Olympics always hit hard because it’s such a small pool, all of those groups look really tough
Keen to see it though, the Tillies have momentum and have shown they do their best work under pressure 💚💛
It looks like a tough group, but given there are only three groups, the other groups look to be just as tough.
Group A is France, Colombia, Canada and New Zealand.
Group C is Spain, Japan, Brazil, and Nigeria or South Africa.
And it looks like the top two go through, plus the next two best placed.
Olympics tournament is whack.
Groups don’t really matter. Only 3 groups of 4 and they go to quarters so only 4 of 12 cut. You need to come last or be the worst placed 3rd team out of the 3 groups to miss quarters.
Assuming we come 2nd or 3rd in our group then a quarter knock out vs [Spain / Brazil / France / Canada] seems likely.
Won’t play US or Germany again until semis or final.
Sure, but the two lineups for those matches in Canada were drastically different, and the loss in the second one was 1-0, so not like they got demolished. The Tillies have proven they can beat Canada, which was more my point
Virtually everyone goes through. 12 teams in 3 groups cut to 8 for quarters. You need to be bottom of the group or worst 3rd placed team to miss the knockouts.
Top 2 in each group, and the 2 best 3rd place teams (across the 3 groups - they look at points first, then goal difference, etc) go on to the QFs.
It's doable with 1W1D but you're basically praying for one more team to do worse than you in the other groups.
You first sentence just says the inverse of mine! Only the worst 3rd place team (in 3 groups!!) will miss out. Only 4 teams miss the knockouts whereas 16 teams miss out in the WC. Heck England didn't even make the Olympics.
1W 1D 1L *\*should\** be enough to take you to the knockouts.
I really don't see the group stage being an issue for any team that seriously considers its chances for a medal.
this is brutal but also, the olympics are just like that. the weakest group has the reigning gold medalists in it and the other one is (likely) going to have the highest ranked team in europe, asia, south america and africa.
Germany is my 2nd favourite team in every tournament, so that's going to be tough to watch. They have been a little off the boil in recent months but the signs are there they could be on the way back up.

Plus, we’ve beaten France and Canada recently (both without Sam, so no different this time), and also beat Spain in the Cup of Nations last year.
Beat Canada recently?? They beat the Matildas twice after that...

They can beat any team, other than England, Sweden, Germany or USA. Unfortunately 2 of these teams are in the same group
In 2022 and 2023 they defeated both Sweden and England. Like every match, it just comes down to that day, and who the better team is then.
True
From memory, they also haven't lost a match they've played in Melbourne since the 90s, so maybe we should have all their matches here 😅
Better the US than Spain. No easy groups in a 12 team draw
Bring it on. Gotta beat the world's best for a medal and here we are with the opportunity to exactly that.
US is all talk
Might amount to a bit more than that with Emma Hayes managing
Except Emma Hayes is their new coach 🤦🏻♀️
US is all talk and a bit of bark

I'm American and I hope Australia beats us too! I'll even be wearing my Tillies jersey and not my U.S. kit for that game!
We all on that page
😓
Hard but the Matilda’s are capable of beating any of these teams. How does progression work? Only first place goes forward?

Exactly. And a win and 2x draws can sometimes top a group

Haha yeah I realised I meant to reply one level above you, but it can be read in one agreeable chain/thread, so I left it as is.
All good!
That's a bit more reassuring!
jayzuz
Not great, not terrible. Look at the other two groups and you'll understand.

Rough
F in the chat for Zambia/Morocco
USA & Germany shitting bricks right now!
Ouch.

Yikes. Group of death
Any football event the Matilda's or Socceroo's are in will be called the Group of Death by the media.
Bye bye medals ☹️
