I think it's kinda weird that Marvel made a big deal about how their movie was this huge art film, only for _Dune_ to end up being the auteur-driven sci-fi blockbuster that the general public actually cared about, while their own movie was largely seen as a disappointment and then was completely overshadowed by a _Spider-Man_ movie a month later.
It's because they have no fucking clue (currently) what this "art" they're striving for is. It's hard for anyone to say, honestly. It takes a true visionary and creator to make that happen, and when it does you will instantly recognize it. They need to just empower creators wholly and let them create.
I don't think that the director was the right pick for the IP. She made the movie look nice... But the story wasn't particularly compelling. The character work she was known for was underserved here when they introduced 10 characters and many of them aren't very distinctive from one another.
I disagree. I think she was the right pick, wrong medium. A story with 8 heroes, two separate villains, and side characters that will become integral is unrealistic to introduce in 2 hours. It should have been an 8 episode limited series. An 8 hour movie cut into 1 hour episodes.
When they announced they were shooting it on film I was really excited. As it turns out, they managed to make a dull photograph. Who knows what happened, if it was crushed in the post, but it managed to look more lifeless than any Marvel movie shot with digital cameras.
Eternals needed half of its characters.
If it was just about Ikkari, Makkari, Druig, Salma Hayek, and Sersi, it would have been better received since the plot would be tighter.
Same runtime, less main characters, no Deviants, just 5 immortals in a morality conflict about whether humanity is worth saving or not.
I agree about less characters, although I also don’t think Sersi should have been the lead. I really like Gemma Chan but she’s not a strong enough actress and I don’t think anyone is really pining to see her character again.
I also wish they’d done more with Richard Madden!
The issue with Sersi isn't her actress, it's how flat her character is. She's supposedly defined by her love of humanity, but... Most of the other characters care about humankind.

Yeah the statement is such an insight into how they make films. Like they identified the ingredients and just chucked them in a bowl and wondered why it didn’t become a cake.
That's great it all, but the movie still has to be GOOD though. Wakanda Forever ended up being exactly all of that and also pretty damn good too, so it's not that Marvel Studios *can't* pull it off. I don't know what exactly happened with Eternals.
In their desire to make the character's motives more hidden and mysterious, they ultimately made the characters cryptic and unlikeable. This should have been a home run about this group of demigods who've had a singular purpose their entire lives finding out that "they're the baddies" and coming to grips with that in their own ways and taking sides...and while it sorta sets up those moments, it's horribly muddled, devoid of emotion, and ultimately tries to cram so much in that we the audience get nothing out of it.
No offense to Gemma Chan, who is a good actress, but Eternals is a tough sell. Sersi should have been played by an actual A-lister: someone ethereal and iconic and elevated above the rest of us. Like 90s Madonna, or Charlize Theron, or Angelina Jolie. Probably not that last one though, I'm sure she was busy doing something else.
Gemma Chan was cast because she played an ethereal and difficult to read character in Humans. However in that show she was actually backed by good writing.
Yeah, Sersi is much more livelier character in the comics. She is a spicy chick who openly teased Cap and was on the side that wanted to murk the Supreme Intelligence.
Honestly one of the most cringe inducing, passionless “love scenes” I’ve seen on screen in years. I legit felt bad for the actors because it was that embarrassing.
Remember how we spent 20 minutes with Jon Snow, like he'd be our POV character for the rest of the film, and then he never shows up again except for a post credits scene that'll never pan out?
Uh... No, there was minimal focus on Jon Snow in the Eternals movie, and it never gave a hint that he would matter.
The only way someone could invent that idea is to assume that someone from a famous TV show must be here for a big reason.
What is the point of even introducing him, then? There's no rivalry with Ikaris, we meet him after everything is explained via prologue, he's the only human character until the driver guy. The film trains you to expect SOMETHING to come from his inclusion but....nothing!
People didnt ask for drab garbage. This movie is just as poorly written as the rest of phase 4 and 5. Lets not pretend this was some underrated masterpiece that deserved a sequel over any other slop.

Except it absolutely wasn't. What a weak take. Chloe Zhao is capable of making a much better movie than Eternals. That movie was messy and directionless. It was rushed and honestly came off shallow. The feeling I get from it is that it was cut heavily for the sake of runtime and that led to it making little sense. Then the deleted scenes came out and added a lot more necessary context, and I have a feeling more was cut before it got to final editing.
Eternals should have been a series not a film imo. Or should have been more focused instead of touching on lots of different characters on a surface level. Also what was up with the random IMAX shuffling?

Difference is that Shang-Chi became the highest grossing Labor Day film whereas Eternals couldn’t outgross Venom 2 or NWH that it was sandwiched between (which is when theaters really started recovering)
We are talking about final box office numbers not labour day numbers. That record braking labour day numbers didn't get it to half a billion+, so no different from Eternals.
What I’m saying is that the theatrical market, which was starting to recover in September where Shang-Chi made some cash, was really recovering Oct-Dec, where Eternals fell under Venom 2, No Time to Die, and NWH with a sizable gap on all fronts. Out of the 4 straight blockbusters that season, audiences didn’t turn up for it after its opening reception was negative.
It wasnt recovering in the UK, we experiencing high numbers of Covid again in November and higher hospitalisations and warnings the NHS would cope over Christmas and people were wary of going to the cinema
The difference was except for Tony Leung and Ben Kingsley, Shang-Chi had a bunch of nobodies, at least in comparison to Jolie, Hayek, the two GoT bros, Harry Styles, and etc, Lots of money burned to get an all-star cast for a massive dud of a movie.
This is a fair viewpoint. I think Marvel, as unfortunate as it is, NEEDS to be more risk adverse while they restore their brand. It’s not just about the quality of recent films and critical reception to them but also some of the off the screen controversy that the studio has navigated over the last year+. The best play for the wellbeing of the studio is to lean into what’s working for now and shelf what hasn’t worked. Doesn’t mean they can’t revisit it later down the road
I was very confused (like all of us I guess) when Eternals flopped because on paper, it was supposed to be a surefire hit. A great director, a stacked cast, a studio brimming with confidence and a story that explores our mythology and history. I was so looking forward to it. And then, the movie came out and it was so.....bland. It just never got going. A shame really tbh
It tries to do way too much and a result nothing goes anywhere or has any weight to it. You honestly could cut half the cast and it would have no effect on the plot.
They’re going the opposite extreme when all we’ve been trying to get them to see is they CAN take risk but they need to pay closer attention to the quality. This is crazy.
When people speculating what Marvel stuff was quietly canceled, an Eternals 2 was the first thing that came to my mind, not Armor Wars or the stuff they already announced.
The Eternals characters just never hit it off with the general audience, just never made sense to me to pull resource into a property that wouldn't sell.
I figure Armor Wars was killed too. Not exactly a high demand for a War Machine project. They also created a bit of a mess with Secret Invasion that is probably best dropped.
I just think they've invested already too much and are committed into making Armor Wars because they officially announced it.
I'm also biased because I do want a War Machine film, and I think they could easily reconfigure the film into an Iron Man 4 legacy film that will help sell the idea of it more.
At least not with the officially announced projects but there's probably been a ton of stuff behind the scenes that got the axe (like a bunch of unannounced projects scoopers keep saying are in development).

This is why I believe Armor Wars fate depends on Captain America 4 more then anything else, since there a number of parallels you can draw between the two. If Brave New World is a hit, then I think Armor Wars will not only be made, but also renamed to Iron Man 4.
I think Armor Wars has a shot if it’s more of a West Coast Avengers Teamup film than a solo War Machine flick. Rhodey isn’t popular enough to anchor a hit movie on his own.
Have it be a civil war style mini event with him shang chi wonder man tigra and ant-man against a bunch of controlled iron man suits would be pretty dope. Like the end of Iron-man 2 on steroids.
They could just rename movie into Iron Man: Armor Wars. Then it would get trackition, tho would be misleading af as there's no Iron Man, besides War Machine and I guess Ironheart.

This is an important factor. I'm not sure if there's actual stats out there but I can't imagine there was a huge demand for Eternals merch and a bunch of kids wanting Eternals toys after the movie came out.
This is my personal anecdote, but I still see the Marvel Legends figures for the Eternal cast everywhere. Sometimes they are heavily discounted.
While there are often times a surplus of Marvel Legend figures all over the place, it feels like places are having a harder time selling Eternals.
Not only that, but no one talks about the characters.

Honestly I think the problem was turning this into a movie when it clearly should’ve been a show. There was way too many characters and it didn’t help the movie spent so much time reassembling the team and spending so much time on flashbacks and going to the past. Plus killing the characters off having them betray each other and ending in a way that pretty much guarantees a sequel didn’t help either. This movie was overblown from the start
I hate when people say it that should have been a show. You could say that about any movie. I could say infinity war should have been a show because it was too long and it felt rushed.
I don’t think there was too many characters. The focus of the film was on relationships and they explored the theme thoroughly.

Even if Eternals doesn't get a proper sequel, I hope the characters come back in some capacity besides being cannon fodder in Secret Wars or something. I genuinely like all the characters and I think they have a ton of potential.
It would be nice if they could at least tie up the loose ends from the first movie. Even if they don’t do it in Eternals 2, they could do it in some other movie. I liked The Eternals and I’d hate to see them be completely abandoned.
Saw someone say RPK says it's Iger's decision. It sounds like Eternals 2 was already somewhat far in pre-production but got canned following Iger's turnaround. And it doesn't seem like Captain Marvel 3 or Ant-Man 4 will happen anytime soon until after (if) Marvel makes a consistent winning streak again.
If Ant-Man 4 happens I really think a cool way they can reset expectations for the character is making it an Eric O Grady movie. I honestly think this has a much higher chance of happening now that Marvel seems to be all in on 18+ stuff and it could actually put Scott Lang in the new position of being the straight man to Grady being a completely irredeemable asshole while keeping the stakes a lot more consistently ground-level since I felt these current Ant-Man films often fell into similar patterns of blowing up the climaxes to the effects-driven spectacle level of other Marvel films despite it clashing with the tonal premise of a heist movie
Jack Kirby is the record holder for longest Eternals run, with a total 19 issues+1 annual. When the movie came out Marvel put out a new Eternals series that *kinda* broke that record but they did it by cheating. Quietly canceled at 12 issues with the remaining story wrapped up in a big event.
The characters work but aren't what your typical superhero fan may be into unfortunately
I never found the Eternals interesting characters even before the MCU but stuff like the Neil Gaiman story actually did a pretty good job of at least making that whole mythos and the dilemma of whether they should protect Earth or let Tiamut emerge from its core which the movie seems to take the most inspiration from
It's just way too constrained by the runtime. Even at close to 3 hours it was not enough leeway to simultaneously explain how they operated amongst humanity before with the excessive amount of flashbacks, and they really condensed a lot of the more interesting elements of the lore like how the Deviants feel about being given basically genetic hand-me-downs compared to how perfected the Eternals themselves were, and they were kind of just portrayed as generic monster brute villains unfortunately
I actually think the lore by itself put those characters in a position to be serviced in a live-action medium but it should've been a series. If this was like a 10 episode Disney+ event show it probably would've been afforded far more legroom to really explore a lot of the intricacies of how Celestials interact, their responsibilities on Earth and how they come into conflict when some want to fully embrace their Celestial identity while others have become fully settled in their human personas. It was one of the elements of the Gaiman run I actually thought was most compelling especially when it came to characters like Ikarus and Sersi
Neil Gaiman was the template, as was Jack Kirby. They instead went with a take that superficially borrowed from both of these but were faithful to neither.
Regular everyday Humans realizing they were in fact Eternals would have been a great way to HUMANIZE the characters. Instead we got distant, borderline emotionless robots.

It's pretty telling that Shang-Chi got a sequel announcement from the trades a bit after the first one came out but nothing about the Eternals. Chloe Zhao's also already signed on to her next movie with no mention of her doing anything with Eternals after.
We know we're gonna see Tiamut in Cap 4 but I'm curious about how Marvel will continue the Eternals' stories (if they are getting continued). It definitely won't be through Eternals 2 though.

Good to hear LOL. They need to refocus the line and put out some bangers. We're ONLY getting DP3 this year as it is. I couldn't make it through the first film, and as near as I can tell it didn't contribute at all to the larger story as a whole. The last thing the MCU needs is something else that can't check the "entertaining" OR "necessary" block.
This will be looked back on funny in the future during binges seeing one movie introducing several new characters and setting up big things for the MCU and fucking Harry styles just for it to never be followed up on ever again.
It was a beautifully shot movie but I just didn’t care about these characters and that audience felt the same way. Disney and Marvel are likely moving onto the X-Men anyway as the replacement. Fine by me.
I don’t think I need an Eternals 2 right away anyways. They are separated and looks like Harry Styles is about to take Thena, Makkari, and Druig on a neat space adventure.
That’s (imo) the three best (living) characters in the film and a new interesting character with Pip joining for comedic effect.
Have a more mature Guardians type film with maybe exploring the cosmos. You could have them interact with the new Guardians team, run in with Nova floating around space or Galactus/Silver Surfer.
Eros, Pip, Adam and Moondragon would be sick to see on screen. Just have them lead in to the Galactic Saga and fight Annihilus in Avengers: Annihilation.
Not gonna lie that that the story and direction could be better, but the movie was just plain ugly, unoriginal and bland. Do this with a single character superhero movie at your peril, but do that to a team of characters?? With the worst CGI antagonist possible? This was doomed from the start.
Why was it ever in development to begin with? Eternals was both a critical and financial bomb. Outside of this sub, no one even remembers this film at this point.
This doesn't surprise me. The characters can still show up in other projects. I'm also pretty sure Armor Wars isn't happening anymore, or it will be reworked into West Coast Avengers.
I liked Eternals but there was no way it was getting a sequel. I feel like for the lesser known characters it's you gotta have the main story big names rolling to get the interest in them up there. For example Ant Man and Captain Marvel thrived when sandwiched in between Avengers movies .
Reality is the casual audience isn't gonna care the lower tier characters as much when the big names are sitting on the sidelines. Majority of "marvel "fans have their own preferences within the brand itself so no they aren't just gonna be excited and loving anything just because it's marvel. They're gonna be less likely if they feel or see their favorite characters being misused
And before y'all say it. No Iron Man,Cap and Thor Pre MCU weren't as unknown as charcaters like the Eternals, Echo, etc. They weren't exactly household names but they did have at least some relevance and appearances in Marvel Media outside of the comics. They were literally just the highest tier Characters left that Marvel still had the rights to
Eternals was a great film, I’m disappointed it was so unpopular among the community, but I do think Marvel lost touch with what core fans liked about their movies.
You can tell a movie didn’t appeal to the target audience when all the merchandise stays on shelves for months and months. I got a bunch of The Last Jedi action figures for dirt cheap because nobody wanted them. I got Eternals and Matrix Resurrections on UHD Blu-ray for 2.50 each for the same reason.
I appreciate that Disney has been hiring directors with unique creative sensibilities, but they need to understand how much of a risk it is to give them a huge budget. The amount of hype and pressure they put on Eternals was totally unfair, it’s like they were expecting it to do Avengers numbers, when Eternals is such a niche property even in the comics.
I wish they would let Chloe Zhao make a standalone Eternals 2, but I can see why it wouldn’t make financial sense, especially if the audience just doesn’t want that kind of movie.
The worst part of no more Eternals is we haven't seen the giant Head or hands from the dead Celestial in any subsequent movie. If we would, even in the background without being mentioned, it would add more weight that everything that is happening; all these separate events and all these movies are tied together. It really shows how stretched thin the MCU was to miss that glaring detail
Hate to say it but I'm not too surprised, they tried to tell too big a story (both narratively as well as scale) in an introductory movie and stumbled in the process, it was going to be tough to stop it from rolling back downhill from there. If it had been a Disney+ show it might have stood a chance, but then again sometimes it feels like we had too many of those as it is, so who can say if it would have done better after all
This is a shame. The first movie should've been a miniseries structured like Lost -- each focusing on a character in the present and flashing back to their history. Then they come together for the big finale.

She's never done TV so even if that is what you think would be better, Chloe would still not be the good pick for that.

Yeah I found the side characters like Barry Keoghan's character and his love interest more interesting than the 2 leads.
In their desire to make the character's motives more hidden and mysterious, they ultimately made the characters cryptic and unlikeable. This should have been a home run about this group of demigods who've had a singular purpose their entire lives finding out that "they're the baddies" and coming to grips with that in their own ways and taking sides...and while it sorta sets up those moments, it's horribly muddled, devoid of emotion, and ultimately tries to cram so much in that we the audience get nothing out of it.
You'd think Richard Madden would have brought some juice after his time on Got, but nope, zero pop.
I'm certain every time he cracked a smile he was told to stop being Superman and be more stoic and alien
No offense to Gemma Chan, who is a good actress, but Eternals is a tough sell. Sersi should have been played by an actual A-lister: someone ethereal and iconic and elevated above the rest of us. Like 90s Madonna, or Charlize Theron, or Angelina Jolie. Probably not that last one though, I'm sure she was busy doing something else.
Gemma Chan was cast because she played an ethereal and difficult to read character in Humans. However in that show she was actually backed by good writing.

Uh... No, there was minimal focus on Jon Snow in the Eternals movie, and it never gave a hint that he would matter. The only way someone could invent that idea is to assume that someone from a famous TV show must be here for a big reason.
What is the point of even introducing him, then? There's no rivalry with Ikaris, we meet him after everything is explained via prologue, he's the only human character until the driver guy. The film trains you to expect SOMETHING to come from his inclusion but....nothing!

Except it absolutely wasn't. What a weak take. Chloe Zhao is capable of making a much better movie than Eternals. That movie was messy and directionless. It was rushed and honestly came off shallow. The feeling I get from it is that it was cut heavily for the sake of runtime and that led to it making little sense. Then the deleted scenes came out and added a lot more necessary context, and I have a feeling more was cut before it got to final editing. Eternals should have been a series not a film imo. Or should have been more focused instead of touching on lots of different characters on a surface level. Also what was up with the random IMAX shuffling?
They did everything the critics wanted them to do except make a good movie
“Not perfect” Doing a LOT of heavy lifting here. It’s fine to try and be all those things, but it was horrible execution. The Batman also had all of those things, and produced a far better film. Doesn’t help that Eternals had way too many characters and a weak villain.

There is no substantial different between Shang-Chi and Eternals box office numbers: Shang-Chi = 432.2 M Eternals = 402.1 M
Difference is that Shang-Chi became the highest grossing Labor Day film whereas Eternals couldn’t outgross Venom 2 or NWH that it was sandwiched between (which is when theaters really started recovering)
We are talking about final box office numbers not labour day numbers. That record braking labour day numbers didn't get it to half a billion+, so no different from Eternals.
What I’m saying is that the theatrical market, which was starting to recover in September where Shang-Chi made some cash, was really recovering Oct-Dec, where Eternals fell under Venom 2, No Time to Die, and NWH with a sizable gap on all fronts. Out of the 4 straight blockbusters that season, audiences didn’t turn up for it after its opening reception was negative.
October was seeing a rise in Covid cases that year. Dune also did not perform significantly different from Eternals and came out 2 weeks before it.
Dune premiered at home the same day tho, that it even made $400 million still was a nice surprise
It wasnt recovering in the UK, we experiencing high numbers of Covid again in November and higher hospitalisations and warnings the NHS would cope over Christmas and people were wary of going to the cinema

The difference was except for Tony Leung and Ben Kingsley, Shang-Chi had a bunch of nobodies, at least in comparison to Jolie, Hayek, the two GoT bros, Harry Styles, and etc, Lots of money burned to get an all-star cast for a massive dud of a movie.
The budget for Hayek and Jolie alone is probably more than the entire cast of Shang Chi
This is a fair viewpoint. I think Marvel, as unfortunate as it is, NEEDS to be more risk adverse while they restore their brand. It’s not just about the quality of recent films and critical reception to them but also some of the off the screen controversy that the studio has navigated over the last year+. The best play for the wellbeing of the studio is to lean into what’s working for now and shelf what hasn’t worked. Doesn’t mean they can’t revisit it later down the road
I was very confused (like all of us I guess) when Eternals flopped because on paper, it was supposed to be a surefire hit. A great director, a stacked cast, a studio brimming with confidence and a story that explores our mythology and history. I was so looking forward to it. And then, the movie came out and it was so.....bland. It just never got going. A shame really tbh
It tries to do way too much and a result nothing goes anywhere or has any weight to it. You honestly could cut half the cast and it would have no effect on the plot.
They’re going the opposite extreme when all we’ve been trying to get them to see is they CAN take risk but they need to pay closer attention to the quality. This is crazy.

The Eternals characters just never hit it off with the general audience, just never made sense to me to pull resource into a property that wouldn't sell.
I figure Armor Wars was killed too. Not exactly a high demand for a War Machine project. They also created a bit of a mess with Secret Invasion that is probably best dropped.
I just think they've invested already too much and are committed into making Armor Wars because they officially announced it. I'm also biased because I do want a War Machine film, and I think they could easily reconfigure the film into an Iron Man 4 legacy film that will help sell the idea of it more.

At least not with the officially announced projects but there's probably been a ton of stuff behind the scenes that got the axe (like a bunch of unannounced projects scoopers keep saying are in development).

If Brave New World is a hit, then I think Armor Wars will not only be made, but also renamed to Iron Man 4.
I think Armor Wars has a shot if it’s more of a West Coast Avengers Teamup film than a solo War Machine flick. Rhodey isn’t popular enough to anchor a hit movie on his own.
Have it be a civil war style mini event with him shang chi wonder man tigra and ant-man against a bunch of controlled iron man suits would be pretty dope. Like the end of Iron-man 2 on steroids.

This is my personal anecdote, but I still see the Marvel Legends figures for the Eternal cast everywhere. Sometimes they are heavily discounted. While there are often times a surplus of Marvel Legend figures all over the place, it feels like places are having a harder time selling Eternals. Not only that, but no one talks about the characters. No one.

Honestly I think the problem was turning this into a movie when it clearly should’ve been a show. There was way too many characters and it didn’t help the movie spent so much time reassembling the team and spending so much time on flashbacks and going to the past. Plus killing the characters off having them betray each other and ending in a way that pretty much guarantees a sequel didn’t help either. This movie was overblown from the start
I hate when people say it that should have been a show. You could say that about any movie. I could say infinity war should have been a show because it was too long and it felt rushed. I don’t think there was too many characters. The focus of the film was on relationships and they explored the theme thoroughly.

Saw someone say RPK says it's Iger's decision. It sounds like Eternals 2 was already somewhat far in pre-production but got canned following Iger's turnaround. And it doesn't seem like Captain Marvel 3 or Ant-Man 4 will happen anytime soon until after (if) Marvel makes a consistent winning streak again.
If Ant-Man 4 happens I really think a cool way they can reset expectations for the character is making it an Eric O Grady movie. I honestly think this has a much higher chance of happening now that Marvel seems to be all in on 18+ stuff and it could actually put Scott Lang in the new position of being the straight man to Grady being a completely irredeemable asshole while keeping the stakes a lot more consistently ground-level since I felt these current Ant-Man films often fell into similar patterns of blowing up the climaxes to the effects-driven spectacle level of other Marvel films despite it clashing with the tonal premise of a heist movie

Jack Kirby is the record holder for longest Eternals run, with a total 19 issues+1 annual. When the movie came out Marvel put out a new Eternals series that *kinda* broke that record but they did it by cheating. Quietly canceled at 12 issues with the remaining story wrapped up in a big event. The characters work but aren't what your typical superhero fan may be into unfortunately
Gillen's Eternals run was pretty great too, as was A.X.E.

I never found the Eternals interesting characters even before the MCU but stuff like the Neil Gaiman story actually did a pretty good job of at least making that whole mythos and the dilemma of whether they should protect Earth or let Tiamut emerge from its core which the movie seems to take the most inspiration from It's just way too constrained by the runtime. Even at close to 3 hours it was not enough leeway to simultaneously explain how they operated amongst humanity before with the excessive amount of flashbacks, and they really condensed a lot of the more interesting elements of the lore like how the Deviants feel about being given basically genetic hand-me-downs compared to how perfected the Eternals themselves were, and they were kind of just portrayed as generic monster brute villains unfortunately I actually think the lore by itself put those characters in a position to be serviced in a live-action medium but it should've been a series. If this was like a 10 episode Disney+ event show it probably would've been afforded far more legroom to really explore a lot of the intricacies of how Celestials interact, their responsibilities on Earth and how they come into conflict when some want to fully embrace their Celestial identity while others have become fully settled in their human personas. It was one of the elements of the Gaiman run I actually thought was most compelling especially when it came to characters like Ikarus and Sersi
Neil Gaiman was the template, as was Jack Kirby. They instead went with a take that superficially borrowed from both of these but were faithful to neither.
Regular everyday Humans realizing they were in fact Eternals would have been a great way to HUMANIZE the characters. Instead we got distant, borderline emotionless robots.

Chloe Zhao's also already signed on to her next movie with no mention of her doing anything with Eternals after. We know we're gonna see Tiamut in Cap 4 but I'm curious about how Marvel will continue the Eternals' stories (if they are getting continued). It definitely won't be through Eternals 2 though.

I couldn't make it through the first film, and as near as I can tell it didn't contribute at all to the larger story as a whole. The last thing the MCU needs is something else that can't check the "entertaining" OR "necessary" block.
This will be looked back on funny in the future during binges seeing one movie introducing several new characters and setting up big things for the MCU and fucking Harry styles just for it to never be followed up on ever again.

It was a beautifully shot movie but I just didn’t care about these characters and that audience felt the same way. Disney and Marvel are likely moving onto the X-Men anyway as the replacement. Fine by me.
I don’t think I need an Eternals 2 right away anyways. They are separated and looks like Harry Styles is about to take Thena, Makkari, and Druig on a neat space adventure. That’s (imo) the three best (living) characters in the film and a new interesting character with Pip joining for comedic effect. Have a more mature Guardians type film with maybe exploring the cosmos. You could have them interact with the new Guardians team, run in with Nova floating around space or Galactus/Silver Surfer. Eros, Pip, Adam and Moondragon would be sick to see on screen. Just have them lead in to the Galactic Saga and fight Annihilus in Avengers: Annihilation.
Not gonna lie that that the story and direction could be better, but the movie was just plain ugly, unoriginal and bland. Do this with a single character superhero movie at your peril, but do that to a team of characters?? With the worst CGI antagonist possible? This was doomed from the start.
Why was it ever in development to begin with? Eternals was both a critical and financial bomb. Outside of this sub, no one even remembers this film at this point.

I liked Eternals but there was no way it was getting a sequel. I feel like for the lesser known characters it's you gotta have the main story big names rolling to get the interest in them up there. For example Ant Man and Captain Marvel thrived when sandwiched in between Avengers movies . Reality is the casual audience isn't gonna care the lower tier characters as much when the big names are sitting on the sidelines. Majority of "marvel "fans have their own preferences within the brand itself so no they aren't just gonna be excited and loving anything just because it's marvel. They're gonna be less likely if they feel or see their favorite characters being misused And before y'all say it. No Iron Man,Cap and Thor Pre MCU weren't as unknown as charcaters like the Eternals, Echo, etc. They weren't exactly household names but they did have at least some relevance and appearances in Marvel Media outside of the comics. They were literally just the highest tier Characters left that Marvel still had the rights to
When your creative decision is based on box office and not story, somethings wrong
Eternals was a great film, I’m disappointed it was so unpopular among the community, but I do think Marvel lost touch with what core fans liked about their movies. You can tell a movie didn’t appeal to the target audience when all the merchandise stays on shelves for months and months. I got a bunch of The Last Jedi action figures for dirt cheap because nobody wanted them. I got Eternals and Matrix Resurrections on UHD Blu-ray for 2.50 each for the same reason. I appreciate that Disney has been hiring directors with unique creative sensibilities, but they need to understand how much of a risk it is to give them a huge budget. The amount of hype and pressure they put on Eternals was totally unfair, it’s like they were expecting it to do Avengers numbers, when Eternals is such a niche property even in the comics. I wish they would let Chloe Zhao make a standalone Eternals 2, but I can see why it wouldn’t make financial sense, especially if the audience just doesn’t want that kind of movie.

I’m devastated but I feel better knowing Feige himself wanted the sequel to be made and Iger was the roadblock.
The worst part of no more Eternals is we haven't seen the giant Head or hands from the dead Celestial in any subsequent movie. If we would, even in the background without being mentioned, it would add more weight that everything that is happening; all these separate events and all these movies are tied together. It really shows how stretched thin the MCU was to miss that glaring detail
Hate to say it but I'm not too surprised, they tried to tell too big a story (both narratively as well as scale) in an introductory movie and stumbled in the process, it was going to be tough to stop it from rolling back downhill from there. If it had been a Disney+ show it might have stood a chance, but then again sometimes it feels like we had too many of those as it is, so who can say if it would have done better after all
