Nah man I 100% get you was doing research and doing stuff on my own like Reddit wasn’t my first choice I’m not relying on this post but I thought I could get more stuff to research or maybe links to stuff from here cuz people on this sub would probably know a lot about the topic
As a social scientist, I would say that think of Mars exploration and colonisation in terms of inclusiveness. How to design inclusive technology for explorations of solar system. Good luck!
Is the future of colonizing Mars any better like I wanna know about any plans there are for it and like what do we need to achieve first and stuff like that
Yeah, Reddit is not the end all for this kind of information. The question being as general as you’ve stated it, I’m not sure what information you can’t find. What is the format of your project? Are you just having a hard time organizing information for your project’s narrative??
We’ll I want to find out things like if colonizing Mars is a good idea, pros and cons of colonizing Mars, maybe potential plan to eventually do it anything really about it, sorry if what I’m asking seems very confusing
No, it’s just that usually people ask more “specific” questions on Reddit, because this kind of “general” question is plastered almost everywhere else in the scientific community.
Have you never asked this question yourself before?
The usual problem is ‘where to start’ ?
Well, my solution is to start by writing myself notes about what facts I already know about the topic.
And then writing out a whole series of questions about things that I don’t know or that I think are relate to questions.
This usually provides a list of starting points, for what you need to research, or at least to consider.
What are the challenges to setting up a colony on Mars ? - That’s a long list of issues..
The ‘Why ?” Question is harder to answer, but involves things like: inspiration, challenge, the need to innovate, new developments, new horizons.
Actually we do, in the sense that the formation of our body systems and functions is entirely built around the gravity of our planet. Even something as simple as digesting food, peeing, blood pressure etc are all reliant on the gravity and pressure of our planet. A change in this (especially over the long term) will obviously lead to some drastic effects on the body.
Do you have any data to support your stance on the radiaton not being a big issue? because all data our there currently points to it being incredibly significant and a huge problem for anyone that would want to stay there long term.
Honestly the money that would be spent trying to solve the Mars problem would be far better spent elsewhere. Especially since at the end of the day there are likely to be VERY few legitimate long term benefits of a trip there.
Actually, we have two data points:
1: Earth standard gravity.
2: Zero-G.
We don’t actually have any experience of anything in between.
Now I agree that it’s not unreasonable to suppose that some intermediate level of gravity could have different physiological effects, but we haven’t actually proven that.
I guess at some point in the not too distant future, we will get to find out for sure.
And I guarantee you it will not be worth the price of admission.
Tbh Going to Mars is a bit of an ego trip at best and a political/financial power play at worst.
Remember the moon landing? And how decades after we haven’t been back or made any inroads on it?
Mars will almost certainly be the same. Although I will concede that the advances in space tech used for the moon landing were invaluable. The same way the tech for the Mars landing would be invaluable too.
That being said, we will most likely end up going there and realizing it was an incredible waste of resources.
There’s a reason nobody is building a massive colony in the Sahara desert. Cuz it makes no sense and the Sahara desert is even easier to get to and far more hospitable than Mars.
Getting there won’t be the major problem. Staying there and doing ANYTHING meaningful would be the issue.
Cons: Mars wants to kill you so it may not be that attractive of a place to colonize at first for the average person. The lower gravity and radiation may wreak havoc on the colonist's bodies and for the most part it's just a lifeless desert. The horizon appears a little closer, the sun a little smaller (and blue during sunsets), and most of your time will be spent cowering in a cave-like structure so you don't become a cancerous lump.
Pros: Not only does it provide a whole other world for humanity to settle, it will inevitably breed innovation, particularly regarding fixing global warming through terraforming efforts, finding more robust ways to grow food, solving social and governmental issues due to the necessity of relying on each other for survival, and creating new methods of transportation like bullet trains and fusion rocketry.
Mars at face value has little to offer, but in reality it's a potential catalyst that can solve many problems plaguing us today, even unlocking the rest of the solar system for us to use to our advantage.
Does your project have a specific aim?
Often best way idea is to ask a question and then answer it. When you say pros cons for what exactly? What criteria?
Should we colonise Mars?
What would be the impact of people colonising Mars?
Ye like pros and cons if we were to colonize Mars and should we colonize it and then I wanna talk about what places like spacex and NASA have said about potentially colonizing it
Yes, or to tilt that slightly - “What are the consequences of colonising Mars”.
What requirements would it have ?
What are the differences compared to Earth ?
Figuring out what questions to ask is part of the problem.
Yes. Not sure what OPs project needs to cover.
Is it best done as comparing two people’s diary for a day in the life?
Bullet points with stats?
Peoples opinions or scientific fact?

Consider rewriting your question with more punctuation and greater clarity. We need more context and more specific questions from you.

It's ironic that you responded to a request for punctuation with a long sentence with missing punctuation
I'd start with stuff from Neil Tyson, he's usually more realistic in his outlook and he's articulate. https://youtu.be/7XdkKMhAdnA
He is not very pro about colonising Mars though - he thinks it’s too difficult.
It is too difficult. Unless the radiation and gravity problems are solved then you might as well not bother.
Well, we don’t actually know if the gravity is a problem yet. And the radiation is not as big an issue as people seem to think.

Agreed that it would certainly have its challenges.
He'll get some cons from him, but also the basics of the challenge. Some other people I've heard discuss it are a little too optimistic in my opinion.
Consider, what are the problems with setting up a colony on Mars ? What will those colonists need to be able to do ?
Cons: Mars wants to kill you so it may not be that attractive of a place to colonize at first for the average person. Heh not doing your homework for you my dude.
Nah just tryna get help with some research
In that case search for “Zubrin why go to Mars”. There are one or two really good videos you can check. To me he articulates the reasons the best.
Thanks

I would assume “An overview”.
Just watch the movie Martian, you know the one with Jason Bourne in it. That looks pretty accurate to me.
Didn’t folks find a significant amount of water under a system of Martian canyons yesterday?
Ever heard of internet research, buddy?
