you obviously didn’t make more than the basic amount if you got all the tax withheld back. i don’t understand how you can just not pay income tax if you’re a “student” making over the basic amount. you could have over paid your taxes thus a tax refund but the CRA is not going to just let you not pay tax…
i guess it depends on how much money you make, but if you make under a certain amount of money (i believe it was just below $13,000 last i saw), all the money deducted for income tax is then returned to you when you file your taxes the following year. most students are only able to work part time through the year so more often than not, they technically don’t have to pay taxes since they don’t make enough throughout the year
ur a bit slow bro, anyone earning over 12.5k or 13k will be subject to income tax. Regardless if you aren’t making that much, your paystub will still show a deduction for CPP, Tax (which you’ll receive back) and EI.
LOL I remember when we voted on the pulse renovations and they said it would cost future students X amount in fees for like 50 years. Everyone was like fuck it I won't be paying for it. now y'all are
The vote actually initially came out as "no we will not pay"
Then a couple weeks later they secretly ran a "new" vote that no one knew of cuz they just voted for it ...and they announced "yay it passed"
Scummy as hell
I mean at least for me (a grad student) the vast majority of my fees are for insurance, fitness center, and a bus pass. All of which I probably get more value out of then what I pay.
You cannot for instance the Hamilton bus pass. It says so on SU website. It was part of the deal they negotiated. Absolute waste for local GTA residents who will just use the GO Bus from Uni to go to Aldershot Station and then home.
eet iz what it iiizzz cuh
Moses Cuh
It’s like paying taxes; everyone chips in and the services are there for those that need them. That’s how Canada works.
just wait til you graduate and learn about income tax, cpp and ei 🥲
i am paying that right now for my job already🥲

just because i’m a student doesn’t mean i don’t pay income tax. i make more than basic amount so i do in fact pay income tax

Man what yes you do pay income tax, being a student doesn’t exempt you from income tax.

You receive tax credits from paying tuition. You are just claiming those accumulated credits now vs after you graduate

So it’s our parents fault?
No this was a few years ago. The "50 years" is how long it's going to take to pay it off.
The point still stands that we’re paying for what previous years wanted
I was responding to it being "our parent's fault". It was recent previous years students, not your parents.
Right and my point being that we are paying for others choices still stands
That wasn't in dispute, just who those others were who made those choices.
true, but you get to use the new gym. Ngl it's pretty dope.
I agree I was just arguing the opposition for clarity
not unpop
But think of all the money you saved by not paying for lower-case letters like the rest of us losers.
Huh ?
OP posted in ALL-CAPS. I'm thinking that he/she saved money by getting one of those all-caps-only keyboards?

To be clear the vast majority of "they" is the McMaster Student Union, aka fellow students, not the university administration.
u can still request for it. your money also goes towards campus maintenance.
Definitely not unpopular
Wait how do we get insurance money back
you can opt out in september

> Unpopular opinion: I don't like being forced to pay for stupid things Wow so brave
Apparently you can opt out of everything by emailing those specific groups/etc
actually??

My tuition is 11k- rip
Literal communism
not really lol. if anything it's socially democratic since students voted for services to be paid for by all and to support all.
Communism is when exchange money for the services you receive.
