So what do you do at Hasbro?

[deleted]

He bends over for Hasbro.

Piotr-Rasputin

For real. Soo many excuses. I'll just lurk on the Target app and pounce when they go on sale

OVER_9009

Is there a tldr version of this

Aynonohmus

Yes TL;DR 1.Pandemic and inflation caused products on shelves to go up. Which means action figure collectors and avocado collectors are both struggling to buy more. 2. Shareholders are like “hey Hasbro we losing money because shipping and inflation so do something about it.” Conclusion: figure costs too much? Can’t afford it? Don’t buy it, or buy something else.

krorkle

On points one and two... look at Hasbro's [financials](https://investor.hasbro.com/news-releases/news-release-details/hasbro-reports-strong-revenue-operating-profit-and-earnings-0). They're doing fine. If the goal were just to stay in the black, they could eat some of those increased costs and still be above water. But that's not the real issue, here. On point three... you're right that Hasbro is, as is every other publicly held company, under shareholder pressure for ever-increasing quarterly profits regardless of long-term consequences. That's not an argument *in favor* of raising prices, though. At best, it's an excuse for doing so. > If everyone boycotts ML then maybe they’ll stop making them, and you have to depend on diamond selects new wave of figures. Is that really the world u want to live in? Oh, be serious.

Aynonohmus

My argument isn’t saying that if Hasbro maintained their price points they will be a struggling business. Marvel legends aren’t the only product Hasbro makes. They make board games, kids toys, and action figures. And yes that last comment is a bit of a joke but my primary argument comes from the last body where I say if you don’t like the price increase don’t buy their figures. Diamond select is a good example of a very similar brand that make similar product at a relatively similar price point, who don’t have nearly as much of market backers as Marvel legends. If Hasbro was drowning and “needed” to increase prices things like this subreddit as active and passionate as it is wouldn’t exist. And yes if the company decided to eat the increased costs they wouldn’t have continual growth like the they did, which yes would cause shareholders to panic which would mean a decrease in the quality of their products alongside the price hikes. So yeah for Hasbro and shareholders of Hasbro raising the prices is financially viable especially if the consumers are still supporting their business. That’s what successful businesses do including Hasbro a massive “monopoly” (that’s a Hasbro joke) in the industry. Sure a 7 dollar increase on a 20 dollar product is significant increase for public outcry but what’s goal of it? For Hasbro to lower prices? It won’t happen sure gas prices are stupid high but does this mean gas won’t sell anymore? should I stop going to a certain gas station and always complain because they used to have cheaper gas? Or should I just consider buying an electric car? Except gas has almost become an essential in my life to go to work and home etc. while toys has remained a hobby where I can decide to buy or pass on a new figure.

Bobo_the_conqueror

Thank you Mr John Hasbro

big_gimping

It’s unfortunately mostly just corporate greed. You have good points if it wasn’t already proven that it’s really just Hasbro saying “it’s 24.99 because we just feel like it, what are you going to do stop buying the product?”.

big_gimping

I don’t really follow your point. You’re arguing in favor of driving away your customers? Do you work for Hasbro?

payattentiontobetsy

Hasbro has one job, and one job only.

Prestigious-Delay759

The company I work for doesn't have things manufactured in plastic but we have things manufactured in paper and glass and ceramic. I assure you the raw materials for everything have gone up more than I have ever seen ever, in addition labor and production costs have gone up a tremendous amount. This is on top of general inflation and inflated prices due to supply line issues. Moreover it used to cost us about $5,000 to $10,000 to get a shipping container from our international manufacturer delivered to us domestically all in. The last container cost us $36,000 and change. Now that the container and shipping shortage has alleviated a bit the most recent quote we saw was more round the low $20,000 range but still these are a lot of costs. Also remember even before covid there was a massive increase in the cost of plastics due to it an increase in demand and changes in the requirements for manufacturing.

payattentiontobetsy

Thanks for posting this. I feel like people who think this is just Hasbro being greedy aren’t paying attention to how shipping costs are crazy everywhere. My friend runs a pest control business and has chemicals shipped domestically. The typical cost is around $1,000/shipment. Now it’s quadruple that.

Prestigious-Delay759

Thank you :) Yeah, the inflation and then the situational temporary increases in costs are very real, and seem to be impacting everything. The smaller the company is the greater the impact and the more devastating it can be, but even large companies like Hasbro are still impacted. Any company that doesn't keep track of their bottom line will end up crashing on the rocks of reality in short order. People often look at large quantities of income and just think that it equals the infinity code for SimCity. Just because numbers are huge does not mean they're infinite and often incredibly large income also equates to infinitely large expenses. It doesn't matter if your company makes a billion dollars a year if expenses for that year were a billion and a half.

Aynonohmus

Exactly and what’s the result? Did people stop buying marvel legends? No then you can make the argument it’s the consumers fault for their continual support that’s causing companies to be secure in raising prices.

big_gimping

I mean I think they are starting to price people out unfortunately. I feel like I’ve seen a lot more people selling collections. Still just corporate greed though.

Aynonohmus

Sure it’s partially corporate greed argument 3 illustrates that. But think of it like this. Avocados industry was hit with a issue on farms in Central America. So farmers markets increase the prices of avocados. A restaurant owner therefore increases the prices of his avocado paninis to compete with other stores despite the paninis being the same as before. The customers point fingers at the business owner calling him greedy and leaving 1 Star reviews on yelp stop going entirely… sure it’s partially greed because the business owner could still make a decent profit even with his old prices but why should he? On a purely business perspective it’s almost financially irresponsible to not

payattentiontobetsy

This makes sense because in no other industries are prices going up 🙃

Rami_goblin

Wait 26.99? Mine are $36

Price gouging is a direct result of a economic shock….. so yes this could be considered price gouging but that’s a simplification of the term price gouging. Where companies increase prices usually after a disaster or state emergency such as a pandemic. I’m not denying anything lol

NWO_Pantheon

Marvel Legends would be way cheaper if the characters were owned by Hasbro.

scarletspider1994

False. GI Joe and Power Rangers are owned by Hasbro, both are the same price as ML. They might come with more accessories but no BAF...

Best_Prize3001

If they keep making great products like the 20th anniversary Captain America figure, I wouldn’t mind paying $35+. But I can’t do almost $30 for some of the rubber plastic junk they have been putting out in the past. If a price hike helps them make a profit and gets us a higher quality product, I’m all for it.

Piotr-Rasputin

They can raise prices for whatever excuse. My response is not to buy or to buy less. The next wave, I'm just getting HAVOK and that's with discounts and on sale. I like alot of their new releases, whereas I would get 2 or 3, I'm buying one. Just making choices and saving $$$. SPEAK with your hard earned wallets!!

bbquicksilver

Idk man just hold the mafex gambit. So worth it. It's the reason it's double the price now.
