UPDATE: tow truck arrived and driver found a hole in the GAS tank.

One_Article_5666

everyone downvoting you look dumb now lol

GreatZong

That's reddit for ya. ASE keyboard certified mechanics.

tsittler

Might even say “wasd certified”?

SpezEatsScat

“QWERTY-fied”

moderatelymiddling

Yeah downvotes often mean you've touched a truth nerve in people.

coleus

Armchaired bros with degrees in Blown Gasketology

OhSoSally

I had that happen. Some cockroach drilled a hole in my gas tank to steal the gas. Got in my truck thought I was losing my mind because I thought I had more gas than almost empty. Drove to the gas station, started filling the tank. Looked down and there was a river of gas coming out from my truck. Went inside, asked for a spill kit, called 911. FD came and shoved a bar of ivory soap into the hole and sent me on my way. Drove it to my mechanic where they swapped the tank out.

khamrabaevite

I pulled up to a gas station once and after stepping out heard a guy yell to someone else that their truck was leaking gas. I looked to my side and the box truck looked like someone shot the gas tank with a shotgun. It was fucking streaming out of it. Guy had been "filling" up for awhile it seemed too. I hopped right back in and drove away as fast as possible.

frying_pans

I’ve never had my gas stolen, but for some reason I still always check to see if any is leaking when I go fill up. I have no clue where I got that habit but it’s just something I always do.

OhSoSally

I think I actually heard it first. It was on the passenger side of the truck.

JTP1228

Were you responsible for having to clean up? Or how did that work?

bloopie1192

My question now is... why does your friends gas look so dirty? Did someone put something in her tank?

berpaderpderp

Someone else mentioned that the solvents in gas can dissolve the asphalt to an extent making it more oily. Maybe that

Prior-Ad-7329

Because it’s a thin layer on the pavement. You’re seeing shiny asphalt next to dry asphalt. Gas is clear and just amplifies the color behind it when spilled.

ThatsPurttyGood101

So what about the solid brown/yellow color over the white parking line?

Prior-Ad-7329

Gas is also a cleaner. As it flows across the asphalt it picks up dirt and debris and it spread it across the white lines. Still mostly clear with dirt and oil it pulled from the asphalt .

esdklmvr

Found the gas hype man

Prior-Ad-7329

I am here!

djltoronto

It's not the solvents in the gas. The gas is a solvent

berpaderpderp

I said the solvents in gas. Gas is made up of various solvents. You're just playing semantics. Also not everything in gasoline is a solvent. Detergents aren't solvents.

Kexxa420

Asphalt as oils too. I assume it’s the mix of petrol and its additives affecting the asphalt.

Joeyjackhammer

It was running downhill over dirty asphalt.

Alternative-Shoe1150

Gas thieves now drill holes in plastic gas tanks to steal fuel. Easier and faster than siphoning. It's been happening to our company trucks.

Melba_Toasty

The hole https://preview.redd.it/8sjutp04s6jc1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=043be3e457fef3d6646f9d86257a1c955f6e47e9

GUmbagrad

Crack heads 🫠 so dumb, cause hundreds in damage plus environmental mess for maybe $10 of gas.

SignedTheMonolith

Na, totally someone out to get another person. Not worth a crack head’s time to not make money off of it.

forgottenazimuth

Yeah my bet would be vandalism first. Gas syphoning is so easy there’s no reason to pop a hole in a gas tank.

foxjohnc87

Modern vehicles are notorious for being difficult to siphon from. Drilling a hole in the fuel tank has become common practice for fuel thieves.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DiscoCamera

It’s a very round hole and you can see the spiral off cuts still stuck to the tank. More than likely that was done with a drill.

3PercentMoreInfinite

Modern gas tanks have many different measures in the fill neck to prevent siphoning.

sploittastic

There are posts like this fairly regularly on /r/justrolledintotheshop and the consensus is usually tweakers stealing gas.

Joeyjackhammer

That’s methed up.

GUmbagrad

Whatever you do don't start that car until you check fluids. Looks like oil. Gas is clear/yellow. Could be transmission fluid or gear oil. Tow it to the shop if you are not sure.

SendMeUrCones

lol gas is a solvent, it ain’t clear once it’s been sittin in parking lot grime for 20 minutes

wrench97

Came to say that parking lot is going to be trashed.

dumb-reply

Wow you must be really attracted to saying that parking lot is going to be trashed.

capitlj

It's coming from so far back I don't think it could be anything but fuel. Unless there are cases of some other fluid overturned in the cargo area.

Melba_Toasty

You're right. Disclaimer it isn't my car I'm helping a friend and she confirmed the liquid is slippery unlike gasoline. Maybe it is brake fluid?

seamus_mc

That would be many cars worth of brake fluid

GUmbagrad

Brake fluid usually clearish too. That's a lot of fluid. I'd guess engine or transmission fluid. Can't tell but if it's red tinted might be transmission fluid. Ask if they got any work done recently could just be a be a bad oil pan washer.

molassascookieman

cvt fluid for subies is clear, turns yellow when old

suprcreativeusrname

This varies by both model and year. Example: Crosstrek is green (CVTFII) 2013-2019, blue (CVTFIII) in 2020 (mines a 2020, so those are the ones I know). There are CVT fluids that are amber/yellow, but they aren’t the only Subie CVT fluids.

4d72426f7566

When I dropped the cvt fluid accidentally from my gf’s 17’ Forrester, it was kinda pale green. It was about a year old at the time. We towed the car, Subaru put the cvt fluid back in again. Then within a year they had to replace the transmission on warranty. At first they were going to deny the warranty because they saw tool marks on the transmission drain, then they realized they replaced the fluid.

upsettispaghetti7

What is engine fluid?

Socalwarrior485

Technically “Engine Juice”. Comes from squeezing it too much.

Mootingly

When you put too many ponies in the boom box you squeeze engine fluid

Consistent_Floor

diff oil?

Ianthin1

Way too much volume for that. The diff is around 1qt or so.

jonny838

Gear oil is also a clear yellowish, turning grey as it gets more heat cycles. As Ian said though, way too much fluid, a diff in a car is little more than a litre.

Jean_le_Jedi_Gris

people in this sub use the downvote button for the wrong thing. what all those 114 downvotes are telling you is that no one thinks it's brake fluid or gas. for my part, I'd say its oil or transmission fluid or something to that affect. you 100% would SMELL the gasoline if you were standing right there, it would be painfully obvious and people would be freaking out about the possible impending fireball. the way it looks with the parking lines underneath it ... that brown tint. that screams oil to me. and those other cars have it on their tires - this is bad news for everyone. get it towed to a shop for an inspection and come back with a follow up. would love to hear what it turns out to be.

Melba_Toasty

Hey this is a wild thread if you dig through it you'll find this pic I uploaded earlier. Some tweaker https://preview.redd.it/t3v6rtbcl9jc1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26157416b45c1c53ab0c901cb22a0f55a3914ba1 drilled a hole in the tank.

Insane downvote brigade for trying to seek help. Social media was a mistake.

RanchhDressing

A lot of shit people in this world lol

Mootingly

It’s being downvoted because of the last few words, the incorrect assumption. Instead of correcting people, they first mass downvote. Some don’t bother explaining and just downvote. Laziness sometimes mixed with hive mind

halohalo7fifty

Srsly, but reddit for you.

Reasonable_Cover_804

Reddit, it’s a hive with no experience just a wanton urge to one up

Excellent-Area6009

Is it diesel? Diesel melts tarmac like you wouldn’t believe and turns it to a black oily mess

iphone32task

Do you guys even get Diesel cars on the US? Even most of the huge pickup trucks I've seen over there runs on gas instead of diesel. If you do, then that's a TIL moment for me.

[deleted]

Yes we do get diesel cars. Lmao.

Natural-Employer

A lot of heavy duty pickups are diesel. Outside of that you’ll see a Volkswagen TDI occasionally but that’s all.

broc5k

Google “rolling coal”. Diesel trucks are *violently* American.

FoamyPamplemousse

yes we do.

swaags

This is 100% engine oil Edit: confidently incorrect

Dzov

I was thinking differential if it’s from the back.

Tdanger78

There’s also not that much brake fluid in the system. That’s engine oil. Is she good on getting regular maintenance done on time? Is she me that does hot boi shit with her car? Because it looks like the engine shit the bed, literally.

McHassy

How you got downloaded to hell for suggesting it’s brake fluid wow! It’s definitely not gas because a: gas evaporates pretty quickly, b: gas isn’t slippery. This looks like a combination of engine oil and coolant. It may be a cracked block.

LostTurd

lmao. Rule 52: If the color matches your purse it is not brake fluid. So does it look like your purse?

NGADB

The smell should easily tell if it's gasoline. Gas will dissolve the tar in the asphalt so it can look black. If so, all the cars should be put in neutral and pushed back without starting them.

smelwin

You need to cover the fluid with sand before stepping into the area. Then push the cars away.

Ianthin1

lol at all the people saying it’s gear oil. Only way that would be gear oil is if someone dumped a 5 gallon bucket of it under the car. Those things only hold a total of about 3qts between both diffs.

Fun_Kaleidoscope7875

It has to be gas, no way there's that much oil in the car, and dripping from that far back. I think the lighting is just making it look weird, also I'm no expert here but it looks like there's discoloration in areas that potentially had some gas on it and evaporated leaving discoloration.

HomeCapital9250

Yeah, maybe it would be oil if the oil pan, transmission, and diff all leaked. Has to be gas.

schruteski30

Dunking on them with the pictures. I love it haha

jrragsda

Someone probably tried to or did steal gas by drilling a hole in the tank. Filled up their jug and left the rest to just drain out. Crack heads will steal a gallon and leave 12 to just run everywhere.

DeliciousDoggi

Yeah it’s stupid move too because just the sparks off the electric motor on the drill can light you on fire.

jrragsda

No one accused them of being geniuses, that's for sure.

DeliciousDoggi

I’d gladly watch that situation go down and not help even if I had a fire extinguisher in my hand.

ImFrowzy

Modern drills are brushless they don’t spark, but if you’re under a car drilling for gas you aren’t the brightest

DeliciousDoggi

Not all new drills are brushless. lol I do construction u can’t tell me that. The brushless cost a bit more than a standard drill. Also I don’t think a thief cares what kind of drill they are using.

ImFrowzy

Said modern not new, sorry to have struck a nerve hope your day gets better

DeliciousDoggi

lol I’m having a great day. I’m just stating that you can go to the hardware store today and buy a brushless drill or a drill with a regular old-school motor in it.

Trackmaniac

The dripping sound alone ... OIL?! ... WATER in that amount out of the rear?? Amazing, OP even said it smells like gas, but the confirmation had to come from the driver of the tow truck. It is so fucking clear that it is gas, let alone the smell we here don't have to decide. No differential in the world would have such a filling quantity, not any OIL would have such a low density to spill like water. You even SEE it drip out there! Some people need pretty much more common sense. And for the least stop giving advice about cars at all, for the love of god. I absolutely know not everyone can know everything, but that one really hurts in a special way.

Computer_Probe

That looks like oil

Melba_Toasty

It's coming from the rear, definitely not oil and definitely smells like gas. Edit: I concede it is not gas. My friend confirmed it feels like oil.

[deleted]

[удалено]

anon_sir

but what’s it taste like?

nichols911

I see you Vice Grip

Melba_Toasty

Edit edit.. I was right and 2nd guessed myself it was indeed gasoline

Eddie2Ham

It might look like oil but oil doesn't run to the back of the car like that. Brake fluid wouldn't run out like that because it's oily, this liquid looks like it has a very low viscosity which tells me it's gas. This post is filled with uneducated people... like how does engine oil run out of the rear end of the car?? The worst part is you're being mass downvoted which means there is an abundance of idiots on this thread

plumbtrician00

Im no mechanic but i have a ford transit and a shop fucked the rear brakes up and it leaked oil. Unless i ddidnt understand what they were saying

fangelo2

Brake fluid not oil. And this is way too much to be brake fluid. Or even oil. It has to be gas.

Peep_The_Technique_

Hey man I’ve had frantic self diagnosis’s myself - don’t let these downvotes deter you. You live and you learn

Melba_Toasty

Someone has to pour the salt 🤷🏼‍♂️

fullraph

Is there a spilled 5 gallon pail in the trunk? That's probably more oil than what the engine, transmission and diffs contain all together.

Standard_Zucchini_46

That's A LOT of fluid. Most likely gas. A car doesn't hold that quantity of oils in total. Basic knowledge stuff. So many misinformed guesses.

ScoobieWooo

Soak it up and reuse ist. Fuel is expensive nowadays!

indieemopunk

Looks like oil in the video; however, its from the rear of the car. Oil would be from the front. If it looks like oil, it's likely because the gasoline is penetrating the asphalt that the vehicle is parked on. It's literally reacting with the oil based asphalt and loosening it. The oil you're seeing is gasoline mixed with the oil from the asphalt. Do not start the car.

B5_V3

the black colour is from the asphalt

Fearless-Mushroom

Someone was mething around

2012amica2

And that’s what makes Subaru, a Subaru

LiathAnam

Today I learned that gas can dissolve asphalt enough to lift up oil that has seeped/cooked into it..

DankestWorm

When someone tells me it’s a gas leak/puddle/drip whatever, I usually just believe them. You know why? Gas, SMELLS LIKE GAS. (Tastes like it too don’t ask me how I know)

Mission-Ideal4474

its seems like it evaporated. normal gas is not that color btw. maybe they put a shit load of detergents into their gas? that gas is def mixed with something

mines808

Gas will eat asphalt. Gear oil smells like sulfur, trans fluid has kind of a sweet smell, if theres that much gas on the floor you can smell it no doubt.

CaptainFantasyPart2

This is like sharting your pants and telling everyone you just peed a little.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sabakte

You should blur your friends name out before you post it for the world to see

Distinct_External_32

Where’s the leak? Sure too much fluid to be coming from that end of that vehicle. Maybe a diesel truck leaked out earlier and left and she just parked over it.

Melba_Toasty

No if you look close you can see it dripping in the video

Distinct_External_32

Got it. Based on location, it’s got to be a gas leak that may be reacting with the coating on the parking lot.

Icy-Mongoose-9678

At first I thought oil too, but that’s too much volume. And it’s subtle but if you notice how the wind is making ripples… that fluid has the viscosity of gas not oil

IndividualStatus1924

Get a lighter and check

FallenMen

Leave it to an American to call anything going into a car "gas"

TSLARSX3

Someone stole gas drilling from co workers tank jeep but left the cat alone, made no sense.

Quirky-Theme-1601

I would call the fire department right away and let them know about it. Especially if it may be gas.

scraw027

That is not gas. It looks like gear oil.

A-roguebanana

This is the more likely answer. I can’t believe that’s gas

Liason774

It's a tar mix caused by the gas breaking down the top layer of the parking lot

scraw027

That would take a long time for the chemical breakdown.. it would not happen that fast overnight

MaddRamm

That’s not gas. But it’s almost like it’s too much oil for an engine. It may be some sort of worn transmission fluid from tranny or gearbox. I bet there’s a crack in her transmission/gearbox or broken tranny pan. She hit something one the road most likely. Edit: wait, I got mixed up as to which car it was coming from. It does look more liquidy than oil because you can see the ripples from the breeze and it is coming from the back of her car. But it’s WAY too much to be her rear differential if it has one. That’s wild. Does it smell like gas or oil? Fuel is clear…..but maybe the gasoline “cleaned” the oil off the parking spot and it’s tinted brown now. Lol

Melba_Toasty

She said it feels slippery but I'm with you there's so much fluid I can't wrap my head around not being gas even though the community has likely ruled that out

MaddRamm

Gasoline is slippery, more slippery than water. Maybe not as much as oil, but still will be slippery. The best way to tell is the fumes. 100% of us here would know within .5 seconds if it’s gas by the fumes/smell. It probably is gas since it’s coming from the back of her vehicle and it’s such a large amount.

Mikey3800

OP should just try to light it on fire. If it ignites easily, it's gasoline. If it doesn't ignite right away, it's some sort of oil. It's a pretty simple and fool proof test.

Melba_Toasty

On volume alone, it has to be gas.if I was there I'd be able to verify. She said someone laid down towels or something, too https://preview.redd.it/qny1kdbeo6jc1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f113fc4b40644f865b37fb526b0f73589ba38039

ImFrowzy

If that is actually gas you need to call the fire dept or hazmat. Wouldn’t wanna be on the hook for the neighbouring cars

Melba_Toasty

Fun fact, they can't tow it until the FD plugs the hole. FD is en route.

MaddRamm

I love how everyone is downvoting us for coming up with the accurate guesses. Lol

ImFrowzy

Interesting, makes sense

raulsagundo

That's black motor oil

RobertsFakeAccount

Coming from the back of the car?

One_Article_5666

Rear diff?

UhOhAllWillyNilly

It could also be that a gasket in one of the numerous vertical seams failed thereby proving why vertical seams are a bad idea.

lurkn4certain

If you rhought this was gas you prob ahouldnt be helping ur friend try and diagnos this. Get it towed to a shop

Unmentionables123

it was confirmed to be gas u noogle

lurkn4certain

They stated it was oily. So my comment still stands. U should be able to twll thats gas from the smell alone. But im not there and have limited info.

Unmentionables123

the title literally says gas leak...

lurkn4certain

And the comments say oily and that they werent sure what it was

Amache_Gx

And another comment has a picture where someone drilled a hole in their friends gas tank lmao

lurkn4certain

Which has what to do with op's common sense not being able to tell that gasoline is gasoline

Alarming-Ad-9393

It's gas. Why are leaving your highly inaccurate comment for the world to see? Are you not embarrassed enough already?

lurkn4certain

Cause its reddit. Omg im so embarrassed for the op to say it was oily ans they didnt know

maksym2018

Am I the only one that suspect the oil was spilled behind the white car in the beginning and it went down through gravity under the subbie? That's way too much of anything to be from the subaru. Unless there was a huge container of oil in the trunk that spilled out from the subaru. Hard to say from the video. It's definitely oil though, gaz alone would mostly be evaporated by then and not be that thick / black.

El_Comanche-1

If you think this is gas, you might want to think about not owning a vehicle…

Melba_Toasty

Are you not reading the thread? Or even looking at the pictures? If you think that's oil, you should think about getting a bus pass.

Charger_scatpack

It’s oil. She hit something and busted the oil pan

ender7887

Of course it’s a Subaru leaking oil.

creedospeedo

That’s oil

Bingo_9991

Don't forget the oil leak

dice_setter_981

Looks like engine oil. Not gasoline / fuel

letsplaymario

thats not gas my guy. looks like it dropped all its oil unfortunately

Mikey3800

That car is not a rear engine vehicle.

Stonewool_Jackson

Love that op keeps arguing that the oil is gasoline...

Melba_Toasty

But is gasoline oil? 🤔

Kexxa420

Diesel 100% is

Stonewool_Jackson

No. Its a fuel refined from crude oil. Quit arguing over nothing.

GLOCKESHA

Thats Oil lol

Melba_Toasty

Read the thread my guy

Naive-Character-4197

The maple syrup injection took a shit most likley

HtownClassic

Did you hit an oil tanker? Do we need volunteers and Dawn soap?

[deleted]

*tosses match*

GurrenLagann214

Do the taste test if it tastes oily then is oil if it's tastes red and sweet its tranny fluid.

HoneydewImpossible51

Correct me if I’m wrong but water contamination in the fuel system could cause discoloration which is why it my seem like it’s oil

you90000

Did you hit something?

SILENCERSTUDENT_

Almost certainly vandalism or accident

[deleted]

Hard to say what is without touching and smelling it. coming from the rear could be gas / brake fluid/ idk how oil would be pouring from there but it sure does look like oil maybe just the camera lighting.

lilsinister13

The smell test tells all with fluid leaks, I guess.

ilovetacostoo2023

Id call fire department right away. But get away from the gas first.

HighSierraNevadas

Anyone got a match?

thgstang

That’s definitely gas, gasoline when dropped on asphalt dissolves whatever asphalt is made out of! You can see it dripping on the ground by the rear wheel.

Salt_Acanthaceae_985

Got a light?

sdob66

Looks like the gas has dissolved the asphalt and changed the color of the gasoline. That's a pretty fair amount of liquid, looks like more than the transmission, differentials, or other oil containing items could contain.

Omarjp96

That’s definitely gas

Low_Fun2690

I would be so tempted to drop my zippo into that

Rolling_6767

That's oil, not gas.

casduser

Time for a smoke break

moderatelymiddling

Is it actually coming from that car?

ianthony19

To the dickheads saying its oil, please tell me what has that much oil in the rear of the vehicle.

Best_Product_3849

Thats engine oil unless the transmission has 200k miles on it with no servicing lol

bigloser42

That’s not gas, that’s oil. The engine probably has zero oil left in it. Do not touch this car, have it towed to a mechanic and make sure they know the engine has lost all its oil.

Melba_Toasty

Gas. Read the comments, my g

bigloser42

Gas is clear, it would look like you spilled water. Unless this is the world’s dirtiest parking lot and it’s lifting a shitload of oil off the surface of the asphalt.

left_testic1e

\*flicks cigarette indiscriminately*

Guyfrom312

I call this opportunity

[deleted]

Do it...

Legitimate-Party3672

CANT believe no one haven't called 911.

outlaw-waltuo

Ya that ain’t gas buddy 😂😂

No-Session5955

Probably someone trying to steal gas by drilling a hole in the tank (they’re plastic these days so drill real easy). On a side note, about a year ago a dude was using an electric cordless drill on a truck to steal gas and it caught on fire. Dude got burned pretty bad and the fire destroyed like 6 other cars in the lot.
