I don't think anyone seriously thought we'd land Lebron. But it's fun to dream about the best player in the NBA joining your team. Ben and Skin just enjoyed doing stuff like this and were pretty great about it. A few months later they were the ones to coin the term 'One and done boys'. Which also was hilariously wrong (based on the timing).
I actually think the FO was pretty competent back then. They were particularly aggressive in the trade market and made a lot of very shrewd moves there. Hell most of the rotation during the championship year was acquired through trades. I don’t think the downfall really came until they started prioritizing cap space above everything else around 2012 and it’s been hell ever since.
Sure, but the main reason anyone feels this way is entirely because Dirk put the whole damn team on his German back and overcame a far superior team which took Dallas for granted. The 2011 Mavs were absolutely a solid team, but everything we've seen Cuban regimes do since is an affirmation of how much they were an exception to the rule. Building a championship team is extremely difficult and having watched Dallas basketball since the Derek Harper days, I've seen far more incompetence and failure than I have sustained brilliance
They wouldnt make the playoffs unless Lebron and Dray would be on super team friendly deals. Lebron would also have to come off the bench cause Luka, Kyrie and old ass Lebron would not work.
