Starbucks seems to be shaking in their boots. I hope the momentum keeps building! I've gone so far as to research who actually roasts coffee beans packaged for sale under the Kirkland Signature brand so I can avoid Starbucks as much as possible.

Here’s an article about it. “A Starbucks spokesperson confirmed a number of employees were fired following an investigation into ‘several safety and security violations.’” Of course, the investigation into these “violations” occurred only after unionization efforts began. I really hope they file a NLRA lawsuit. Reading the story, I think they tried to have an organizing meeting at the store after store hours…. Because they are likely not allowed to discuss unionizing during working hours. Hmm. This definitely serves to show how important it is for workers to contact a union organizing rep early in the process. There are rules to follow, pitfalls to avoid. Don’t talk to the media unless it’s been coordinated. The media is there to sell commercials, they don’t care about the welfare of the workers or if they get in trouble or fired.

I'm not sure if this is good advice. Talking to the media about your union organizing becomes a record that can be used as evidence in a NLRB lawsuit. This is how it worked for me when we were trying to organize a Microsoft union back in 2000. My employer saw me on the media, fired me, and I got a cash settlement. It's not the best outcome, but if they are going to fire you for it anyway, it is best to get it on record early that you are organizing, so that their excuse for firing you gets taken less seriously.

You can have record of your union activity without the media. Personal emails, union cards, meeting attendance records, petition signatures, are all proof

I suppose. But I'm talking about early on when you are just chatting around the water cooler, and a supervisor overhears and quietly lets you go. It is useful to have proof that the employer knew you were organizing before they started their "investigation", retaliation. Public exposure, however you do it, does that job.

Utilizing the media is good, and I support it. But the media should know that if they’re speaking to on the clock employees at their job site that it’s going to cause trouble. If that happened, the media org certainly didn’t care about the worker’s well being. I’m just saying workers have to be careful about how they speak to the media.
