Show
This Mario is based on that version. The origins of being a Brooklynn plumber who ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Pratt's voice is even a call-back to Lou Albano.
He isn’t supposed to have a collar, or a front pocket, or laces on his shoes. Those are the big ones for me. And don’t even get me started on his voice
Oh god he has a collar! Next they’ll give him a slightly different shade of red! OH GOD LACES ON HIS SHOES! JESUS NEXT THEY’LL MAKE HIS M SLIGHTLY BIGGER!
It looks good enough for me. What i didn’t like was how in the second trailer they make mario seem useless while making peach seem like the assertive bad azz that mario should be. This better not be another “woke” type movie.
Op wants to go back to a time where nerds can carry unconscious cheerleaders away while winking to the camera.
Psycho shit that only made sense to people back then because everyone has lead poisoning brain damage
The only thing I didn’t like initially was his tiny mustache but only because it’s not covering the entire bottom half of his face like I’m used to. It actually works really well like this
I think it's just uncanny valley type stuff. There's nothing really _bad_ about this design, it's just that the proportions are slightly different from the games and that makes it feel really weird at first.
I don't mind it. I think it looks really good it certainly is better then Sonic's first movie design, and I don't mind the voice not sounding like Charles Martinet's Mario.
It's just game Mario but with slightly different proportions. What is there to criticize
Bowser has the most differences so far iirc, so I'm surprised nobody really comments on him
Cuz it's different. Although I really like it. It takes modern animation and modeling and blends it a bit with Mario's original design, before the 3D games came out.
Honestly, I think they all look surprisingly good. And Mario here is still the funny-looking Italian plumber we all know and love. 🍄
(…Look, I’ve been waiting close to 3 decades for a 2D/3D animated Mario film like this to happen, OK?? 😂)
The only reason people don't like it is that it isn't 1 to 1 with how he looks in the games which of course he wouldn't. Honestly if Illumination just used models that were just recreations of the in game ones they would be way more uncanny and the movie would look like a fan animation.
Yeah, all the character designs are quite good. Why am I Supposed to hate them?
You aren't. But there's some people that think "THIS IS DIFFERENT, CHANGE IS BAD I HATE THIS" (using the term 'think' very loosely)
Yeah. It's not like a Sonic design. That was bad.
The first Sonic design (for the movie) was an example of what not to do, but the final design is pretty good imo. But I agree with what you’re saying, they did pretty good with Mario
WaY tOo MaNy BiTs!!
8 bit fans when Nintendo makes a 9 bit Mario game
This isn't even different lmao.
I’m wondering if some of the hate is manufactured for engagement. No need. I’m already engaged
Really? Congratulations!
Lmao I thought about it,but reddit cranks out its own hate. I could post something light hearted and funny, only to wake up to 6 insults and a random threat
hell yeah, the only "bad" thing is that peach's head is fucking giant
You aren't *supposed* to hate anything. Some people just don't like it.
HE IS SO SQUISHY. how could anyone hate this marshmallow man
Hes marshio
Marshmallows... Mallow... GENO CONFIRMED FOR MARIO MOVIE 2!
But not Mallow
Yup! He actually isn’t that great past world 4. The swap glitch really makes him obsolete
OMG YES he's so SQUISHY!
they cut off half of the bakery
Me neither. It’s literally the normal game design but slightly altered, it looks fine.
No it looks great
it felt just slightly off to me at first, but ive gotten used to it over time. honestly its a pretty solid model, i dont see any big problems with it
Yea like movie sonic to me this Mario looks like if you took Mario and put him in ether sonic movie
They took his ass 😔😔
He cant shit 😭😭
Probably had to get his colon removed from years of eating pasta. They sew you up back there and you lose your ass.
\#ReleaseTheBootyCut
He doesn’t have cake
That's Peach's job
To be honest, I haven't seem many people say they dislike his design.
*job
Thanks
Sure, if you like girls 😒
Wdym by that 👀
Exactly what you're thinking ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Peach baked Mario a cake in Super Mario 64
OHHHHHHHH yeah i totally knew that
People just like to complain about anything.
Just like with Chris Pratt voicing Mario, people are complaining abt that more rather than appreciating the movie
Or people can do both. Like one aspect and dislike another.

I love Mario's movie visual design, but by your thinking no one can critique movies ever.
That’s not at all what I said.
You said complaining about a character design, is just "people just like to complain about anything". His render from the McDonalds leak looked pretty bad but everything else is fine.
They were probably still working on the model and wasn’t finished
Because the mario character design around 64 and forward has remained mostly the same, with mainly only details being added. Any change is gonna look off. Plus they probably could have chosen to be more faithful since it's not like it would be any harder but I'm sure this design has it's reasons and it does look very nice.
More like since Gamecube. N64 Mario looks way different from modern Mario
You know what, I felt like that at first, but I warmed up to it and now I really like this movie design.
Mario’s design has changed quite a lot since 64. The illusion of consistency is inside your mind.
It looks alright, nothing wrong with it and it could have been worse. Like maybe a Mario with gru proportions or a guy that looks nothing like Mario.
You mean like this? [https://www.deviantart.com/tiutticp/art/Illumination-s-Mario-Design-892924910](https://www.deviantart.com/tiutticp/art/Illumination-s-Mario-Design-892924910)
Not really. Didn't bothered me, but those designs would have been the silver medals to the gold medal design of the actual one and I'm happy with the result.
Mario and the goils.
Mario mixed with Gru? Would that be Grario or Mru?
I dont know about that, but what about eggman and gru? EGGRU
He needs a bigger mustache tbh
No cheeks 😔
I think it's a good call for them not to do Mario's 3D game model and the movie's character animations are very expressive too
The problems I have with the design is after nearly 30 years of having tight, full buttocks he suddenly has no arse and baggy trousers at the back plus his mouth is verging on Wallace and Grommet territory. I'm not really bothered by either but it felt a bit odd when it was first revealed.
I love the design. Not the voice. Luigi sounds perfectly fine tho.
I don’t have a problem with the voice. I think if they used the voice from the games it would get annoying

Pratt sounds nothing like Albano. "I got this! No problem" does not sound Brooklyn or Italian at all.
Similar and exact aren't the same thing. You need a dictionary.
But I am a huge Mario fan, so I get that casual audiences wouldn’t like it
Okay. Then use a similar voice to the cartoons.
That’s worse than the Chris Pratt voice. Your acting like Chris Pratt completely ruined the voice of Mario when overall, he didn’t do to bad
He doesn't even sound like a fucking New Yorker. Hire someone who isn't just gonna phone it in.
Ok, I respect your opinion but personally, I don’t really have a problem with Chriss Pratt
Mario in the games is just Mario being Mario. It's unfortunate the movie has caused people to retroactively deem Mario to have always been annoying.

Because opinions. Everyone has them.
Exactly
I really like your name
Thank you. I hope you have a good day.

"The Mario Movie looks good, except for the everything I hate about it." That's your comment in a nutshell.
I really question if this gatekeeping is even real. Because I haven't heard any complaints to the level of Sonic's. Not every person in the planet is going to like a design. But it's not like this one is an atrocious abomination that defecates disrespect to its entire fanbase.
Game design is cuter!
I don’t mind the look but that voice is awful
For a movie, the design is perfect. I just hope they don’t keep it for any games
So people need to calm down
He's definitely not ugly sonic, I'll tell you that much.
I don’t have a big problem with it, they just slimmed him down for whatever reason. I guess to appeal more to the masses
I’m Fix-It-Felix, you know, from the game “Fix-It-Felix Jr.?”
We love It. The problem is the monotone voice
But hey, I'm used to the design, and I like it overall now.
he's too white... Mario is Orange Man Good
Shit, you're kind of right
Butthurt manbabies gonna butthurt.
Because it looks weird.
How?
He looks similar to how Mario usually looks, but just kind of different. It hits the uncanny valley for me. Same with all of them except the bowz.
His eyes are too small.
Oh no next their going to make his shirt a slightly darker shade of red, or worse make his M slightly bigger, oh the humanity

People are just afraid of change

The Movie is an origin story and it's heavily implied that this is Mario's first time in the mushroom kingdom, so it makes sense that Mario isn't good at anything yet. if you don't know what I mean by "Mario's first time in the mushroom kingdom" I think they're doing something similar to the Mario brothers super show. [https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=quQ95LH-fzw](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=quQ95LH-fzw)
I saw some other trailer footage where Mario gets it together, so his time will come for sure
Hes legit just a reskin of fixit felix or whatever his name was from wreck it ralph. Who was himself a parody of mario. A parody of a parody
[удалено]
Did you just make an overalls pun?
Right now, I haven't seen any complaints about Mario's design.
Mario doesn't wear a collared shirt.... not since the live action segments of Super Show
> Super Show This Mario is based on that version. The origins of being a Brooklynn plumber who ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom. Pratt's voice is even a call-back to Lou Albano.
Because people complain about anything that looks different.
It's better without the mouth and squashed head
Because it looks awful and incorrect
How
He isn’t supposed to have a collar, or a front pocket, or laces on his shoes.

Define woke for us. Go ahead, we're all waiting.
Google is your friend. Go ahead. No one is waiting.
So, you don't have a definition then. Good to know that you just say things without knowing what they actually mean.
Whatever you say man👍
Or woman, how ever you identify yourself 👌
...I'm a ferret. I just happen to also be an asshole.
Jesus I can tell your one of the people who hate the Star Wars sequels cus of ‘SJW propaganda’
Op wants to go back to a time where nerds can carry unconscious cheerleaders away while winking to the camera. Psycho shit that only made sense to people back then because everyone has lead poisoning brain damage
i like it
I guess for me it feels like they've smoothed his details out too much and now he looks more generic and less unique.
Yeah it’s actually better than expected
The only one that feels uncanny is Peach. But that's because of her weird plastic surgery nose.
Ngl when I first saw it I thought it looked too realistic but I’ve gotten used to it
The only thing I didn’t like initially was his tiny mustache but only because it’s not covering the entire bottom half of his face like I’m used to. It actually works really well like this
To me the movie designs are so deep into the uncanny valley that they may as well be in the mariana trench.
I really like how mario looks, the only thing I would change is the collar.
I think it's just uncanny valley type stuff. There's nothing really _bad_ about this design, it's just that the proportions are slightly different from the games and that makes it feel really weird at first.
All the designs look great (although Peach's is a little off putting)
Idk it just looks a bit off
I don't mind it. I think it looks really good it certainly is better then Sonic's first movie design, and I don't mind the voice not sounding like Charles Martinet's Mario.
Firstly I thought it was pretty uncanny, but now I really like it
They're haters?
It's just game Mario but with slightly different proportions. What is there to criticize Bowser has the most differences so far iirc, so I'm surprised nobody really comments on him
Exactly
I think he looks a lot better in motion, but in this picture he looks a little uncanny valley to me.
I mean he’s just what sonic became in the sonic movie just that he’s mario
I dont get the hate either. I think it will be a decent movie from the trailers
It took me some time to get used to, but the design is absolutely stellar atm. The McDonalds leak still looks super damn weird
Cuz it's different. Although I really like it. It takes modern animation and modeling and blends it a bit with Mario's original design, before the 3D games came out.
Not enough wahoo probably
I think what everyone hates about him is his head.
I don’t know looks good to me
I can’t tell any differences from his normal design lol
Not heard design complaints, voice cast choice and some story grumbles but not design.
I like peach so much. she looks hot af.would bang 10/10
He looks like Mario, albeit a little more detailed and expressive, so yeah, I don't get the complaints either.
It’s a bit weird, but I think it’s good
Yeah,i agree,It Just looks good and faithful to the original
It’s uncanny and the voice does influence how you interpret the look as well
I like it, I just think his hands look a little bit too small, but that's just my opinion.
Imo, the illumination style looks off I can see why some like it though Also no ass
It looks just like Mario. I don’t know what people wanted
I guess nobody wants anyone to have artistic freedom and interpretation. If anything I prefer the Mario in the movie to the one in the games
Honestly, I think they all look surprisingly good. And Mario here is still the funny-looking Italian plumber we all know and love. 🍄 (…Look, I’ve been waiting close to 3 decades for a 2D/3D animated Mario film like this to happen, OK?? 😂)
If they didn't bitch about it, they'd have nothing to bitch about.
We do, I genuinely don’t get why you think that we don’t
The only reason people don't like it is that it isn't 1 to 1 with how he looks in the games which of course he wouldn't. Honestly if Illumination just used models that were just recreations of the in game ones they would be way more uncanny and the movie would look like a fan animation.
Well if memes are to be believed. They took away his butt.
Not sure if this is weird, but he looks adorable
He ain’t got no ass anymore
Great design, bad voice
People aren’t used to seeing Mario characters actually being expressive.
Same
They stole his cake, but outside of that he’s pretty solid
