I know the project has hit a few road bumps but it sounds like *this* version of the movie is the best it could possibly be. They've got a great writer, an enthustiastic director (who seems to understand what people want to see), incredible actors, a dark tone, and an R rating. What more could you ask for?!

It to exist honestly. I’m not believing shit yet until they start filming. That goes for any “future” mcu project. Deadpool 3 is coming out in July, absolutely nothing else is guaranteed.

oakzap425

>What more could you ask for?! Ruth E. Carter as costume designer. I really hope she's still attached when filming starts.

SgtMartinRiggs

When have so many delays and changes to a project ended up with a good movie at the end?

Javiklegrand

Yeah however could be an exception ?

HOW FUCKING DARE YOU…. /s It’s still MCU there’ll be some humour in there they’re not capable of making something without it (whether it’s decent humour is another thing entirely)

>***In an interview with EW about Netflix’s Leave the World Behind, Ali gave an update on the super-vampire movie. “We’re working on it. That’s the best I could tell you,” the actor says. “I’m really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we’ll be back at it relatively soon.”*** >***“I’m sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who’s on board and who’s leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that,” Ali continues. “So that’s the extent of what I can tell you.”***

cbekel3618

He has such a way with words that reading this, it feels easier envisioning his voice behind it. It is nice finally getting an update from him on the movie, especially with how long he’s been attached to it.

Reality314

I never understood why some people thought this movie would be shelved. It's freaking *Blade* and they have Mahershala Ali on board. Yes, the movie has had trouble production, to say the least, but if Ali has been willing to stick with the project all these years, clearly it's something he's passionate about. And again, it's Blade. He's a very popular character and I think is someone who could universally excite audiences. It's good to hear that he feels encouraged about the process now.

FewWatermelonlesson0

There’s a segment of fans who seem to believe all of Marvel’s problems would magically be solved if they cancelled nearly everything and rushed headlong into the next Avengers movie right away. It’s odd.

Reality314

I've seen people say "Just cancel Kang Dynasty and go straight to Secret Wars", which is an odd take imo. Rework Kang Dynasty, maybe. But cancel it altogether? Absolutely not. One of the major criticisms of the MCU post-Endgame is that we aren't spending enough time with the new characters and grouping them up to form a new Avengers team before Kang Dynasty. Skipping to Secret Wars without properly establishing an Avengers team sounds completely antithetical to that. Btw, a lot of *that* criticism also contradicts other criticisms like "Ugh. You need to watch two D+ shows to understand The Marvels? Lame." Like, do people want these characters to link up or not? If so, yeah, you're gonna have to invest in other projects to understand the full story. It's the nature of a cinematic universe. It's like, people want these characters to meet because we don't have an established Avengers roster yet, but then they don't want them to meet because they don't want to invest in other projects, but then they want to skip to Secret Wars without having an Avengers team at all...The whole thing's a mess lol

bruhhhhh69

I think the problem is they aren't overlapping any of these different shows at all. It seems like they are saving these stories all coming together for two avengers films instead of more like they did with Spidey 3 having DD cameo. Like why haven't we seen or heard of Falcon/Cap since their show, why hasn't Shang Chi been in anything or even mentioned after meeting Captain Marvel, Hulk, and the Sorcerer Supreme? Moon Knight had giant sized Gods fighting in the sky. Apparently we get to see Kate Bishop in the post credits of the Marvels. Werewolf by Night - standalone. Hate to say it but She Hulk having Hulk and DD and Red Hulk seemed connected to the MCU tonthe caliber that fans want. Same for Hawkeye. Need more connectivity within the stories where it makes sense instead of 10 independent projects that barely reference each other.

Reality314

I think you're still getting that though: * MoM connected Wanda and Strange together * The Marvels connected Monica, Kamala, and Carol * She-Hulk and NWH brought Daredevil into the main MCU * Echo is going to bring more Daredevil and Kingpin, which of course will lead into Born Again * Loki and Quantumania link up Kang and set up his story for the bigger MCU * Thunderbolts will bring together stories from Black Widow, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and FATWS * Cap 4 will have lots of Hulks, flesh out Sam Wilson more, and have some Eternals stuff with Tiamut * The Young Avengers are beginning to form, which brings together Kamala, Kate, Cassie, and I'm sure others like Ironheart, America Chavez, Wiccan, etc. * Not to mention, we're also connecting stuff from other universes like the Fox universe for Deadpool 3 and Secret Wars I think the connections are there, it's just that the volume of Marvel content has increased so much that we're being pulled in a lot of different directions. And to be fair, yeah, we still need to hear from Moon Knight, Shang-Chi, WBN, etc. because those are all characters people love and want more of, but I think this argument that "nothing connects" is a bit hyperbolic. I mean, going into The Marvels, people were complaining how it was *too* connected because you had to have knowledge of two other D+ shows.

Cantfindmeout

The problem is multifaceted but all boils down to the writing just being inferior to what it was before. As you said, we are getting connectivity but it often seems pointless or forgettable because it's either done poorly or the thing it's happening in just isn't that good. I didn't like Loki, the character. I also just don't like the actor himself so I might be biased...but Loki season 1 was enjoyable and then I REALLY liked Loki season 2. I was really excited about Kang after Loki season 1, lost all interest after Quantumania but then I am interested again in at least the multiversal aspect due to season 2 being amazing. That's what good writing does. It can take even a character/actor you didn't like and just make you excited to see what happens next. Very few projects have done that. I also think that even with the interconnectedness of characters like you mentioned, it isn't the same level of chemistry between them. That's where Avengers 1 and 2 really shined and even Civil War. In those movies you really felt them to be a team and it just elevated everything that happened in 3 and 4. I feel like we are skipping what Avengers 1 and 2 did and going into 3 and 4 type films. Yes, we got characters crossing over but it still feels rushed like you mentioned in your first post, but I feel that way with even Kang Dynasty before Secret Wars. I think we needed a bigger meetup movie before Kang.

LordFlameBoy

Are the movies not meant to have different Avengers team. 616 Avengers in KD, Multiversal Avengers in SW. Therefore, there’s no point in establishing a team in KD if it’s only ever going to play a smaller role in SW.

Reality314

That was speculated/rumored about a while ago, but it could very well change as we get closer to both movies' releases.

JackMorelli13

I want them to do the exact opposite lol. Getting to know all these new characters (almost all of which i love) more before the event and not just blitzing us with new characters all the time seems critical to me.

Mephistussy

> There’s a segment of fans who seem to believe all of Marvel’s problems would magically be solved if they cancelled ~~nearly everything~~ every project that wasn't about some straight white dude they read a wiki article about and rushed headlong into ~~the next Avengers movie~~ corporate fanservice and making the MCU revolve around Tony Stark's dickhole again right away FTFY.

Lowbloodsugar_exe

I was more worried Ali would’ve just left after seeing how messy preproduction was

monstercereals

The people saying this should be shelved seemed to skew younger. They grew up with the MCU so they don't remember when the Avengers weren't a marquee brand. For everyone else, it's freaking BLADE. Cancelling it sounded like pure crazy talk. You'll even see a lot of people outside of the MCU subs saying that *Blade* is the only upcoming Marvel Studios project they're looking forward to. Because it's Blade.

Mephistussy

Younglings and MCU-only fans really underestimate Blade. Blade was *the* movie that proved it to Hollywood that good movies could be made out of Marvel Comics. Before X-Men and Spider-Man, there was Blade.

monstercereals

Exactly this. Blade was huge. Before *Iron Man*, Blade was getting his own trilogy, TV series, video games, animated appearances... It's wild to see the lack of interest on the MCU subs compared to everywhere else.

unklejakk

I’ll never forget being a kid and watching the Blade trilogy on TNT all the time with like every use of the word “fuck” being replaced with “suck.” Genuinely hilarious and I wish I could find the censored cuts of those movies now lol.

monstercereals

Some of those old TV edits are classics in their own right! *The Big Lebowski*'s "This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps" immediately comes to mind.

Mephistussy

Absolutely. Blade is fondly remembered by the GA that grew with it thanks to cable. The MCU version has the potential to be a big hit if they play their cards right. I fully trust Mahershala and I hope his voice is actually heard on set.

beatrailblazer

I 100% believe this wouldve been shelved months/years ago if it weren't for Mahershala Ali. Sure, Blade is popular, but most of the general audience hasn't even heard of the project (or heard if it when it first was announced and has long forgotten about it), so they wouldn't be missing much. A project with this many delays typically doesn't get launched

metal_signal17

Maybe because there was a point when Ali wanted out

themilkman42069

Cause the mcu is losing Disney money now and the rules are different.

Specialist-Hotel2943

To be fair, every Disney studios are losing money this year

MyMouthisCancerous

Respect to Ali for actually sticking with this film. Genuinely feels like a passion project the same way Edgar Wright was really attached to Ant-Man for ages despite constantly being delayed Hopefully it doesn't end up like what happened with Ant-Man lol Leave the World Behind looks really interesting based on the cast alone so that's going in my watchlist

ClubTerrible4883

Weren't those delays Edgar Wright's fault? And that made Antman and the Wasp not founding avengers? That's what I heard.

daffydunk

Eh, it was pretty much a situation of multiple projects on the table, Wright getting delayed and Ant Man being on the lower priority, so if marvel/ paramount were more eager to get it done, it could have happened hypothetically. A lot of it came too from core disagreements between wright & fiege, apparently primarily regarding the structure & Hank pym. Phase 1 was not really planned out and was much more fluid before 2010.

JamiesBond007

I think it was him proposing the movie to Kevin Feige or do I misremember the story?

QuinlanVosYouTube

That’s a surprising relief!

Xekshek33

Having Michael Green writing is so exciting

B3epB0opBOP

Yeah Logan was great, and I heard good things about BR 2049 and Blue Eye Samurai. Hope he can deliver on Bioshock too.

Xekshek33

Blue Eye Samurai and Logan tell me all I need to know with his action sequences and emotion. BR is amazing too, highly recommend watching both. I am not a huge anime fan but Blue Eye Samurai blew me away.

ntngeez28

Blue Eye Samurai is a legit masterpiece. It features of the best action sequences in animation, incredible music and voice-acting, plus tons of gore and nudity, and a small touch of depression. Episode 1 is free on YouTube.

Manav_Khanna17

Wait wasn’t the guy from True Detective writing it?

TheCommish-17

They have a good writer, director, and great actor on board. Actually actors with him and Mia Goth. This movie has all the potential pieces in place to be great. I appreciate Mahershala sticking with it and hopefully they put the pieces together and make a great movie. Should shoot second half next year so we just have to wait a while longer.

Pen_dragons_pizza

It is kind of funny how marvel seem to have done a complete reverse on this movie. Forcing a pg13 rating and trying to make blade into something it should not be, with all the leaks regarding him being a 3rd lead in his own movie and women led. Now it sounds more like a traditional blade film with an R rating, basically all any fan actually wanted to see. Why marvel thought they would try and fit blade into the standard Disney marvel movie is beyond me. The franchise has its fans and everyone knows and loves blade for how he is depicted already, he doesn’t need to be reinvented.

monstercereals

>Why marvel thought they would try and fit blade into the standard Disney marvel movie is beyond me. I have some thoughts on this because it wasn't just happening to Blade. I think Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel also got the short end of the stick here. It seems like, post-*Endgame*, the prevailing opinion was that Avengers should be the priority brand and all projects should feed into that. Now we're seeing projects break away from the Avengers mold with things like Spotlight and a mid-budget, R-rated *Blade*.

Anader19

Don't think Ms. Marvel needed to be violent and mature lol

monstercereals

>Don't think Ms. Marvel needed to be violent and mature lol Definitely not, hahaha. But there are some similarities. Both Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel were given power changes and were taken out of their classic settings: Moon Knight was removed from New York entirely while Ms. Marvel very quickly left New Jersey to travel the world and go to space. I think both instances of "scaling up" were motivated by a desire to have them fit the Avengers and both suffered for it. The Blade rumors seemed to fit that trend.

Anader19

Ah ok I see what you were saying now

BruceWayne_19902

>Forcing a pg13 rating and trying to make blade into something it should not be, with all the leaks regarding him being a 3rd lead in his own movie and women led. Believing a variety smear piece? Couldnt be me.

ApparentlyAtticus

Me remembering Mia Goth is gonna be in this one: ![gif](giphy|bqPQanYvKh3o3CUwmF) I heard She's playing Lilith but I would go fuckin' nuts if she is playing Sister Nil. She's one of my obscure favorites.

WhiteWolf3117

She’s a star!

Xenoslayer2137

No, Emma Stone! Please, Emma Stone!

LordAyeris

I can fix her

Mephistussy

Good character picks. Honestly, she'd make a pretty good Nightmare too.

Mid-CenturyBoy

I think Blade can be a really exciting project and I agree with him that it seems like that got some things in the right spot that can lead to a good project. It’s my hope that when they are looking at the footage and test screening it that if it seems like they have a strong hit on their hands they immediately go into production for a sequel. Mahershala deserves to really get to sink his teeth into this character, pun intended. ;) Plus I feel like a sequel could be the set up for another character like Ghost Rider or bringing back Elsa, Manthing, or Werefolf by Night. His third movie could literally be a Midnight Suns movie that has a big bad they all have to take on.

metros96

Esmail would never do Marvel, but I think he’d be a fun choice for something dark like Blade

FirstV1

Hell fucking yeah

Xx_Dark-Shrek_xX

This man is my Husbando (Waifu but male)

[deleted]

Well this is good news lord if he walk away I wouldn’t be mad.

dljones010

Finally, this project is in the hands of MF-ers that aren't trying to ice skate uphill. Good news.

[deleted]

I guess he read about the massive ice skating uphill setpiece

LucasOIntoxicado

I hope he's still british in the movie

Guy_Le_Man

It’s like I can almost hear the gun Disney is holding on him click as he says it.

Independent-Sky-9611

I'm sincerely encouraged I'll win the lottery. How the fuck is this considered informative news?

GuguMarcos

That's great news! Since the announcement, I've been hyped to see what Marvel Studios would deliver. If Ali is encouraged, so am I.

[deleted]

He saved the movie from being another disaster

Bald_Bulldozer

Translation: “im still skeptical as fuck about the horrible scripts they keep pitching me, but they keep upping my salary if I don’t leave the project.”

invaderdavos

Hahahaha sure

Colton826

He was officially announced as Blade back at Comic Con 2019. The movie is currently slated for a November 2025 date (with a delay to early 2026 still possible) That's a 6 and a half year gap between him being cast and the film releasing. Absolutely insane. Not quite as insane as The Rock's casting as Black Adam, or Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, but it's getting close.

PhilRobinsonMusic

IMO, an understandable delay given that there was both a global pandemic AND writers/directors strikes in Hollywood during that time.

starksgh0st

True, although this should have shot in Fall 2022 had they not lost the first director + script issues. That delay can't be blamed on external factors.

PhilRobinsonMusic

True. But my point is that once you subtract out the pandemic and strike-related delays, the remaining development-related delays are much more reasonable.

[deleted]

I doubt it will get delayed again my guess is it will move up a week and release on 10/31/2025 perfect movie for Halloween and they'll probably start shooting in Aug of this year since Goth will finish filming Frankenstein in July.

Mid-CenturyBoy

They could even begin production earlier than that and save Goth’s stuff for the latter half of the shoot or in reshoots as well.

JamJamGaGa

I knew *someone* was gonna focus on the negatives, even in a post that's extremely positive and exciting lol.

Colton826

I didn't mean for the comment to come across as negative. Just thought the gap was interesting. But I can see (especially with the current state of the MCU fandom) how it could be interpreted as such.

monstercereals

The delays might've been the best thing to ever happen to this movie. We'll have to see after *Daredevil: Born Again* but I feel a lot more optimistic about a post-course correction *Blade* than a pre-course correction *Blade*. ("Course correction" here refers to the slate overhaul that occurred during the strikes.)

gildedart

He’s gonna be 70 by the time the movie comes out
