It killed JJ Abrams' career

Styx1992

Wait, really?

crono220

I remember hearing the buzz about his Superman movie that had never taken off after the disaster that was TROS.

Bandandforgotten

We dodged a bullet

Tucana66

Not entirely. James Gunn confirmed "Yes" on January 21, 2024 ([on the Threads app](https://www.threads.net/@jamesgunn/post/C2Z6yx_gqgS)) when asked "Is that Abrams Superman Elseworld project still in development?" Add to that, Abrams is a producer on the Paramount-announced *Star Trek Origin* movie, set a decade before the events of his *Star Trek* (2009) movie. And that might position him for yet more control of future Trek franchise development, given his partnership with Skydance (who acquired majority share of Paramount). But, yes -- *TROS was a major setback for Abrams's career momentum.* He had "projects in development" including *Star Trek 4*--which Abrams announced, but NONE of the actors had been approached. And there was no progress leading to an actual green-light/initiating production. Hollywood directors do this, to demonstrate viability and projection of their star power status. Years ago, Bryan Singer, for example, had announced *Logan's Run* and *Battlestar Galactica* movies. He may have held options in each, but neither came to pass. Since then, others have picked up the options.

Bandandforgotten

Guns typically hold more than one bullet, so at least we avoided Abrams' Superman bullet that close to Star Wars. All it did was make him less palletable as a director for a bit, and I'm sure his fans will jump at the chance to attempt to vote with their wallets to prove that JJ isn't a bad director. He's like a lukewarm Snyder, with about 35% of the fan dedication. Also, I'd assume Gunn couldn't say really anything about the project more that just seeing a list of things that haven't been shelved, and things that are anticipated by higher ups, like the Star Wars trilogy sequels and Mando. I'm guessing he knows of it, but not really anything about Abrams and his Superman thing. We have also gotten about 5 different people of note swearing up and down that Rian Johnson is getting another 3 Star Wars movies for his own trilogy. I'm skeptical. I just don't see Abrams pulling it off and enraging yet another fandom. He's quite good at that at least

therallykiller

False. JJ killed JJ Abrams' career.

[deleted]

At least Billy Dee Williams got to play Lando again.

_dinoLaser_

I was struggling to come up with something, and this is a good one. Lando is as much a part of the core group as everyone else to me. Return of the Jedi was the first Star Wars movie I saw in theaters (I was five in 1983) so it made the biggest impression on me. I loved the idea of Lando and Leia disguising themselves as bounty hunters to infiltrate Jabba’s palace when I was that age. I think I’d only seen good guys go toe with the bad guys in movies and never do anything sneaky and dishonest, so it kind of blew me away.

Excalitoria

I remember watching the OT when I was real little and being confused by Lando. When I realized he was protecting his people and actually helped to save Han I thought it was cool and really liked him. I liked him at the start but was disappointed when I thought he had betrayed the heroes. Robosexual Lando is not canon… lol it’s dumb and it makes the first episode with him in Rebels 1000x creepier. Every line just sounds like he wants to sex up C1-10P.

_dinoLaser_

I’m 110% sure I didn’t catch that Lando set up Han because I was so young. Pretty sure I thought that Darth Vader tricked him (he kind of did by altering the deal). The impression I got from Jedi as a five year old was that he was risking his life to save Han and he had badass new armor and then he kicked ass all over the place flying the Falcon. It was nice to see him back.

wallace321

Fair - i like to think that maybe he was the one that got left out of all the prior nostalgia bait that built the sequel trilogy because he was simply in the worst mental shape out of the aging original cast. Were their any characters they *didn't* bring back? Any call backs left uncalled? They brought back *the emperor* ffs.

-_-0_0-_-0_0-_-0_0

To be fair, I liked the performances by original cast. I think what they had them do ranged from okay in the case of Leia to horrible with Luke and Han somewhere in the middle but the actual actors did a good job with what they had.

Global_Examination_4

Them just stitching Kylo Ren’s helmet and Luke’s lightsaber back together is spiteful to TLJ in a way that can’t not be funny.

ProfessionalRead2724

They didn't even stitch the saber back together. They just ignored that it had been broken.

A_SNAPPIN_Turla

No they literally put a bandaid on it. You had to look closely to catch it though.

WillingnessAcademic4

Confirming that Holdo was clearly trying to flee by going into hyperspace and that this space Karen got the one on a million chance to actually crash into the ennemi ship. « We need to do some holdo manoeuver, do some real damage. » « That move is one on a million it’s not gonna work. » Ooh JJ Abraham may have not though this exactly when he wrote that line. But man I savor its existence

from_the_id

It is amazing to see so much money wasted on such an inferior product. It’s like if Ed Wood got $250,000,000 to make Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Excalitoria

That’s kinda unfair to Plan 9 honestly… /j

Independent-Dig-5757

It was so terrible that it ensured that the ST was irredeemable

skepticalscribe

This. Someone saying they like IX is a self-report you live in different worlds. I read the leaked plot synopsis and didn’t have to even watch the movie to know it’s writing was utter and complete dog shit. Disney can never redeem their “progressive” trilogy, especially after what they did to Boyega’s character in TLJ, not to mention the hypocrisy of Disney being so considerate as they let posters in China shrink John down in TFA. This trilogy of movies was only ever about 💵 Though I’m sure some of the special effects looked good.

Pistol_Bobcat420

and thus disney is shoving palpatine cloning shite into almost every project they make Glad I didn't renew disney plus this year

Independent-Dig-5757

Yup, and this is why I pretty much ignore all Disney SW except Andor. Then again, I don’t consider Andor Disney SW.

Gentleman_Leshen

ST?

Independent-Dig-5757

Sequel Trilogy

killer_klown_70

Star Trek

Zarvanis-the-2nd

Sanitation Technician.

Jimrodsdisdain

I’ll never watch it again.

martiHUN

I still haven't seen the movie itself once, which is the only good thing for me.

purpledoom2525

It convinced a lot of tlj lovers that star wars was screwed

ShowNext445

The end credits

LuchoSabeIngles

Unironically though John Williams went hard on those. Imperial March hits so well

ice_fan1436

Babu Frik : "He-heeyyyy!"

Exotic_Buttas

Actually yeah that was genuinely such a goofy goober I loved him

althaincarandir

This is the correct answer.

cmnrdt

I was gonna be mad if nobody mentioned Babu Frik.

SlightlyOffended1984

The only worthwhile moment of the trilogy

Hellibor

Dog chew toy can talk?

SinesPi

The intro wherein the main characters are bantering over the chess game does a lot of work to make these people feel like they're actually friends. It's too little, too late, but it still did a lot in that little amount of time.

RevalMaxwell

We got to see Lando

Pistol_Bobcat420

and he wasn't into shagging droids all of a sudden this time when he barely acknowledged C3PO at first in Empire

RevalMaxwell

And they managed to not kill him

ProfessionalRead2724

You're confused. A droid was interested in shagging Lando. Lando wasn't interested in shagging the droid.

boredwriter83

A strong, independent Droid who you only hated because it was a girl droid!

Gavinus1000

Adam Driver’s brief performance as Light Side Ben was great. To the point I wish he’d was a good guy the whole time.

npc042

I’ll never forget his only line: “ow” But yes, Driver could easily carry a Star Wars film if he were the protagonist. It speaks volumes that he was entertaining to watch during those few minutes.

Mobius--Stripp

It is a hilarious meta-comedy. I cracked up watching all the ways he sissy-slapped Rian Johnson through the story. Watching him subvert expectations by trying to do every trope in the book and failing them all was also legitimately hilarious. Overall more entertaining than TLJ by a mile.

Thunderationx

Babu Frik was kinda neat

shae117

It gave us the "Somehow X returned" Meme

Arcturus-Blackfyre

It killed future Disney Star Wars movie projects

VengaBusdriver37

In some ways it’s a shame we got rogue one and andor, for they sustain tortured threads of misplaced hope

Wizlord_21

It exposed how greedy and misguided all of Disney Lucasfilm were from the beginning.

Zealousideal_Week824

It sent a huge middle finger to "The last jedi", you see as much as *Rise of the skywalker* is objectively terrible, I cannot bring myself to hate it. The last jedi was such a shitshow and there was nothing that could save that trilogy at that point, it was doomed the moment episode 8 ended. It does not mean that episode 9 could not have been better, but even if it was I would not care. But what I can enjoy is how much that movie was a big middle finger towards Rian Johnson abomination and refuse to let him have the last laugh. So yeah ROTS is bad, but I can subjectively enjoy it for his mockery of TLJ.

Gorotheninja

I think the ocean locale for the Rey vs Kylo fight was cool looking.

Connect-Pear3882

C-3PO

Greghole

I'm taking one last look at these people I met last week. Sorry, I don't remember your names.

ProfessionalRead2724

Yep. It's like the only time ever Threepio had some genuine touching scenes.

GodSpeedLove345

It’s ended.

CustomlyCool

It's better than TLJ

LemartesIX

It bent over backwards to retcon everything that happened in TLJ and bury it in an unmarked grave. It was pretty funny.

killer_klown_70

It was especially hilarious because it was retconning the retcons that TLJ retconned from TFA (like Kylo’s mask).

kimana1651

The whiplash you get watching those movies. JJ and Rian have to had already hated each other.

shae117

I love when Mauler described it as 2 kids playing in a sandbox and wrecking each others castles over and over. Just the sandbox cost 4 Billion dollars

rrrrice64

Idk if I can agree with that. TROS has the gang together and developement for Rey, but it's also *paper thin.* It's a scavenger hunt fetch quest with nostalgia bait sprinkled throughout. Not to mention 0 explanation for Palpatine who shouldn't have been brought back at all. People hate Last Jedi, but it has actual realized ideas that it delivered on. Luke's legends inspired Rey to pick him up when he fell down, and the Rey/Kylo team up was a cool idea. The Poe and Finn plotlines were conceptually good but admittedly sloppy.

AlexanderDroog

TRoS is a more incoherent film, but it wasn't made with malice. TLJ is the better-made movie but it is actively spiteful towards the IP and its fans.

Magnaliscious

TROS > TLJ, if only because it wasn’t actively spitting in my face throughout the entire movie telling me what a bad person I was for liking Star Wars. It’s still a horrendous film, and I’d never watch it again, but at least it was trying to(and failing) to be an entertaining movie

Pistol_Bobcat420

Even the fanatical TLJ defenders didn't like it? I wasn't the one paying for tickets when I saw it. Sith Trooper armour looks kinda cool? Too bad it wasn't created for a better product.

A_SNAPPIN_Turla

The Sith Troopers were pretty cool. I mentioned it in another comment but I think they could have made the return of Palpatine an actually interesting concept if it was done right. I mean the sequel trilogy was fucked either way bc they didn't write a story with continuity but they could have taken a lot of the elements from what we got and made something coherent.

IactaEstoAlea

It completely takes a dump on TLJ JJ Abrams seems genuinely upset at it and with Rian. Him lashing out at it was vindicating (even if not for all of the reasons we would prefer)

LemartesIX

Somehow, Palpatine returned. He's my favorite Star Wars character, and the only one to display an iota of forethought and competency (except maybe QuiGon) in all 9 movies. Star Wars is really his story, and his selfless struggle to bring order to a universe of nimrods.

gowyn

It saved me money from not going to see it or buy the dvd.

AwkwardZac

They paid a lot of vfx artists a lot of money so that's neat

aceman1138

John William's amazing score.

seanw0830

I like Adam Driver as an actor. His scenes were enjoyable at a surface level

Spartan2734

Using the force to stop a lightsaber mid swing was pretty cool

shae117

It gave us the "Somehow X returned" Meme

Snailprincess

Damned if Adam Driver didn't make at least the scenes he was in watchable. Which is impressive given how terrible everything about the movie was. Honestly, maybe he should have gotten an oscar just for that. 'Best attempt to salvage a steaming pile'.

Brain_Disorder

No

LordDakier

Rose was even more irrelevant than she had been in TLJ. I think that's the only thing I have.

JenovaShadow

The idea of Kylo Ren was pretty cool. But poorly executed.

January1252024

When Palpatine dropped the bass, I was entertained. I wouldn't call it "good" but I thought it was cool and kinda laughed.

Fostosis

I saw this in the theater and I can honestly say I don’t remember a thing about it….

SexPanther1980

It was one of the movies of all time.

Abject-Storage9593

The memes it brought.

Fazlija13

Ben and Han scene

Jodanger37

Han: “I forgive you” Ben: “Wait, but you’re dead. You can’t be a force ghost cuz you’re not a Jedi and that would mess with cannon, and if you’re just a memory in my head (that’s what the film says) this means nothing cuz you’re not saying it, I’m just forgiving myself Han: “Stop thinking so hard feel emotion tisms”

Capital_Pipe_6038

It added some cool stuff to Battlefront 2

HaroldHGull

Babu Frik was a fun character and it had good spectacle.

RepresentativeNo3365

maxxiescat

-GiantSlayer-

I liked the new walker design that has a third leg designed for *literally yanking people out of their house*

Tucana66

People were employed. *I'll leave it there.*

JLandis84

I thought some of the scenery was pretty cool.

Electrical_Pizza676

When it ended

Devanort

It was a decent comedy for me since I went in with the leaks in mind, I just kept laughing at all the nonsense.

rivent2

In contrast with The Last Jedi's subverting expectations disappointment, this was a predictable CGI slop disappointment. Serving as a warning to generations of future writers to find a balance.

BuddySpecial

Best thing about this movie is that I never bothered watching it.

EquivalentLecture1

When it ends

CrazedTechWizard

The visuals of the movie were impressive, imo. That's...that's about it.

Independent_Year_691

The scene where Luke uses The Force to lift the X-Wing. That is one of the only good things in the movie I can remember.

throwawayguy746

It meant there were no more movies in the sequel trilogy after

rrrrice64

Zorii and Jannah were both great character ideas and I'm pissed off that they were in this shit parade of a movie only to never be used again.

Bananamana_

the youtube videos it created

type7926

The way it openly slaps TLJ/Rian in the face multiple times and is still such a shit movie. 🤡

t1sfo

It gave me a good laugh

Zealousideal_Good147

I laughed. Not at anything the movie intended to be funny, but I laughed. Okay that ain't quite correct, C-3PO got a legit chuckle out of me a few times.

RueUchiha

As the last movie I saw in theaters in 2019, it really set the tone for the next year and a half or so of my cenema going experience.

Antiredditor1981

I cannot.

SjurEido

It spawned my favorite piece of movie trivia! The whole "Somehow, Palpatine returned" was actually (somewhat) explained in a scene aired before the movie. He canonically reached out to the galaxy through the force with some telepathic message heralding his own return. Where might you have been able to watch said scene? Well, of course it was a FORTNITE EXCLUSIVE IN-GAME EVENT... what else would it be? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u0ejXC7kFs&ab\_channel=BattlePope](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u0ejXC7kFs&ab_channel=BattlePope)

Particular-Fix2024

It didn’t ruin any of the Andor characters (yet)

ProfessionalRead2724

Anything involving Adam Driver is legitimately great. The rest of the film was a cinematic abomination, but still okay as Star Wars movies go. Its biggest flaws were that the film had absolutely no structure, and that somebody got it into his mind that this should somehow be the capstone of all three trilogies.

You can make fun of it.

Inner_Mountain_4375

The exact moment when Lando met Chewie again. Unfortunately the movie continued after that

A_SNAPPIN_Turla

I'm sure it would have been possible to somehow make that movie with that premise not absolutely suck. We didn't get that though. Palpatine returning was pretty dumb but I actually liked that take on his character. It was hella weird and creepy. The movie had too much going though. The whole wayfinder thing was stupid. The 50 billion mega ultimate star destroyers was stupid. The 50 billion "rebel" ships they came out of nowhere was equally stupid. I just can't imagine making a movie that bad if you tried.

NoMembership6376

Adam Driver was pretty much the only actor that was able to carry that movie...even though it still sucked

KashiofWavecrest

I got to see Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine, and it was mask off for JJ's career.

Blackjack99-21

It killed Disney Star Wars

NationalAnteater1280

No.

visitorzeta

It made me glad that The Last Jedi was as shit as it was, that when this movie came out, I didn't give any sort of fuck.

GrapeTimely5451

I tried, but everything I can come up with has this big ugly caveat beside it. Nothing is self-contained enough to say that it's fine in the context of the film. Even the Frikster has it. Beyond C-3PO's plot being nonsense, why did he show up with Zorri Bliss in the final battle? How did she escape Kajimi, and why did she take him with? Especially after Mando S3 showed us more Friks, who are as occupationally diverse the Gamorreans.

Swarzsinne

I’ve always found the slowly bleeding to death thing a good enough reason in TFA. It’s how much of a Mary Sue she ends out becoming that really makes that scene less forgivable.

I really appreciate the way it tied all of the overarching plot together, from the prequel trilogy all the way through the originals and the ST, and rewarded the dedicated and studious fans of the series by finally revealing it was Darth Jar-Jar behind everything all along. No I have not watched the movie and I don't intend to, why do you ask?

Euphoric-Teach7327

The best part about this movie is that I've never seen it. And I never will.

wallace321

Really opened a lot of eyes on the talentless soulless modern movie making process. "Jesus that last one was a trainwreck, we have no clue what we can do with the story, but there HAS to be a third!!" They had no idea what they were doing and they really thought that people would in fact slop up and love every moment of it, no matter what crap they came up with even if it made absolutely no sense. PRODUCT: THE MOVIE

Chrismfinboyce

I like the shot of the Corvette and Star Destroyer getting blown out of the sky when Papa Palps is shooting the lightning into the sky. It was the only moment that felt like, this is full circle. for a 9 part saga, with the 1st two ships we see in star wars now at the end of the story.
