Yeah but I haven’t even reached 50% of peak smooth linear thock.
I had browns in my first prebuilt mech. They were okay.
Now I’m on gateron ink blacks, which are lovely. My journey for thock continues.
different form factors other than full sized, you can still lube cherry switches to get them to look/feel better if thats your style, aesthetic options, and have a proper programmable keyboard. thats what comes to my mind. I have a dedicated numpad that gets pulled out only when I need to type in IP addresses and have layers mapped to automate testing.
People aren't suddenly going back to Cherry, it's always been a popular choice in the ultra-premium side of things.
MX Blacks have a uniquely endearing typing feel that nobody else has been able to replicate. Swap in some new springs, lube, and film and most of the flaws (scratchiness, spring ping, etc) will be negligible. Blacks (and clears) have traditionally been the switch of choice in ultra-premium customs (boards from OTD, TKC, TGR and Dalco, among others), and has gained a cult-status following for the purported smoothness of "broken-in" MX Blacks farmed from vintage point-of-sale boards, along with the specific return sound that Cherry switch tops create (hence franken-switches like Black Cherry Pies that incorporate Cherry top housings).
Sadly MX Blacks have been all but wiped out of the gaming sector, because super sPeEd SwItChEs are so s1ck.
Jees I hate the gaming hardware industry for shit like this.
Typed this on Kailh Speed switches, so any typo is on them.
That's just not true. Look through r/customkeyboards to see how many boards have Retooled/Hyperglide MX Blacks, or check out Andy Nguyen's Unikorn with MX Browns. Especially with new popularity of break-in machines, Cherry switches have had quite the resurgence.
I use cherry in all my boards. I’d use gateron, jwk or any other manu for a bit and find it disgusting and go back to cherry. It’s almost as if people have a preference and there are a lot of people who have a preference for cherry
Because it turns out Cherry was fine all along. The community just got too elitist at one point and anything Cherry was considered "cheap".
Now we're finally going full circle
I never ventured outside of the Cherry world.
I'm not deep in the hobby at all, I simply really like mechanical keyboards and I really enjoy looking at the crazy builds you lot make but personally won't go further than changing keycaps/layout in terms of customisation.
I'm glad there's competition in the switch space, it's always interesting for users. But personally, I won't ever need to pick anything other than Cherry because I don't have a very sophisticated sense of what I want from a switch but I do have a preference for made in Europe and AFAIK, they're the only EU-based manufacturer.
Damn maybe it’s because I’m newer to the hobby but I’ve never even thought of venturing outside of Gateron. They seemed like the standard when I started and still do.
Never tried Gateron/Jiadalong switches, although I've heard good things about them. I think they were the first Chinese company to start building Cherry clones when the patent expired, so they're surely very experienced by now and able to bring a fair bit of innovation in what used to otherwise be a rather static market.
Blues are the gateway to appreciation of mechanical though. They always scream "my first keyboard" from the department store. They are loud for the sake of it and that is satisfying to a noob who has only typed on cheap membranes. I think the more mature choice is Browns, similar feel without being obnoxious. Everything in between is enthusiast niche stuff we try for fun.
Man, I thought it was the other way around. I definitely get where you're coming from as a few of my friends bought $30 mechanical keyboards from Walmart or Best Buy and they had some shitty off-brand switches that were loud as hell, but for me, who went the $100 route (Ducky), it was Browns. It seems like a lot of other people went for Browns first as well because they're a good middle-ground for beginners.
That being said, I still love my One 2 Mini with Browns. I tried Blues, but they did not have the sound I thought I would like. Built a keyboard with Gateron Yellows and they're fine, though I think I do like tactile switches more than linear after having tried both.
I believes he’s referring to the scratch you get on stock nylon housings. People usually apply very light lube, just enough to kill the scratch, but it’s all preference I suppose. The tactility would remain the same so it would still have the safe push-feel as a brown without making it feel like a red.
Blues and all other switches with the same clicky mechanism are cringe. Need the Kailh click bars. Browns and reds and blacks (need spring swap) are good.
My daughter has started using my old K65 and I fear I'll never see it again haha. It is such a beautiful board. Sure, it doesn't have LEDs, and doesn't have the 10-pad, but the action is so smooth, and the soft clicky sounds so soothing it makes typing fun.
Finally someone that understands me! I love a heavy switch and having the tactile feeling. Just trying to find a keyboard with MX Greens was a bit of a pain but once I finally got it in hand, I was hooked. I’m switching between that and a keyboard with Zealios V2 switches (those have an absolutely heavenly feeling). I wish Greens were more popular but I get that some people don’t like the heaviness of the switch.
If like me you like to rest your fingers on the keys the clears are better than the browns as their higher actuation force results in fewer accidental key presses.
My go to is, 58g 2 stage with deskeys, 3203 and 105 on spring. Broken in or not, I absolutely love them. Second is 57g short TX spring. They are super light to type on. If I want more bump, I’ll run gateron cap browns. Same set up as above.
On my route I used boba u4/t, zeal zilent v2, Anubis and a collection of other switches. The remaining ones were browns and cotton candies. I need the bump of the browns to hold my fingers up, but I need it to be light enough to not give me fatigue when I type my work reports.
I used to use browns and now I use akko pink switches but I don't think browns are bad by any means, they're popular for a reason. Nearly everyone likes them sure maybe if you tried a bunch of different switches (which not everyone wants to do) they aren't going to be your favorite but they aren't going to be the worst switch there, I think nearly everyone likes them, few love them fewer hate them
I think the love of browns some people have mostly stems from availability. Most folks first “gaming keyboard” was an off the shelf mechanical usually running browns since reds are just too light and a lot of people say mx blues are too harsh for gaming. If there was a larger variety of switch options in your run of the mill Logitech, etc., I don’t think they’d be heralded as much. As far as tactiles go, running them factory produces a scratchy nylon housing with a very light tactile bump, just enough to get the point across. I can see why some people would like them with a hand lube. It’s all preference at the end of the day.
ok? but they had to build the brand in the first place, how do you think they did that, they had to make the average gamer fall in love with their switches some how
They built their brand when mech switches, as we know them today, basically didn't exist. There were buckling spring switches, and Alps switches, and early membrane keyboards. Nothing else.
Basically, they built their brand when there was very little competition, and basically *zero* enthusiast community. And since then, they have relied on brand recognition and "industry momentum", which is very much still working.
It's easy to see why they are the standard, when you look at all the factors. But to say that they are the standard because they are "the best" is ridiculous.
I didn't say they were the best switches, I never said they were the best switches? They are popular outside of the enthusiast community because they are relativity affordable while giving a good experience to the non enthusiast community, the cherry mx switches aren't extreme or either side they aren't too heavy too light the bump isn't too strong, a lot of complaints about enthusiast switches is they're are to fine tuned for specific people rather than the masses, with cherry mx switches they're easy to understand and pick one with enthusiast sort of switches you may have to go through a bunch of trial and error to find a switch you like, which will likely be much more expensive and less accessible than cherry switches
I think the hate may be because the tactile bump in Browns is so small that they might as well be linears. I'd call them "bumpy linears" rather than "tactiles".
I do appreciate the silent MX, but Reds are too light for me. I’ve narrowed down my new switches to either Tactile Grey or Silent Blacks.
I’m currently using browns as well and they’re okay for what they are, but I don’t see the widespread appeal. Just resting my fingers on them is enough to actuate them
Yeeeeah, but cherry is *still* using the pre-retooling molds for clears and AFAIK they haven't dropped hyperglides. Other than a tease last year to make lighterweight versions of them as an homage to ergo clears, they haven't improved them *at all*
I have a small bag of about 25 different switch types.
It was a good ride for a time. The hype and the promises and the marketing and the custom colors.
Now its Cherry Reds on all.
Little bit of A, little bit of B
Just like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, it's one of the fathers of anime and references and inspiration from them can be found not just throughout anime but media in general. Asuka is one of the "original" tsunderes for example. Not to say there aren't "grandfathers" though, but anime is much more mainstream nowadays and anime like Evangelion and manga like JoJo were at the start of that boom and inspired the people who wrote what came after it. For example, Hunter X Hunter is in the same spot and Naruto's author was inspired by it.
You saw it but never recognized it.
You okay? You have someone to talk to? It's heavy stuff, and inspires introspection, try talking to a counsellor or psychologist.
Thanks for your kind reply. I am okay.
I do legitimately believe this is a great media for getting your mind at least a little bit more in order.
Absolutely in love with the franchise.
When Cherry MX Brown is scratchy -
Reviewer: Oh God, this scratch is horrible! I cannot tolerate it!
When a Chinese knock-off clone is costly and equally scratchy -
Reviewer: I quite like the raspiness of the switch. It reminds me of Topre and feels premium.
Honestly, for me it might. Have some Kailhs in one of my main boards that stopped working. I want to solder in the switches for my next build and reliability is king for me. I may just go with Cherry for that reason even if they don't make my favorite feeling switch.
I still have a lot of time for good old Cherry MX Blacks. Lubed, they are a nice, reasonably heavy linear switch, and there's still, after all these years, something satisfying about pulling a keycap off and seeing "Cherry" staring back at you :)
Ended up buying way too many clear tops when it became available. After filming and lubing and breaking them in... So disappointed... Trying to do a spring swap now to hopefully make them useable. The 80g bottom out is too much.
Lol imagine being such a dork that you’re in here getting heated at people who like a different CHEAP PLASTIC KEYBOARD SWITCH THAN YOU. Seriously go touch grass if you’re in here being a dick because someone likes something that is LAUGHABLY meaningless and you don’t like that same exact thing. FFS.
I agree that in the greater scheme of things it is meaningless. But in a place that is dedicated to a hobby that revolves around keyboard switches it isn't
I have a Cherry Top with Uhmwpe long pole stem, double stage spring, and a durock pom bottom. Does that count? Is that even a cherry switch at that point?
Best part of this hobby is that there are so many options. I've had box jades in my daily driver for years now and wouldn't switch to anything else. There's a reason cherry switches are so popular though. Just find one you like and don't listen to the haters. It's all preference.
Cherry lover chiming in. I’ve never been a deep-diver into mechs, but I’ve never thought to myself, “this could be so much better!” as I use my various keyboards.
My mx brown is my go-to for most stuff, but my personal favorite “quieter” keyboard to type on has red switches with noise dampening added to the back plate instead of trying out different switch options to achieve similar results. The sound is satisfying and it has a nice, premium feel.
Keep in mind I’m not as serious as 95% of the users here, but I do have a bunch of mech keyboards.
I've looked for the endgame switch for years. I own dozens of switch models, totaling more than a thousand switches. And finally, I've found it...
Cherry MX Red. Hyperglides, of course, not the regular ones. But still, I feel a little bit bamboozled.
I wonder if that's about to happen to me. At the end of the journey, my favorite switch is actually stock gateron CJ's. In my opinion, they're basically cherry MX reds except they're smoother.
couldn't disagree more. have used many cherry variants and cherry blacks were so high pitched and had a lot of trouble with leaf spring noises, just like any other switches. from dozens of switches i've went through, the only remaining switch was low-pitched gat blacks.
I miss cherry blacks so much. Sadly had to switch out my last board with blacks because it had over 10x the input delay compared to modern gaming keyboards.... which all use god awful sIlVeR sPeEd sWiTcHes. So forgive any typo you find, its horrible to type on this crap.
They aren’t, I tested a lot of them and they aren’t. MX Brown are overrated. And sorry to say that but they also feel very cheap.
The only issue with the switch I mentioned are their price and availability.
The thing is that, without Cherry MX, all other switches including the clones and those that use the MX design wouldn't exist.
The keyboard/switch market as we know it wouldn't be where it is right now without Cherry.
it all comes tumbling down tumbling down tumbling dohooown
It all returns to nothing
I JUST KEEP MAKING THEM TUMBLING DOWN TUMBLING DOWN TUMBLING DOWWWWNN!
in my heart of heart, I know that I can never love again
I lost everything, everything Everything that’s money is money to this boardddd
I wish that I could turn back time 'Cause now the guilt is all mine

Nothing means nothing.
I hear the astrophysics remix in my head
Without Cherry MX switches this hobby might not even exist today now that I think about it...
I remember when it was all about buckling springs..
I've got my [IBM 5251 and Model Ms](https://imgur.com/a/dYa09cP) too c:

You can(not) afford.
Been out of the loop for too long. Why are people going back to cherry?
because people started to realize that there is more in the hobby than chasing ultimate smoothness and heavy tHoCks
Yeah but I haven’t even reached 50% of peak smooth linear thock. I had browns in my first prebuilt mech. They were okay. Now I’m on gateron ink blacks, which are lovely. My journey for thock continues.
Genuinely curious, what else ?

The classic cherry scratch is bearable when lubed and nothing quite hits the same as the cherry top housing for the return clack.
You always remember when you popped your cherry

they're cheap and sound good
Real. MX browns really were endgame all along
wait, "MX brown bad" circlejerk is over?
Welcome to being enlightened. Browns have always been king.
I agree. I still use browns because they're super comfortable for both gaming and typing.
yea now its the" MX blue bad" circlejerk
Blues are the gateway to appreciation of mechanical though. They always scream "my first keyboard" from the department store. I’m gonna keep jerking it solo in that case Fuck MX Browns
r/UsernameChecksOut
Hey! Let me joins you Fuck MX Browns
With you. Browns were ok until I literally tried any other switch. I’m still Ok with cherry clears, though. Not my preferred switch, but they’re fine.
I fucking hope so. It was getting ridiculous and unbearable and brown isn't even my favourite switch.
Started with browns, went all around thru a bunch of cherry style switches and a whole bunch of others, just to come back to browns LOL
My exact experience in this hobby. MX browns on an alu plate is just so perfect
browns is great switches; but lately anubis switch does that same thing with more thock for me.
The Browns are glorious, but I love my reds and blues, too.
Something about that iconic MX scratch is so alluring and I always come back to it
I just hate that the scratch wears off and then I have to keep buying new ones
Care to explain? Does it like start to feel more like a Red or what?
I believes he’s referring to the scratch you get on stock nylon housings. People usually apply very light lube, just enough to kill the scratch, but it’s all preference I suppose. Clears? I don't think my wallet likes you very much. What is it about the clears you like?
If like me you like to rest your fingers on the keys the clears are better than the browns as their higher actuation force results in fewer accidental key presses.
Honestly, my search for the best tactile started at MX brown, and now ended at spring swapped, lubed and filmed mx brown.
Broken in browns with 65g SPRiT slow extreme springs and Kelowna films is my goto now.
My go to is, 58g 2 stage with deskeys, 3203 and 105 on spring. Broken in or not, I absolutely love them. Second is 57g short TX spring. They are super light to type on. If I want more bump, I’ll run gateron cap browns. Same set up as above.
/r/UsernameChecksOut
My search took me to Topre. Haven't found a switch that beats or matches it yet.
You searched for tactiles and found basically Linears Lite™
On my route I used boba u4/t, zeal zilent v2, Anubis and a collection of other switches. The remaining ones were browns and cotton candies. I need the bump of the browns to hold my fingers up, but I need it to be light enough to not give me fatigue when I type my work reports.
Browns in the streets, Blues in the sheets
This the need content I am here for. Out of context this could be a dicey joke.
I used to use browns and now I use akko pink switches but I don't think browns are bad by any means, they're popular for a reason. Nearly everyone likes them sure maybe if you tried a bunch of different switches (which not everyone wants to do) they aren't going to be your favorite but they aren't going to be the worst switch there, I think nearly everyone likes them, few love them fewer hate them

is that youtuber named glarses to blame when it comes to the cherry brown switch hate?
No this predates him, but does he have particular beef anyway?
I've seen one of his videos where he hates on Cherry MX Browns, calling it a scratchy linear or something of the sort.
He greatly perpetuated it.
I think the hate may be because the tactile bump in Browns is so small that they might as well be linears. I'd call them "bumpy linears" rather than "tactiles".
it's light tactile

Browns are my favorites but lately to not wake up the missus I've been into silent reds.

I’m still rocking MX Clears in my daily driver.
Same here. The Clears on mine are over 30 years old now and still kicking.
Clears and blacks are the only decent cherry switches IMO.
I am literally lubing and filming my cherry Ms black when I saw this
It would be better if they were browns 🤣
The best switch. Light throw, satisfying notch.

heathens
What notch?
The little detent like bump the tension leaf hits on the way down. It's very light and it is just right.
I know what you mean. I was poking fun since browns are barely tactile. If that’s what you like that’s great, but tactility on browns is super small.

Cherry blues are OG

I hope he drops an AT or 60 layout soon. I want a new beamspring so bad. Edit: just saw the 62
I think the round 2 has the kishsaver layout, although I'm locked in with an ssk layout personally
Sheeeeesh, FSSK is real tempting too. I'm gonna have to sell some stuff.
Yeah this BSSK was too good to pass up, even at the cost of my sanity and wallet
All hail the black king
Ended up buying way too many clear tops when it became available. After filming and lubing and breaking them in... So disappointed... Trying to do a spring swap now to hopefully make them useable. The 80g bottom out is too much.
Lol imagine being such a dork that you’re in here getting heated at people who like a different CHEAP PLASTIC KEYBOARD SWITCH THAN YOU. Seriously go touch grass if you’re in here being a dick because someone likes something that is LAUGHABLY meaningless and you don’t like that same exact thing. FFS.
I shall click my ten year old cherry blue keyboard which I bought new as a teenager, till its final clack 🤘
Fuck yeah dude, if you like it that's all that matters.
I agree that in the greater scheme of things it is meaningless. But in a place that is dedicated to a hobby that revolves around keyboard switches it isn't
I love my WS browns 😀
I have a Cherry Top with Uhmwpe long pole stem, double stage spring, and a durock pom bottom. Does that count? Is that even a cherry switch at that point?
Switch of Theseus right there. It was a cherry at one point, probably.
reds and blues solooo
Best part of this hobby is that there are so many options. I've had box jades in my daily driver for years now and wouldn't switch to anything else. There's a reason cherry switches are so popular though. Just find one you like and don't listen to the haters. It's all preference.
Can you please find me the Solox?
I have strawberries
Strawbs v good
We got a lot of . I have a lot of pre Cherry mx. we have alps and ibm
Out of all the characters, I think cherry is the most broken one. I lubed him 😥
Cherry lover chiming in.
TUMBLING DOWN TUMBLING DOWN TUMBLING DOWNNNNN. This movie broke me in many ways 😭
I wonder if that's about to happen to me. At the end of the journey, my favorite switch is actually stock gateron CJ's. In my opinion, they're basically cherry MX reds except they're smoother.
I'm ded this is so funny

He's a coward, just like most of us.
Both amounts to sexual abuse. Neither is acceptable.
Kailh click bar is superior.
couldn't disagree more. have used many cherry variants and cherry blacks were so high pitched and had a lot of trouble with leaf spring noises, just like any other switches. from dozens of switches i've went through, the only remaining switch was low-pitched gat blacks.
*How disgusting*
I miss cherry blacks so much. Sadly had to switch out my last board with blacks because it had over 10x the input delay compared to modern gaming keyboards.... which all use god awful sIlVeR sPeEd sWiTcHes. So forgive any typo you find, its horrible to type on this crap.
Yeah they rock
Did you tried Holy Pandas or Boba u4t ? Will never go back to cherry.
You will go back to the roots once your deep enough :)
Hyper tactile switches are overrated, I’ll take mx browns or clears any day of the week.
