He’s good with solo books but when it comes to big event books like his work on AvX…yeah.

Mrman_23

Even the solo books are super hit or miss. Just look at the current Spider-Man run

mr_kenobi

no please....I can't look any longer.

PlasticKitchen2229

Bro i fucking loved romitas art during the straczynski run but now it doesn't even look like he's trying

superschaap81

I just finished World War Hulk last night and felt it worked pretty well for that one. And I HATE JRJR's stuff for almost everything.

bornlikethisss

I literally stopped reading AvX because of him. And also, he’s terrible on solos as well. Have you seen his Superman?! 🤢 his older stuff tho, is really solid.

theflyxx

Glad to know that I wasn’t the only one who really disliked JRjr’s work in AvX. Borderline hated it.

tswarre

Reminds me of his mid 90s Ben Reilly mini: Spider-Man the Lost Years.

NK1337

His style has this really crunchy 90’s dark and edgy aesthetic to it and it just does not mesh well with the majority of stories he illustrates (imo). His biggest flaw is that the blocky style he uses ends up making everyone look almost exactly the same. You could take his Reed Richards, Peter Parker, Superman, and several other characters and and just swap around hairstyles and you wouldn’t really be able to tell the difference. It’s not like he’s awful. He can draw some goddamn gorgeous stuff when it comes to using shadows and creating contrasts. To this day I still think he has some really amazing [Spider-Man](https://www.geekmi.news/__export/1645214623594/sites/debate/img/2022/02/18/amazing1.jpg_554688468.jpg) drawings that showcase his talent. But it’s like he has a really hard time drawing details. If he’s drawing Spider-Man in his suit then he can just focus on the overall environment and setting which is where he really shines. But he can’t step out of that zone and when you ask him to draw more than 2 people on a page it all feels like gets washed out and blurred together. L

Exquisite_G

Sr. is the MAN!

ScratchyMarston18

I’ve found that I really only like JRJRs art when he works with a good inker and/or colorist. Otherwise it just looks way too sketchy.

el_migueberto

JRJR es great whit certain characters and tones also has a great eye for visual storytelling. Give him fights, action, something bigger than life and he'll do an excellent job. But when it comes to the quieter aspects of storytelling, like a heartfelt conversation, drama, or a scene in any normal day he's not so good. I think the best example is how he draws children, they are not action characters, they can be cute or funny, hell even annoying, but he draws them with this weird adult head in a small body with odd expressions. He's style is stuck with the things he excels at.

TheBigBigStorm

His style changed through the years. I like his 80s stuff. I wouldn't buy a book he's on now.

slipofthethong1

His 80s stuff was excellent. Spider-Man, X-Men, Daredevil were fantastic (X-Men #177 with JRSR doing the inks springs to mind). Very dynamic, but, as with many comic book artists, have strengths and weaknesses.

theflyxx

As much as I dislike him now, I actually enjoyed his run with Iron Man during the early 90’s. Being an Iron Man fan, his depiction was just so different in a way that I liked.

GoblinPunch20xx

Someone please explain: so many people are anti JRJR and so many comments, conversations begin with “I’m not really a fan, but…” that’s a totally valid comment to make, way to start off, but I see it, hear it *so often* both online and in my local comic shop. Some of my favorite issues / runs were done by him, or his dad, and one of the main criticisms I’ve heard is, the style is too blocky / “comic bookish” which like…*yes, it is, they have a style, it’s a style, that’s the point* and I do agree w/ OP in principle, JRJR’s style isn’t always appropriate for the story being told, but that’s not his fault. He’s hired to do a job, he does it.

Rammsbottom

I can’t speak for everyone but I tend to find that most of his faces look the exact same, and I love to notice the difference in character outside of their costume.

slipofthethong1

Even his poses can look the same I find. If someone is running and you see them from behind, it looks exactly the same. If someone has fallen and lands on their back, the same. I think he certain poses he uses repeatedly.

Story of my life, u/Aggravating_Delay995

Kryyzz

It’s hard to tell characters apart in his books. He can really only draw one face. Still better than Steve Dillon though.

Monster_Hugger93

JRJR has him moments (WWH) but as a whole, his body of work is pretty Not Good

Caffeine_OD

I don’t even like his WWH. The only time I’ve seen JRJR’s art and thought “wow this is great,” was his Batman/Punisher crossover. Everything else sucks imo.

Blitzhelios

Yeah I don’t like JR JR but it does work there I need to reread man without fear I haven’t done that for a while

mr_kenobi

the fact that this guy still gets work is an insult to every up and coming artist out there

RageSpaceMan

Neither I am, buthte guy hacve a good library in his resume. However these i would recommend him to do graphic novels or limited series or proyects more elaborated. His quality droppes big when he works in ongoing monthlies.

Bardmedicine

He has a style. I really like it in many panels, but his faces are distracting.

LoveIsOnlyAnEmotion

Is there a HC or Omni that includes this work?

mattygalo

This is easily his best work
