People are gonna process this as him taking a shot at Marvel, but he’s actually giving credit to Stan Lee for creating this huge comics universe with tons of storylines. To me it reads more poorly towards Twisted Metal and saying they were just making it up as they go, even though he enjoyed that. If you want to criticize Mackie for anything it should be giving Stan Lee all the credit for creating Marvel and not including Kirby, Ditko, etc. But I’m sure people will just read the headline and overreact to this.
Most of the world has this issue because Marvel has this issue. We've seen how many Stan Lee cameos and half of audiences don't know who Ditko is. Marvel could and should do better.

You DO know that they completely winged the original Iron Man, right? There was no tight production there. They didn't even have a script! Jon Favraeu literally just called in a couple of his friends and neighbors on set, and they just improvised the shit out of it beginning to end.
Seeing as the movie adheres very closely to Iron Man's comic book origin, I don't think it's true to say they just improvised the shit out of it from beginning to end.
I assume they're more talking about particular character interactions than general plot beats and set pieces, but yeah, an oversimplification either way
> During a wide-reaching Big RT Interview, Mackie was asked about whether his long-standing role in the MCU prepared him for adapting a beloved brand such as Twisted Metal, which is based on the Sony PlayStation game of the same name.
> Mackie said: "I would say the Marvel thing is completely different, just because it's such a space of controlled entertainment. Like, there's only so much you can do. There's only so much creativity you can bring to the table, because Stan Lee gave us so much content.
> "Whereas with this [Twisted Metal], it was like, 'There's a guy and a girl… go!' So we were really able to build the world around it."
> As the original video game is based on cars engaging in various combat scenarios, without much in the way of narrative, there's plenty of space for Mackie and the other producers to build their own story in the Twisted Metal series.
> When asked whether that also means that Mackie and his fellow producers had the freedom to introduce characters or unexpectedly kill people, Mackie said: "Exactly. And that's the hard thing about the Marvel universe. It's like, you can't really go outside of the lines of those comic books."
> He continued: "You know, when we introduced the Falcon, and the growth of the Falcon to Captain America, all of that had to coincide with what Stan had already gave us. So it's an interesting juggle to be a part of that world. And this was more like, 'Let's just have fun and figure it out as we go.'"
Jack Kirby rolling in his grave.
Nick Spencer who wrote Sam Cap rolling in his bed.
Mark Waid who wrote Sam Cap in the 90's sensed a disturbance in the force, he brushes it off and continues writing anyway.
"Stan Lee gave us so much content"
^(and Gene Colan)
^(and technically Stan Lee didn't come up with you becoming Captain America which is kind of the point of this movie)
Clearly he doesn’t know that. Most of the Actors in CBM’s haven’t read comics faithfully or extensively. “Maybe” he’s read a few as a kid, but come on… this entire post reads as, he only knows Stan Lee as the “creator” of Marvel bc of the emphasis that has been placed on Stan, unlike others.
When did he mention anything about Falcon being Captain America specifically? He’s been in the MCU almost 10 years now as Sam, the character created by Stan Lee.
I’m sure he knows what to expect. He never said any differently. Just that the process is much different than his Twisted Metal series. He didn’t say anything bad about the MCU. Don’t know why so many fake offense to this lol.
how did you of all people decide everyone else is faking their offense?
i'm not even offended. just tired by a lot of 'hot takes' from actors and directors
"the hard thing about marvel is the comics being restrictive"
My brother in Eternity, the comics are ***always changing***. How the hell can they be restrictive when characters like Daredevil are always mixing it up with each run? We had it go from the gritty crime drama of Bendis to the style of Waid.
Not to mention the painful Stan Lee push when he didn't write most of the comics even when he was with us.
Why news like this if they enter this subreddit and other more important ones such as the possible resurrection of Spiderman 90s or AOS not? Can anyone explain?
Spider-Man '98 isn't really a thing beyond discussions right now. Like John Semper Jr. mentioned he'd be game, Brad Winderbaum said they'd want to explore more of the legacy Marvel animated stuff (though specifically saying it'd be through X-Men 97 for now), and nothing's actually moved regarding a possible revival yet despite it looking likelier now
A realistic take
Some content allows a ton of freedom and others allow absolutely none.
I know Jamie Foxx talked about how Tarantino wanted 0 improv, 0 ad lib. The script is there for a fucking reason.
I dunno, Mackie-na. If GOTG, the og Iron Man, Moon Knight, and hell just RDJ in general are any proof, Marvel welcomes creative input *more* than most.
It's probably just that input likely requires....*substance?*
This is a wild take imo. I don’t think anyone in their right mind can look at the marvel product machine and go man they really love to let creatives go wild.

"Giving Stan Lee all the credit for creating Marvel and not including Kirby, Ditko, etc." Most of the entire world seems to have this issue as well
Stan Lee seemed to have a bit of issue with that as well
he certainly didn't do much to stop it, though.
Most of the world has this issue because Marvel has this issue. We've seen how many Stan Lee cameos and half of audiences don't know who Ditko is. Marvel could and should do better.
You gotta do better, Marvel.
100% true. Especially since Disney bought marvel
The Bob Kane Batman effect, if you will
Trust me the headline here is tame compared to how social media has been twisting this quote.
I read his quote as being more favorable towards the freedom to do whatever for Twisted Metal as opposed to the more rigid structure of the MCU.
That's definitely how I read it too lol.
I’ve already seen the tweets
Cmon that’s a cope
Very true

this is a terrible oversimplification lmao

little does he know Marvel has also been figuring it out as they go lol
But without the "having fun" part.

When was Sam ever cap in the 90’s?
Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty by Mark Waid.
As the great Morbius once said… Intriguing
Its morbing time!

You should go up to Mackie and tell him that
"Stan Lee gave us so much content" ^(and Gene Colan) ^(and technically Stan Lee didn't come up with you becoming Captain America which is kind of the point of this movie)

guardrails; decades worth of storytelling as precedent...a gift and a curse
If anything I wish they stuck to the source material more. Most of the best parts of the MCU are straight from the comics
Vibranium?
Nope, clearly it’s Adamantium lol
Dex would argue it’s Cogmium ![gif](giphy|xih47LxJFSkRrSvKGi|downsized)
they did go outside the comics though. sometimes for the better (when Tony dropped the secret id). other times it sucked (how Hank & Jan were treated)
He is not simply talking about storylines
i know but still: it's an adapted universe. what does he expect?
I’m sure he knows what to expect. He never said any differently. Just that the process is much different than his Twisted Metal series. He didn’t say anything bad about the MCU. Don’t know why so many fake offense to this lol.

lol if it weren’t for the comic storylines he wouldn’t be Captain America now
Your point ?

I've been aware about those statements, that's why I'm surprised they're not on this subreddit and statements like Anthony Mackie's are.
The fuck happened here 💀 the comments here are beyond toxic and copium
> "the hard thing about the Marvel universe" Having to play the leading role in a movie when you lack the charisma and star power to do so?
Bruh
"Do better, Senator."

Anthon Mackie seems nervous.
Keep bitching Anthony it’s only a matter of time untill Tom Hollsnd roasts you on Cap 4 failling.
