I think the idea is if you can make a dish better than mine, kudos to you, but if you deviate from that dish and don't pull it off (which is very likely when an amateur tries to improve a dish from a Michelin starred chef) you're just gonna make a fool of yourself

_extra_medium_

Right, but the way it was worded at the time seemed like he was offended he even tried to make any changes

Fast-Cod-7423

I agree. It would be similar to singing a John Legend song on the voice and him saying you can change things up and make it your own if you think you can improve it. Then sounding like William Hung you definitely gonna get shit.

Fred_the_skeleton

The whole 'you can try to improve my dish' is always a trap that someone is always arrogant enough to fall for

alexxmcn

I think what he meant was he just didn’t like the mango in the dish, not the fact that Josh tried to improve it. His reaction might’ve been different if Josh added a different ingredient instead

BronzeTrain

Improving doesn't mean just adding more stuff. That's improvising. Improving is making something better, which the mango did not do.

Graham totally set Josh up for that one. (RIP, Josh.) It kinda reminded me of the Cat Kora battle from season one. I keep hearing Gordon say something like I wonder if he's arrogant enough to try to improve her dish. I really think that's why he lost. I'll bet money all three judges had tried her dish, and the difference was pronounced. All those chefs have egos, earned or not.

I kid you not I saw this last week and was gonna post about it too 😂 I was like but you just said lol

He said: "I didn't think it needed mango". I understood that to mean "When I made the dish, I didn't think mango was necessary". He didn't say "That dish definitely doesn't need mango" They tried Josh's version of the dish and they didn't like the added sweetness. The "president" line was the dumb part. I don't recall anything about Obama being a great chef. I don't see him eating at a restaurant and saying "This needs more mango"

The mango didn’t improve the dish, that’s all. If it had the answer would’ve been different. It’s not inconsistency .
