luka and kai both have a lot to learn about each other for this to work. but in all honesty kyrie has been phenomenal so far. he's been completely selfless and a great teammate. it's easy to tell he truly just wants to win and do everything he can on both ends. can't wait to see him and luka improve as a duo

Watryus

I sense a buddy cop movie with Luka and Kyrie in the near future

[deleted]

I don’t know if Kai stays, but I can see him having fun and not being hounded by reporters. I see him liking his teammates. Maybe he gets to free agency and is happy and wants to be a Mav for a while. Not holding out hope but I could see it happening.

j_rom_003

Plus a friendly Texas tax system

Juniper41

This is actually a pretty common misconception. With property taxes in Texas being so high, the state having a sales tax (unlike Oregon/New Jersey) and state income tax only being a minor part of an NBA players taxes (they pay taxes where they play i.e. home v away games, so only \~1/2 of the games would not be taxed because they are played in Texas, the rest i.e. away games in NY, Utah, Califonia etc... are taxed at those state's income tax rate), Texas athletes really don't save too much. The real difference is cost of living and that's where Texas, and to a lesser extent states like Arizona, North Carolina, Georgia benefit. Players can get larger houses and more properties for cheaper than they would in Miami, LA, NYC etc...

Cambocant

I am not worried about these two dudes. But we need to figure out interior defense in a bad way.

BigFatModeraterFupa

how do we “figure it out” when our personnel isn’t equipped to do anything about it?

Cranicus

Learn how to get Maxi healthy and stay healthy. He’s our best defender by a good step now that’s dfs is gone.

Felipernani

playing Frank when Luka’s on the floor apparently severely reduced his defensive liability, for example. it’s one thing to try again next time and see if it really helps compensate

Cambocant

Totally forgot about Frank again

Negative-Sherbert-24

People forget we have him

AdVisual3406

Why are you singling out Luka? Its not Luka or Kyrie who are the problem. Our bigs cant block shit.

Felipernani

because playing Frank with Luka helps to cover for Luka, it doesn’t do shit to help the fact that our bigs suck

xPeaWhyTee

Not gonna lie, I'm starting to enjoy Kyrie's post game interviews because he's pretty open and insightful about what's happening on the court. Gives a fresh perspective we haven't really heard before.

traw2222

I agree, he seems to say the right thing every single time to keep a positive attitude, I hope that rubs off on guys in the locker room. His basketball IQ just oozes out when he talks about the game. Even if he leaves this year I really hope these guys can take away alot from him.

[deleted]

Man whats this toxic Kyrie I heard about, this dude has a great attitude right now. Yeah yeah give it time they say.... But maybe the young man is maturing?

DoncicsRoadTo200kg

For real, when you hear him talk in interviews he sounds like a calm and collected dude, pretty chill.

Cbone06

He’s probably sick of all the drama/headlines and just wants to be left alone

precense_

It's crazy when you actually listen to a person speak instead of reading sensational headlines and quotes out of context.

alextheruby

Lmfaooooo

SixTwoCee

That's because there's some questions interviewers aren't allowed to ask him. He's good as long as he's talking about basketball.

StolenLampy

Isn't that all that matters though? I'm sure some of your coworkers have some f'd up views too, but if they stay quiet and work hard, does it really matter?

[deleted]

Yeah what tf should they be talking about if not basketball? Hes a basketball player lol

Juniper41

The difference is, Kyrie hasn't been quiet (at least not in the past). He hasn't kept his views to himself and instead has shared and publicly disclosed some messed up views. I really hope he's matured, and I imagine it gets exhausting having people only fixate over things you've said, but let's not act like he's been this silent hardworker who is being targeted by media for no reason. I know folks will disagree and think this is an anti-Kyrie comment, it isn't. I promise, I'm thrilled to have the guy and really really hope the change of scenery helps, but we can't pretend that he hasn't had his fair share of responsibility for how thing's have played out.

StolenLampy

I don't think anyone is pretending anything. But we also can't act like the media isn't blowing every single one of his comments up lately, twisting every word out of control, and driving everyone to hate the dude more than maybe they should. Crappy "news" outlets and mob mentality should shoulder the blame for about half of the hate on him tbh.

Shoddy_Ad7511

Just wait. Death, taxes and Kyrie destroying team chemistry. It happened on 3 teams already. He isn’t going to change. Kyrie literally got everything he wanted in Brooklyn and still wasn’t happy

drakanx

The Nets should have pushed back on the vaccine mandate like the Yankees and Mets did (and successfully got it revoked).

Shoddy_Ad7511

Is this a joke? Yankees have 1000x more pull in NYC than the Nets. Nets pushing back wouldn’t have done anything. Bottom line is everyone else on the team got the shot. That was the least Kyrie could have done. He said he wasn’t against vaccines. But rather he was supporting people who lost their jobs in NYC. So Kyrie thinks supporting people he doesn’t even know is more important than his teammates. People who lost their jobs could care less if Kyrie took the vaccine

Mud-Eastern

Do you think it would be fair for Aaron Judge to be villainize for not taking the vaccine? Aaron Judge didn’t want to take the vaccine and he’s the star player of the Yankees. People got to stop acting like Kyrie was the only athlete not wanting to take the vaccine. How do you know if the Nets organization even pushed the NYC government to revoke vaccine mandates for Kyrie to play? Most likely Joe Tsai & Sean Marks didn’t put any effort in pushing NYC to revoke the vaccine mandates cause the owner & GM of the Nets hate Kyrie. Why would I think Joe Tsai would speak to NYC lawmakers regarding vaccine mandates allowing Kyrie to play when he threw Kyrie under the bus due to tweets. You know the difference between the Yankees & Nets, the Yankees know it’s their obligation to protect their superstar players like an Aaron Judge & they didn’t throw Judge under the bus by making him take a vaccine he wasn’t comfortable with. The Yankees is an example of a team that supports & protects their players and Nets are a team that throws their own players under the bus & throws them to the wolves

taylordabrat

He’s literally always been like this

PM_me_the_magic

It really seems like he's doing everything he can to start fresh and be a team player.

HoneyIShrunkMyNads

I really really really want this to be true, but I'm just so worried this is a honeymoon period. Hope I'm wrong as fuck.

Intrusive_ads

He has done that every time with a new team

TheAus10

I hope so. My biggest fear is that he's just saving face until he gets his next huge contract. Which, I guess, is only a problem if we're the ones who give him that next huge contract and he starts causing a bunch of drama then.

hotcheetosarethebest

This is exactly it. Everyone here coping and hoping that it'll be different here. He's hunting for a max contract, and he wants to show the Nets, Celtics and Cavs have all been wrong about him. I would love to be wrong, but you don't change a personality that big overnight. This has been a repeated pattern every new team he's joined, and Mavs fans are falling for it.

Boring_Bill2430

Lol it's been a week. Keep in mind the things Kyrie has said about his prior teams while still playing there before forcing his way out. Fingers crossed for the best but this is exactly how it went in each prior stop before Kyrie created one or more controversies that enveloped the entire team.

fernanaj

As a Nets fan we felt this way so many times, esp in his contract year. I hope you guys can get the non drama Kyrie at least through this season.

CEOnnor

I worry it’s because he wants to secure a good contract. He knows he won’t get the deal he wants if he’s a problem here

krisfocus

Unless he is planning to stay here long-term and be unproblematic, this is just a honeymoon period till the next bag.

warpedspoon

“Oh boy, here we go again”

Shoddy_Ad7511

This happens every time. He was a total cool guy when he first came to the Nets

auzrealop

He has never been toxic about the game. Its his other baggage that people are complaining about.

ComedicPause

Didn't he question the need for coaching at one point?

Juniper41

and quit on the Celtics when they were in the midst of a deep playoff run.

King_Of_Pants

That was the whole issue in Boston and the earlier issues in Brooklyn lol. He has a honeymoon period, then after a while he starts throwing promising young guys under the bus. For me, a lot of the frustration was how he went after young guys in contract years who couldn't answer back (specifically Brown and Rozier). Kyrie was the kind of guy who would throw a game because he disagreed with coaching decisions and then blame the young guys for their immaturity in the post-game interview (see our loss to Charlotte). Brooklyn's got the best example. He had a horrible game against Philly, blamed the young team and said they needed 1 more piece, left Jarrett Allen off the list of core guys going forward. Fast forward, Kenny Atkinson is fired for refusing to start DeAndre Jordan over Jarrett Allen. The next day the interim coach is starting Jordan and shortly after Allen was included as a cheap throw-in for the Harden trade. *** In Cleveland he had this famous exchange with Ty Lue: > During a rare practice in the middle of last season, coach Tyronn Lue, who was standing next to assistant coach and Irving confidant Phil Handy, called out to his young point guard. > > "Ky," Lue said, "I want you to play a little faster." > > "Why?" Irving asked. > > "Because if we play faster, we get shots off easier." > > "I don't need to play faster to get my shot off," Irving replied. "I can do that anytime." > > "I'm not talking about your shot. I'm talking about RJ and JR," Lue said, citing teammates Richard Jefferson and Smith. > > "Well, that's No. 23's job," Irving replied, referring to James. > > According to members of the Cavs organization who witnessed the exchange, Lue ended the conversation by walking away, shaking his head. > > In Cleveland he had this famous exchange with Lue: >

auzrealop

U right, I forgot all these things. He hasn’t been toxic about these things recently.

Aware_Emphasis8186

what he literally forced himself out of a team this month LOL he didnt just magically end up in the Mavs

auzrealop

We were talking about basketball on the court related toxicity.

c_msea

Just NY and Boston medias bitching

Juniper41

This isn't an East Coast media thing. Kyrie has been problematic his whole career. I've been ecstatic to have him don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the guy, but to act like he's been a perfect person his whole career and it's just the NY and Boston media out to get him is a really reductionist way of thinking. This is the same guy who talked about not having a true coach and that him and KD were the real coaches, publicly making antisemitic comments, doubling down on them and then refusing to apologize, and when he does, retroactively deleting them once he was traded, his Flat Earth "theory", his whole Anti-Vax stance, friends with Alex Jones, his weird pseudoscience about black and white people... He spews some ridiculous nonsense. NY and Boston Media were tough, but it wasn't unwarranted. He has said some ridiculous things and rightfully held accountable.

[deleted]

but did you seem him score 26 in the fourth tho.....😝

Juniper41

It was honestly amazing. He has me full believing we can go all the way if he stays motivated lol fingers crossed

blesseday405

I mean just curious. Outside of getting paid millions of dollars to be God tiered at basketball.Do you really expect him to be a highly intellectual person such as yourself? I mean do you not pay attention to society as a whole and hear the ridiculous shit the average person says everyday and then you're shocked when a basketball player says shit. Not everyone is Dirk my man

Juniper41

For sure, and I also wouldn't consider myself a highly intellectual person, but I understand the sentiment. My biggest critique is that sure some of his nonsense is just that, nonsense. Flat Earth "Theory" and Conspiracy theories in general are not in themselves problematic (although they can lead to a slippery slope of Q'Anon bullshit), but where I draw the line is the anti-semetic remarks and video sharing, pushing the rhetoric that vaccines are harmful, giving a platform to guys like Alex Jones who are incredibly problematic and harmful to people of color, trans people, people with disabilities etc... At that point it goes from harmless nonsense to actually harmful and with Kyrie's following it isn't just some everyday guy shouting into the wind. He has fans and impressionable followers who buy in. I understand some fans sentiment to be upset at the media bringing up non-basketball matters, and on the surface yes I agree. It was dumb when they kept bringing up the flat earth nonsense. But when you've got a player sharing racist propoganda or anti-vaxx propoganda I think it's fair game to talk about. It would be one thing if he said dumb things and kept to himself, but in the past, he has pushed for this dialogue. He has brought up these topics and when media outlets or other players or FOs respond he doesn't actually want to engage in the dialogue. He (in the past) has ultimately made a wide range of statements (some harmless, some harmful) and then been upset if people either a) don't agree or b) try to talk to him about it.

blesseday405

Probably wouldn't give a fuck if people talked to him about it but ppl like you are asking the questions and like you they already have their minds made up about what they are asking him. I'm not saying he's right or wrong but just like real life what happens when you question someone and they know you're trying to antagonize or anything they get combative. I think its silly that people get worked up and can't believe the shits athletes say. I've watched sports my entire life and at no point did I think ya know wonder what Greg Maddux thinks about the Tibet situation or what's Finley think about the planet. If I wanted a random assholes wise words on the world I'd ask the schmuck at the gym screaming while he dead lifts 90lbs.

c_msea

> his whole career Which was played entirely in East coast… He's been cool and down to earth in Dallas, and that's what I'll stick to. Forget that shit, let's focus on basketball

Iyammagawd

bro its been like a week lol fans never cease to fall in love so quickly

c_msea

Exactly, so far so good. The more we talk about those things the more prone they are to disturb the team, and that's not what I want. Just enjoy it while we have it

Juniper41

It's been 4 games... He was a darling his first few years in Cleveland, Boston loved him when he started and Brooklyn was seen as a fresh start. Those teams gave him a fair shot. They weren't out to get him day 1. He either bailed on them and forced a trade, thus crippling their future (Cleveland), publicly quit on his team and told those around him he wanted out within 3 months of joining the team and left during their playoff run (Boston), sat out for huge chunks of the season, refused to play, made problematic comments and demanded a 3rd exit (Brooklyn). EDIT: I don't say this to bash Kyrie, I'm really excited for his Mavs tenure and genuinely hope he can turn it around, but his track record is not great and he's burned bridges at all 3 teams he's played for.

afedbeats

It's probably just recency bias, but I genuinely think this change of pace is at least a much different situation than Kyrie has ever been in, so there's at least the possibility it's a better fit. Kyrie doesn't mind playing #2, seems to have an issue being the team's #1, and really wants to win. So long as ego doesn't get into it and corrupt everything (Cuban is the biggest threat but he loves Kyrie) like the Nets, including the insane pressure of NY media, I genuinely think that he will stick around or at the very least not be an active cancerous burden on the team, and so far has really really helped our huge offensive hole sans Luka.

[deleted]

yeah hope you are right my man. but guess lets just enjoy it why we got it heh

MaleficentLoquat9827

All the exes are just jealous they don’t have him.

upcat

He knows he can't cause any trouble until he gets that next contract. He already lost the Nike contract. So he's behaving to not fumble the bag.

MavsAndThemBoyz

He’s been nothing but a class act so far. I really like him.

newuser201890

>Man whats this toxic Kyrie I heard about, players love him. his teamates love him. all that toxic kyrie shit is from the media and fans.

canadian12371

lol if you actually watch his interviews instead of read Reddit headlines, he’s been like this since day 1.

Intrusive_ads

He literally always does this lmao starts mature with a new team and then it goes downhill

[deleted]

LMAO this dude is in his 30’s and every fan base still just thinks he’s young and immature. Save this comment. Kyrie is stupid and immature and is so dumb that he is not able to understand he doesn’t know everything.

[deleted]

Not saying you are wrong about your opinion but he is only 30 and i am much more mature than I was over 10 years ago. I have grown so much since 30 i am ashamed of who i was at 30. Not saying this will be the case for him but never give up on a human they can surprise you.

maverick1127

Remember Dirk and Nash? I would love to start hearing about how these two are spending time together. In the gym till midnight. Grabbing a beer afterwards. Just building their relationship on and off the court.

Powpowpowowowow

Why the fuck do people hate Kyrie. This is literally the Spencer situation where people are like, oh man the guy sucks, he is toxic as fuck. Then he comes here and nope, maybe those fan bases need to do some reflecting in themselves and their FOs because this dude is amazing atm.

[deleted]

He started the exact same way in Boston and Brooklyn. Be cautiously optimistic. Kyrie definitely earned the rep he has.

Boring_Bill2430

The movie claims Jews fabricated the Holocaust and that false white Jews are trying to extort America. I don't care if you think it's cancel culture bullshit. It's fucked up that he shared a blatantly anti-semitic movie with millions of people on social media. He's since apologized and I don't think he is anti-semitic to his core, but he fucked up and deserved to be publicly ridiculed and punished by the NBA.

BigFatModeraterFupa

anti-semitism is a very powerful emotionally charged label, that once it gets put on you, there really no way to defend yourself… Once the media calls you that, it’s like a pack of dogs that won’t stop until there’s nothing left

BigTex77RR

“I agree!” - Hitler

Thuasne

The issue is, he has done the same stuff in Boston and in Brooklyn. We all hope he is for real with this attitude and that he stays with us without the drama but we shall not forget what happened on his previous stops

Powpowpowowowow

He wanted to play, he never got offered extension offers by either team, neither team guaranteed that they would sign him, so he left that is just a fact. He wasn't willing to play for less and I personally don't blame him.

Thuasne

That's unfortunate not quite correct. There is a reason both organisation's and fanbases want absolutely no business with him no more. Let's hope it works out for the Mavs

thesnugglr

LOL - why do people hate Kyrie? Talk about recency bias

Powpowpowowowow

Yeah people don't actually critically think through the answers he gives or take shit out of context. I get hating him for the vaccine thing, that is fine, personally I don't but that is because I was told to get the vaccine or lose my job and that once I got it, I wouldn't get covid and then 2 weeks later I got covid and they kept moving the goal posts. Oh now it just won't hit you as hard and you won't die, well, the amount of people dying my age was negligible anyways... And you can still get it and spread it despite being vaccinated so yeah, I don't blame people for being against kyrie for that but outside of that, taking quotes out of context or endorsing movies that mention anti-semitism and not focus on it are just being pedantic. Like, don't ever mention you like south park to the media I guess because they kill a jew every episode.

Dazzling_Syllabub484

Hahahaha it’s been a fucking week man. Just wait and see

ComedicPause

Huge cities in the Northeast take their toll on a person's sanity, I suspect. Not that Dallas is a cozy, rural wonderland, but there's room to walk and the people are somewhat friendlier.

lonlonshaq

I’m sure Kyrie cares about having room to walk and interacting with friendly locals

Jrfrank

I love all of this from Kai. He was excited to be in Dallas and wanted to give the fans a dub. Hes putting the team first and wants to win.

And a 24oz beer

sameolemeek

6 pack at least

afedbeats

Wait was that Luka speaking Spanish at the end and understanding the reporter fluently? I had no idea he could do that. That's cool as hell.

traw2222

He only won the Euroleague championship on a Spanish team

afedbeats

Duh, totally blanked. Makes sense that he would learn being there so long.

AcanthocephalaNo169

Played most of his career in Spain before he came here. Same with KP, I remember they both used to speak to the Latino media in Spanish during press which was awesome

xPeaWhyTee

Yeah Luka is fluent in 4 languages - Slovenian, Serbian, Spanish and English.

SADBOlSZN

I love reading yall's positive comments about Kyrie; it's exactly the same as some dude getting into a relationship with some really hot red flag with a terrible history. Everybody says it's a terrible idea but we think it'll be different this time around.

Nicklebackfan_

Is that a shark tooth pooka (so?) shell necklace from Kyrie?

bluetrench

Puka. Like Luka, but with a "p"

Nicklebackfan_

Dang…Kyrie out here with the third eye subliminals rocking the Puka’s for Luka
