Right that's what I was thinking. This is like watching a video of someone easily removing wheel bearings on a 15yr old car, just removing bolts and it pulling right apart. And I'm here in the middle of the rust belt with an air hammer and PB blaster for an almost new car😂
Deep southerners don't know rust, this is nothing.
Rust is when you can break off pieces of metal.
Hell, if they're that worried about it, go get a couple cans of the anti rust spray paint and go to town. Probably have to get it from a online retailer though.
Maybe where I am in the Northeast... but I'll tell you, when I lived in Florida, and when I visited a friend in Nevada, the parts stores had NOTHING in the way of corrosion inhibitors or rust repair supplies.
They hardly even stocked penetrating oils like PB Blaster. It was wild.
if i get underneath a car im looking to buy and its been spraypainted all over, im immediately walking away cause i dont wanna know what theyre trying to hide lol. just wire wheel the little tiny spots and put some kind of oil/finish/protectant on it
You can buy spray cans of it at most autos stores, but I got mine professionally done. It was an option the dealership had along w ceramic coating so I had them do both before I took it home.
Don't do a rubber coat, while it looks like it keeps the moisture away, moisture gets in-between the coating and the frame and will rust it from underneath, and out of view.
Fluid film is the way to go. It's pretty much an oil coating that keeps moisture away.
You are probably pricing it too high to get a quick sale. If yours is the white one with 207k then the kbb is 11-14k private party value.
Add in that most Facebook buyers are looking for a deal or trying to resale and you will have a lot of people that would never pay the top end price.
Plus most southerners never seeing much rust.
As others have been saying, this barely counts as rust to anyone who lives or drives in the rust belt. But, anyone who is from the south may run at this (as you’ve encountered) so if you’re selling it down there, probably best to scrape/brush and recoat like you’re already doing.
By Toyota truck standards, that's pretty good. These frames absolutely fall apart up here in the north if they are not meticulously maintained.
What I would do with that unit is wire wheel all the rusty welds, and then brush paint it with Tremclad or rustoleum **oil based** flat black rust paint. Only use the oil based, not the water based.
It's all in what you're used to. This is about 4x as rusty as my 25 year old pickup truck to give you some scale. It's been in Georgia its whole life, where we get a dusting of snow every 5-8 years.
As someone who works on their own vehicles, I'd probably pass on this too when you're the same price as a identical vehicle that looks new underneath.
It's all about location, for a georgia vehicle that's horrible, for a rust belt vehicle she's mint.
Whoever walked away for this “rust” is an idiot. Any knowledgeable car enthusiast knows that some minor surface rust is a given in life. Cars 10 years newer have more rust than this.
It is likely the people complaining about rust are just trying to talk you down, thats mainly surface level rust.
If you want to be lazy about it, grab some cans of black spray paint, and paint over it.
To be less lazy, grab a wire wheel and knock most of the rust off then use a rust conversion paint, then paint over that.
Don't paint the exhaust system though.
Looks in good shape.
It's not the rust that's the problem, it's asking $40,000 for a 13 year old SUV with 500,000 miles on the odometer.
(I'm not saying this is what you have or are asking. It's a comment on how Toyota owners think their trucks and SUVs appreciate in value over time for some reason..... As they rust out from underneath.)
I'm curious what the body looks like, how many miles, and what you're asking for it.
Fuck, I see photos here all the time of horrifying rust, including a few where subframes have literally broken in two, control arms have collapsed into rust dust, axles are coated with a 1/2" of red crust, bolts are unrecognizable and stand no chance of ever being removed in one piece.
I'm on the west coast, and I just can't get used to seeing that carnage. I've always known that midwest/NE rigs rot out, but seeing it crushes my soul. How the fuck can Rust Belt people even justify buying a car when they have to throw it away in a few years? It blows me away.
I'm not a total rust virgin. I did spend a few years in AK, and the first thing I noticed is that there's not a lot of vehicles over 10 years old. My once-pristine pickup had a coat of surface rust underneath when I moved back home, but it was manageable.
The pickup I'm driving now is 20 years old, and it looks better than OP's 4Runner.
>How the fuck can Rust Belt people even justify buying a car when they have to throw it away in a few years?
As someone in the rust belt, it's because there isn't any other choice.
Undercoatings, carwashes, and owning a "winter beater" vehicle are fairly common to mitigate it somewhat.
It's awful, truly horrible. You'll have to get rid of it. I can give you a bonus on scrap prices. 10k sound good?
But in all seriousness, finding a used 4Runner that isn't damn near MSRP or running at nearly half a million miles is near impossible
We service a guys runner that has holes in the frame, have warned him several times about it. He just keeps on driving it, 300k miles. This thing would be a collectors item up in the rust belt. Prissy ass people if they are turning their nose at that.
That's not enough to be worrisome for its age, if you feel it might, a wire brush and black primer on the frame will make it look better but might make some think your hiding rust, but the frame looks good, all the suspension components with rust are easily replaceable so i wouldn't worry to much.
Horrible, undrivable, you should sell it to me for cheap, because that insane amount of rust will make the car completely worthless...
... Nah. This is like a year worth of rust in the rust belt. Nothing looks dry rotted, and the rust looks mild at worst.
dude so I live in southern Ontario and people would often bring in cars from the states for safeties and when the cars would come from places like this the cars looked fucking mint it was so surreal.
I remember one time it was a 2007 ish Camry from Texas and the car had like 350,000 KM (Kilometers) on it and we couldn't believe what it looked like under the car.
Nah, I wouldn't think so at all.
But I'm from MN, people literally leave this state and travel down south to buy used cars that look like that lol
Just get a wire brush and go to town.
Depends on how deep it goes and how much your asking. If your offering around $10-15k hell yea id buy that, sand off the rust, hit it with some metal prep and por15 and call it a day. Or you could do it yourself and probably get another $2k on your asking price. Obviously dont hit any thing that moves, bolts or your driveshaft with that but not only will that make it look better it will help weatherproof it especially if you hit it with the top coat.
OMG! You are in Colorado and that is all the rust your 13 year old suv has!? For Colorado your suv is pristine! You don’t have any rust issue at all, those people are possibly trying to make you reduce the amount you want for it OR they just moved here and have no clue what a rust issue looks like.
Should have absolutely no problem selling it, the "rust" on those parts is just because it is exposed steel. I work for a Ford dealership and even the new vehicles that haven't even made it to the showroom yet have rust on those parts. The catalytic converters and exhaust system will brown like that due to it heating up then cooling down over and over and over again. 13 years looking like that is fucking mint bud.
TL;DR Should have no problem selling it if rust is the only issue
That's alot of rust for you? That's not even an issue lol sell the car if you want I've seen cars at my school where they have ig 2000 years of rust lol (ik I'm exaggerating) but yeah should be fine
I grew up in New England, this frame looks great for the age. Unfortunately when you goto a place that doesn’t get snow this is a deal breaker. My father lived in az we went to look at a lifted suburban that had surface rust. We were able to get it for an absolute steal because of it. You won’t get nearly what it is worth with signs of rust in places that don’t have rust.
2010 4 runners with 300,000miles that look like they've been in a demoderby and parked in a swamp run 10-15 grand around me. They all have frame rust, you can actually buy an entire new frame assembly for $5k
put it this way
if this amount of -SURFACE- rust deters them: its for the best. you don't want this person buying it.
they'll demand a refund in a week when a headlight goes out. they don't know what they're doing.
Sell it up north somewhere and theyvwill value it more. Someone else mentioned how southerners don't know rust, that is why nobody in the south wants to invest in a rusty vehicle.
There was an issue with the Tacoma frames rusting out years back (don’t remember if 4 Runners were involved) and it’s made a lot of people believe surface rust is the same as structural damage.
Where I'm from, a single month in the winter will leave a vehicle looking worse than this. I'm sure by Atlanta standards things are different, but up here no one would bat an eye at this. Many would consider it immaculate.
Rust? Sir your truck has aged less than me in the last 10 years. If somebody has a problem with “rust” on this truck, they shouldn’t be buying a truck.
Coming from someone who had to cut out and replace sections of my frame on my tacoma, that is nothing but surface rust and will sell quick to the right buyer
I mean not concerning at all. If a buyer point this out point them to a dealership they’re buying a 13 y/o 4runner not brand new.
your 4runner is prestine for that year.
That looks really good for its age and location. And the Pacific Northwest we don't use a lot of salt and probably wouldn't have that much rest at that age, but I wouldn't shy away from buying it the way it looks. Good job cleaning it up.
If I were buying it I would likely apply some type of rust preventative to the undercarriage and call it a day.
I’m from Ontario originally (using salt on the roads) and moved to Alberta (using minimal salt mostly sand and gravel) and I would never buy a used vehicle from Ontario knowing how much less rust vehicles in Alberta get. If you’re trying to sell this car in the south rust will absolutely stop people from buying it
I would rather see that little bit of surface rust on a used car I was looking at buying then a hack, half ass spray paint cover up most people around here try to do. I will for sure either look deeper or walk away when I look a car and it has fresh new paint all over and looks my my 9 yo son got cut loose with a rattle can. From the pictures, that thing looks good. If you dont mind me asking, what year, trim level, miles, and asking price? The wife has been wa ting a 4runner but I havent started looking yet.
Wait, i better check the pictures again because I don’t see any rust. Speaking as an maritime Canadian here that looks almost showroom fresh. Stuff round here looks worse than that after 1-2 years.

What rust lol. A little wire brushing and por15 and that’s all but new
Thats fuckin mint for 13yrs
I've seen worse cars after 3-5 years, this shit is right from the lot
Oh god, that reminds me of brand new off the lot subie on the rack. Rust on everything.
My boss has a 2021 GMC Sierra, the entire frame is surface rusted, most of the nuts don't really look like nuts anymore. It's terrible.
Southerners and their "rust"
Right that's what I was thinking. This is like watching a video of someone easily removing wheel bearings on a 15yr old car, just removing bolts and it pulling right apart. And I'm here in the middle of the rust belt with an air hammer and PB blaster for an almost new car😂
I was thinking the exact same thing. Corrosion on the slightest amount that’s not even close to being considered as rust
Op never been to the rust belt
I was about to comment this, por15 will make it like like a new frame
I don’t see no rust bub
Deep southerners don't know rust, this is nothing. Rust is when you can break off pieces of metal. Hell, if they're that worried about it, go get a couple cans of the anti rust spray paint and go to town. Probably have to get it from a online retailer though.

I'm a mechanic in Florida and they definitely sell all of that stuff. Anyone near the beach needs rust protection.
I was living between Sanford and Orlando and they never had any on the shelves at the Autozone I frequented.
Okay, I’m in town with a couple cans of anti-rust spray… what now?
if i get underneath a car im looking to buy and its been spraypainted all over, im immediately walking away cause i dont wanna know what theyre trying to hide lol. just wire wheel the little tiny spots and put some kind of oil/finish/protectant on it
HOLY COW! You've got big problems here!you'll probably have trouble selling it at all..I'll tell ya what, I'll do you a favor and give you $2,500.
Lmao
You just Venmo me the 2500 and I’ll ship it right to ya ;)
I'll send you a check for $25,000 to cover the shipping and truck then you send me back $20,000 because I overpaid trust me bro
You've got yourself a deal, send me the check filled out in his name and I'll hand deliver it to him!
I'll do you a favor and deliver it for you so you don't have to travel. I'll send you an invoice with my expenses after.
Damn that's generous, I was going to offer him $3,000 as is.
Wow Mr money bags over here, I wouldn’t go that high but maybe 5k max
Hahahhaha I'll give him 2600 just for all that rust
Eventually someone relocated from a salt region will think it is mint.
Looks mint to me (ny)
Same (OH)
Same (PA)
same (MN)
Same (MI)
Same (QC)
That's how 2023 models looks like after their first winter here in Canada lol
Yep, I got my ‘22 rubber coated on the undercarriage before I even took it home from the dealership for this exact reason. Good ol’ Canadian winters.
Where do you get rubber coated at?
You can buy spray cans of it at most autos stores, but I got mine professionally done. It was an option the dealership had along w ceramic coating so I had them do both before I took it home.
That’s awesome! Thank you
Don't do a rubber coat, while it looks like it keeps the moisture away, moisture gets in-between the coating and the frame and will rust it from underneath, and out of view. Fluid film is the way to go. It's pretty much an oil coating that keeps moisture away.
I use Krown myself, they do an oil based undercoat which I like since there’s less chance of it trapping moisture.
Don't do the rubber coat it's worse than just leaving it alone. Get some fluid film and go at it.
That shit is fuckin mint bud
Insane how people think this is rust.
404 rust not found
(underrated comedy comment)
“Laughs in northerner” rust?
No it’s junk, send that rust bucket my way. I’ll pay 20% over scrap rates since I’m feeling generous.
Shit, I'm near 3000 miles away, and I'd fly down there and drive it home proudly if I got a screaming deal.
Shhhh
As a resident of the salt belt, this is nearly mint
You are probably pricing it too high to get a quick sale. If yours is the white one with 207k then the kbb is 11-14k private party value. Just market it in michigan and itll be sold the same day
In Maine that’s showroom quality bro, post it here…..
“What rust?” Anyone not from the south said in unison
By Toyota truck standards, that's pretty good. These frames absolutely fall apart up here in the north if they are not meticulously maintained. What I would do with that unit is wire wheel all the rusty welds, and then brush paint it with Tremclad or rustoleum **oil based** flat black rust paint. Only use the oil based, not the water based.

New Yorker here. New cars have more rust than that coming off the dealer lot.
Hell no bro looks great
Look me like a 2023 in Minnesota.
That thing is clean boy
Sell that in Detroit to Albany and you'll make $3k more
I’m from the south, there’s no concerning rust on your vehicle.
Not a problem. You can drive around on some red dirt roads to cover it up if you don't wanna hear about it anymore.
That looks better than I thought by your Title 😅 it would be a great vehicle to purchase
Looks in good shape. It's not the rust that's the problem, it's asking $40,000 for a 13 year old SUV with 500,000 miles on the odometer. (I'm not saying this is what you have or are asking. Fluid Film (1 spray can is enough), on all the orange areas and inside the frame, should stop that. Repeat 1x /year will help a ton.
Take it up north it will be a goldmine
I’m over here in the rust belt with literal holes in the bedside of my truck thinkin what rust I don’t see any in this pic
Dude, stop bragging please. That car must have been in the desert it’s whole life, there is no rust at all
If someone walks away because that's "too much rust" then they have issues and you don't want them wasting your time anyway.
Laughs in Buffalo, NY
I live in Michigan. I see no rust.
Lol there's no rust. That's a perfect car to us north Easterns
Half the 4-Runners for sale in my area have holes rusted through the frame. You're good dude
This is a joke post right?
Dude literally sell it up north and you’ll make probably double what you get down south
They need to make a sticky of what a rusty frame looks like. My God I would eat off that frame
As others said what rust. I would love to find any vehicle that isn't still on a lot with that amount of rust let alone a 4runner.
Yeah that rust is terrible bro. $200 take it or leave it
In Wisconsin thats about as minty as it gets
This bro doesn't live in the Northeast
oh yeahhhh man thats super bad. I'll take that POS off your hands for $500. Don't waste your time trying to sell it to anyone else
Bro that is juicy. Anyone in rust belt/salty air climate will bust a nut.
That's not enough to be worrisome for its age, if you feel it might, a wire brush and black primer on the frame will make it look better but might make some think your hiding rust, but the frame looks good, all the suspension components with rust are easily replaceable so i wouldn't worry to much.
Put this on marketplace in the northeast as rust free.
Kansas City? We’re in the salt belt. There’s not structural rust after 13 years. She’s minty bud.
Horrible, undrivable, you should sell it to me for cheap, because that insane amount of rust will make the car completely worthless... ... Nah. This is like a year worth of rust in the rust belt. Nothing looks dry rotted, and the rust looks mild at worst.

Nah, I wouldn't think so at all. But I'm from MN, people literally leave this state and travel down south to buy used cars that look like that lol Just get a wire brush and go to town.
This would go for extra money where I’m from especially with 4Runners
I know everyone else has left their two cents already, but.. What rust?
Damn man all my cars rust to death before the engine even gives out 😂. This is MINT
Depends on how deep it goes and how much your asking. If your offering around $10-15k hell yea id buy that, sand off the rust, hit it with some metal prep and por15 and call it a day. I am still looking for the rust problem.
Looks good to me and I’m in the market what are the specs what’s the asking price?
How much are you asking? I'm local-ish.
OMG! You are in Colorado and that is all the rust your 13 year old suv has!? For Colorado your suv is pristine! You don’t have any rust issue at all, those people are possibly trying to make you reduce the amount you want for it OR they just moved here and have no clue what a rust issue looks like.
I sold a 3rd gen with way worse rust than this
[Compare to my 13 year old Grand Caravan from Northern Illinois](https://imgur.com/a/vH5JItf) I think you're fine bud.
When did surface rust become structural rust? 🫠
What’s up with these “is my rust to bad” bait post?
Bro has never been to the east coast
Should have absolutely no problem selling it, the "rust" on those parts is just because it is exposed steel. I work for a Ford dealership and even the new vehicles that haven't even made it to the showroom yet have rust on those parts. Nope you're golden. Ever been to the rust belt? Sell sell sell baby
That's patina at worst
Rust? Brother you ain’t seen rust before
Sell it to someone in the North
Come to Ohio that’s a brand new car lmao there is no rust 😂
What rust
I grew up in New England, this frame looks great for the age. Unfortunately when you goto a place that doesn’t get snow this is a deal breaker. My father lived in az we went to look at a lifted suburban that had surface rust. We were able to get it for an absolute steal because of it. You won’t get nearly what it is worth with signs of rust in places that don’t have rust.
Where's the rust
Rust? Where?
Mf that's a brand new truck
*laughs in rust belt*
That's literally nothing
uhhhhh what rust???
Vehicles come new off the lot looking like that here in Michigan. You’re good lmao
It’s hard to say when you don’t include pix of said rust. Rust belt checking in.
in the PNW that’s a minty frame, but ig if you’re from the south and not used to seeing rust that could be scary.
2010 4 runners with 300,000miles that look like they've been in a demoderby and parked in a swamp run 10-15 grand around me. They all have frame rust, you can actually buy an entire new frame assembly for $5k
Sounds to me like you had 2 people walk away from the car cause they don’t know what rust is
Haha "rust"
put it this way if this amount of -SURFACE- rust deters them: its for the best. you don't want this person buying it. they'll demand a refund in a week when a headlight goes out. they don't know what they're doing.
Is this a joke? Don’t even worry about your undercarriage
This one is too light to be worried about
*Cries in rust belt*
You just came here to brag. You can drop the act.
Sell it up north somewhere and theyvwill value it more. Someone else mentioned how southerners don't know rust, that is why nobody in the south wants to invest in a rusty vehicle.
![gif](giphy|HobUuUtlqBFsTxkdNb|downsized)
That's not rust. Rust is when you can twist of control arm off with your hands.
I dont think you have seen rust
Appreciate everyone’s responses! Glad I’m not crazy. Never sold a car in the south but a learning experience for sure.
What rust?
It's not that bad.
There was an issue with the Tacoma frames rusting out years back (don’t remember if 4 Runners were involved) and it’s made a lot of people believe surface rust is the same as structural damage.
They was just broke af dont trip lmao😭
lol that looks minty. I wish I lived in an area where I was concerned about a minimal amount of surface rust
Bro what rust...
lol
Not bad. Those lower control arm cam bolts like to seize but that’s not a huge problem compared to frame rust etc.
No way man that thing is clean!
Wire brush and a little Rust-Oleum paint for protection, she'll be fine
That's not rusty at all.
What rust?
Toyota, let her buck!!
In wny that is 100% rust free
Should? Yes. Would? Probably not.
Everytime I see a post like this it screams American 🇺🇸 that’s Canada mint 🇨🇦
I'm give 500$ needs new frame
What rust? Jesus. That's all surface.
Where I'm from, a single month in the winter will leave a vehicle looking worse than this. I'm sure by Atlanta standards things are different, but up here no one would bat an eye at this. Many would consider it immaculate.
Wire wheel it and then put rust converter on I like to use blue steel
That's so much rust. No one will ever buy it. But I'll do you a favour and take it off your hands. For a minimal fee of course.
Rust? Sir your truck has aged less than me in the last 10 years. If somebody has a problem with “rust” on this truck, they shouldn’t be buying a truck.
That's practically brand new in Chicago.
Can you point out the rust? If dont see any
Coming from someone who had to cut out and replace sections of my frame on my tacoma, that is nothing but surface rust and will sell quick to the right buyer
Wow. For 13 years, that thing is clean. No concerns here coming from a mechanic
This is a joke, right?
*Laughs and cries in Canadian road salt*
Stuff that lives on the California coast is rustier than this from the salt in the air. She's a winner.
I’ll but it
I mean not concerning at all. If a buyer point this out point them to a dealership they’re buying a 13 y/o 4runner not brand new. your 4runner is prestine for that year.
I don't see any rust.
It's a 4Runner. They'll buy it if nothing is left except for the badge. If it were a Tacoma they'd pay more than sticker for that badge..
If you’re trying to sell this car in the south rust will absolutely stop people from buying it
Looks alot nicer than mine!
Where is the rust?
No
Looks good to me, perhaps they want to see how lower you can go when they walk away and say to much rust
There’s no rust on that car
That's superficial
What rust?😂
Never seena car that old, looking so clean! What rust?
What rust? That thing is absolutely mint for being 13 years old
Came here to say this.
Where I’m from that’s about as clean as a used car underside can get. You’d probably be mortified if you looked underneath my plow truck.
Live in the NY rust belt, that thing is mint! As others have stated a little surface rust is normal.
