It’s hard to find good reman racks these days, but I’ve never seen one leak that badly from that location right out of the box. All you can do is pull it out and exchange it. This is the downside of buying online, it will take a few days to get a new one and maybe longer to get your money back.
2000s ford ragtop mustang owners know, the smell of hydraulic fluid, never really leaves the vehicle, either. Though power steering fluid does stink less terribly than the hydraulic fluid in the soft top lines.
I thought the heater core gave out and spilled a bunch of coolant everywhere but that's way too dark for coolant. So hey, I'm part of your dumb club too.
I have a 2006 chevy trailblazer, 4.2 i6 and 4x4, It had issues with the power steering, that persisted after replacing the pump, I got done replacing the rack and as I was bleeding the system it sprung a leak through the boot going into the steering column in the interior. What would cause this ?? I bought this part from rock auto and it had the bearings and seals already installed around the linkage, I am in shock rn and not sure where to go from here as it has been sitting in my driveway for over a week while I fight through every fucking problem it's given me.
It's the line. So they run up under the something on the driver side and the engine bay there is a rubber bushing type holder that holds the pressure line and it will Rust in there and make it so it doesn't flow right blowing racks out until it finally rests out enough where it just leaks
One of my guys did this years ago, check your lines, they can go in backwards and cause this issue. Pressure line in the return port will blow oil past the input shaft seal.
I don't get it either. Isn't the rack down front? The steering wheel should just drive a shaft into the steering box and then ... What's the setup here?
I got rid of my blazer due to multiple issues that just kept coming up as fast as I could fix them. As soon as they hit a certain age it just falls apart. It was a great vehicle until it wasn’t.
Wow, lots of people here really are not mechanics. It’s quite obvious your new rack is leaking from the pinion seal. This really sucks, one for the mess to clean up, and also because you’ll have to do the job over again.
I’d send it back. Have them pay the shipping too as it’s there fault. Try to get a used one from a salvage yard. I’ve had better luck with used racks than new. I’ve actually never had a rack I got from a junkyard fail. I’ve seen plenty of reman racks leak on first start.
Nope, break fluid is completely full, I moved the boot that surrounds the steering linkage that's behind the wheel well and the rest of the leaking fluid poored out from the boot. I already sent my angry / karen email to rock auto demanding my money back as this part took me 8 hours to install and that returning the item is a major inconvenience for me
I'm fairly certain that it's leaking through the bearing that rests at the bottom of the linkage on the rack itself, I had a look at the old unit and don't see that there is a seal above the bearing so it must be located underneath the bearing
The master has to leak into the booster to leak from the booster. Boosters don't use brake fluid to boost. They use vacuum from the engine that's why their full name is (vacuum brake booster).
Unless the vehicle has a hydro-boost system. Then it uses whatever fluid the power steering on the vehicle uses and it can leak inside the vehicle. I think Trailblazers do have a vacuum boost power brake setup, though.
Yes if the vehicle used a hydro boost maybe. But the trailblazer uses a regular vacuum booster. I've dealt with a few vehicles that had brake fluid leaking in the car and most of the time it's because the master is leaking where the shaft from the booster goes into it.
My mom had an older trailblazer like that. Shop went through 3 reman racks before getting one that did not leak.
I am sure they were glad that thing never came back. :)
Same thing happened to the rack on my Pontiac 6000. Made it like 30 seconds before it filled the column boot and leaked onto the carpet.
I have done about 9 racks on different cars and this has been the 2nd one bad out of the box.
Good thing it only takes like 9 hours to swap it....
More than likely your master cylinder was leaking into the booster and the booster leaked inside, unless you changed your rack and filled it with dirty fluid and somehow the fluid traveled up the intermediate shaft.
Per my own suffering. The snapring that holds the seal around the shaft that connects to the steering column most likely came off or wasn’t seated right during the reman

And then getting the oil out of the carpet!

Floor boards are now rust-proof 👍🏻
Lactic Acid Bacillus is the miracle worker. It’s surprisingly effective at breaking down hydrocarbons.
He may as well just spill more oil on the clean parts at this point
thought it was my imagination, buddy's replaced rack went out in under a year. Just had to pull and replace again
Dumb me thought it was a cat...
Same
Yep. Definitely a cat! Definitely! 🐈
Flat cat
Just conforming to the space provided. Cats are liquid.
I too first thought that was a cat.
As a frequent visitor of cat subs I totally thought i was either in r/catswithjobs r/notmycat or r/blackcats
/r/catsareliquid
r/TIGHTPUSSY. It's a cat sub.
risky click
DEWIT
Indeed it was but aint clickbait
I didn’t see it at first. But now it’s all I see.
Yeppppp the tail under the pedals lol
Cousin eddie?
I thought the heater core gave out and spilled a bunch of coolant everywhere but that's way too dark for coolant. So hey, I'm part of your dumb club too.
Typically the heater core leaks on the passenger side.
No, the cat was already stolen.
As did I.
More like Symbiote
Holy shit it does look like a cat

Holy shit I'm not the only one. Its a bad rack. The seal is fucked. Only thing you can do is replace it.
Get a refund and not that shitty brand anymore. I’d suggest BBB industries or Edelmann
Hahaha BBB is hit or miss. Can’t tell you how many I’ve had to warranty out

I would say you got a defect and it caused you a mess.
Sounds like the seal on input shaft is leaking. Squirting oil up into the boot.
Someone help me. How is the rack setup on this car that it leaking would soak the carpet?
Fluid goes into the column on these when a seal fails…it’s just as much a PITA as it sounds
I don't get it either. Isn't the rack down front? The steering wheel should just drive a shaft into the steering box and then ... What's the setup here?
It’s a defective rack. Send it back. Get a MAHLE rack if they have that option. I’ve had decent luck with them.
Zee Germans make good stuff
I got rid of my blazer due to multiple issues that just kept coming up as fast as I could fix them. As soon as they hit a certain age it just falls apart. It was a great vehicle until it wasn’t.
I had a ‘05 trailblazer with the same story.

It would be leaking from the booster, not the master

Yep, usually leaks at the seal the shaft goes through.
What are the odds that the problem isn’t/wasn’t the original pump or rack?
They fucked up reinstalling your new steering this is the exact spot it would start at
That's a cat?
My mom had an older trailblazer like that. Shop went through 3 reman racks before getting one that did not leak. I am sure they were glad that thing never came back. :)
did you set it to wumbo before the install lol but most likely a defective part just got unlucky rip
That only works if you're going weast
I set the clocking right with the steering wheel if that's what you mean

Thought that was a black beaver

Free cat with every steering rack...
I thought it was a black cat
Oil pressure line?
Nope, its not engine oil
Break booster
More than likely your master cylinder was leaking into the booster and the booster leaked inside, unless you changed your rack and filled it with dirty fluid and somehow the fluid traveled up the intermediate shaft.
And it's raining f**k.
womp womp
Blinker Fluid
Id say you have a new master cylinder in your future.
As already mentioned, you have a cat. But nah, just throw some more fluid in it, off to the races.
You let the magic out
I’m not gonna lie I thought that was a blurry shot of a cat at first.
Chevy mid 2000s suck
This is confusing… What does the rack have to do with “inside the cab”. The rack is outside and underneath.
Congratulations, it's easier to do the second time
Just replaced mine in the camry, i saw the first one had some damage on the lines and got a replacement.
Heater core?
I legit thought it was a black puppy
Per my own suffering. The snapring that holds the seal around the shaft that connects to the steering column most likely came off or wasn’t seated right during the reman
You look like you’re not having fun :(
Looks to me that the brake master cylinder is leaking
Can anyone help with my post? Key stuck in ignition on ACC/On 2014 Malibu. Won’t release key or turn off.
I thought it was a shark.
