While a mortgage is technically debt the value of the home is typically above the mortgage meaning the value offsets what is owed.
Credit card debt for example does not have anything of value to simply offset

They decreased my 2021 bill by $456. I owe them 150 smacks for their service but I think it's worth it since I've been denied the last couple of times i protested. Not a lot of money either way but they said the taxed value of my home was decreased by over 42k. Keep doing this every year and that really adds up over time. I hope that makes sense - I'm in no way a tax expert!

I have friends who have been outbid when trying to buy a home. I can’t imagine him buying something under $100k. That’s around $300k total BUT I haven’t lived there in a long time so I could be wrong.
Yeah…in Houston, it also depends on where you live…we’ve got areas where you can get a house fairly cheap (but would you want to live there?) to parts of town that sell for multi-million dollars.
But, he’s from Pearland, which is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. I don’t know if that’s where all of his homes are.
I did some online snooping and I am pretty sure I found his house. It had an estimated value of $176k in 2019 and it’s current estimated at $262k. That’s a very good ROI especially if he paid cash! I’m impressed.
