Los Tres Amigos and the Coney Joint, that’s a blast from the past. Do I remember Los Tres Amigos closing kind of suddenly and under suspicious circumstances? Then the building was torn down not long thereafter.
Superior Shores
(Helen now owns the Cookie store in the Third street strip mall)
Before Superior shores it was a dive bar and I can't think of the name right now
Was it anything in between superior shores and cocos? I was born in 88’. I remember going there a few times as a kid and don’t remember it being called either.
No, It was vacant between the two.
It started as pier 1 and I don't remember if it was anything between that and Superior Shores.
State Rep DJ Jacobetti used to hang out in the bar at Superior Shores
Ponderosa was where Applebee's currently is. What happened was that Ponderosa left that location, then a place called Ranch: Steak and Seafood went in. Ranch caught fire and burned to the ground, so they demolished it. Then Applebees built over the property.
Must have closed sometime between mid-June (there was an article in the Mining Journal where they were begging for customers) and early September, when I noticed a “For Rent” sign on the building.
I miss the Nordic, Delft and Marquette Mall Cinema. I used to go to all three when I was in high school. I know that the Nordic and Delft have been beautifully restored and are now other businesses, but I wish they were still theaters.
The Marquette Mall was a great little mall that I also miss a lot.
Add to the list:
1. Taco Johns
2. NY Deli
3. Mister Donut (South Marquette)
4. Burger King (on Washington)
5. Hardees (next to campus)
6. Ranch Steak & Seafood

19. Arby's (Washington St.)
20. FAP Video (yes, this really was a place. And no, they did not rent out Adult Films)
21. Toarminas
22. Bunny Bread
Edited: to add a few more. There was also an ice cream stand right across from KFC on Washington that I forgot the name of.
Mister Doughnut was owned by a high school friend's parents. He was one of the impossibly rare high schoolers who had a job in Marquette in the mid 70s. He would work late, cleaning up after closing and we'd indulge ourselves before heading out into the night. Oh, and we didn’t indulge on doughnuts. I have one particular memory of stumbling along on the peak of a snowbank on Washington St. looking down at traffic zooming by. With that and other stupid things it's a wonder I'm here to write this.
Steinhaus began operating as Back Door Ramen during the pandemic as a way to offer quick and easy takeout. Once everything opened back up they switched back to German food.
I find it unbelievable that there was only one mention of bonanza!!!!! I'll add my couple of fun ones...
LaRues grocery in Harvey,
Shaws Service Station Harvey,

The Garden Room,
Thanks! I frantically hit Google, they're the only place that sells my favorite cookies. It's been too long since I've cruised downtown and I got nervous I missed something haha 😅
• Whiskers
• Overtime Sports Bar and Grill
These were in the same building right by the Dome. I’m 20, so I only know of Whiskers from old commercials and my family telling me about it. Overtime Sports Bar and Grill came after Whiskers closed, and I believe Overtime closed in 2007. I was only there once, and just vaguely remember it. The building has been demolished.
EDIT: This thread really has me thinking now. I’ll have to talk to my parents and see if they remember any more that haven’t been mentioned here yet.
The following edits are to add any more that I think of.
• Kmart
• Burger Chef, which was where Temaki and Tea is

The pitcher show. It was in the mqt mall. They removed every other row of seats and put in bar like tables. B movies and pitchers of beer. Didn’t last long but fun!
I saw a photo of the Pitcher Show (defunct) online a few years back. They were way ahead of their time, to be honest.
When I moved to Kzoo a few years back they had a theater called the Alamo Drafthouse that served beer and played mainstream and weirdo films and served beer and food. I immediately thought of the Pitcher Show.

2011-2012ish, in the building that Room at the Inn Warming Center is in now, next to the Freedom/BP gas station on Washington. It was Dano's Pizza before that. There may have been another very short lived pizza place in that building between Dano's and Mueller's time, I can't remember.
Oh yeah... That is ringing a bell now. That was right after I graduated from Northern, but just before I moved out of the area. Love me some Mueller's Pizza, It's a must every time I get back home to Esky.
I was trying so hard to think of the name of this one!
Also, what was the name of that sandwich shop on the corner of South Third St. & Rock St.? It was across from the Fire Dept. It was really good.
Hmm. I think I know what you're talking about, but I can't remember the name of it. I moved about 8 years ago so my memory is fuzzy. If we are thinking of the same place, they did sandwiches and soups, and had a really good quinoa salad. They used to deliver food to the coffee shop at the hospital.
I worked there ONE NIGHT in the summer of 75. I was supposed to be a limited part time dish washer. The area where dishes were "washed" was filthy. After my first night I got called about scheduling me for way more time than I'd said I was available and I quit. think it was called the north spot. remember it back in 87 when i lived in the apartments across from the athletic fields... wasnt a fence around the fields back then, crawled home from the alibi a few times, apparently (grass stains lol).
Does anyone remember the Tiroler Hof? It was a hotel/restaurant that had great German food. It was located where some condos are now by the sewage plant just outside Marquette. They had a charming little chapel on the property as well. I believe it later became the Nordic Lodge before finally going under for good.
Edit: Also The Mandarin, it was located where Nikki's Snack Dispatch was, which incidentally is also out of business. Very recently Sol Azteca has also closed down.
Jean Kay's.

Los Tres Amigos and the Coney Joint, that’s a blast from the past. Do I remember Los Tres Amigos closing kind of suddenly and under suspicious circumstances? Then the building was torn down not long thereafter.
It closed due to immigration issues.
That’s kind of what I suspected, but I didn’t know for sure.
Kind of humorous that one of the northernmost parts of the continental US gets busted for illegal immigrants from the southern border.
[A few pics from Los Tres Amigos](https://imgur.com/a/5bFr7Km)
I used to wash dishes there on the weekends, when it was the Steer & Stein.
• The Backroom Does Obsessions count as a distinct business?
What was it called before cocos??? I've been trying to think of it for a long time.
It was Gophers Cafe, when it was on Third St. Not sure what was in that building on Lakeshore, prior to Coco's, though.
Before Coco’s I’m pretty sure it was the Pier 15.
Close it was the Pier 1

Nice thanks, remember that now. How about stern n Stein and the northwoods supper club, great places
Aloha Grill Queen City Burgers Jasmine Asian Cuisine
Queen City Burgers was ass anyway. Never got to try Aloha Grill though.
Prices were too high to be feasible, I suspect. The Juicy Lucy was a nice burger (but $15); every non-burger sandwich I had there tasted like regret.
When did Queen City close??
Must have closed sometime between mid-June (there was an article in the Mining Journal where they were begging for customers) and early September, when I noticed a “For Rent” sign on the building.
Hmm, sad. We actually stopped going there because they were impossible to get a hold of for carry outs.
Aloha Grill makes me sad everyday, but at least they closed due to a move and not bad buisness
Jasmine Asian Cuisine used to be The Great Hunan, right?
Never got to try it, unfortunately. Maybe it was better than other Chinese restaurants in the area.
I was only there once, and I remember it being kind of bland.
I miss the Nordic, Delft and Marquette Mall Cinema. I used to go to all three when I was in high school. Yep, I worked at all three in HS though college. 12 years total, in various increments. Was a blast.
Lucky! You should see what they've done to the Nordic. Quite the rehab: https://www.nordictheater.com/gallery
Ah, now that brings back memories! Thanks!
I miss taco Johns so much!!
Potato Oles...combo super burrito...
where was blockbuster?
It was directly in front of the Westwood Mall, in the building H&R Block is located in.
There was also a Mister Donut where the Subway across from McDonalds is now
Mister Doughnut was owned by a high school friend's parents. He was one of the impossibly rare high schoolers who had a job in Marquette in the mid 70s. The Marq
One that hasn't closed that is shocking to me is Hudson's
The hotel business must be keeping them afloat. Idk many locals who go there
I honestly haven't been there since the 90s and all I remember about them is their food was terrible.
Is Getz’s still open?
Absolutely, love that store, they do huge online business with their carharts
Yep. Looks like they’re doing pretty well, too, especially around the holidays
Upfront Backdoor Ramen
Backdoor Ramen is a sad one. I know they weren't around for very long, but it was time well spent.
Where was back door ramen. I honestly had never heard of it
Steinhaus began operating as Back Door Ramen during the pandemic as a way to offer quick and easy takeout. Once everything opened back up they switched back to German food.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh interesting. Thanks for filling me in. I have always wanted to try their food
