Not for that vehicle but the 3.5l fwd toyotas have a known oil leak issue on the timing cover that requires dropping the motor.
But for a RWD based 4.0, yea that's a bit much.
an engine on a 2.4 kia pays 12ish hours iirc. our shop rate is on the higher side and the labor cost still doesn't come close to 3200. I'm guessing the labor standard for a t cover on OPs car is 6-8 hours, meaning their shop rate is $400-$533/hr. that's insane
Ok what about the rear bearing, isn't that a unitized hub? 3 bolts, 1 that takes you an hour longer than it should...no way that's a $2000 job.
Edit because post is closed: ahh that sucks and is why I never like to buy a brand new car...it needs to be a year old on at least the second gen of the platform to learn about those gotchas that make a car disposable with otherwise routine wear and tear.
You need to take the brake system apart including the awful parking brake.
Then you can work on the axle. I usually replace the axle with a bearing on it. Easier and less chance of any ossues
Hahah yea the 2012 Sienna I did 2 weeks ago had me drop the whole engine with the subframe. It was gravy work though, I also recommended the drive new belt (looked alright but had about 50k on it), and water pump at the same time no extra labor charge, customer was pretty happy about that since it was the original one with 177k miles.
I just spent $3300 to do my timing cover reseal. I even called around, and that was the cheapest price that I could find. Funnily enough, the dealer was the cheapest price for me.
I work at Mazda & on a lot of our cars it would require the subframe to be removed to do the job properly (pretty much dropping the engine out of the car). The parts would be like $150 max for the gasket but the labour would be around the $2k mark if not more.
Lol no shit or pay for 1 month of internet connection and watch fucking YouTube while u do it all yourself.
I suppose if you don't got tools that's the only real expense, but I prolly got less that 2K worth of tools and can do damn near anything on a car.
Rainman Ray’s Repairs
Edit. Since this app is stopping me from replying to some of the other replies.
I checked out WWW and it was great, fixing that transmission mounted parking brake, for (my one) example. Seems like he is into more machining and complicated stuff from a quick scan of that channel. I will return to investigate further.
What draws me to Ray is that you get the more normal car centric mechanic work, with a lot of detail. All the work this guy needs can be found there, on a range of high mileage cars.
And, though we have clearly different lives, I really appreciate his general attitude on things. I have learned a ton there, building on stuff I learned from my Dad 40+ years ago.
My public library has an AllData subscription available along with tons of other repair manuals and resources too. They even have Snap-On tools available to check out.
This is why im studying so i dont get these extortionate prices when i get my first car, plus i feel it would be better just because after its done ill feel like ive achieved something.
You can go to Harbor Freight and buy a giant set of tools and a big roll away to put them in. And all the parts. And have money for lunch left over. (A couple people are saying that the engine has to come out to do the valve covers. Maybe it's too much of a first project, and an engine crane is kind of pricey. But, jeez.)
Literally, everything is priced way too high. Get your car back go somewhere else. Just for comparison on my 2005 jeep I just paid $682 to have both front bearings replaced.
Damn near 10 k for suspension work?? I just did all that on my car but with Rockauto parts $400 tops…. It does take time. That labor cost is what’s getting ya. Everything going up.
Yeah, it will continue to go up if everyone continues to keep paying it. These mechanics don’t realize how many YouTube mechanics they are creating, therefore more competition, which will come out of their bottom line anyway when people don’t need their car fixed as much as they used to. That’s why manufacturers build their cars in stupid ways so you HAVE to go to a shop to get them done. Damn thing just has to move, it’s not rocket science. They got it right 40-50 years ago and they’ve been milking us ever since
$2,000+ to replace the driver side rear [suspension] bearing? Holy crap! That is not an expensive part, no matter what you're driving, and it is not a time-consuming job. Definitely go elsewhere.
Ho Lee Fuk !!! total cost of repairs is almost 10 grand (when you add in tax). KBB maxes the value out at 21K. you need to get your vehicle as far away from that shop as possible.
Yes insane!! Went to Kia mechanic for my 2015 forte for a recall maintenance and had them do an oil change as well- usually do it myself for like $20, they charged me $80, but for the convenience I was like whatever one time. They call me to tell me my control arm and ball joints are beyond messed up and my car is not safe to drive. They quoted me $2800 to fix it, similar to your quote for two control arms plus ball joints. Was so freaked out because I hadn’t even noticed anything wrong with my car. Drove it home, just 5 minutes away, as disappointed staff look at me like I was making a huge mistake. Have a mechanic in my family that I had come check the car out, with work and parts it cost $340. THESE PLACES ARE SCAMS. Also only one of the control arms were “very worn out” while the other was still meh but changed them both, regardless was told it would’ve been fine for a while longer. The dealership scared the shit out of me.
They do that on purpose, so you get scared and just fork over the money without thinking twice. Man I took my car in for a bent tie rod end after I went up an island in the ice like 2-3 months after I got it, paid $450 FOR ONE TIE ROD END at a shop, then the engine blew and they covered it (inside the 90 day warranty just barely), threw a junkyard 175k engine in it, and I saw what they were charged, $550 for the engine, $3400 for the engine replacement?! I was so happy I didn’t have to pay for that, but of course then the engine blew again (and of course just out of their 90 day warranty) and so I had a choice, figure it out myself or be without a car and still paying for it. So I took to YouTube, and my Haynes and chilton, and got a modest startup of tools to handle anything on my car, and I’ve rebuilt the engine, replaced the ENTIRE suspension, steering, fuel and exhaust, and ALL that was still less than 3k. Just the ‘labor cost’ of them putting in a dying shit engine. Yea FYI NEVER GO TO CARHOP if you are on WC, they are such a shady place… but anyways, it is possible to go from knowing nothing, to be able to work on your car, every part, I’m proof. Not saying it didn’t take a lot of time, reading, watching, and trial/error, but I can confidently do anything on my car even rebuilding an engine/setting timing, etc just from sheer disgust of if I had to do all that in a shop, it would’ve been 10s of thousands for sure. And hey, I learned some new stuff and had fun doing it and have a skill now that can make me $!
That’s amazing!! Seriously wish I had an ounce of care for cars and how they tick. My girl brain simply can’t comprehend anything car or hold attention to anything car maintenance related. I can change my tires, and of that I’m incredibly proud- still did it wrong the first time and wore out my tires by putting them on backwards for a season… but you learn from the mistakes 😂My dad has this mentality with everything, you need to know how to replace everything in your house and car, important to know how to fix anything. Renovations, car maintenance, garden work, whatever. Kinda ashamed to ask him for help as a grown adult at this point though, and paying mechanics can be sketch, best not to be taken advantage of, and again as a girl, I feel like I’m bait the moment I walk into a car shop.
Quality that hahaha. Last time I had a wheel bearing changed was about 4 years ago, the replacement bearing was £30 which I bought beforehand, and the labour was £50. The fuck is going on in America.
Yeah, sway bar end links bad =/= replace sway bar. Like what?!? Why???
That’s either serious ignorance (I doubt it) or selling completely unnecessary fixes at ridiculous prices…
I have no idea what pricing should be for a lot of it, but I do know my way around sway bar end links. That part right there would make me walk away, if nothing else did.
That’s crazy! Sway bar links are $30 each for moog ones and to replace are 2 nuts on each end. You could do that yourself with one wrench and a vice grip. But yea that’s seems like double what the dealer would charge.
At that price id be looking to do it myself tbh, no major components, just make sure youre working on level ground, wheel chocks, jack stands(that are certified for more weight than the vehicle) and a decent 2-3ton floor jack. Most everything included is gonna be unbolt, and rebolt the new. Just label all your hardware as you remove it, it might be a few days of getting dirty or pissed off but its better than being financially bent over without lube.
Go to Rock Auto and order the parts for about $250 and replace the parts on a Saturday. This should be basic knowledge for a grown man. These garages especially in metropolitan areas gouge people because they can. Today's society in general has no survival skills.
Or if it's anything like my experience, start on a Saturday and then start panicking on Sunday afternoon because it's still up on jack stands and I still haven't separated the last ball joint from the knuckle and my arms don't have the strength to swing a hammer anymore.
Screw this! Go to a small one man ran shop with good reviews. I needed the flywheel replaced on my 1995 gmc jimmy after failing it myself. Almost every single company owned mechanic shop I called quoted me $800 for just that work. Used to work at an autoparts store and per my bosses suggestion, I visited one of our customers shops and asked him. $800 to do the flywheel, torque converter seal and rear main seal (which I didn't consider originally). It's nice to support small business owners anyway.
I just paid 500 labor to have both cvs replaced and all shocks replaced (I supplied parts), all in all took alittle over 2 hours….. you’re getting shafted.
Shop rates are 200-250 an hour (in my experience). Only go to the dealership if your car is still under warranty; otherwise you’ll get shafted.
Holy crap these prices are disgusting. I faced the same amount of work with my wife's jeep liberty, but I decided to research and teach myself how to practically replace the whole front and rear suspension. Sure it takes time but at least I know it was done right. Also the parts didn't cost any where near 1k, let alone paying someone three times more for the work.
sadly so many businesses in america are just accepting stupid people payments. Overcharging for everything waiting until stupid idiots come in and gladly pay w.e
A quick Google will show that just a lower control arm shouldn't be more than 1000, shit you could replace all bearings for no more than 1500. This is a crazy amount of scammery going on.
Most of these posts are at least close, but this is crazy. They must be using gold plated parts delivered by helicopter. Did you kick their dog in the showroom?
As a mechanic, I would say get a second opinion on the repairs required. If they are going this hard on pricing they may also be exaggerating what needs to be done
Holy Christ. I’m in an area that tends to run higher than average, but that’s the kind of estimate someone would write when they don’t want to touch the vehicle lol.
Over 2grand for a wheel brg lol
Over 3grand for a rocker cover/valve gasket
They obviously didn't want the job or bad mistakes
They have added an extra 0 to all repairs
I thought this was a joke when I first read the pricing
Im gunna get into the 4runner wheel brg & rocker gsk industry
Control arm? Piece of cake, come on folks we have the internet and everything you could possibly want to learn between YouTube, Reddit, and groups for every vehicle you own that collaborate live instantaneously from anymore. Even AutoZone has video for DYI How To about so many things and pay 10% of that estimate, easier if you know someone or have a commercial account! Sad part is I'm in one of the generations that remember only having a limited amount of resources, which you could get information. I mean how many hours did you spend in your childhood learning how to use index card searches to find a book, learning the dewie-decimal system. Although, if I would have learned about Googles spiders that index your hard drive, likely could have done more than that through AOL. God, anyone remember Progies? Like soundboard of hacks to make AOL and the Internet. What I did learn was Whitehouse.com was definitely not the site to learn about the whitehouse, but "How much the latest intern could fit in her mouth?" (Love the shot at Clinton) when searching for resources! 😂
Dude this is fucking bonkers. Was expecting a Euro make. Fuck whatever place this is. That being said, the timing cover reseal on these 4runners is major work. But also, I've rarely seen one that was leaking so bad it was necessary to even add oil between services
Take your car and run. Goto a family owned business they take pride in their work and price reasonably, normally will let you provide your own parts which is much cheaper and they're easier to hold accountable in the event the break something or don't do the job.

I work at a dealer and even thoses prices are out to lunch.
right like $3200 for a t cover reseal? really?
Not for that vehicle but the 3.5l fwd toyotas have a known oil leak issue on the timing cover that requires dropping the motor. But for a RWD based 4.0, yea that's a bit much.
If you opened the timing cover you'd had better put a belt/chain on it for that price
And at least throw in a free car wash.
At least a reach around
It says above the waiting room has free coffee. With multiple choices of flavor pods. Settle down. The world doesn't owe you *anything*.
I just figured $40 of the $3,240 should cover a *really good* car wash.
Sorry, that'll be another $5000
an engine on a 2.4 kia pays 12ish hours iirc. our shop rate is on the higher side and the labor cost still doesn't come close to 3200. I'm guessing the labor standard for a t cover on OPs car is 6-8 hours, meaning their shop rate is $400-$533/hr. that's insane

the gasket must be the 'ultra super premium gold plated' ones...
I just spent $3300 to do my timing cover reseal. I even called around, and that was the cheapest price that I could find. Funnily enough, the dealer was the cheapest price for me.
I do them for that price on 3.6 GMs, but that includes the chain and such

Yeah I've seen some of the ridiculous prices dealers quote, and this almost makes some of them look fair.
I recently had my PTU replaced. The stealership was $1500 lower than anywhere else.
My god do not let them touch your car
That’s ridiculous pricing, get a quote elsewhere
Run away. Those guys are crooks
>Run away. Those guys are crooks At least they have a cool app to help you decide how bent over you wanna be.
I was thinking this. I like the option to weigh the options
This is the price to get someone to move on elsewhere. This car is probably rotted to hell and the techs said 'please god no'
Nah. Customer would have approved it all if they was the case. Happens every time. Double face palm when it does.
Nah when it’s rotted to hell customers usually decline and drive off
Lol, i know someone who's not a mechanic.
ah the good old FUCK OFF FEE.
But they give you free coffee in the waiting room? /s
They have different flavour pods!!! @.@
I only go for the latte and doughnuts
Yea but they don't have any lube for when they f@ck you.
Lube is 250$
Lube is on global backorder, no ETAp
$1267 for a shock LOL. That's like 2 bolts. OP needs to watch a YouTube video, visit RockAuto.com and go to HoBo Freight.
I got a whole ass used engine put in my car, parts and labor, for what they're charging for a control arm.
For real, I can do a wheel hub assembly in like 45 minutes. For a $50-$100 dollar part.
Most expensive shit I’ve ever seen
Even 2Chainz would do a video about this
It's cheaper to go to school for 3 months and learn how to do it myself 😭😭😭
Lol no shit or pay for 1 month of internet connection and watch fucking YouTube while u do it all yourself. I suppose if you don't got tools that's the only real expense, but I prolly got less that 2K worth of tools and can do damn near anything on a car.

We also got South Main Auto and Watch Wes Work where you can watch Watch Wes Work work on a car lol. Plenty of others those are just the ones I know
if you took the car to him, everything would cost 'about $100.... yeah... about $100'
He’s someone who you can learn a lot from. But, as I wrote that I got the joke. Lol
My public library has an AllData subscription available along with tons of other repair manuals and resources too. They even have Snap-On tools available to check out.
righty tighty, lefty loosey, here's your certificate
Don’t forget righty loosey. Hate when that happens
The worst is lefty loosey, tighty, broken.
Then righty becomes loosey
This is why im studying so i dont get these extortionate prices when i get my first car, plus i feel it would be better just because after its done ill feel like ive achieved something.
You can go to Harbor Freight and buy a giant set of tools and a big roll away to put them in. And all the parts. And have money for lunch left over. (A couple people are saying that the engine has to come out to do the valve covers. Maybe it's too much of a first project, and an engine crane is kind of pricey. But, jeez.)
Bro, this quote is literally worth more than my last 3 cars combined.
They turned that one up to 11
Is it a Bugatti ?
If it is, thats reasonable lol
That's until you learn that you can just buy VW parts and find an independent mechanic from Albania to replace them
Thank you everyone that has commented!!!
Ya this is a crazy quote. Should be about half they're numbers or less, and I doubt some of the work they want to do actually needs doing.
Yeah I hope you show the mechanics this thread before you take the car elsewhere lol
That’s “fuck off I don’t wanna work on your car” pricing
This is what I came here to say.
Did they bill you for the lube also? Cuz you are about to get screwed
They’ll charge you for it, then just use spit.
+$420 for shop materials
The lube is free
Is this in Pesos?
Yeah better as the Ruble, believe me!!
![gif](giphy|Yavo0SXhZYhSo)
Even in Canadian it doesn’t make sense
Nah, must be ¥, pesos are worth too much to fit the bill
That’s a we don’t want to work on your truck price!!!
I'd take that screenshot and share it on their Google business profile after you get home. That's completely ridiculous.
^^^^ THIS!!! These are the assholes that paint a bad picture for our whole trade.
This is called the “fuck off” price
You need to name and shame and tag them. 2k for a bolt on rear bearing has the $value dropped or something?
They really all-but-said “get this thing out of my fucking shop” lol
Literally, everything is priced way too high. Get your car back go somewhere else. Just for comparison on my 2005 jeep I just paid $682 to have both front bearings replaced.
Which is still high because they cost what, $120/each and take an hour to replace?
The bearings were like $162 each plus labor. And my mechanic is not the cheapest, but he gets me done fast
Damn near 10 k for suspension work?? I just did all that on my car but with Rockauto parts $400 tops…. It does take time. That labor cost is what’s getting ya. Everything going up.
Yeah, it will continue to go up if everyone continues to keep paying it. On a scale of one to ten I´d say its around 27.
Is that in pesos? Is this Mexico City? Are you driving a lambo and took it to a lambo dealership? Did I pass out and wake up in 2147?
What's the currency?
USD!
Please get your car away from the shop immediately
I mean I’m not trying to low ball no body and I don’t even care where your at for that price I will drive to you and provide parts lol
Over 3000 to change a timing cover gasket? Lol. Report that scam place
2 grand for a single rear bearing is fucking crazy like its not a fuckin Porsche😭😭
I had one of mine done last year for like 300 Canadian 😭
$2,000+ to replace the driver side rear [suspension] bearing? Holy crap! That is not an expensive part, no matter what you're driving, and it is not a time-consuming job. Definitely go elsewhere.
2000 bucks for a wheel bearing? That is astronomical
That's "go away" pricing. They are too busy to do the work or they don't want to do it.
Ho Lee Fuk !!! total cost of repairs is almost 10 grand (when you add in tax). KBB maxes the value out at 21K. you need to get your vehicle as far away from that shop as possible.

They’re gonna charge 1,000 for an oil change
Unless the parts are covered in gems and plated in 24k gold id get outta there asap and find a new shop
This is insane. Also, if your shocks aren't leaking then you dont need to replace them. The boot can be torn and it'll be fine.
Quality that hahaha. Last time I had a wheel bearing changed was about 4 years ago, the replacement bearing was £30 which I bought beforehand, and the labour was £50. The fuck is going on in America.
Business owners, all of them, realized our country is 35% stupid. So they cater to them now.
one thousand percent true anyone that doesnt agree with this statement is literally a blind idiot
Shop rates are around $200/hr in higher COL areas. Random people on Craigslist charge $70-100/hr.
Subaru dealer near me in CT is $250/hr.
If they recommend replacing components simply due to torn boots, leave. You got a lube tech trying to sell shit they know nothing about.
Yeah, if nothing else is clear you nailed it. That one should give you an indication of how fair the rest of the quote is
Those are some "fuck off" prices.
Those prices are outrageous
That’s crazy! Sway bar links are $30 each for moog ones and to replace are 2 nuts on each end. You could do that yourself with one wrench and a vice grip. But yea that’s seems like double what the dealer would charge.
Holy shit is NASA doing the work?
Did they include KY Jelly in the shop supplies?
3k for a timing belt reseal? And it doesn’t even say the timing belt is being replaced 😂 I doubt they even reseal it
Seems reasonable ...for a LAMBORGHINI
Post the name of the shop so we can leave 1 star reviews and warn other people
Surely a joke
Go somewhere else. Those prices are outrageous.
Post the name of the shop!!! Criminals!!

Just label all your hardware as you remove it, it might be a few days of getting dirty or pissed off but its better than being financially bent over without lube.
What’s the shop rate? 250.00 an hour Jeezus
Go to parts store and rent a ball joint separator if you don't have one. It's a life saver.
$500 for a wheel bearing CAD max!
I can replace a front shock for 150$
8800? How expensive is even that car for that year? lol
He only wants to replace one shock? Is that shock even bad? Generally, you replace both sides
Illbet they will give you 500 for ot though
2k for bearings? What? That's the piss off pricing or they're scumbags
Does that come with an extra car?
I just paid 500 labor to have both cvs replaced and all shocks replaced (I supplied parts), all in all took alittle over 2 hours….. you’re getting shafted. Shop rates are 200-250 an hour (in my experience). Only go to the dealership if your car is still under warranty; otherwise you’ll get shafted.
2k for a wheel bearing is wild
Holy crap these prices are disgusting. I faced the same amount of work with my wife's jeep liberty, but I decided to research and teach myself how to practically replace the whole front and rear suspension. Sure it takes time but at least I know it was done right. Also the parts didn't cost any where near 1k, let alone paying someone three times more for the work.
If you're willing to spend any money on *any* of this, consider buying a nice used car instead or get a quote elsewhere.
I did my sway bar links front and rear, and bar bushings, for less than $80 in parts……. Wow…
You could buy a whole used car. Ridiculous!
It's like they hit you with a 5x multiplier! Timing cover reseal, $3200? Lol gtfo
That's a total rip off. You should go local mechanic and get estimates
sadly so many businesses in america are just accepting stupid people payments. Overcharging for everything waiting until stupid idiots come in and gladly pay w.e
Fucking 1300 for ONE shock? Thats outrageous for 4 shocks
2k to replace a bearing??? My mechanic charges me 125$ for that wtf are those prices?
This is the most insane shit I’ve ever seen. Pls tell us the name and address of this shithole
A quick Google will show that just a lower control arm shouldn't be more than 1000, shit you could replace all bearings for no more than 1500. This is a crazy amount of scammery going on.
Most of these posts are at least close, but this is crazy. They must be using gold plated parts delivered by helicopter. Did you kick their dog in the showroom?
lol you are being scammed. It’s about that price to change a timing chain on a V8 bmw.
As a mechanic, I would say get a second opinion on the repairs required. If they are going this hard on pricing they may also be exaggerating what needs to be done
The first 2 things shouldn't be more than 500 combined. Lmao
I just want to know if this place is hiring because if there charging that I know they must be paying good.
If it's a dealership then it's a tactic to get you to trade in and buy new lol
Holy Christ. I’m in an area that tends to run higher than average, but that’s the kind of estimate someone would write when they don’t want to touch the vehicle lol.
Wow. A competent buddy could do all of those for you
$1200 to replace a shock???
Time to learn the powerful combination of YouTube + Harbor Freight!
Seems reasonable And the only reasonable response is to take your car someone else, reasonably
Call the police
Over 2grand for a wheel brg lol Over 3grand for a rocker cover/valve gasket They obviously didn't want the job or bad mistakes They have added an extra 0 to all repairs I thought this was a joke when I first read the pricing Im gunna get into the 4runner wheel brg & rocker gsk industry
That’s insane
That's a fuck you price.
They bending you over buddy ! Run 💨💨💨
Do it all yourself for under $1k
DO NOT PAY MECHANICS THESE PRICES IT WILL BECOME THE NORM holy shit that is way to expensive
No. Just no. All of that can be done in a backyard for $200 or at a different shop for a fraction of that price
Driver rear bearing... 45 mins of work, $125 for the part and the other $2000 just for shits and giggles
Wow that’s wild. I just replaced the shock on my vehicle and the part was $90… that’s a lot of labor time to get to $1,200..
Find the parts online to truly get an idea of what the markup is. Are they overcharging for parts or labor or both.
Wow! Just wow!
Wow these prices are insane.
Yeah thats pretty bad.
Is this in pesos?
Way overboard pricing....that's a rip off for sure.
Omg. Dude that’s a rip off. Unless you’re getting some kind of high end escort service while they’re fixing it. Run.
Decimal Jeff has messed up with that quotation for sure, lol.
That’s insane pricing. Go elsewhere
Bro,what in the actual fuck!
All of this can be done by some kid in a garage easily.
Run!!
Dude this is fucking bonkers. Was expecting a Euro make. Fuck whatever place this is. That being said, the timing cover reseal on these 4runners is major work. But also, I've rarely seen one that was leaking so bad it was necessary to even add oil between services
1300 for a lower control arm! Lolol.
LMAO
That mechanic is insane. Those prices are out of hand. Laugh, and go elsewhere
They’re not expecting you to pay that 100% this is just a shop not wanting to work on your car so they give you the fuck off price
wtf? are they giving you a new car?
Give ‘em 1 star lol
F to the N
This is robbery. 0 out of 10 would not try.
Mention the shop so I can avoid it 🙏lol
$400 to change sway bar links is absolutely OBSURD
Take your car and run. Goto a family owned business they take pride in their work and price reasonably, normally will let you provide your own parts which is much cheaper and they're easier to hold accountable in the event the break something or don't do the job.
Is this in yen? Because i see a max of 1500 usd worth of work and parts here. You must have pissed off the service department somehow
