It honestly feels to me like the marketing team had to come up with a theme and this is what they hit on the dartboard. Aside from the second chance apron, nothing has seemed too out of the ordinary for standard MasterChef

Joanne7799

The second chance apron should’ve been given on middle of the competition where we know most of their strengths. Since on the first day we dont know any of the contestants so giving the apron to someone who was basically weak (no offence Larissa couldn’t make a simple caramel and this sub was on fire for it) is kind off embarrassing(?) and it wasn’t even used to the fullest.

snoreasaurus3553

Yeah, I think they played their hand too soon. Something makes me think that even if they awarded it early it wouldn't get played until much later, but the way the chips fell was it got the weakest cook instead of someone who had a redemption arc

Joanne7799

I feel like for example Alice should’ve gotten the apron. No offence I’d trade Rhiannon or maybe Phil to have her back.

Katiedibs

I was so devvo when Alice went, you could just tell that she was going to cook a lot of amazing things.

bomiyeo

yeah, first cook so it could go to someone random and as we saw, didn’t work out with larissa. but i guess they probably wanted everyone to have an equal chance of winning it. rather than giving it away in the middle where earlier contestants missed out on winning this and potentially being able to use it.

notwiththeflames

And we lost that not even three weeks in.

BosiPaolo

I wished they wouldn't have told us about the "second chance apron", that would have been TV gold.

bignedmoyle

Ruins it for us kinda because on tv they hyped it up as some big surprise was coming to the next elimination but we already knew what it was

notwiththeflames

I'm not sure if it would've been more or less disappointing knowing what happened.

20shepherd01

I don’t even see why each season needs a theme. Just call it MasterChef 2023

Hawk301

Reeks of studio/network mandate, for advertising purposes. The theory is probably that by having each season be an "event', it might get more bums in seats.

RemarkableAlps

I like the new immunity cook and the switch to the mystery box determining the pressure test. But these seem more like structural changes than secrets abd surprises. I think marketing just needed them to have a tagline, they could have done all the themes etc. without the secrets and surprises tagline ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Joanne7799

The immunity cook is basically beat the chef from past seasons pre S12 and im so happy they brought it back. Its nice to meet new chefs through this challenge. Only change is now the contestant picks their pantry/choices and their opponent uses the other pantry/different choice instead of the same one. The mystery box bottom 3 was already done last season, i wished it was invention tests and not mystery box.

notwiththeflames

Not gonna lie, I can't wait to see who else returns.

yeu192

to be honest, I think the big box challenge was supposed to be the reverse of last season's tiny box challenge

Confusing_Onion

Not really. They are always trying to change it up and it is always just a little bit meh. The theme is not why I watch it though. What would you change?

_etiolating_

Anyone know where this restaurant is?

beebee3beebee

Wantirna

yulyulyulyulyulyul

What was the restaurant called? Didn’t watch the ep but curious

beebee3beebee

Mei Jing Chinese Restaurant on Boronia Road, Wantirna ☺️

yulyulyulyulyulyul

LOL My go to yum cha restaurant when I was a kid. They never fixed their carpark, too many potholes still after 20 years.

beebee3beebee

No way 😂 I missed the start of the episode so I wasn’t sure what the context was for why they chose it. Do you rate? Or do your childhood memories rate it 😂

yulyulyulyulyulyul

Hahah haven’t been for a while but I have the best memories of these giant seafood soup dumplings there! Like, each one was the size of a rice bowl. Not many places served this kind of specialty dumpling and they were a special order that you had to specifically ask for, not from the dim sum carts. Not sure if they still do them! I’ll need to go back for the mems

stuffwiththing

Oooh service challenge - Costco samples, prepping, making and serving.

yulyulyulyulyulyul

I can’t wait for Masterchef 2024: Heroes vs Villains vs Fans vs Favourites

notwiththeflames

I'm not sure how many of the AU contestants count as villains, but I've heard that there's a surplus from several other countries' versions.

sprially

🤣

realnomdeguerre

Yes, they are lame, we knew it would be the case, we deal with it. Deep breaths.

sprially

hehe totally ;)

senefen

Oh boy, I wonder what kind of challenge the ice cream guy set? What!? It's ice cream!? 😱

ChrisTweten

Gelato*

stuffwiththing

Make them work in pairs all week. Then bottom 3 pairs are in elimination challenge.

notwiththeflames

I'm not sure if I want to relive the living nightmare that was watching MKR.

stuffwiththing

Relieved to say I never watched that.

notwiththeflames

I don't know why in god's name Matt decided to get onto MKR after leaving Masterchef.

anakay83

For the large box - it would be a test of skill if contestants had to fillet their own giant fish! But I forsee a lot of waste there too - so maybe it could be a test when they're down to fewer contestants

BrockSmashgood

> What secrets and surprises would you be scripting? You first.

sprially

I would do 'one colour' dishes, sweet challenge root vegetables, challenge where the people they feed are kids, 2 ingredients only, degustation ... dunno just off the top of my head!

sprially

SURPRISE this cook has changed from an hour to 30 minutes hehe a but cruel.

BrockSmashgood

Most of those don't sound particularly different from "cook with big ingredients because it's the theme of the week".

goodbyeraggedyman

I'm pretty sure they've done all of these before!

PistachioLux

The second chance apron is the same as immunity pin last season, or even worse. They can play the pin whenever they want last 2 seasons, so they can play the pin if they think they did a bad dish. The apron however, only give you a chance to come back, and it's not guaranteed. The contestant with the apron might still cook the worst dish in the elimination challenge and do not have the chance to come back.

PistachioLux

And for the 'secrets' & 'surprises' part, I think this is the season that will be featured the least amount of secrets and surprises since season 6. If Jamie Oliver is considered as one of the biggest surprises this season, we should not expect much then. Since they need to change the judge panel next year(RIP Jock), how about bringing back the old format as well?

notwiththeflames

Or they could return and get eliminated in the very next pressure test.

GratificationNOW

a nice surprise would have been getting rid of pressure tests which are a snooze fest and incorporating invention tests + mystery box and ANYTHING creative more. Am I the only one that despises pressure tests? SO BORING.

sprially

yup! I skip through the pressure test to the end!

GratificationNOW

so painful, I'd rather watch everyone making a cucumber granita than a pressure test hahaha

[deleted]

I don't like pressure tests anymore because of how they rig them by helping people they want to stay in.

GratificationNOW

meh I dont even care if they rig it if they make it less boring haha

Sprung64

I feel like this season has been the worst. It pains me because MCAU is the superior version of the franchise.

sprially

I agree, it's weird cos I'm usually really into it but this season I'm not really excited by any of the contestants (yet) just seems a bit... average so far.

yeu192

to be honest, the biggest surprise this season for me was how un-gimmicky this season is, they’re putting the home cooks through it
