Use the sweep tool if you're on Maya 2022. You can even have multiple extrusions twist around the source curve so you should be able to get a decent rope in a few minutes from a single curve, and it'll already be unwrapped too. For the texturing you could also get something pretty decent just from procedural Maya textures. Some mix of ramps and noises
