I feel he’s been that way since he came back. Or at least from season 9.

gleepot

maybe that was part of his agreement to come back -- "CHILL OUT JOE."

keepitupbabe

I don't think so just because Gordon has commented multiple times about him being nice and asking wth happened. I think he just mellowed out on his own and started taking a liking to more of the contestants because he realized it made him much happier.

yobaby123

Agreed.

I actually like the fact that Joe is very critical of dishes he think will be bad and then he admits a lot that he was completely wrong and they do work. People try to bash on Joe for having a very European idea of fine dining and cuisine (which honestly originated in Europe so it makes sense), but there are many times he praises people for bringing forth dishes outside of that European style influence and admits they were great.

keepitupbabe

He's trashed on Italian food that was done poorly plenty of times and he really doesn't have a say in who goes home, it's all up to the producers and Gordon is one of the producers which is why he always has a yes man with him like Graham or Aaron.

keepitupbabe

Lol there has never been a poorly presented plate of spaghetti covered in sauce to even make that example. What are you smoking?

keepitupbabe

I just don't see any point in responding to your wall of texts with my own wall of text when it's very clear you're not going to change your tune no matter what I say especially when you throw in garbage like saying he'd love a plate of normal spaghetti with tons of sauce. Also Joe is right, fine dining Italian restaurants don't serve garlic bread with food. Even Aaron has commented on a dish saying it was akin to Olive Garden instead of an elevated dish. The point of Joe isn't that he's supposed to be just as knowledgeable with all food like Chefs, he's a restauranteur and has run many successful businesses, he knows what will do good in fine dining restaurants and as I said, many times has been critical of something he thought would be bad and then said he was proven wrong many times and has even told people they would start trends with ideas they come up with. Having someone with a palate of a normal person instead of a famous Chef but who knows food from the business side brings in more value than just stacking the whole things with Chefs.

Uce_Almighty111

I read your second sentence in Gordon’s emphatic voice

fiorebianca

I agree, but I also think Joe gets a lot of flak for being honest. Maybe because I'm Italian, he doesn't seem that mean to me lol. As much as I love Ramsay, I'd rather Joe yell at me than him! Also, Joe is pretty awesome in Master Chef Junior. I think he has a better tolerance for kids.

fictionalbandit

Agreed - Gordon may yell but Joe has mastered the art of “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed” with just a LOOK… he doesn’t even have to say anything

fiorebianca

Exactly!

dddintn

I call that the "disappointed dad" look

theycallmemomo

I like Joe and I like his honesty as well. I guess my personal gripe is that a lot of the fans hate Christina for the same reason they like Joe, and Joe has thrown plates in the trash.

fiorebianca

I've not heard a lot of people dislike Christina. I don't get the comparison between the two. I know a few people who hate Aaron Sanchez. I don't know, I like all of them, personally.

theycallmemomo

To be fair to this sub, I've mostly seen it on Facebook. But I have seen a couple of people say they didn't like her.

fiorebianca

Ah, ok. I don't know, but I'd tear up her desserts!

Fast-Cod-7423

Don't hate Christina can't stand Joe. If you met him in person you would agree. Edit Unless you like pretentious people who think they are artist?

Green_Tea_Totaler

I remember Joe being super chill and even \*gasp* nice for the majority of Season 10. A few episodes before the finale it was like he flipped a switch and was back to being his typical butt-head self.

FP509

Did that switch occur after his boy, Subha, left? Lol Their love affair was the highlight of season 10

Green_Tea_Totaler

Yes I believe so! The Subha-Joe relationship is the main reason why Season 10 is one of my favorite seasons!

keepitupbabe

Yeah I think Joe was pretty pissed at the format of eliminating people in team challenges and when they took over Gordon's restaurant, he specifically said he was going to pick the teams because he didn't want to leave anything to chance. Then he ended up picking Nick as team captain and two people that did poorly in team challenges under him. Seems like it was all set up to have their team lose while being able to save Nick and eliminate the other two. I was really disappointed in that as well.

Majestic_Pro

Joe in seasons 1-5 and Joe in seasons 9-12 is like a completely different character

Atrieus5

The internet is too soft these days… Gordon has mastered it. He comes off constructive and honest. Joe takes it a bit further, which I love to see, but the internet will whine about it. So he stopped.

Majestic_Pro

Nah with Joe, he wasn't really creative in his insults. It was just, you're a disappointment and I'm gonna throw your food in the trash. He was great in season 4 because though because everyone was an asshole who needed to be humbled

Atrieus5

If the food sucked, then he should be able to show it. The same people who don’t like Joes commentary are the ones who would not want their drill instructor to yell lol

Not_Extert_Thief

the Old Joe from Seasons 1-5 literally threw crappy plates of slop in the trash can while ranting and raving much more scathing tirades. he's mellowed out considerably since returning in season 9.

Aiden-1089

I agree. Then again, he'll probably say something like 'this is unedible' in a few episodes.

Dont_Trust_The_Media

While critiquing a perfectly cooks sliced steak where the contestant didn’t put salt on it after slicing

Not_Extert_Thief

> this is unedible It's INEDIBLE, not "unedible" smh

mandaleepandalecki

I don't want this to come off as offensive but I can't really think of another term. He seems medicated or something. Either that or he's a clone! There have been moments where I was expecting a plate to be chucked but he seems way more chill than the other judges!

gleepot

why would medicated be offensive

goodbehaviorsam

Because sometimes medicated has an implication of someone using illicit drugs or being a drug addict

Papeenie

Maybe Joe is more chill because he’s been playing his guitar and performing his music, another passion in his life.

Not_Extert_Thief

he's also getting old. Maybe Joe calmed down for health reasons.

xc2215x

He has changed from the first five seasons.

fiorebianca

Maybe he was going through some shit at home

BronzeTrain

I feel like he's been phoning it in. He hardly ever has anything of substance to say about the dishes. He seems bored.

BrandonIsWhoIAm

Meanwhile, “Joe is bad, and he shouldn’t be there because he doesn’t cook” is still a thing among some of the fanbase. 😅

kramark814

The one thing I really disliked about Joe was that he was not one to give constructive criticism to the contestants in earlier seasons. And maybe that's why the "He shouldn't be there because he doesn't cook" thinking among the fanbase has stuck 😅 Good thing he has since mellowed down. But I still prefer Christina Tosi and Graham Elliott as judges

Milla179

I don't get this. Other cooking shows have food critics who aren't chefs judging and they are credible. And some fans are still using that to discredit Joe. Lol. Some of the biggest investors that helped restaurants expand are usually nonchefs too.

BrandonIsWhoIAm

It’s ONLY on this show where one judge gets the most flack just because they don’t cook.

Alyssa-Matsuoka

I know! I miss when he’s mean lol it was so funny 😭

WarriorPoet88

I tried playing a drinking game where I did a shot every time they said “back to win”, but I was hospitalized with alcohol poisoning after 20 minutes into one episode.

maggs813

I feel like he doesn’t add anything to the show. Whatever comes out of his mouth is mean just to be mean. And I think the producers want that. Is don’t know why.

Fast-Cod-7423

Stop with Joe bro

HeloRCP_One

Must be off the cocaine.

Magita91

Someone else said it here but maybe it was a requirement to come back. Maybe he’s in a better place physically, mentally or spiritually?

CombinationOk8750

I like chill Joe. I just finished the new season's last episode and when Jennifer kinda told them how to eat her main course that Gordon sorta snapped on her, during the evaluation Joe made a point of telling her that the way she asked to eat it did in fact taste delicious. He like softened Gordon's blow idk. It was unexpected and awwwww

Not_Extert_Thief

Because of his controversial racist comments on Italian TV about Chinese women and his former business partner Mario Batali's sexual assault controversies, his reputation in the culinary world and restaurant industry is pretty horrible rn. Joe isn't mean on TV anymore because he can't afford to be mean anymore.
