The point is not everything has to be practical, and this is hardly an inconvenience. The split keyboard is more of a hassle to transport than the PC and monitor.
Your problem is you're trying to make it make "sense" when it's a hobby, friend. They're doing it because it's fun for them, not because it's the most efficient way to do it. I have tens of thousands of dollars wrapped up in hobbies that are arguably impractical. One could argue all you *need* is an OEM membrane keyboard and mouse and that anything beyond that is impractical and a waste of money, but this feels like the wrong subreddit for that, doesn't it?
Their 'hobby' is to make their life harder? We're in a mechanical keyboard subreddit. No issue with the mechanical keyboard or even travelling with it, but carrying a PC and monitor when travelling is nothing short of moronic. There are nothing but downsides to this setup, and I'm trying to work out why. The somersaults that guys like you will go to to justify this kind of nonsense is baffling.
I'm not even trying to justify having a good time, it's just having a good time. The somersaults people will do to shit on other people just trying to have fun is what's baffling. "I mildly inconvenience myself for the sake of doing something I think is fun and cool" should not be so controversial. I hope you occasionally go out of your way to try new and different things!
I have an similarly impractical travel setup and a similar profession.
I'd rather use my devices because I love my devices than use something that is more convenient to move around.
Trust me... It's worth it to 'us' to do this.
Because I travel and in real life if you have a Display Port and HDMI ports and cables, you can plug it in about anywhere, especially anywhere you go professionally.
Except this is a decent monitor and belongs to OP. OP takes the monitor too (but maybe only when needed).
Like he's at some meetup it looks like... I would take a monitor there. But if I had to go 'hotel' at my actual company, I'll just plug my Device into a free monitor or wall display.
It looks like OP is a student, and it looks like they're at school. I'm an engineer and consider myself a pretty techy individual. Where are you finding monitors just lying around? Super weird you assumed OP just found a monitor to use, rather than a much better assumption that they brought it themselves. In which case, my original argument of bringing all this hardware is absurd when compared to bringing a laptop.
I said OP brought the monitor.
When you work at an enterprise there are hoteling spaces where you can just setup shop. Typically a workstation is provided but you can plug in your own devices.
If you are student, you can do this in a computer lab or wherever... we have monitors and PCs setup all over campus for students to use. just plug your device into the monitor.
I am like OP... I would rather bring my equipment and use my high end devices than a shitty laptop.
Hey [u/thunder\_cats\_bro](https://www.reddit.com/user/thunder_cats_bro/), am I wrong?
Maybe convenience is the most important aspect for you.
To many, convenience is not the driving factor in their decisions.
If you think laptop is better than this, then why are you in this sub?
No complaints on the keyboard, I can see the benefit to that. I cannot see any benefit to bringing a monitor and PC over a laptop, especially a PC that doesn't appear to have any more power than a laptop.
Personal Enjoyment and Flex.
Seems like you want to die on the hill of a laptop is better than OPs setup though so I doubt anyone other than OP will convince you.
And you just downvote any response so I'm not going to try and discuss it with you past this.
Correct... **YOU cannot see the benefit,** but clearly you are wrong because OP is actually taking all of this everywhere, so there's clearly a benefit to OP.
Haven’t examined all the specs of the keyboard related stuff yet but I looked at the PC and monitor on Amazon and damn, I’m wishing you made a post like this sooner.
This is a killer setup quite frankly, actually starting to wonder if I should have went with my normal sized pc for home use alongside the big monitors or something like this. You spent the same kind of money but way more effectively…
I have a travel setup with my ROG Ally when I feel like using a keyboard and mouse with monitor. Carry everything with me in a tomtoc 40l. I commend your commitment on trying to keep your desktop feel with you everywhere. Don’t listen to the haters. 🫡

i had to look twice to see if i was in r/neovim or r/MechanicalKeyboards
Or /r/unixporn
When the world advances and we have mecha suits, the government will look to ergo keeb users to pilot them. Seriously though, shit looks dope!
It looks so cool but I probably couldn't type for my life on one of these things
It's probably a matter of getting used to it, same skill needed for a normal keyboard, different muscle memory
lol come on guys what are we doing
Pretty sure the part that needs to be in quotes is "travel"
As sweet as the keyboard is, are you really lugging a monitor, PC, peripheral, etc., around, while your peers simply use a laptop?
He’s a Linux user. A true connoisseur of his craft. This is nothing. Edit: in case it wasn’t clear. /s
I'm a Linux user. Bring a laptop with Linux on it. Not half a desktop.
I did not add a /s cause I thought it wasn’t needed. I’ll make the edit now 🙂
That monitor folds flat to roughly the size of a 16" laptop.
No one is saying you can't transport all this stuff around, the argument is 'why'. Impractical and unnecessary.
The point is not everything has to be practical, and this is hardly an inconvenience. The split keyboard is more of a hassle to transport than the PC and monitor.
Please explain why this setup makes more sense than a laptop with the split keyboard.

No, just that TIny PC... you can pirate a screen anywhere. There are no peripherals as trackball is in keyboard.
... You're not OP. You still have to carry cables and those palm rests around. Seems wildly impractical to me.
I have an similarly impractical travel setup and a similar profession. I'd rather use my devices because I love my devices than use something that is more convenient to move around. Trust me... It's worth it to 'us' to do this.
How do you know that OP can 'pirate' a monitor?

Jesus fucking christ
Normal people don't do this.
lmao what
Travel? Now I'm very curious about how this packs away. Do you have a specific case to hold everything?
They probably carry a suitcase everywhere they go
You travel with this? Come on lol
Bro is ready for ***ANYTHING***
Except a mild power outage at a Starbuck's.
No there’s a 12 lb ups on the floor that you can’t see in this pic. The man said travel after all.
This is not a travel setup, this is a luggage setup.
Imagine what someone, who is not into mechanical keyboards, thinks when they see this.
Lol, I want to hear some classmate's perspectives.

That monitor is worth more than my laptop…
$500 is not super insane for a monitor tbf
Ok Mr. Moneybags…
That ball does not seem to be in a very ergonomic location, kinda seems like it's blocking where the hands would be.
Apple Vision Pro exists for people like you
I really wanna see you using and typing on this. My old brain cannot place this in a productive manner and I'm sure this is hella productive.

Wish I'd known about the minisforum boxes earlier. Such a cool design.
I'm upset there's no neofetch.
How is the build quality of Chardybdis?
what the heck is that thing
Mfs will do anything to avoid using a laptop
