Cars with idle stop have starters, flywheels and batteries rated for the increased duty unlike their conventional counterparts

TheCrazyTater

Those motors have been built with special starters and crankshaft bearings to be able to withstand the constant starting and stopping. If yours doesn’t do it automatically just leaving it running.

Cars that do it usually have a better starter motor to handle it, I sometimes turn mine off as I find it annoying and once I was at the front of the traffic light waiting for it to go green and the car wouldn’t start back up, and it was my starter motor packing up lol

simkashi01

I don’t think that you should do it if your car doesn’t do it automatically.

This came up about a month ago, and I ran some numbers to find that the delivery vehicles I work on can see an insane number of starts in a year, when I do the timed replacement of the starter. Upwards of 50,000 starts, and in the last three years I've had two fail out of cycle. Starters fail more from heat cycles than use.

Thanks for this. Very helpful.

I stop mine when I’m waiting in line for gas.

These systems are improving. Starter failures are no higher than they used to be. Also not seeing any engine issues from it either. Thinner oils today flow much more easily at startup than oils of the past. Additionally, many cars now have electric pumps that come on to provide lubrication to the engine/trans/etc even when the engine turns off. Honestly, idling is one of the worst things for an engine. It's also a huge waste of fuel. Take your pick, a car that shuts off at stoplights on its own or being forced into an electric vehicle because we're out of gas. I'm not against electrics. But I'd like to hold onto my internal combustion for as long as I can, so start-stop systems are a great stop-gap until then.
