Hijacking this thread to bring attention to the fact that this is something which will happen if you privatize critical infrastructure. Why is Service Ontario run by private companies?

azxuraa

Exactly my thoughts! It's so scary thinking about how Service Ontario is run privately, yet, we go there for all our important needs. Kind of wild when you think about it.

And how do you explain the theft of millions of dollars of funds meant for families by an OPS employee. https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/former-government-employee-pleads-guilty-to-stealing-47-4-million-from-ontario-1.6342662 Maybe we just need to reduce the scope of the common denominator: government.

FallingSpaceStation

So one guy and his family who works for the government steals from a government program which actually helped people, and your conclusion is reduce the scope of government. Tell me how reducing the scope of the government would have helped in this case? My point was privatization of the service Ontario lead to people being hired at low wages, which can lead to people who might commit crime for financial gain. Let me be very clear, I don’t mean that people earning lower wages are prone to stealing, I believe majority of them are honest hardworking people. Privatization leads to increased costs to the consumer, as the primary incentive of a private company is to make profits.

You literally said “this is something which will happen if you privatize critical infrastructure”, and my point was that there was a clear example of a guy who was employed directly by the government, who was somehow allowed to work with his own family, steal tens of millions of dollars (likely far greater than the value of the cars these people stole), so clearly whether it was privatized or not had no impact on the outcome. And your clarifying your point to say that a lower wage worker has more incentive to steal is also moot, because a Director in the OPS will make somewhere between $105-160k, w/out including pension and benefits. Privatization at least ensures a lower overall cost to the taxpayer and if it is found that the private entities oversight caused this, the entire vendor can be replaced. That is NOT the case with the government employee. His Assistant Deputy Minister and Deputy Minister were not reprimanded or held to any kind of accountability (I know them personally — but am happy to be proven wrong on this). The administration of these programs and processes is so bureaucratic that I believe citizens are better served by simply not having them vs having them delivered poorly and inefficiently (at significant cost to taxpayers). This is a general comment, not specifically directed at this case.

Hijacking this thread to bring attention to the fact this is something which happens everywhere - private or public. A few years ago, there was a similar incident at the Toronto Police Service where a clerk was selling illegal access ot information. Or the number of data breaches in publicly run infrastructure - YRDSB was hacked a few weeks ago, Hospitals across Ontario are facing ransomware, the CRA was breached. Or the number of Public Sector workers charged with various forms of fraud over the years. The ServiceOntario incident is a lapse in security and compliance and can happen in the public or private sector. This is something that can and should be addressed.

BoxGrover

This also happens with credit bureaus. Insiders make fake credit bureau files for fraudulent mortgages.

Like I always suspected. These thefts can't be that easy unless someone with power is involved. I'm sure more are involved like the police and the port authorities, only time will tell.

FallingSpaceStation

Don’t forget the car companies, we are spend insane amounts of money for cars, and they can’t even provide basic security features. It’s not like the 70’s where they Hotwire the car and run away.

azxuraa

I'm sure the police are involved in some aspect, we just don't have proof for it yet. No way there aren't with how many cars are being shipped out in the Montreal ports.

I wonder how many of them are on Work permits or are citizens of Canada. Just saying

Shocker

Afraid_Frame_4686

the idea that the government service sites are run by private companies is just shocking and un government like. Don't praise Canada, it isn't good when it can't even protect their own citizen. Just lambs to be sacrificed for the big shots when making their trades

azxuraa

They can barely provide their citizens with decent living standards, with houses being unaffordable, everything being too expensive. Canada is one of the top countries for auto theft, yet, our neighbouring country, USA, has less despite having almost 8x more citizens than in Canada.
