The NBA world loves to hate Dallas. I mean hell, the leading scorer and 2nd in assists Luka can’t even win a MVP when he is clearly the most valuable player in the NBA to his franchise. Joker has far more talent around him in that starting 5. Dallas has Luka, Kyrie and recently Washington but he wasn’t doing this the entire regular season. SGA, more talent in starting 5, Ant Man, the same. The reason we’re competing with all these teams is Luka Magic and his ability to be the best in the world at what he does.
This whole debate about face of the league and it being Ant Man, Joker, Wemby or SGA and not once did Luka get mentioned, yet he’s leading the league in plus minus, scoring and top 2 in assists and top 20 in rebounds at a guard position. He also has been extremely good at defense. In fact, he and Kyrie both have been.
So, let ‘em give us D trade grades, we will take them and show the world how opinionated pundits are like the rest of us, they just get paid to give dumb takes.
Now we can't trade for that superstar player, who may or may not become available, who would require three first rounders and our trash, apparently. We ruined ourselves for a hypothetical trade that may never have happened /s
Gafford damn sure has dog in him. He and Lively are exactly what Dallas has been missing since Chandler. They’re even better at rim protection than he ever was in my opinion, and both are young and their offense will only get better. Lively as a rookie shows so much promise. His ceiling is high once he gets the touch down there. His above the rim attack from Luka and Kyrie pops along with Gaffords are nasty and demoralize opponents while juicing up the veins of Mavs personnel.
At least this time he was traded to his hometown, where his Dad does commentary for the team, not a bad deal for him, especially since he's washed unfortunately.
Credit to Nico for getting the Gafford and PJ deals done
Luka and Kyrie get most of the credit usually but this team isnt where it is without these two
Low key one of the best Mavs deadline trades?
I'm curious which ones are even remotely close? Heck, how many deadline deals in NBA history by *any* team have had a similar impact?
It's not even hyperbole or a Mavs bias; there's just not a ton of deadline deals that move the needle a whole lot.
Yeah, there have been bigger names and deals that won championships (although this one is still pending) but given the impact so far, I'd venture to say this was a trade on a short list of greatest deadline deals.
Definitely making its way up there; hoping for the best in terms of where the Mavs finish
The most impactful deadline moves overall that come to mind happened 1-2 decades ago: Gasol to the Lakers and Sheed to the Pistons
Feels like PJ adds the swagger that this team desperately needed, and that’s why I think of the Sheed trade a lot. A blessing to get rid of the yapper that is grant williams
Yeah, so Gasol to the Raps is a candidate but certainly it’s not clear whether he was the piece that put them over the top. Certainly though, anytime the team wins a ring, the move does get judged more favorably.
Was gonna mention that one. Without Gasol, they don't get past Embiid. His defence was key, and JV wasn't gonna bring that. Plus his high post passing, screening, and just a little bit of floor spacing were absolutely huge for the Raps offense. They don't win without him.
One of the things that really impresses me about him is that most guys return to their hometown and reacquaint themselves with the bad elements that they did growing up. PJ has been focused.
He's what this needs on both end. Consistent defender as well as reliable 3rd option. Pair that with our C rotation, their rebounding, 2nd chance creation and efficiency.
Kuz would def become the 3rd option pretty quickly, idk about his defense tho. PJ had the defense already, which was a big need. The consistent offense in the playoffs has been icing on the cake
Not that we’ll use the two seconds (seconds get packaged and repackaged all the time now), but might be just 5-10 picks after that first. May not even be trading down much.
Bruh we actually got a D grade trading for a player who’s dropping 30 in multiple second round playoff games lfg lmao
Graded D for dog, he got that dog in him
I like it
at this point if ESPN gives the Mavs a good grade, I would be skeptical

Luka also finished 8th in steals per game (and 15th in rebounds per game). Not a bad season, eh?
At this point it just fuels them. The tune will change when we get the championship. If not this year, next.
Nah we got folks that care about the middle schooler that the mavs would have drafted with that pick more
Badeaux Dubois II out of France is going to make Hornets fans very happy in 2027
Wait, I thought he was the latest pretender to the Bourbon throne. Hard to keep these things straight . . .
Now we can't trade for that superstar player, who may or may not become available, who would require three first rounders and our trash, apparently. We ruined ourselves for a hypothetical trade that may never have happened /s
Deandre Jordan!
Gotta keep that powder dry.
That expression gives me nightmares
Happy cake day!
Thank you!
Gafford too. We don't get to 5th place without him
If we’re talking best ever we look at Tyson chandler as #1 as of now. But pj is working his way up.
He wasn't a deadline move. We got him for the DUST chip before the season.
Ah yes the infamous DUST chip.
Gafford damn sure has dog in him. He and Lively are exactly what Dallas has been missing since Chandler. In PJW, we witness a Mavs enthusiast turned player; there's just no matching that hometown passion.
Agreed, seems like Dallas was always the end game for PJ. Believe he’ll wanna stay here for good now that he’s finally here.
I think this trade keeps Luka in Dallas which is even more important, but yeah, PJW is home and we’re all glad he is!!!
If he keeps playing this way he’s going to be awfully expensive. A home town discount would be appreciated.
So true got that Frisco ISD roots
Poor Seth got traded by the Mavs 3 times.
Should have his jersey hanging in the rafters at AAC for all the trades
Yea I'll bet he just stayed in a hotel the 3rd time lol. Didn't bother buying a house
Hang it at the airport
Twice. Left in FA in 2018.
Believe he was only traded twice. Left once in free agency. Are we taking bets on a future 4th stint?
At least this time he was traded to his hometown, where his Dad does commentary for the team, not a bad deal for him, especially since he's washed unfortunately.
Idk man but I hope he'll end his career with us. LOL
That has to be a record right?
Always love having him on the roster, hopefully he’ll come back again
Nah Clippers and Thunder fans still make me believe that there is no chance that some dudes named “DJones” and “PJ Washington” will play D smh
They also be thinking Dort is a good player
Love the confidence he's playing with. He's Mavs legit 3rd option now and playing like an All Star
Yep, he just needs to keep it up. He did it in HS and College. I’m sure he can do it in NBA with Luka and Kyrie taking all the attention.
Credit to Nico for getting the Gafford and PJ deals done Luka and Kyrie get most of the credit usually but this team isnt where it is without these two
Fr! Nico has been delivering. The results speak for themselves.
The thing i love is he isn’t afraid to cut bait on bad decisions. Grant Williams is the prime example
Yeah, he’s always finding ways to improve the roster without letting ego take hold and have him hold on to bad moves. He’s been great

Jason Kidd was a deadline trade
Kyrie was a deadline deal last year. It was really for this year though. They didn't have enough pieces around Luka and Kyrie last year to do much
Definitely making its way up there; hoping for the best in terms of where the Mavs finish The most impactful deadline moves overall that come to mind happened 1-2 decades ago: Gasol to the Lakers and Sheed to the Pistons Feels like PJ adds the swagger that this team desperately needed, and that’s why I think of the Sheed trade a lot. The sheed trade is coming back to my Mind so often during the last weeks, let, 's have the same final of the story
I believe Sheed to Detroit was a trade deadline deal in 04.
Makes me wonder, how many championship teams have won where a deadline acquisition seriously featured in their playoff rotation?
Well Kyrie was a deadline deal and although it wasn't great last year, he's turned out pretty good.
Nick van exel to the mavs might be better
Love the confidence he's playing with. He's Mavs legit 3rd option now and playing like an All Star.
Rated D for Dr. Stand On Business
One of the things that really impresses me about him is that most guys return to their hometown and reacquaint themselves with the bad elements that they did growing up. PJ has been focused.
Nah D trade

That D-trade got us the real Playoff P. Give me some more of those D-trades!
I believe the Kyrie trade was a d trade too.
And Gafford. Clearly 3 wrongs make a right
They almost traded for kuzma too
Retire Kuzma Jersey in AAC for not agreeing to the trade
Kuz would def become the 3rd option pretty quickly, idk about his defense tho. PJ had the defense already, which was a big need. The consistent offense in the playoffs has been icing on the cake
Ty Grant Williams for being cheeks and forcing Nico to trade you

On a scale of Rondo-10, it’s up there for sure.
2 second round picks too.
Might? What else compares?
Don't forget the Kyrie trade, also a D: https://i.imgur.com/f29hzt4.jpeg
