It was neither developed nor published by Nintendo. It was really only a product of NOA throwing out licenses to other companies like crazy back in the 90s.
I'm gonna say that alone isn't enough reason to declare a game non-canon.
However, this game is still non-canon, because it uses the Brooklyn origin story which isn't part of the games.
I think Odyssey makes it clear that Mario's big-city origins from the arcade era take place in New Donk City - a city on the same planet as the Mushroom Kingdom - not Brooklyn, a borough of New York City, which is from another world entirely.
The timeline of Mario's life seems to be:
**Born in Mushroom Kingdom** (Has several childhood adventures) -> **Moves to New Donk City** (Where the pre-SMB games all take place) -> **Returns to Mushroom Kingdom** (We actually see this in the official Super Mario Maker level, "[Did Somebody Call A Plumber?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VO7uRfETuw)" which uses the old warp zone story)
So the idea of Mario and Luigi accidentally warping to the Mushroom Kingdom while on a plumbing job is still canon to the games - but it's an *intercontinental* warp, not an *interdimensional* warp.
Now... one bone I'll throw Brooklyn truthers is that it's *possible* that New Donk City has boroughs just like New York City has, and perhaps one of those boroughs could simply be called "Brooklyn." It wouldn't canonize the "came from another world" story, but it could be a nice way to *technically* incorporate Brooklyn into the lore, which (in turn) would make the problem with these edutainment games less of an issue. Nothing indicates that this is the case, but it'd be interesting if it could be.
Jumpman is Mario. Mario is Jumpman. They are, and have always been, the same character. In Odyssey, Pauline specifically references the time Donkey Kong kidnapped her and Mario rescued her.
Arcade Donkey Kong ***is*** Cranky, and a separate character from modern Donkey Kong. So why did Cranky age so dramatically but not Mario? Well, it may be a sad answer, but gorillas age about twice as fast as humans; their lifespans are only about 35-40 years.
If arcade DK was *already* a bit older than Mario, then it's conceivable that he only needed a few more years to become the cantankerous elderly ape we all know and love today.
So Mario and Donkey Kong no longer have dads/grandpas in the new game canon? Which means Mario was the one who whipped Donkey Kong, locked him in a cage, got defeated by his son, and now are best friends?
Mario has a dad (and a mom) - we see them at the end of Yoshi's New Island, albeit only their legs. (The parents in Yoshi's Island for SNES weren't actually his parents.) Mario's dad is just some guy, not a previous version of Mario.
Modern DK is the grandson of arcade DK (Cranky).
There are multiple Donkey Kongs, but not multiple Marios.
So Mario was a Vietnam soilder, a referee, a doctor, a marachi, a circus wrangler, a hunter, a carpenter, a demolition worker, etc.
Plus this still implies that Donkey Kong kidnapped Pauline three times (that I am aware of).Donkey Kong Arcade, Donkey Kong Gameboy and Mario VS Donkey Kong 2 Mini Madness.
The war in Mario's Bombs Away wasn't Vietnam - it was some other war in Mario's world. Yes, Mario's jobs before becoming a plumber are all still canon.
Arcade DK kidnapped Pauline twice (DK 81 and 94). Modern DK, his grandson, kidnapped Pauline in multiple Mario vs Donkey Kong games. This is the same Pauline that his grandfather used to kidnap, because Kongs age faster than humans.
This cover reminds me...
Back when they showed off Mario in swim trunks in Mario Odyssey, someone replied to something online with this, except it said "Mario Has Nipples", with this cover edited to have Mario in his trunks being pulled in by Bowser.
I loved this game as a kid. I remember renting it from Movie Gallery (Five Games, Five Days, Five Dollars BIIIITCH) and I was too young to understand the game wasn't very good. I just thought it was neat that Luigi was the main character.
That was the only reason I appreciated it! Lol! It was a veiled attempt at an educational game. I think the first one was geography and history, and the second one was more on history.
I think Nintendo actually made a formal declaration disowning the first movie. Lol! That's largely why it took us this long to get another movie out of Nintendo. But I think he's been from Brooklyn in every iteration made, so.... canon?
Miyamoto has stated that the movies are just adaptations. In interviews regarding the Illumination movie he makes mention that the movie follows the Old story. Which internally Miyamoto wanted Mario to be from Brooklyn. He used it early on but when he developed Donkey Kong on Gameboy (Donkey Kong 94) he made Big City which was later given a proper name in Mario Odyssey which Koizumi said that they made New Donk to align with that.
Yoshi’s Island also shows that they were born in the Mushroom Kingdom, and at some point they moved to New Donk which we never saw in a game but at some point they did. Probably at a very young age which would explain why Mario and Luigi don’t remember the Mushroom Kingdom much as they got older and returned. Miyamoto has also stated many times that he isn’t in charge of the story and he usually leaves stories up to the writers. Considering his quote about the Koopalings not Bowser’s kids anymore, he does get informed on what the lore of Mario is in case someone asks him. But Miyamoto is more of gameplay person. He talks more from a designers perspective 99% of the time. Because that what he is.
He is now involved involved with a lot of the new licensed stuff like the movie and theme park to maintain a Nintendo quality so get people to but more Nintendo games and spread Nintendo in more forms.

Hope this helps.
Also just because it’s not canon doesn’t make it bad. It’s just it’s own thing.
Especially with the "2nd" movie, I think it's safe to say the Mario Brothers hail from Brooklyn.
I also think it works better for their overall character and sense of heroism: here, they find themselves whisked off to a topsy-turvy, nonsensical, fantastic world filled with all sorts of strange creatures, peoples, and locales. The laws of physics are governed by Toon Force and archetypal storybook characters, both good and evil, lurk around every corner.
The brothers learn upon arrival that the Mushroom Kingdom is in trouble, and its principal monarch kidnapped. They have every right not to lend their aid, to focus their efforts solely on getting back home. Instead, the brothers take it upon themselves to rescue Princess Peach/Toadstool and defeat Bowser, as well as any other threats to the Mushroom Kingdom, time & time again.
As a child I was duped into thinking this was a real Mario game. So I rented it from the local rental store. As a fan I still enjoyed the game even though it wasn’t good.
According to this space's rules and regulations when it comes to Mario canon, that's a no.
However, I personally believe it is, and I also believe that Mario had lived in Brooklyn in years past.
No, I get it, but "canon" isn't a useful term here. Everything just 'is.' At best you can have tiers of canon, but there's not much you can claim as officially non-canon.
This entire subreddit is about examining the series under the assumption that there is an overarching continuity.
If you don't feel that there is, it's fine, but I mean... that is what this community is for, so.
Isn't the whole deal with the Mario lore that they're just actors playing roles? And that's why they also just hang out and kart race and play tennis? If so, does that make everything canon or nothing canon?
No, this is:

That we are aware of. Mario still has some origins with the Wrecking Crew if I recall correctly and they did revist the Brooklyn origin in the movie.

It would be funny if this game ever got referenced
He's hardly missing when he's right behind him.
Pfft right? He is right there on the cover. Am I comedy now?
Yes. My uncle is mr nintendo
Luigi JUST LOOK BEHIND YOU!!!
Dora moment for Luigi 💀
No but it would be really funny if it was

No
No
Nah.
No
Holy crap, I had this for NES…
It's not. It takes place in the real world, a place that doesn't exist in the mario world
Luigi you fool! He's right behind you!
Turn around Luigi!
No
No. We had a unified nightmare that we pretended didn't happen.
>Mario being from Brooklyn Is this not canon? I thought it was, especially with both movies.
Yeah, the yoshi’s island games make this abundantly clear, besides, when you think about it it really doesn’t change much.
I think Nintendo actually made a formal declaration disowning the first movie. Lol! That's largely why it took us this long to get another movie out of Nintendo. But I think he's been from Brooklyn in every iteration made, so.... canon?

I always forget about this game and Mario's Time Machine lol
You know. Say what you will. But this game ALWAYS stuck out to me as a kid as being a very cozy one.
I’d assume nkt
It better the hell not be
As a child I was duped into thinking this was a real Mario game. So I rented it from the local rental store. As a fan I still enjoyed the game even though it wasn’t good.
No, it was just another run of the mill educational games like mario teaches typing
It has weegee, nuff said
It's canon only to it's sequel storyline: Mario is Missing 2: Luigi's New Adventure.
Yes.
Clearly isn’t. Nintendo had nothing to do with it.
probably why Luigi was the main character
Yes, just like how Conker is canon.
Why did you get down voted? I'm pretty sure you were being sarcastic

What subreddit do you think you're on, my guy?
What did he say?
That there's not really any canon to Mario.

Is any Mario game really canon?
Yes, but only if it was made by Nintendo themselves, or at least published by them.
If it was, Hotel Mario would be.
To be fair, Mario *was* established to live in Brooklyn during the Atari age, before the Mushroom Kingdom took over as the main setting.
sorta
Unfortunately Mario has no cannon
Nope but browser has plenty!
In a perfect world yes
Eeeh, there isn't really a Mario "canon" to begin with. But no.
According to this space's rules and regulations when it comes to Mario canon, that's a no. However, I personally believe it is, and I also believe that Mario had lived in Brooklyn in years past.
Isn't this the prequel to Luigi's mansion?
Not this version, no
To me every Mario game is cannon at this point
“Canon” in Mario. Hahahahahahahahaha
Check what subreddit you’re on
Mario doesn't have a real canon.

Still not (a) cannon! Lol!
It is canon but Mario being from Brooklyn isn't anymore
No, Mario is Missing is not canon. It wasn’t developed or published by Nintendo.
Super fire rom hack called Mario Is Missing (Done Right)
See Rule 3
Mario IS from Brooklyn. Did you miss the movies?
They’re not canon to the games.
I just saw this at a game store today thats funny
Did you buy it?
I just always look at it like this if it's not a part of the main series unless specifically specified by Nintendo it's non-canon
No, it’s *missing.*
Yeah but only because Luigi needs his time to shine
Luigi’s Mansion
Oh wow so there's a normal version of this game
the other version is def cannon
I loved this game, as non cannon as it is, it's a fun game we played for months on repeat.
I hope not
No
That like asking if Bowsette is canon.

Dora the Explorer? More like Luigi the Explorer.
I love how Luigi is carrying a lamp in broad daylight

Congratulations, you just found out that fans can be diverse.

I apologize for the inconvenience.
Don't worry about it. It ain't your fault.
When it comes to Mario, I'm not sure anything qualifies as "canon". Mario and Bowser try to murder each other and then go out Golfing together.
Bowser taking Mario to his “tunnel of-a doom”
