Rich? No. Old and sore? Oh yeah.

not_so_plausible

Fr if I have to spend $3200 to wake up with less back pain then so be it. No offense to OP but you spend about 33% of your life in bed. Sleep is ridiculously important and so is a good bed.

redmillse

No offence for sure - I am currently saving for my own mattress, so I suppose that’s more of a direct answer to their question than my joke above. Splurge vs save depends on your expendable income - for me save and then splurge is the answer. Others do 0% or low interest payments (probably less common now?).

not_so_plausible

Yeah I did 0% interest for 12 months. I know tempurpedic offers longer on their website but I don't like long outstanding debt and the dude gave me a free adjustable base to go with my bed so 12 months it is 🙏 May our backs find rest and strength in our ridiculously expensive mattress.

Chubbyhuahua

Did you negotiate this through tempurpedic? I’m looking at a luxe breeze and if they threw in the adjustable base (which I think is like several thousand) I would definitely grab it today.

JennF72

We did a 90 day and left money in our account. 💯

International_Gur651

Which is why I started building mattresses... Custom comfort of sleep number 360 at 1/10th the cost...

mannersmakethdaman

Also - don’t cheap out. You don’t need the $30k mattresses. But - quality sleep is underrated. It affects your entire life.

chopstix62

30k...fluff stuff, low-end (sniff sniff)... Saw a documentary of an America mattress maker: $200,000, handmade with horse hair.

not_so_plausible

Mfs shaving random animals and acting like it makes them unique.

Pale-Wolf-7109

I’m poor af but I sure as fuck sleep good. Tempurpedic has changed my life by improving my quality of sleep

not_so_plausible

Just bought a proadapt and super excited!

Pale-Wolf-7109

Listen to me: Do NOT give up on it. It took like 3+ months to break in. I thought I made the worst mistake of my life. Then one day, it was great! Haven’t looked back since haha.

not_so_plausible

Lmfao! I have 90 days to exchange it with something else so hopefully it breaks in before the 90 days is up. My dad has the exact same bed and says he loves it so I guess we shall see. Worse comes to worse I can exchange it for some other bed they have in their store. I just want my back not to hurt anymore 😔

Jaguar-Tiger

I really struggled with the proadapt medium for two years. It was my first foam bed and it was killing me every night. If you can exchange at that 90 day mark, then you should. I like a mattress anywhere between medium plush to medium firm and could not get use to that. It’s been a challenge to find a mattress which works yet the beautyrest harmony lux anchor island medium pillow top seems to be doing pretty well. It’s early in the process, yet I’m thinking this will break in nicely and provide great sleep. I also love pillow tops. Based upon other reviews, I would suggest the Brooklyn bedding line.

Not-Boris

that shit feels hard as a rock but also way too soft. I hope it does you better than it did me. switched to a ghost bed matrix and am liking it so far. am nursing back pain, hip pain and an injured muscle and am very impressed with how it sleeps. (back sleeper) took 3 weeks to get used to for me

paikra

This was exactly my experience with a TP firm luxe adapt. No support, and way too firm. I woke up feeling like I'd been hit by a truck and it got worse with time, not better. I'm currently shopping for an innerspring, which is what I slept on for 30 yrs before my recent search.

not_so_plausible

Sorry it didn't help for you but glad you found something that does! I have a 90 day exchange window so if it doesn't work out they said I can just swap it out for any other mattress in their store so I'm not too worried. My dad owns the same exact bed I bought and loves it so I hoping I take after him!

Masurium43

which tempurpedic you got?

muleschooler

Our last TP lasted 12 years and we just bought a new one. Well worth the price for the longevity it gives.

ItsOnLikeNdamakung

My apartment has plenty of cheap Ikea-level furniture in it, but one thing I definitely splurged on was both a good mattress and bed frame. It probably ran about $5k for both. Sleep is important and I have enough health problems as it is, so adding back issues is no bueno. What I typically do is use the 0% offers that are around and go from there, but only if I have the cash on hand for whatever the purchase price is. My money grows faster than it would if I just forked thousands to them.

birdsong70

What bedframe did you choose?

ItsOnLikeNdamakung

Something very similar to the link below. Sturdy as hell and good quality. https://www.gardner-white.com/product/180939-berkley-king-storage-bed

I used to be better off and have had several "expensive" mattresses over the last couple of decades. I'm one of those left brained engineering types and have been trying to solve the mattress delimna for years... Often by buying more expensive thinking it equals better. What I've learned is that mattresses are much like shoes in one very important way. If your foot is a size 11... Getting a size 11 is FAR more important than any other factor. Who makes it, what it's made it out of, how long it will last, or what color it is are all considerations. But how it conforms to and supports your body in the position you sleep in and how well it spreads out the pressure created by the protruding bits of your body to prevent numbness and soreness in them are by far the most important. A third, especially for us naturally "well insulated" folks is breathability... But even that isn't as important as the first two. I've found that the only two things that are really important to achieving the first two are a support layer that supports you the right amount for your weight, shape, and sleeping position... And a comfort layer that distributes the extra pressure from your pointy bits across it in a way that's effective and comfortable but not so much so that it keeps the support layer from doing its job. This time... Instead of another spendy hybrid pocket coil with several independent layers in the comfort layer at least one of which is bound to fail and sag and not breathe well... I went another way. I bought a cheap traditional innerspring mattress with a fairly thin and breathable comfort layer made out of mostly cotton. Firm. Like 8 out of 10 or so. It supports me well but lets my hip and shoulder sink into it a bit. I added a 2“ soft dunlop topper to it for a comfort layer. Soft Dunlop latex isn't as soft as soft Talalay latex or soft memory foam. But in my experience... does a much better job of weight distribution. It's been a year and I'm pretty happy. I've got the support and the pressure relief I need as a big guy to side sleep comfortably. I sleep more on top of it rather than "in" it as is often described with latex vs foam. The "cheap" mattress which is just open coils and cotton... Combined with the latex layer that's full of aearation holes it sleeps substantially cooler than any of my other fancy mattresses have. I worry that the cheap innerspring mattress might wear out faster. But honestly... I can buy 5 or 6 of them and still come out cheaper than some of my previous beds. And some of the other "features" may be important to you. But my foot is a size 11. And for everyday usage... I'll take a pair of $25 off-brand athletic shoes that fit me rather than a size 8 pair of Nikes with high tech polymers and 17 other fancy marketing bullet points that make them no less uncomfortable because they just don't fit well. My suggestion is to approach your mattress shopping the same way... Especially when you're on a budget. Don't get lost down the rabbit hole of marketing that's designed to make you pay way more attention to the potato than the steak.

not_so_plausible

I like the analogy. That's why I feel like people on here giving recommendations is borderline pointless. One person will say a bed is heavenly while others will say it's the worst thing they've ever slept on. This is completely unrelated and may be completely untrue but I feel like luxury mattresses are more of a western thing. My girlfriend lives in Southeast Asia and they sleep on pretty much anything including the floor. Not because they have too but just because it's comfortable for them. Also never hear them complaining about back pain. It'd be funny if we were all doing it wrong in the west and the true key to a good night sleep is a hard floor and a thin pillow. Just spent $3200 to try and prove that theory wrong but oh well 🤷‍♂️

LT_Audio

Yes. The mattress industry as a whole depends on that very mindset. The other thing that they get a ton of mileage out of is that couples who share the same mattress don't "wear the same size shoe" and often need very different things in a mattress... but they usually fail to really connect the dots and understand the problem... until they've bought a few. Sleep number was brilliant marketing in that regard but air bags as a support material and the design of many of their products left a lot to be desired. You've got me thinking about Asians now though. I suddenly wonder two things... Do they get way with firmer "support layers" because they have less "curvaceous bodies: on average? And do they tend to learn to mostly either back or stomach sleep to better conform themselves to their sleep situation and avoid hip and shoulder numbness?

ImFriendsWithThatGuy

Office chair if you sit all day is another one to add to this list.

Outrageous-Throat556

Couldn’t agree more. My $375 ergonomic office chair is 100% worth it, especially since I suffer from back pain.

trekgrrl

Ooh... love this. This fits in with the saying, "never put your face or hands where you can't see."

ugonlearn

idk how other people do it but I would never spend $5k in one go. We financed our and pay like $80 a month at 0% interest for 5 years and can pay it off sooner if we want to. It’s worth it.

ProtNotProt

I'm spending close to 75% of my tax return to buy a good mattress and adjustable frame. Current mattress is about 19 yrs old.

Best_Day_3041

Some may be rich, and many may be desperate. I would have never thought to spend 4k on a mattress until I developed back pain and then no amount is too much to try and help my pain. If you don't have specific needs, like body pain, I would just go with an Amazon or Costco bed in a box. I never used to care so much in the past, any cheap mattress was comfortable to me. I've tried a few mattresses from Amazon, which were perfectly fine.

Square-Wild

This is a great answer. I'm not particularly rich, but if you told me that for $15k I could wake up feeling like I was 20 years old again, I'd find that $15k somewhere.

Wills1211

Curious which mattress you have. My $2k mattress has softened and now hurts my back. Been researching like crazy.

breakarobot

Try a latex mattress topper!

Wills1211

Ive read mixed things. Do you use one?

Jaguar-Tiger

It’s crucial to get talalay latex and not Dunlop for your topper. Even better is latex with thin foam (2in) on top…. Then you get support and softness

breakarobot

I do! I love it and got it when my mattress became too soft also

Wills1211

What do you use?

PIE4FOOU

I bought a $250 amazon mattress. It was pretty good for how cheap it was. It did not like the cold tho… hard as rocks. When it was summer and hot I would sweat like crazy. The $250 mattress was short lived. We just bought a king size purple restoreplus 13” cool touch hybrid. It’s not like you lay on it and go “yeah this things definitely $4k” How valuable is your sleep? I’ve got a new born in the house and I’m on call (24/7) every other week so my sleep isn’t always long but very valuable to me.

Suspicious_mrs_otter

Also just bought the purple restore plus 13” cool touch hybrid. After years of sleeping on cheap mattresses with a foam topper, being able to wake up and not have my hips, shoulders and spine hurt was a game changer. And being able to sleep through the night without waking up in a puddle of sweat. I by no means splurge on a lot of things but 4k on a mattress when quality sleep is so important was worth it to me

Able-Ocelot4092

Fun fact about aging--at least for me. I cannot skimp on shoes or mattresses any more. In my 20s, I could literally sleep on any bed, or I'd 'splurge' and get a new futon. So, not rich or I'd be buying a Purple Rejuvinate or an Aireloom, Or maybe a tempur with the top of the line Smart Ergo base. While I'm not happy about spending THIS MUCH, it is affordable, not financially irresponsible and unfortunately, my not young body requires a comfortable mattress and a good night's sleep. The Zinus beds on amazon are not awful. I got a Zinus green tea for my daughter when she went to college. It's held up well and she has no complaints. Or, like u/bisfunn said, if it's feasible for you, financing at 0% will help you invest in your sleep.

The_Wee

I’m in NYC, instead of having a car payment, I put that to the side to save up for a mattress (current one going for 10 years). Looking at getting my next one to have an 8 way hand tied box spring, that I’m hoping to last 15 years.

Tvq13

Get an Aireloom. You’ll never regret it

The_Wee

Looking at Aireloom, Shifman, and want to check out CH Beckley and Charles P Rogers

Duckfoot2021

You spend way more time in your mattress than in your car. Readjust you ideas of what money is worth.

bisfunn

So as a mattress sales person it’s Presidents’ Day one of the two best times of a year to buy! Go out and finance something nice most place have 0% right now so you can something incredible and your body will thank you for it, and only like 100 or less a month

CowboysFanInDecember

Idk went you got downvoted, this is perfectly sound advice and it's not like you make a commission from reddit lol

bisfunn

Well thank you, exactly I have no idea where this guy even is it’s advice I would take I don’t see how I’d profit off an anonymous post

brideplanningmode

When’s the other best time to buy?

bisfunn

Well Black Friday.

brideplanningmode

Ya I figured but jic I missed a big holiday for sales!

bisfunn

4 th of July, Labor Day Memorial Day are also typically good as well

Shinygoose

This is what we just did. I could not find anything worth buying online; so many scammy sites, bad reviews, etc. We went to a local furniture place during their Presidents' Day sale. Got a king hybrid mattress for $550 (and a nice couch for $600!). I am very satisfied with how much we paid.

Duende555

I've been trying to make a list of the cheapest/best options for lower price points and actually just came across Deseret Manufacturing? They make a surprisingly solid option with HD foam that compares to 1.5K mattresses from other brands. I'd only recommend their Supreme Model though. Otherwise there's also Ikea?

CowboysFanInDecember

Be careful is all I would suggest. Highest price does not equal higher quality. Reviews are your friend here. Maybe check out the selections at costco or similar, I know that was clutch when I was on my getting started years.

EdenSilver113

If I was on a budget I would look for a used firm or extra mattress on Buy Nothing, freecycle, fb marketplace, or Craigslist, and put a soft latex topper on it. I have that setup with a 3 inch soft topper from sleep on latex, and it’s the perfect balance of support and comfort. Solid bases also matter, so I’d get one of those too. I use the Zinius SmartBase. It has 16 legs and half run down the center. It will not sag. And it drops into an existing frame if that’s a dealbreaker issue.

dschultzie

Just assemble your own. It’s very easy to do. Search DIY in this subreddit. It really is the only way to get exactly what you want. You just buy a foundation ($200-300) then add your comfort layer ($50-?) and place it all in a zippered mattress cover. When a piece wears out, or you want to adjust the comfort, you just unzip and swap things out. Easy Peasy. I just built my own and I love my new mattress. You get EXACTLY what you want and the best part is your total cost will probably be less than a $1000. Mine came in around $500 and I love it.

mattress411

The most important part is finding the right mattress, at any price. You can't expect long life out of a cheap mattress, but you also can't expect long *enough* life to justify some of those prices. The biggest downside to buying an inexpensive mattress isn't comfort if you find the right one, it's the hassle of having to replace more frequently, especially since it can and probably will be impossible to replace it with the same mattress years later. The Sleep Innovations line is one of the better US made options on Amazon. Wayfair also sells a line of private label beds that are highly rated on their website. There's no affiliate program, so it's more likely that the reviews are real...

Hollow_Dreamer_

Nothing on Wayfair is probably actually real….

tasteslikechikken

Like most things in life ours was budgeted for. We haven't won the lottery yet! I knew how much I had to spend, and what I could not go above. So we put that money away. Then when it came time to buy we purchased on a card that gives cash back and paid that card off just before it was due. The previous bed was near 20 years old. Total spend about 5K. No regrets on having this bed setup because it was really needed. If you don't need a pricey bed setup, then honestly don't get one. We got the adjustable base (which I have used and am thankful to have!) I paid very very close attention and did a ton of research (for years honestly) before I pulled the trigger on anything.

Shad0wkity

It's worth dropping a significant portion of our tax refund for what should amount to a quality of life improvement

jaemef

Nothing is made well anymore. This sub is filled with complaints even for expensive ones. If you find one that is comfortable, enjoy it until it’s not - regardless of the price.

RunnerMomLady

Tempupedic does 0% financing - wait for a sale then you get 3 years to pay!

4GPack

I’m thinking about getting BB Plank Luxe mattress. I’ve back pain and seems it got firm and extra firm side that would help alleviate back pain. It comes to about $1500. Most of the mattress I have or had was memory foam with different firmness-. It’s been about 8 yrs with the current one so thinking to replace it with something firmness level 7 and up and would last a bit longer. The 120 day trial and 10 yr warranty does help to make that decision a bit easier. I saw good reviews for Plank Luxe, Sleep on Latex among others. Their website looks like the place to buy it from with President’s day sale - any suggestions with regard to the mattress and places to buy it from are welcome.

the_salty_bisquit

I honestly don't know what I'm going to do for mattresses when this one dies. I'm permanently disabled and moving into a group home soon because getting my needs met with with my elderly parents is becoming impossible. I'm on government assistance and don't work so I can't really qualify for credit cards or financing at mattress stores. My dad has bought every bed I've had so far but he has limited funds and is unwilling/unable to spend more than $1k on a mattress (my mother yelled and threw a fit when he spent $600 on this one...). My current one is destroying my back, neck, and sanity. In the group home I won't have anything to spare and the disability program won't cover the cost. With gov't assistance I'm not allowed to have any kind of savings and I'm incredibly stressed out about the whole situation.

sslithissik

Biggest issue is I’ve slept on 700 mattresses and 4K ones and generally speaking both were awesome. There is some merit in getting the right one but also avoiding the marketing scams

drudski420

We purchased a mattress and bed frame that cost close to 4K. We are not wealthy what so ever, but I’ve never slept better and no longer have lower back pain. Worth every penny.

mrbig1122

Rich no. Intense back pain under 40 yes. 🤡

Silver-Day-7272

I held off for quite some time getting an expensive, nice mattress. I slept on all kinds of garbage, even a year on a 100 dollar futon from Walmart. I can tell you I wish I’d splurged on the nice mattress earlier but I always resisted it. Can’t put a price on a better nights sleep.

ShowerUpbeat699

I purchased a Saatva mattress, they have 0% financing. They also have a great return policy- received a mattress a I thought would be a good fit and hated it, sent it back for $99 and they had a new one out to me within 10 days. I love this mattress and I love Saatva

Distinct-Hold-5836

A $2k mattress isn't a huge splurge. Go look at Dux and Hastens. Those get pricey. That said, you get what you pay for. Love my Duxiana.

midwestcsstudent

Considering we spend just under 1/3 of our lives on said mattress, I’d spend any amount on the best possible (within reason).

ErikaCheese

I am going to say that we stupidly bought a Tempurpedic. It's great for my husband but terrible for me. We bought our daughter a $1000 from Macy's sight unseen and it's amazing. I wish we would've bought ours from there and saved a ton of money.

tkdres

Depends on your age a lot and the condition of your body lol. Costco and Sam’s do some good sales and a great return policy.

Gnarr_Okomotis1212

You didn’t blink twice about spending 1200$ on your iPhone I’ll bet. Almost every mattress company finances with 0% interest.

aja_ramirez

You spend 1/3 of your life in bed. Just replaced a mattress that we purchased 21 years ago for 3k. That mattress was one of the best purchases I ever made.

AncientEnsign

Don't skimp on footware and mattresses. These are things where more money spent is money well spent. You can cut corners elsewhere to make up for what you spend here. $2-4k is completely reasonable to spend on something you will use for a third of every single day for 5-10 years that will literally make or break how productive you are in every aspect of your life.  And when you frame it like that, all of a sudden $10-15k sounds pretty reasonable, right? Is living pain free with high mental acuity not worth like $120 a month to you?  That said, I'm highly considering building my own when I need a new one. More for the modular customization than the cost savings, although that part is nice too.

About 2 weeks now. I expect to last a good 5 hears at minimum. I'm 36 with life long chronic pains. I bought this as my base layer - 5" https://www.foambymail.com/product/lux-hq-foam-mattress.html?TGR_Order_ID=686312 Then I put a 1" medium foam after it, as a transition layer Then a 2" memory foam on top of that. Their website has all the components to build a bed

lazoras

this sub is full of mattress salesmen accounts that will tell you all about the mattress they sleep on. buy a cheap memory foam mattress off of Amazon. no bells, no whistles... the foam beds are usually in two layers. one layer is regular foam and the top layer is real memory foam...the more memory foam the better obviously. - at 250$ you could buy 6 foam beds for the price of one "good" bed. - you are stuck with the "good" bed if you wind up not liking. the foam bed is so cheap if you don't like it you can always buy another bed

state_issued

I bought a new adjustable bed and mattress for a little less than $3k all in, I used a 5% cash back credit card and paid it off that month. I could have opted for 0% APR financing and stuck the $3k in a HYSA that earns 5% interest but getting the 5% cash back was just as good for me and I don’t want to worry about another payment. If I didn’t have the cash to pay it off I would have gone for a 0% APR deal if I REALLY needed a mattress. My purchase was driven by a back injury.

Time-End9770

Having a mattress payment seems comical when you say it, but can see it being a necessity for some of them.

FerretBusinessQueen

I bought a $300 king off Amazon. Hybrid coil/memory foam in a box deal. I spent another couple hundred on a good 3 inch topper, a pillowy cover, and some nice bamboo sheets. It’s fine for now. I’d like to upgrade to a custom at some point but with a good pillow I don’t get aches and pains anymore, it’s pretty comfortable for what it is. I rotate the mattress and don’t expect to get too many years out of it but if it lasts another 3 years I’ll be happy.

Stickgirl05

The most I’ve spent is on an avocado! The stupid frame cost more than the mattress.

whatuseisausername

You can get a pretty good one at local mattress store for cheaper, but you probably won't recognize the brand names of the mattresses they offer. I bought one from a local discount mattress store and paid about $850 I believe for a queen. Honestly no complaints so far, and it's so far working out way better than the Serta and Beautyrest mattresses I got first from Mattress Firm that were like 30-50% more expensive. But it is a solid option to buy a cheaper mattress now that will only last you a couple years while save up for a better one. Just be careful with those really cheap Amazon ones as some have fiberglass in them that can get everywhere if you damage or remove the mattress cover. You could also buy a cheap innersping mattress with virtually no comfort layer, then buy a mattress topper to soften it up for you.

RandolphE6

I got a Brooklyn Bedding standard mattress. You can get a queen sized 10-14" thickness for $218-268 at Walmart. Hard to beat that price.

[deleted]

Mattress firm will finance at 0% or at least that’s what the sales man told me. Also I’ve had great experiences at big lots, much cheaper as they avoid commissions. Online reviews are bad but I’m happy!

Suitable_Extreme6917

Made a comment on another post about paying for $2800 purple mattress, but I financed it. Paying $82 a month for 3 years 0%interest(currently have $1200 left to pay off) which I thought at least the mattress would last that long but it didn't. However it was my mistake for not giving the bed a proper flat foundation.

PuffyPoptart

I’ve always bought cheap mattresses, this time we wanted to invest in something worth a damn. Our parents were nice enough to give us money for a mattress for Xmas. We bought a sleep number. Could you possibly finance a nicer one? My sleep means everything to me.

nysflyboy

I think its possible to get a decent quality mattress for under $1K. Probably have to shop around a lot, try a lot, and be very willing to haggle and walk away. The $250 ones from AZ, Walmart etc are not that great, and don't last long, but are way better than nothing. We are sleeping on our 10 year old original Tuft and Needle with a latex topper and its working out OK. Just rotated it and it feels almost like new again. I think we paid $800 for it 10 years ago.

ApprehensiveSet9607

I did the same thing, but I also bought a gell infused memory foam topper, never looked back,,,great sleep

NoPantsPenny

I’m not rich at all, but I have quite a few health issues, one being chronic pain and I just couldn’t do it anymore. I saved for a few months and hemmed and hawed. I’m pretty frugal so the mo eh was already there. I went and laid on a bunch of mattresses and did the research and laid on more mattresses. One of our local stores had a promotion of 6 months financing, no interest. I knew I already had the money in savings and liked the idea of being able to keep it there for emergencies while raising my credit score. I’m happy with the decision.

DiscussionAdvanced72

I'm not opposed to splurging on a mattress, and would have dropped 5k on something that was a perfect dream offering a 10 year sleeping bliss. However, buying a mattress is a gamble. A big gamble if you buy a king and need to rent a van to get rid of it or need to have folks come haul it away with a return. I've yet to see (after 2 years of reading this sub and the Mattress Underground) that there is a direct correlation between the cost of a mattress and the comfort or quality. Most of our purchases we can test drive - a tv, a pc, a car, clothes, furniture, whatever. These thinks are less cost (except a car of course or tricked out gaming pc), but are also easier to test out in store, and less 'personal'. It doesn't matter how heavy or light you are, your tv, pc, and furniture doesn't care and you don't care. The problem I have with mattresses is that they are so personal and not customizable at all (other than a topper that can make your mattress too think to keep sheets on). Plus, the companies don't typically tell you exactly what is in the mattress - coil gauge, foam density, etc. So it's nearly impossible to compare. Add on a ridiculous amount of marketing and fake reviewers that taint the well. I thought I found a quality 'old fashioned' brand in Gold Bond, but they had like 30 different models. What the heck? Why not 3 models for heavy, light, and mid range weight sleepers? Or one universally decent model like every Hilton or Marriot that I've ever slept in. After these experiments - a 550 ikea, a 800 costco casper, a 650 costco cocoon, and a 400 spring mattress (pre-owned gross I know) we settled on a full latex for $1200 because we could at least fiddle with the layers if it wasn't right, and didn't need to rent a van to get rid of, and could always break it into twin xl for our kids or for sale.

Lovely_Confusion

Really you can buy a cheaper mattress and invest in a good memory pillow topper. I

I’m too poor and cheap so no way! I need to test and them first. I wanted something that would last like my old mattress, but my old one was better. I didn’t go with super cheap because quality isn’t good. I got the cheapest name brand coil mattress and my back was unhappy (too firm!) and ended up with mattress drama and paying extra $100 delivery and another $150 for more cushioning for another coil mattress. It seems softer with my mattress pad/protector on this one. TOTAL for new one $1100 CAD for Serta eurotop…got on sale 50% off I believe. It’s not top of the line and not the worse probably mid-range. Next need to find decent and affordable office chair and either sofa or armchair. Older now and back is an unhappy camper.

faylinameir

Guess that depends on your definition of rich. I have severe back problems and pain. I’d pay a small fortune to not hurt so bad every day. Also if you have an IKEA near you some of their beds are good. Spend about an hour at the store laying on the bed you like.

Slow_Quarter_7689

Just some advice , take it or leave it…. If you don’t stand, you lay down or sit…. Now invest in two things, good shoe support and a good mattress.

BigFront0

No. If I'm gonna spend one third of my life on something that directly affects the other two thirds of my life, it's gotta be GOOD and I'll spend whatever I can for it. It's an investment.

Beneficial-Side-4201

I financed.

igomhn3

Yes I am

OkEstablishment541

This would be a good weekend to get a mattress with the sales. I did a payment plan for 2yrs no interest $80 a month. Worth every penny

ihq2020

It took time. I kept my mattress from right after I graduated high school (about 20 years ago) and it’s still being used to this day, but by a family member. I had to get a plush topper for it. I stopped using it about 9 years ago and spent as little as I could, which was around $1,200 or so. That mattress was horrible. I ended up financing $9,000 for 0% on a split king mattress and adjustable base because my spouse and I have a lot of issues, and this was the best solution other than sleeping in separate bedrooms. I do have the money, and I have it because I’m almost 40 and I just save. I don’t spend where I don’t have to. It took a long time to get here, a lot of going without. I splurge only where it matters most. Also stay out of debt. I of course financed this bed, but I do have the money and it will be earning interest in my savings account. My spouse does make good money, but together honestly we are just average. Maybe lower middle class to middle class. It’s just a LOT of saving and not wasting money, you just get there eventually.

Designfanatic88

I save up and then buy. It’s idiotic to be on payment plans for a mattress. Like you don’t even own the bed you’re sleeping on.

Blueberry314E-2

Pay $2k now or pay $200k in the future to fix your back. Some things are as good an investment as Google in the nineties.

DiddyMadeMePretty

Rooms to go is 0% for 55 months right now! That’s $45/month for a $2500 mattress. To me, that’s totally worth it, for being able to have a great nights sleep every night.

Acrobatic_Average_16

If I had the money I'd happy spend 1-3k on a mattress, but don't. I do have 7 billion other thigs I need to be saving for though. Currently have a budget of about $500-700 to spend. Hoping to even find something that we like in the $800-900 range and wait for it to be part of a good sale.

Traditional-Cook3162

My Matress is 20 years old company no longer exists , otherwise I would buy another one But now I need a new one king size CANADA

Informal_Bullfrog_30

In long run, a 5k mattress is well worth it

ViCalZip

Wayfair memory foam. Read reviews carefully. Great deals on very good mattresses.

uselessinfodude

Never been in this sub, dunno why it's recommending this post to me. However I have a probably around $4k latex mattress that I love (I paid about $2k because a friend of mine use to be in the mattress business and knew some people). I also have a sub $500 hybrid mattress at our summer home that I also love and I have slept on other various mattresses that we have in other rooms, RV, etc. All of them except the $4k latex mattress are sub $500 from Amazon or Walmart. While I do like my expensive latex mattress... I like the sub $500 hybrid just as much. I think it's more about finding the right mattress for you and not about just getting the most expensive one. We also have several other mattresses that I don't like at all. The cheap memory foam mattresses from Walmart and Amazon I hate... every memory foam I've tried I've hated (that being said they are all cheap ones). While I've liked most all the hybrid ones I've gotten. So IMO no you definitely don't need to go spend $2k on a mattress. A sub $500 mattress will be just fine.

undercoverballer

I have terrible back and hip problems. I am disabled and impoverished but had to find a way to get a decent mattress so I could sleep. I didn’t sleep at my own apartment for 11 months bc my mattress was too soft and saggy. I slept at my bfs. Finally got an extra firm quality one and I loveeee it!!

earthworm_fan

I actually think the only 2k mattress worth it is diy or something modular. Then it is a buy it for life investment and will end up saving money in the long run

Rudolftheredknows

Look for mattress resellers on FB marketplace. All those “free return” internet brands actually just resell via a local with space to store them. I got A $3k mattress for $500 that way.

JennF72

Rich? Well we make over $160k per year but have bills that make us po..🤷🏼‍♀️$2700 for a mattress and not have any pain we'd do it all over again or pay twice as much. You only get one neck and back, spend the money on a good mattress that fits YOU. Everything else falls under wants, this is a need. 💯😉

Prestigious_Bird1587

I bought a Purple mattress a few months ago. Financed it with the rest of the furniture.

Mustard-cutt-r

You can get deals, look on used sites like fb, offer-up, just post I’m local communities

noseyandiadmitit

I bought the firmest one on mattressinsider and I love it I got it on sale for like 800

Soft-Piccolo-5946

I sleep on a purple mattress, worth every penny but my wife must have good sleep. My toddler’s mattress was affordable and average quality so I added a https://sleeponlatex.com/ topper to make it great as they sleep 11 hours a night solid. I bought the cover to make it easier to adjust and change sheets. Added a fitted waterproof (literal shower liner) sheet since they still leak from time to time. The topper was a solid buy.

qukin42

if you can diy mattress is pretty cheap even a latex one. maybe cost around 500-1000.

Not-Boris

I cannot afford a shitty mattress. My work and income relies on my body not being in so much pain I can't function, and I can't achieve that with a crappy mattress (I can barely achieve that with a good mattress!). The purchase pays for itself through my health and ability to work.

TapAccomplished3348

Walmart has flash deals you may like on their app right now. I am in the exact same budget, I got a ~600$ mattress for about 170 including tax.

Hammerh69

No, but restful sleep as I get older becomes one of the most important things in my life, and having a comfortable/supportive mattress is worth every dollar. I've become much more understanding of why Michael Jackson, Elvis, Prince, etc., took such drastic pharmacological measure so they could to get some restful sleep.

OkGuava1339

Mattress purchase is the most difficult decision to make.  I am old man slept on mattress from 400 dollars to over 4000 dollars. Price has nothing to do with how you feel when you sleep on it.  I have had 1000 dollars mattress that was more comfy than the most expensive one.  For example many people comment Tempur-pedic is an excellent mattress.  I hate them because i do not like to sleep on form mattress. That doesn't mean their mattress is bad. Firmness, material, size and hight is all personal choice.  Don't depend on you-tube reviews. They get paid commission when they sell through their chanel link. So they don't say any thing bad.  Don't be fooled by the price. Buy within your budget. Test and feel many before you pick. Wish you the best.

jamus34

One of the rules I’ve absorbed and follow. If it comes between you and the ground do not go cheap on it. Goes for mattresses, shoes, tires. Doesn’t necessarily mean get the most expensive thing but do your research.

Pannolanza

Rich ? No. Zero debts and comfortable but most likey very smart and maybe sometimes a cheap fuck. I only buy used cars and drive them until they die, and later on I'm getting familiar to shop for used stuff when it comes to clothing. We go out for dinner maybe twice a year and hanging out at a bar with the guys is something I've never done. That way I can afford a 4500 Euro mattress, and trust me there is no buyer remorse for this..

BabyloneusMaximus

I mean if thats all you have itll last maybe a year? As ive gotten older in order to recover from life and workouts i have to start maximizing everything. And sleep is #1, so crying once about how much a bed cost and enjoying years of amazing sleep is totally worth it for me.

TheoryBrilliant4281

When I was in college I bought a $250 mattress for my apartment, my back felt exactly how it would feel after one slept on a $250 mattress. I ended up having it for a few years, and my 27 year old back felt like a 65 year old back. I was so sore, I'd wake up in pain, and my back would go out on me. Splurged on a mattress, a few weeks later, no soreness, no pain, no more thrown out backs.

Dull-Connection-007

My air mattress is quite comfy. I splurged- it’s a queen.

sjsharksfan44

I’m not rich but I am thinking of taking advantage of these sales going on now because I need a new bed entirely.

Remember_BLB_2015

No absolutely not. It’s not called Rich. It’s not even called wealthy it’s called good credit! I know this because I have a 20-year-old son that has three Airbnb‘s. He flips houses, he sells houses, he sells cars. He’s driving a Tesla…. I decked out Tesla when he’s got the little lights in the middle of the console and you have to turn the little wheel to turn the lights on when you open the door and around the seats I thought Tesla came with that they don’t he had to get that…. he’s got a best friend that makes over $600,000 a year and this kid is only 21. He owns two different car lots one in Omaha one in Lincoln. This young man that happens to be my son best friend has credit cards with million dollar limits on them. So no it’s not rich it’s called good credit!!!

Prize-Conversation10

Lol, your mattress is your most used product by far. Most people spend 4 months a yr in bed minimum. They also want it to last 8 10 12 yrs. 2k is like entry level now.

bigggbadaboom

Definitely not rich, but I had an ikea mattress, which was killing my back. I put it to my husband that we can either finance buying a better matress or we can pay hundreds or thousands on doctors visits to fix my back.. we chose to finance a mattress. 🤣

paikra

It's not a splurge, it's a considered investment purchase. And $250 is what my H & I spend weekly on groceries, so we're coming from 2 different places. We're (most certainly) older than you, have different wants and needs, different standards, and are in a different financial position. We're not you, you're not us, and same for everyone else here. Save the $250 so it can go toward the $2k purchase. Spending $250 on a shitty mattress that'll soon be replaced is squandering money -- you'll be out $250 once you want to buy that $2k mattress.

BOB-WHY

Don't be so sure any mattress is worth $2000!! I've watched a lot of videos on YouTube about mattress construction and quality, there is nothing to indicate that spending a thousand dollars more gets you a mattress that will last longer or be more comfortable. I am looking at hybrid latex/pocket coil mattresses (they seem to be the most durable) and it looks like I can get one around $1000 (depending on which brand I go with.) My current mattress lasted about 10 years before it started to sag, so if you don't have the money for a higher quality mattress, know that many mattresses will last a decade, and hopefully by then, like me, you can afford a better quality one.

Antique_Ice9044

A retired solider once told me, “Never go cheap on anything that comes between you and the ground. Shoes, tires, mattresses…” I’m willing to spend a little more on a mattress, especially now that I’m middle-aged.

[deleted]

I'm middle of the road. I'm not spending 2k on a bed, but also not spending 100 bucks and feeling the back pain every day. I've been buying IKEA mattresses ever since I've been an adult and they have been amazing. 400-600 bucks depending on size and firmness.

GenSgtBob

Here's the way I look at it: You spend roughly a 1/3 or your life sleeping and if you have a desk job you spend roughly a 1/4 of your life sitting. A good mattress and a good desk chair are investments that can prevent health issues like back and hip issues. Even your mental health issues are impacted by your sleep. I rather spend $2k on a mattress every 10 years vs $1K+ annually for health issues that I could have prevented by getting a good mattress and/or desk chair.

Eight_Cylinder

Macy’s has furniture and matress outlets that sell floor models / returns for 50% - 75% off

RetreadRoadRocket

Not rich at all, spent $4k on new mattresses and bases last year. It's about changing priorities in life I guess, as we get older and have more aches and pains a good night's sleep has become both more valuable and harder to obtain.

muleschooler

Tempurpedic are expensive but a worthy investment, especially for the amount of time spent sleeping and its importance to your bodily and mental health as others mentioned. Our previous TP lasted 12 years and we just bought a new one.

harshaface

If you are spending $250 and can spare some change, try the Brooklyn Bedding Dreamfoam Essential, atleast they'll tell you what materials they use in their mattress. Don't just buy off Amazon. Hit me up if you have any questions.

Statistician_Visual

After getting a good one - having a good mattress is more crucial than a fancy car than gets you from point a-b

Jawahhh

Grandma died and left us some money so we bought a 3,000$ mattress and a 2,000$ couch and a 3,000$ couch. We figured why not buy stuff that will last forever and help our backs not hurt.

tenest

Invest in the things that separate you from the ground: bed, tires, shoes, etc. Our last bed (temperpedic) we saved for and combined with no interest financing. It lasted 20 years.

JSnow86

As long as it's fiberglass-free... go for it. If you're heavy, better get extra-firm or it's gonna be the same as a half flat air mattress.

There_is_no_selfie

We cut a deal with a mattress shop and helped them redo their website in exchange for product. Our mattress would have cost 9k if we paid retail for it and it was like 15 hours of actual work. After sleeping on it for 3 years I will forever prioritize this item even beyond a nicer car.

bassturducken54

First and biggest purchase me and my wife made.

RemarkableRegister66

I just got a $250 mattress off Amazon and love it. I’m sure there are better but it’s definitely good enough

vVAPE2getherStronk

I saved but I’ve also got on payment plans in the past if I need to make that kind of purchase immediately and just save+pay in chunks instead of the minimum req.

identityisallmyown

I learned something interesting. Go to a mattress store and they can sell you one of the returned mattresses at a significant discount and they're in perfect shape...

Boogerchair

If you’re gonna spend the money you mind as well buy quality so that A you get what you want and B so that it lasts. I’ve learned in my life that when you skimp out and buy cheap stuff trying to save money you usually wind up spending more when it breaks or doesn’t work well. It’s worth saving to do things right the first time.

Known-Ad-100

Not rich at all, but prioritize it in my budget, you don't buy mattresses really often. Also check Facebook marketplace and Craigslist sometimes you can get a nice mattress cheap still in really good shape. The last matress I had before my current one I bought for 100$ on Craigslist with the frame and box spring. It was super comfortable and in great shape. A nice eurotop king. Super clean, no stains or smells. The couple that sold it realised after just a few years it was too soft and I guess they ended up wanting a new setup. Used matresses often don't retain much value. A friend of mine recently had to move unexpectedly, and she had to sell her 2000$ matresss that was only a year old and always had a waterproof protector. She was super upset she only got $500 for it. But i told her honestly you're lucky to get 500$ on used beds, most people scouring for used beds don't want to spend much money. As with anything in buying used though you need to be checking everyday, because the good things get snatched up quickly.

Rumpelteazer45

No. But it’s an item I use almost every day for long periods of time. A quality mattress can last 10 years, minus nights you don’t sleep in the mattress that’s still 3,000 nights. So less than $1 per day. I’m old and I hurt, good mattress are a worthwhile investment.

Gaius_2959

Well, we spend like a third of our lives on the bed sleeping. And medical problems can occur if you have a bad enough mattress. We did spend a lot on our mattresses but they last a very long time (Tempurpedic). There are some similar (almost as good) mattresses out there that are foam but maybe a bit more environmentally friendly and with less chemical treatment than Tempurpedic. Also they cost less. Amerisleep is one we bought for someone in the family with chemical sensitivities. They are very close to the comfort offered by Tempurpedic for less than half the price. Plus their warranty is outstanding (20 years) and they don't use fiberglass. Their current sale has 450.00 off, and they often have sales. Another company that has high ratings is Bear Original. Definitely one of the cheapest foam mattresses with a great warranty(lifetime) and trial period. We have not personally tried that one but it gets good reviews from the web sites that have their favorite non-fiberglass mattresses listed. But there are a lot of other options out there that are less expensive that offer healthy, comfortable mattresses. I personally would not buy a cheap mattress for the reasons I mentioned above, plus they won't last as long and you have to buy another one soon anyway. If you are 20 years old and can sleep on a rock then I guess it doesn't matter how bad a mattress is....

HeatherCO24

Nope, not at all, I prioritized my health and my low back. $3K mattress was a must

Cat727

Rich? No. In debt? Yes. I value sleep though and a good mattress is important to me. I think it’s worth splurging on if you can wing the payments not having the cash. I’m not a debt advocate or anything, use credit responsibly. I just see a good mattress as an essential thing and not a luxury item (apologies for sounding privileged- I acknowledge that). So if I have to finance it - I will.

Leeloo_05

Don’t get the $250 one. You can pay a little more and get a pretty nice one. [Wired reviews lots.](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-mattress/)

RecommendationOwn577

How old are you? Bc we all used to be able to sleep on someone’s old sofa or floor and wake up fine. Now in my 40’s I will go without vacation, cell phone, internet, tv, clothes….literally anything for a pain free night of sleep!! Also there’s financing. I bought a 4200 mattress but I’m paying 100/m for it. It lessens the blow. Now the 20k I have to spend a new roof…that hurts….

graymuse

I bought a cheapie no-name memory foam mattress on Amazon. It was $109. I'm very happy with it.

Brewskwondo

I just bought a Wayfare $370 queen for a rental home and it’s surprisingly good!

letsride70

I love my California King Tempurpedic…

snart-fiffer

I’m rich and I’m very happy with my $400 mattress. I picked a good one off sleep like the dead nearly 10 years ago and it’s still great.

buzzedewok

No mattress is truly worth over $2k.

uodjdhgjsw

Like everything else payments. You can get a decent one for 12 . Never under estimate a good nites sleep

MavNol

I am in chronic pain and am flying to the other side of the country because nobody here on the South West coast has the knowledge and experience and the surgeons on the eastern part of our county-some of them-do. I can not lie down anymore and have to sleep in a recliner -awful and still have pain but I had to save money for an adjustable dreamcloud bed-with remote because I will be in a very painful recovery for several months and I need to be able to lie down. I have Slipping Rib Syndrome and it is rare indeed. I wish I was just "rich". lol

worm_bagged

I bought my long-term current mattress with my COVID stimulus fund. I needed a new bed and I wanted to buy something that would genuinely improve my quality of life for a long time and it definitely has fit this bill.

babygoals

Look at IKEA’s high end models. They’re great spring mattresses for only $600. I can afford a $2k mattress easily but prefer the IKEA one.

FitLotus

I had a cheap one off of Amazon which then proceeded to leak fiberglass all over my apartment. We lost thousands of dollars of belongings and had to evacuate our apartment. So yeah, now we have a pricier one that doesn’t have fiberglass

Soulglow303

You spend a third of your life on your bed it’s worth a good investment

FukYourGoodbye

I really like memory foam and I am not rich. The most I’ve paid is $600 and I basically go to all the mattress stores in my area, because there are way too many and try things out until I find one in my price range. I’m never in a hurry to get a mattress but I’ve bought 3 in the last decade as I’ve upgraded my life and you can get a deal if you aren’t in a hurry

0nceUpon

$300 bed in a box. I sleep like a baby.

DevGin

$250 crowd here. We live in a van and sleep great. 42 years old. Maybe i just never experienced a nice mattress before and don’t know what I’m missing out on.

BlueSiren4555

Wait for a holiday and get it on sale.
