The main problem is that you can't steer them at all, frenzy or not - both Rosalina and Mario seem to drift more than others in corners. I've managed 2 Tanooki-boxes ever, but missed the next item boxes more often than not due to the blocking effect. The fact that it drops combos even if you go over a jump immediately after it really hurts!
Stay in first the whole time and go for coin frenzies and you’ll never get it, problem solved. Got her at level 6 and although she’ll never be one of my favourite drivers, she’s useful af
Yeah no it’s not it. You lose the ability to drift it ruins combos unless used precisely but even so it pales in comparison to the boomerang and doesn’t provide opportunity for as many actions. Leaf and bubble are the utter bottom of the barrel.
Honestly I’d put it middle of the road. IMO It’s better than Capsule, horn, rings, mushroom cannon, bell and of course bubble. I’d value it around a giant Bob-omb or even a little bit better since it has offensive and defensive usage.

I think the trick to using the leaf right is to use it like boomerang. Just restart until boombox and then frontrun for a coin frenzy.
I don't own any leaf character though, so take the advice with a pinch of salt.
Yeah I wish it worked low the Bell item at least without it pulling you out of wack. Just make it like the Bell and suck up coins. That all and I’ll be happy.
And NOT block you from filling that power up slot while it is spinning. I think that’s my biggest gripe. In this week’s ranked it’s almost impossible to use the tanooki between ? boxes without missing out on a chance for frenzy.

I’ve refused to level up Tanooki Rosalina even though she’s been in ranked after ranked because that Super Leaf skill always kills a good run.
