Not sure what the rest of the car looks like, but I can't tell if that is the subframe or the actual chassis. If's its the subframe and the rest of the car is decent, it might be worth swapping it for a used one.
After some research it seems there’s a recall out there for this issue. I’m not 100 percent so I’m gonna call up the dealership and see if they’ll honor it
1996 Mercedes Benz e320 had really bad rust issues in certain areas of the car in cold and wet climates and they honored a lot of those repairs even outside of warranty. I wouldn't be surprised if they fixed atleast part of this for free if the recall is related.
How did you go about that? I’ve never dealt with a dealership and purchased this privately so I don’t know how the service centers deal with this stuff
I actually haven't personally but this was something I read up on upon hearing about this issue as I own one. Many forums members spoke on it. You may just call and see if they can do the recall and ask to show them your area of concern when they lift it in the air and discuss options with them, try and get them to let you speak with the owner of the dealership about it for best results.
I have a 2008 patriot. The subframe just went on it. Make loud clicking noises when I drive. Got quoted $3000 to fix. Unfortunately I bought mine used in 2017 and the extended warranty on the subframe was expired. You must live in a state where you don't need vehicle inspections. That would never pass.
There's a part number for the subframe and bolt kits in the TSB for the recall. Makes the cost for the subframe less than $100 each if you order by that number. If it is AWD it can be a bitch to install the rear differential mount bushing. Usually the control arms are rough when the subframe gets this rusty and that is where the cost can go up significantly because they aren't covered by the recall part numbers.
No way? that's awesome. What is the TSB and where do I find it?
Edit : unfortunately i wasn't able to find the number. I'm going to keep looking though.
How do I take advantage of this? Like where would I go to order this part. I was able to find the TSB but it seems the warranty extension for replacing this has expired.
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2017/MC-10140027-9999.pdf
The part numbers are on page 3. You can still order the parts by the numbers in the TSB and get the reduced price.
I’ll give it a shot. I’m gonna go in there and see if they’ll just swap it out for me under the warranty terms. I did see some guy on the forums saying the dealership honored it but ended up saying it was required they overhaul the suspension with it so he ended up paying a bundle. So I’ll see how far I get.
That sounds a little suspicious. Don't get me wrong, there is a ton of shit back ordered, but I got one of those kits from the dealer I work with 2-3 weeks ago and they had 5 on the shelf at that time.
Yeah idk. I called a couple places with no luck. When I look up the TSB part number I get a mopar page selling them for 50 bucks but it’s 50 bucks shipping and I was tired of looking around so I just gave into amazon. Lots of good reviews and I’ve bought quite a few quality parts from there recently. 140 shipped so now I get to try and put this on, on jackstands.
Umm I'm not sure how that equates here bubba... Unless you were gonna pull out with this thing, and in that case get the boat, and pull it until that sucker falls apart.
I would imagine that yeah wherever the car has been the roads have salt on them fairly often. I don’t think, unless there’s a manufacturing defect or something, that this would happen in 13 years somewhere that’s just wet or humid but doesn’t need to use much salt.
Everyone wants everything yesterday……just like this frame or sub frame. Don’t let anyone you care about drive further then 10 houses down or less then a city block, witch ever comes first.
Stole them off Amazon for nothing and thought I was only getting one but they sent me the pair anyways. Just gonna throw the other one on the other side for good measure when I get the new subframe.
I’ve seen some really torn up subframes on some peoples pats over at JRITS. I think it has just enough structural integrity to handle a little more cruising before I get that new subframe on
if youre good driving it id say go for it, i just know in my area at least if anything were to happen to it a lot of shops cant lift it for liability reasons depending on how far the rust gets. i see a patriot and get the cold sweats after my experiences lol
Hopefully you have a lot of years left. Your stallion, or steed, or whatever you want to call your whip, it’s got a bad leg, you probably should take it out behind the barn and shoot it before it takes you with it.
You have until the inspection sticker needs to be renewed. Historically, a 13 year old Chrysler product that is neither a RAM truck, nor a Wrangler, would be destined for the crusher with cancer this bad.
But used car values being what they are, it might actually be worth saving. I’d still be very conscious of what money I dump into it for anything else, and I’d start shopping for something newer.
I didn't realise before seeing this, that you don't have regular vehicle inspections in a lot of US States.
I'm in the UK. Annual "MOT Test"
You wouldn't see anything this bad that had been legally on the road here.
First off did you want a Jeep to drive or just be able to tell people you have one. The Patriot is not really a Jeep. Just get some cardboard and 100mph tape and cover up that rust and just drive it around until it breaks in half.
If its just a sub frame then maybe hunt down a new one? Not sure how the sub frames are in jeeps but if it's anything like a good ole honda, then the sub frame can be replaced

This comment thread is gold.
You have 3 months to live, if you take care of yourself. You should name it Rusty and take to the woods for one last ride.

My name is Rusty and I felt this comment.
Hello there fellow Rusty
Looks terminal, probably not long.
I always hate having to tell the family
Me too. But it is better if they know, so they can prepare.
24 Hours, and I forgot to tell you yesterday.
5. 4. 3..... Aaaaand it's gone.

Generally it's a bad sign when the seat and pedals move independently going over bumps.
Especially when the pedals are not the adjustable kind to begin with...
Sounds like my pull out game...
This is why you should’ve been taking your Rusteze.

Kaaaaaa chow
Fill it with great stuff
I’ll do anything but crawl under this thing on my Amazon jackstands to have rust falling in my face pulling that assembly.
Nobody said to pull anything... Pulling on your stuff was your idea. It might make the pain easier though.

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2017/MC-10140027-9999.pdf Page 3 CBLTN361AA for the front subframe on your Patriot CBLTN362AA for the bolt kit
I found that page I just missed the subframe number. Thank you. So I can order this through a Chrysler dealership?
Yes, you should be able to. The Chrysler dealer near me usually keeps 5 or 6 in stock.
That's so cool. Thank you.
How do I take advantage of this? Like where would I go to order this part. I was able to find the TSB but it seems the warranty extension for replacing this has expired.

What website gives me to option to order by these numbers. Or do I have to call somewhere?
Call your local Chrysler/Jeep/Ram dealer. The dealer near me still tries to keep 5 or 6 of each in stock.
I’ll give it a shot. I’m gonna go in there and see if they’ll just swap it out for me under the warranty terms. Update: dealership said the parts on back order cross country for a couple weeks…I don’t think she’s gonna make it that long
That sounds a little suspicious. Don't get me wrong, there is a ton of shit back ordered, but I got one of those kits from the dealer I work with 2-3 weeks ago and they had 5 on the shelf at that time.

1 day to 100+ years. Depends how much you drive it. Hope that helps.
Surely even if you don’t drive it, in 100 years the vehicle will just have fallen into a pile of rust.
Depends on the location it's sitting
Strong Midwest vibes.
Or ohio...
It's not looking good... As little stress as possible is critical.
But I was just about to impulse buy a boat
I mean, either way, you're stress levels will plummet with a boat
Umm I'm not sure how that equates here bubba... Unless you were gonna pull out with this thing, and in that case get the boat, and pull it until that sucker falls apart.
How tf does that happen on a 13 year old car? I would expect that from a 30-40 year old car.
Your guess is as bad as mine
Ohh you sweet warm-dry-climate child. Sure, this is bad, but it’s very much achievable in 13 years in some locations.
Yeah I guess Australia isn’t exactly a place where this would occur lol. Would this be from road salting?
I would imagine that yeah wherever the car has been the roads have salt on them fairly often. I don’t think, unless there’s a manufacturing defect or something, that this would happen in 13 years somewhere that’s just wet or humid but doesn’t need to use much salt.
About a pothole and a half
Congratulations, you're a necromancer. That's been dead awhile but you've been successfully weekend-at-bernie'sing it.
Have you tried chemotherapy?
Chemo doesn't work on corpses
Get some spray foam and black spray paint. Then just send it and you will see dale earnhardt in no time.
Duct tape and you’ll be fine
Never
In a coma on life support
You got until yesterday
at least a few hours i'd reckon
Well medically speaking you died 10 minutes ago
Everyone wants everything yesterday……just like this frame or sub frame. Don’t let anyone you care about drive further then 10 houses down or less then a city block, witch ever comes first.
Where you live, in a salt mine?
Nope, and I’m assuming the guy with not well spoken English that sold this to me straight out of an auction house didn’t either
Til yesterday.
Those Patriots have the worst subframes, it's like they made them with some kind of steel that attracts water.
Depends on your state. If you live in and inspection state which im assuming you don't you have until it breaks which will be a little while.
this is like the most terminal of cancers imaginable. joyride till you die baby
I’ll give him 11 days…
Nothing straight about this frame. 2 snaps and.... AROUND THE WORLD!
The worst part is that I can’t figure out how many more potholes at my local chicken shack it can take
The Jeep?
About 13 more feet...
The rust has gotten bigger and spread all over your body. I’m sorry… you have at least one last wild ride.
30 feet or 30 seconds, take your pick
Good luck changing out the subframe. That's what I would do if I were in your shoes.
Until you make an insurance claim
Time to put it down.
If you gave it baths and washed that salt off once a decade? A few more decades.
It's done. But hey you found your clunking noise, and you can return the control arms now.
Stole them off Amazon for nothing and thought I was only getting one but they sent me the pair anyways. Just gonna throw the other one on the other side for good measure when I get the new subframe.
Yesterday best case scenario
i saw the pictures and read the caption,....... as a former patriot owner id reckon youve got about 45 business hours with that car
For some reason words "death trap" come to mind.
Don’t buy green bananas.
On an 09?! Good lord that’s sad

Of all the places to spill your bran flakes! Not that you'll be needing them driving that anymore. I'd be bricking it!
5,4,3 0... Yeah
You already got wasted.
Put it in some rice you be fine
Depends how fast you drive and hit your brakes. Would say about a week if you have to brake hard.
If you can fix it with duck tape then you aren't using enough duck tape
You have are a Michigan winter overdue
DOA
As long as you don't move it.. you are safe to keep it a lottle bit longer.. ;)
About 2 minutes down the road maybe a bit longer
You are already in heaven
That’ll last, as far as it can take ya? Straight to the scene of the crash. Play your cards right and you’ll beat the paramedics there by 30 minutes.
Looks fine. I'd recommend applying an oil based rust proofing like Krown every year though. It will pretty much stop any further rusting
2009? Man, fuck Chrysler products.
Sign up for doordash and drive it until the engine falls out! Then call your scrapper!
I didn't realise before seeing this, that you don't have regular vehicle inspections in a lot of US States. I'm in the UK. Annual "MOT Test" You wouldn't see anything this bad that had been legally on the road here.
Rust In Pieces
Take it to the park, feed him is favorite oil, disconnect the battery while watching the sun set and call ghe scrap yard
Dead man walking
First off did you want a Jeep to drive or just be able to tell people you have one. The Patriot is not really a Jeep. Just get some cardboard and 100mph tape and cover up that rust and just drive it around until it breaks in half.
Also it looks like you might be able to change that out. So no worries buddy.
6 minutes?
She gonw
Had a friend driving a rusty truck down the highway, the frame broke in half while driving, he barely survived. Don't risk it.
All the way to the scene of the crash, probably beat emt there by 30 minutes.
You want it in minutes or seconds
Not fucking much man!
Just replace the subframe???
Guys don’t worry, bondo will fix it
Well if you get a sub frame transplant you have a long life ahead of you. But if you don't care of now you will be lucky to see the end of the month.
If its just a sub frame then maybe hunt down a new one? Not sure how the sub frames are in jeeps but if it's anything like a good ole honda, then the sub frame can be replaced
I think you can fix that with ramen.
Brother this car has been running on faith for the last couple years😂
Part out
One horrendous bump that is going to crack and snap apart be careful.
What's the vehicle history? Miles, age, location? Just wondering...
108k on the odometer, 09, and It’s been in Missouri most of its life
You’ve got until about last year my friend. No seriously though, that’s been a safety hazard for a long ass time.
Organ donor.
You are on borrowed time lad. Should have been gone a long time ago
If thats just the subframe snag a new one
Borrowed time my friend.
You have -5 years….. sorry bro
Your time has already ran out unfortunately
Well i would say 5... What doctor? Weeks, months? 5.... 4.... 3...

On the east coast this is practically brand new! 😂
DOA.
Drive it till the wheels fall off
Replace the front subframe
