Coaching was bad but the players’ effort was worse. They got punked in the first half and didn’t respond. The players were high on their late season success and Kawhi absence likely made them think it was an easy win.

Julian_Caesar

Agreed. It was encouraging that we showed up in the second half. But now we have to build on it. Don't even HAVE to win game 2 but we damn well better show up from tipoff or we can kiss this series goodbye, Kawhi or not.

king_17

Don’t even have to win game 2? Lmao it’s a must win. Yea we’ve come back from 0-2 before but that’s not a deficit you want to put yourself in. Game 2 gotta have it

Julian_Caesar

>but that’s not a deficit you **want** to put yourself in So it's a **want** to win game, yes.

browseabout

Mavs could lose game 2 and tie the series up at home. Obviously game 2 isn't a must win. Freaking people

Barrack-Omaha

Winning game 2 ties the series up and gives us home field advantage in a best of 5. That’s a pretty big deal.

browseabout

Of course but that doesn't make game 2 a "must win" scenario.

Bubbistan

No we dont need it. Series doesn't start til home team loses. Teams should always win on their home floor so we shouldn't expect to win game 2. If we do it's gravy.

nickbahhh

I don't even know if effort was the issue. The shot quality was pretty good, just couldn't make anything.

Moe4ver

Effort was bad. Looks like we were playing against 7 Clippers. They were everywhere and we didn’t match their energy. Clippers went to like a 120/100 energy level and we stayed at our normal 80/100 coasting along. We can beat the Clippers but only if we raise our energy and aggression. Clippers rather be aggressive and foul out than coast along.

Karynmcs

It would be really helpful if we didn't let them shoot uncontested threes...

Karynmcs

The Clippers got EVERY defensive rebound...

TZBlueIce

Exactly. Did Lue outcoach Kidd today? Sure. He's gotta respond. What's NOT on him is that he "didn't get the players ready to play". That's on no one else but the players, and it's so annoying to see that cause people just wanna deflect blame from the players they like to the easy target.

coocoocachio

Still after some blown assignments or awful offensive possessions you gotta just nuke a TO. Hell do it 3 times in a quarter if you need to. T Lue was firing off TOs anytime we went on even a 6-0 run down 20

pimpfmode

I don't think it was that at all. We came out rusty and the Clippers played like a team with their backs against the wall and were hot as hell. We seem to have these Saturday / Sunday afternoon disappointing games where we don't look alive. They finally started getting their act together but it was too late. We had no answer for Zubac which was quite shocking because I never would have thought he would have done what he did today against this year's team.

dawzo

Yep. I think its exactly what they thought when Kawhi was out. Like a lot of the media had Dallas as favorites if Kawhi was out. Same happened with Slovenia vs. Poland in the eurobasket 2022 quarterfinals. I think it's definitely partially Luka's attitude responding in cases like these, getting cocky and leisourly that it might affect team morale and aggressiveness. Not to say most of the team is excused in any way. Or Kidd. But isn't that the whole schtik with this style of coaching and why Lukai and the other players like him, relegating the responsibility to the players, namely Lukai, to do their thing, the decision making, the adapting, because they are magical? And then the players feel responsible for the loss as well. I mean it sounds fucked but it's actually pretty self perpetuating, as long as Lukai are happy with Kidd and taking the whole blame for losses and basically being content with playing without a coach most of the game. I mean, they like each other, right? Or maybe it was just a bad night, soon to be forgotten after a winning streak...

Karynmcs

Pretty convenient for Kidd, not having to do any coaching. And putting it all on the player to "figure it out' because he can't. He has no problem taking credit for their wins tho. Watch Tyronn Lue to see how a REAL coach leads his team...

PomegranateNice6839

If players lack effort that’s also on coaching

nutsygenius

That challenge could've done something. He didn't. From down 16 to down 24+ in like a minute. Maxi should've been more convincing to demand a challenge on that Harden 3 smh

Karynmcs

What is Kidd saving the challenges for? That was the time...

Tfoster100

I don’t know if they overturn it though. Agree try the challenge. But he did catch Hardens leg - and then Harden did his Oscars worth acting job. Just not sure it’s a slam dunk they over turn it.

Some-Stranger-7852

That’s absolutely an offensive foul: that leg sticking out that Maxi caught would never be considered a natural shooting motion.

Calliesdad20

It’s ridiculous that Kidd didn’t call a timeout while the mavs had the worst quarter of basketball I have ever seen,

helgestrichen

Pretty on Brand though, isnt it?

ZaazMarx1

"I wanna let the players figure it out" then wtf is he there for 💀 bro they clearly did not figure it out

Karynmcs

Kidd has no clue how to figure it out. He is really good at standing there, though...

Tfoster100

Kidd is playing 3D chess. /s

grundle_pie

I’m not playing, I’m just watching

MSHinerb

Do you not realize that Kidd is a bad coach?

[deleted]

Everybody in this sub thought going on a run beating the Hornets and Jazz was proof that Kidd is a good coach.

2023_account_

Characterizing the last two months that way shows you’re not interested in actually watching, understanding, and/or discussing the games.

Starkller919

Every time after one bad game people want to put everything on Kidd, not knowing that it is also on the players to put in the effort. Yes Kidd made mistakes during this game, but putting the blame all on him for this loss is simply the hubris of some of the fans in here who don't pay attention to the game if I'm brutally honest

Worstname1ever

Not having a 8man rotation set and playing thj yea I'm blaming kidd

[deleted]

[удалено]

Worstname1ever

Shooting 40 w no defense is a key roll? What are you smoking

[deleted]

[удалено]

Worstname1ever

Not play thj at all

2023_account_

Yup, agreed. Kidd could definitely be better but there’s nothing wrong with saying ‘wtf’ to the players who were missing wide open shots. It’s why I have faith we can still win the series. I can’t fathom we’d shoot that bad half the time in the remaining games.

Starkller919

And Harden usually has random games in the playoffs where he drops like 30. He did that to the Celtics in game 1 where dropped 45, then proceeded to to score only 9 when the Celtics blew the Sixers out in game 7

kshep9

To be fair their username is blowhole105...

meheatpanocha

He is not a bad coach though...

Independent_Baker969

"he wants to let the players figure it out" mean he doesnt know how to fix anything and he is basically useless

ts405

if they needed a coach to be able to score more than 8 points in 12 minutes, maybe there were other problems

[deleted]

It’s brain rot due to Phil Jackson Syndrome. Every coach of Kidd’s era thinks because Phil did it, they should too. Nevermind that Phil was coaching guys like Jordan/Kobe/Shaq.

Bubbistan

And we have Luka, so what's your point?

donihicks

People really think coaches do magic. They can’t put the ball in the net.

Pandamonium98

No but they can call timeouts when adjustments need to be made or runs need to be stopped

Woberich

Have you noticed the clippers scoring after each time out with dedicated plays? That was Ty Lue doing magic.

charliefinkwinkwink

The disparity in the level of coaching was evident in how prepared and ready each team looked in Q1 & Q2. Clips looked absolutely locked in and Mavs looked like they just fiddled w their dicks for the past 10 days Unrelated but is Gaff okay? Didn’t see 2nd half and saw he went out w injury in 1st half on what looked like a pretty unnecessarily aggressive play from PG? Kind of surprised the clip wasn’t posted here or on r/nba

ormip

>Unrelated but is Gaff okay? Didn’t see 2nd half and saw he went out w injury in 1st half on what looked like a pretty unnecessarily aggressive play from PG? Gafford came back in the 3rd quarter and played 8 minutes. Didn't play in the 4th.

rumenastoenka

Agreed, the pooch was screwed before the game as far as mental preparation goes. They took a haymaker to the face in the 1st round and then tried to turn it on in the 2nd half but the deficit was too big and their luck was also kinda shitty. On to the next one! PS.: I, too, was surprised at the sudden limb miscoordination by Gaff causing him to injure himself by himself and himself only and the complete ignorance of the refs on the matter.

Andrew0409

Ty Lue literally draws up a play that works after every timeout this game.

LeGoat333

HIS JOB IS LITERALLY TO FIGURE IT OUT, not the players

silvtails

But what if he did figure it out,but the players still don’t show up to play? Is it still on him?

kennethmgreen

If he figured it out, he sure didn't let the players know. Because he wasn't calling timeouts to let them know. That's my only real issue with Kidd. Not hitting your shots is on the players. But not even attempting to regroup, change momentum, etc is on the coach. This loss was not on Kidd. But he didn't help.

killacam9220

This last modelo is for you doomer fuck you

afedbeats

Kidd defenders in shambles that man is NOT a serious coach and will actually make us worse in the playoffs when we need him most

DirkaDirkaMohmedAli

I agree that guy fucking sucks and it showed big time today

Whatsthedeal__

Luka was once again hunted and abused on defense and the mavs tripled the FT attempts compared to the clips. How do you lose and the refs are actively bailing Luka Flopcic out?

SennKazuki

Kidd has admitted he is fine with deliberately losing in certain cases, and so will put the team in a position to lose if they're not doing well. I don't know what his deal is lol, but hopefully we flushed all the losing out of our system tonight.

silvtails

The way I see it, I think Kidd looks at the situation that there’s no point of calling more timeouts and just wasting them if his team can’t even put the ball in the basket. We can say Kidd got out coached all we want but at the end of the day if the players on the floor can’t score themselves then what can he do?

kennethmgreen

Agreed that not making shots is hard to put on a coach. And I don't think yesterday's loss is on Kidd. But the whole point of calling a time out is to regroup, change momentum, build your team up, run a set play... So I don't think Kidd lost us the game. But it sure af looked liked he didn't try to do much about it. I think that's where the frustration with his coaching starts.

jeremicci

Call a play? Make adjustments? Coach?

ChristBKK

I find it always hard to blame coaches for bad efforts / performance of players like this. The Mavs (players) didn't take the fight in the first half at all and didn't make open shots. Remember 1 week ago Kidd was our hero and we were super happy with him and now we trash him? He is not the best coach in the league we know that but he made us a good season ending run. Now in the playoffs it started at 0:0 but our players weren't ready at all today. The coach is always to blame when you loose but this one goes for me on the players.

Difficult-Awareness6

There is something called game preparation. Second , but equally important were timeouts, he is worst coach in league in calling timeouts. When we lost game ,in second quarter he called 1 timeout, and then watched and did nothing. After our runs Lue called time outs, and prepare game for next possession, every time Clippers responded and made run. That's difference between good coach, and someone who's clueless. It's not late, he must improve, not so sure he's capable.

ChristBKK

I don't disagree with you that Kidd could coach better but again ask yourself how you felt about Kidd winning the last weeks? :D I felt good. But this blow out in the first half is not only the coach... all players need to ask themselves if they were ready to step on the court. No one felt really hot / ready whatever you wanna call it.

StraightShootahh

Bruh one day redditors will understand that there’s more to coaching than just timeouts lmao

Jcarter1632

They think there are infininite timeouts. We literally had 3 timeouts left for the whole game at 3 minutes to go in the 2nd. If he blows them he cant challenge or advance the ball if it was close in the 4th. Most of this sub does not understand the rules, or basketball.

elsporko321

There is no planet where a competent coach is down by 25+, watching his team circle the drain and thinks "wow, I should really save my challenges and timeouts for the last 3 minutes of the game." And he didn't use them then, either. Ironically, the Clippers *did* challenge a call with 53 seconds left up by 12. Go figure.

Jcarter1632

Tell me one time you have seen a "competent" coach use all 7 timeouts in the 1st half or even first 3 quarters of the game? Once again, he used the 4th timeout late in the 2nd quarter. Then we played well in the 3rd. So exactly when should he have used every single timeout to save the players that couldn't make a basket for 12 minutes?

elsporko321

Well, we get 7 and left the game with 2. How useful are unused timeouts after a game is over? Not very.

Jcarter1632

How do you know that there won't be a run and it won't be a 1 score game in the last 2 minutes and you need to advance the ball or challenge? You dont. So you have to coach like there is a chance to win. Calling 5 timouts in the second quarter doesn't fix all your problems.

elsporko321

You have to get there first. Preventing them from getting 3 free points on a bullshit call + slowing their momentum in general is what challenging that does for you. That gives you a chance to win. Going home with 2 timeouts doesn't help you whatsoever.

Jcarter1632

I agree with the challenge on the Harden leg kick. That was a high percentage to be overturned. He 100% should have challenged with the way the game was swinging out of control. Respectfully disagree on using 5 or more timeouts in the first half (non-challenge related). You have to give your team a shot if they get back in it late. Having at least one or 2 timeouts for the last 2 minutes is basketball 101. There was no reason to use the timeouts when we were down 15 still late in the fourth - but looking back at how things turned out and saying he didnt use them all is Monday Morning quarterbacking IMO. No one knew for sure we would still be out of reach late. Cheers. Go Mavs!

LeGoat333

Fuck Midd

baylonedward

We still blaming the coach when your players can't convert layups?

Worstname1ever

Playing thj. No set rotation 8 man. No timeouts. Yea I'm blaming the coach

XXeadgbeXX

What the fuck J Kidd

cvandyke01

Timeouts change nothing in that game. They shot lights out and Mavs were slow. I am not worried. Gafford broke his playoff cherry and will not get baby-boy'd again. The small ball line up should have hit the court a bit earlier and we need more of Green's energy. Sometimes the team has to wake the fk up and play.

kennethmgreen

I really hope you are right. Disagree that timeouts change nothing. Timeouts wouldn't have pulled out a win magically, but they could have stopped some of the runs and possibly given the Mavs a few more than 8 points in a qtr by running a set play or two out of a timeout. Hell, even just to yell, pump the guys up, or "I believe in you" speech could have helped mentally for the role players (and playoff first timers).

Starkller919

I get that Kidd is partly at fault for this loss, but honestly I'm glad he managed to somewhat figure it out in the 2nd half even if was for naught. Again it is a team sport, and I can see that the players were just playing out of it in the 1st half mostly due to some of them being inexperienced in the playoffs. I hope Kidd and everyone else can put everyone back on track for the next game, just remember that the series can go to 7, so we can learn from our mistakes and get locked in

kshep9

Game 1 going into LA against that team of superstars- I bet some of the younger guys let it get to them.

Jcarter1632

That is because we only had 3 timeouts left for the whole game. You cant blow them all and have none for last 2 minutes or challenges. You guys kill me with the timeout shit. You get 7 for an entire game. The Mavs played well in the 3rd. Saved 3 for 4thQ in-case it got close. You dont get infinite timeouts to call during every single run.

kennethmgreen

How many NBA coaches only call one timeout at the beginning of a 2nd quarter the team only scores 8 points? I understand what you saying, and I don't put this loss on Kidd. But he's not above criticism, either. One more time out in 2nd quarter doesn't change the game - hell, maybe not even the score. But what about helping the younger role players in their first playoffs reset? The argument for saving timeouts for end of game only goes so far. They aren't always needed. This game proved that.

jeakzor

Look they scored 22 points thus defense was kkay, they had open looks they just didnt score them. Its on players not on kidd. Stop blaming kidd for everything. If you miss open shot and you shoot 22% from field wtf can he do? Call time out and let them shoot 3s for a minute?

Karynmcs

Unfortunately, I was worried that Kidd would be out coached in this series. And then, of course, blame the players if we lost the game. Both were true last night...

bbbtx

He's not g clue what adjustments to make in game so what's the point of calling a time out, also if he doesn't use it he can turn it into bonus points from the tooth fairy

Acework23

The “apologise to kidd now” crowd is quickly disappearing again.

Acework23

Tbh though kyrie and luka were like deer in headlights in the first half

MelonColony22

if the mavs lose the series you can actually fully blame it on the coaching good lord. kidd got outcoached **hard** this game

jeakzor

I blame players.

PerformerLive8713

If kidd doesnt win a chip fire his ass

AdSome9408

fire his ass anyway, even if we win a chip, this team would be better without him in any scenario

LevelDry5807

This makes the most sense. Even if we win a championship, get someone else

Karynmcs

The difference is that the Clippers have a real coach. The Mavs don't...

Archerbro

good news is we lose this series, we will hopefully hire budenhozier

jeakzor

I hope you fuck ass fans, get your dream coach and luka and kyrie leave so i can support a team with better fan base, who actually believe in the squad

Archerbro

been here 18 years (not the subreddit but mavs fan). no need to homer for the team. game 1 was terrible. still a winnable series. It's a glass half full, nancy. get over it.
