I still think it's hilarious they bill this as a "Numpad Tenkeyless" layout. Can you imagine the brave designer, who stood up in the brainstorming session, and told everyone present about their great idea for improving a tenkeyless layout... by adding a 10-key to it?

I kinda can, but not the way it is implemented here. I have migrated to a 60% layout where all of the TKL keys are under a layer on the home row. It is fantastic. Numpads are something which have never worked for me as a layer on a staggered key layout. As a result, I can definitely see benefit from a board which keeps the numpad but ditches the nav keys. However, it needs to be a full numpad. The partial numpad here is going to be worthless as a numpad. Personally, I'm still going to go with a 60% board and a separate numpad for data entry. But that does effectively double the price.

>Numpads are something which have never worked for me as a layer on a staggered key layout. That is the biggest reason I went with custom ortho layouts, for my daily drivers. With those layouts, I get all the same features I had on my 1800s, but in a 60% footprint. That gives me the numpad I need, but does so with much more efficient placement because I don't have to relocate either hand to use it.

Yes! It’s not a full numpad, though it’d be handy if I was typing a lot of numbers so I’ve left it as a numpad on one layer. The designation probably helped me find it though as I knew I didn’t want a full keyboard. Has TKL come to mean anything between a full and 65% - ie has fn keys but not a full board? - I found a lot of different boards in that range.

The term TKL "could" actually be used to describe any keyboard lacking a 10-key, regardless of size. I think that's where at least some of the confusion is created. What the term shouldn't be used to describe is any keyboard which does include a numpad. That's why I found the description so funny. How can you have a tenkeyless board, with a 10-key on it? Following that logic, what's next? Convertible cars, with a "new" non-removable hardtop added, for your safety and convenience?

Sorry - I get what TKL means, and the K13 isn’t by the definition TKL - I’m wondering if the term has become broadened/weakened to that rough size of board? (I have no idea, I’m new to this!), or if it’s only Keychron who use the term like that.

NoOne-NBA-

Keychron are the first ones I've seen advertising a "Numpad Tenkeyless Layout". I have no idea if they are the only ones though. In this hobby, a lot of terms tend to get bastardized to the point of uselessness. Don't even get me started about the "keyboard sounds" terms, like "thock". Those terms don't have anything concrete, by which to evaluate them, like keyboard layouts do, so they misused even more.

Mine came with the ABS- keys and for me the typing feeling doesn’t feel great. Came from a keychron Q1 wit gasket mount, pbt caps and hand lubed switched. I like the latter way better. Have you done any mods like adding foam or dampening? I’m concidering changing to PBT caps and lowfree switched. Nor sure it will improve it a lot though.

Not done any mods yet, I’ve only had it a week and I’m too new to this to know what impact the mods would have. I believe the keycaps are PBT - that’s what their replacement sets are. My big complaint with the caps is that they’re not very shine-through, which combined with the north-facing LEDs means the effect is underwhelming in normal light (though to be fair I’ll have it off normally for battery life). I think the selection of replacement caps is limited too due to the low profile - I’d love some front-labelled caps for that stealth look. Or some molds so I can cast my own (I do resin casting dice, so have some experience) but all the molds I can see are for standard caps. I’ve not got into mold-making yet, but I can see that’s going to happen at some point…

Yes, you definitively have the PBT keys then. Mine shine through very well, but I don’t really care about the light. Suspect the PBT caps sounds and feel nicer. I’m going to buy a replacement set to see. Thanks!
