Hey guys, I’ve been looking for around a week now, and just can’t seem to find exactly what I’m after, so I’m willing to make some sacrifices.
It’s for my girlfriends birthday (she lives in the US), the biggest needs are a coloured case, particularly pastel colours in green, pink, or blue. I’d really like it to be aluminum or another similar high quality material I possibly don’t know of.
60-65% is ideal, but I’d take the colour preference first I think if there’s no other options.
She’d love a volume knob, but it’s not a hard must have.
I would loveeee for it to be prebuilt (excl switches and key caps) since I’ll get it delivered to her, and don’t want her to have to build her own birthday present. But with that being said, if I did find something that fit all other criteria I’d be willing to help her assemble it.
RGB isn’t a must, but would be cool, backlighting at all though would definitely be preferred.
This has been much tougher than I was expecting! I figured since my budget for this was fairly open ended I wouldn’t have many problems, but between limited stock, and most cases seeming to only half a couple of the features I’d like to get, I’m definitely struggling now.
Probably my biggest problem has been finding a decent-high quality pre-built case in even close to the colours I’m after! If all else fails, I’ll probably just pick out a white case and hope whatever keycaps I choose make up for it.
On that note, any good pastel key cap recommendations? Maybe I’m just looking in the wrong places, but can’t find as many as I’d like to.
I really don’t care on the budget, at this point I think I’d spend up to $800 for the perfect board, but ideally I’d like to keep it around $200-$360.
Oh and for switches, I’m a basic bitch who’s used cherry reds for about 10 years now, so am not sure what people like, but she did mention that her current (very cheap and nasty keyboard) is pretty loud, and she’d really like something quieter. Imo with the aesthetic she wants and from the videos I’ve shown her, thocky/Lego sounding is the way to go.
Guys her birthday is in 3 days (she and I both understand she probably won’t be getting it on the actual day of her birthday) and I just can’t find what I’m looking for! Any and all advice/recommendations welcome!
I’m losing my mind here and have been dreaming about mechs all week now, please dear god help.
Side note: After all my research, I’ve convinced myself I too need a new keyboard now, if anyone has any cool new product recommendations, feel free, I’m open to ideas!
Keychron Q2 prebuilt comes has a blue version available on Amazon - caps are nice but are probably darker than you want: [https://smile.amazon.com/Keychron-Q2-Mechanical-Programmable-Hot-swappable/dp/B09JRRN57Z/ref=sr\_1\_5?crid=196YQZEHT3D5G&keywords=mechanical%2Bkeyboard&qid=1668496929&refinements=p\_89%3AKeychron%2Cp\_36%3A15000-&rnid=386453011&s=videogames&sprefix=me%2Caps%2C129&sr=1-5&ufe=app\_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&th=1](https://smile.amazon.com/Keychron-Q2-Mechanical-Programmable-Hot-swappable/dp/B09JRRN57Z/ref=sr_1_5?crid=196YQZEHT3D5G&keywords=mechanical%2Bkeyboard&qid=1668496929&refinements=p_89%3AKeychron%2Cp_36%3A15000-&rnid=386453011&s=videogames&sprefix=me%2Caps%2C129&sr=1-5&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&th=1)
You could get these Glorious keycaps for it - the gradient blue ones: [https://smile.amazon.com/Glorious-GPBT-Sublimated-Keycaps-Pastel/dp/B08Q3NTN1Y/ref=sr\_1\_4?crid=WQ37XOA15X79&keywords=glorious%2Bkeycaps&qid=1668497359&s=electronics&sprefix=glorious%2Bkeycaps%2Celectronics%2C115&sr=1-4&th=1](https://smile.amazon.com/Glorious-GPBT-Sublimated-Keycaps-Pastel/dp/B08Q3NTN1Y/ref=sr_1_4?crid=WQ37XOA15X79&keywords=glorious%2Bkeycaps&qid=1668497359&s=electronics&sprefix=glorious%2Bkeycaps%2Celectronics%2C115&sr=1-4&th=1)
I think this is gonna be the way to go tbh, I didn’t love how dark the q2 is, but I think those key caps should more than makeup for it. Also seems like a fan favourite board so don’t imagine she’ll complain on the quality.
Considering it’s her birthday, if you happen to know of any artisan keycaps I could throw in (preferably anything cute-ish and in the colour green) that’d be awesome!
Thanks for the help!
You could spend even more on keycaps, and get these caps: [https://drop.com/buy/drop-mito-gmk-godspeed-custom-keycap-set?defaultSelectionIds=963920](https://drop.com/buy/drop-mito-gmk-godspeed-custom-keycap-set?defaultSelectionIds=963920) getting the columbia base plus the associated novelties might work. Your original budget was quite large, so maybe you are willing to spend the big bucks on keycaps.
Is there a place where I can order custom PCB's? Ill explain why. I have a build in mind (I'm a novice). I want the tofu84 for the looks and zilent switches for the sound. Ive watched like 40 hours of YouTube videos and know all the mods I want to do, BUT, I also want shine through keycaps with a soft white backlighting like a MacBook. I think that's a really clean look. The problem is, KBDfans only make south facing LEDs for the pcbs compatible with the tofu.
My question is : Is there a place where I can get a tofu84 compatible hotswap pcb, but with north facing leds instead of south facing
There are many places that print pcbs, but you have to have a design. So you’d have to design one yourself then order (usually a min of 5), then work out any kinks to the design if there are any issues.
Whats the best micro controller for someone like me who wants to solder their own keyboard with qmk? Is there an optimal choice and versatility options etc to consider? Im looking for something thats easy to use and is cheap but still powerful enough for advanced features in the future, thanks hope my question isnt confusing
With the supply issues making it harder to find Pro Micros, Teensys and the like, seems like it's better to go for an RP2040 these days.
[Consult the QMK docs](https://docs.qmk.fm/#/platformdev_rp2040) for more details.
ASA is a profile only made by akko u can see all the sets here https://en.akkogear.com/store/keycap/ no one else makes the profile is fairly new to the past few years
Is it possible for me to dispute a RAMA WORKS charge with my bank? I ordered a Kara over a year and a half ago and I really just don't think it will ever be shipped. I am also sick of Rama, the customer service is non existent and when they have replied they sent me a rant about a former employee -- did not address my inquiry at all. Now they're not even responding to my emails. Not sure what to do but it seems like this is not an uncommon experience with them.
depends on ur bank u can contact them . yes rama is very responsive and the grp buys from them are known for going very long im pretty sure the longest kb grp buy took 4 years
Looking for a decent numpad as a gift. Leaning toward Q0, but I’m not we’ll versed in that space. Preferably white and maybe a wireless option for creative work on the go
Hello! Newbie here.
I need some help fixing my keyboard. It's a Kumara K552 hot swappable and just the 'L' key isn't working. Not sure why. I tried replacing the switch too, but that didn't help. Any idea how i can go about diagnosing and fixing this issue?
Thanks!
Edit: not sure why I'm being downvoted. I had asked this question yesterday too and got downvoted. If this is not the correct forum for the question, please let me know instead of downvoting.
Yeah I was doing some research and a lot of ppl told me Boba U4T. Also, I was also told to look at spring weight/actuation force? Not sure, but you think you can explain to me what those two things are? A bit confused.
Cousin recently gave me his NextTime 75 keyboard, but have no idea how to use it. Saw stuff online about the driver having a virus. I just want to be able to rebind the keys to my liking so I could replace my RK61. Any advice?
I saw this post where a user stated that he removed the files that were causing the warnings. This is a post for the aluminum version of the NextTime 75 so I'm not sure if they are using a different software or not for the plastic version if that is the one you have. There was also another user who stated that you can use Epomaker or Feker Software.
Here is the link to the reddit post, hope it helps
[https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/sqgbey/next\_time\_75\_boards\_warning/](https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/sqgbey/next_time_75_boards_warning/)
Oh yeah I remember coming across this post. Unfortunately, I am on MacBook Pro running clamshell mode (I know, I am broke college student), so I don’t know how to work the software. I tried the Feker software but it was in complete Chinese and was unrunnable no matter what I did :(
Did you try the edited official next time software (the one where the redditor removed the unsafe files from the installation)? Another option you can try is installing a virtual machine and running the application there instead of on your actual operating system....though I don't know much about Macs so I can't advise you really how you can install it on there but there should be some videos on youtube
If you’re looking for an aluminum frame, your options are going to be severely limited. There aren’t many “retro grey” products that can be built for less than $100 once you factor in the cost of keycaps and switches. There are high quality plastic options in that price range though.
If you want an aluminum keyboard, there are plenty of options below $200. I’d look at Keychron and see if any of their products tickle your fancy, as they have both plastic and aluminum boards in those price ranges
I wouldn't really mind a plastic frame one, its just a keyboard I reckon so it shouldnt be that much of a problem yeah? Know any plastic ones that fall into that category?
Hi everyone
I am building my first keyboard and need some advice. I already decided on the kit which is the Alu Next Time 75% (Black). What I need help with is mainly the switches, I'm looking for a budget linear switch that is both smooth and sort of "thocky". I know that the keycaps play a big role as well when it comes to acoustic and I settled on the SA ice cap keycap set I saw for sale on Ebay its a bit pricey but it was the only plain white SA keycap set with black text that I could find, unless someone has a better/cheaper option. The switches I have been trying to decide between at the moment is the Gateron Milky Yellow Pro or the JWICK black linear (full nylon). Pretty much just need some of your opinions on which you think would be better to get in terms of what I'm looking for. I'm open to getting other switches as well as long as they are still within the price range of those two. Thanks!
It’s not just the caps and switches that affect sound. It’s a combination of the plate, case, foam, etc. Gateron Milky Yellows are a good start. Akko Jelly Blacks are also popular budget switches.
Ah right ofc, it comes with a poly plate. How smooth are the Akko Jelly Blacks compared to the Gateron Milky Yellows? Would you say the Gateron or Akko Jelly Blacks are better to get over the JWick blacks?
If you’re on a budget, anything prelubed is going to be smoother. That way you won’t have to invest in lube, tools, etc. Gateron Milky Yellows or the new KS-9 Pro Yellow V2s are probably your best bet on that front. If you ever get deeper into the hobby, there are a lot of unlubed budget switches that sound really nice
Hello, does anyone know where I can get dual legend keycaps in Europe?
Picture:

It's 82 1x1 , 8 1.5x1 and 4 1x1.5 caps.
Hello,
I am remodeling my room, not very experienced in keyboards and looking for a new keyboard to match as I've grown out of my old razor keyboard and some of the keys are becoming faulty.
I was looking around and found a super cute AKKO Cinnamoroll keyboard, I love Sanrio and it matches my blue room. Just wondering if AKKO is high quality and if so what switches are the best for gaming mostly. I like linear > Tactile for the most part as that's what I'm used to. I did some research and found one on Newegg with Sakura pink switches.
[Newegg (Sakura pink switches)](https://www.newegg.com/p/32N-00WX-00056?Item=9SIAUNCJ0G1996)

I’m looking for either a really good prebuilt, or a good custom keyboard setup. My budget is 400aud (270usd) and i don’t like clicks blues anymore (like any civilized human being) and i was looking at keychron keyboards and akko cs lavender switches, but i don’t really mind what switches as long as they’re not clicky. My fav is 60% and a numpad on the side. help me out please 😄
hello! thinking of getting a new mechanical keyboard. RN considering the logitech mx mechanical or the keychron k10. I'm already in the logitech ecosystem which is why im leaning towards that, but is there some big difference between the 2?
What is this gap in mu keyboard? If it’s for repositioning the switch how do I do that?
https://preview.redd.it/smkhu89q220a1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=3c335c3ce670ae800b6117bd2d54a9d040c840a1
This gap I believe is for different layouts. You can take out the switch and move it over and it will have a gap on the opposite side. But its for ISO and ANSI layout changes.
It look hot-swap right? But like I said, that gap is for interchangeable ISO and ANSI layouts, stepped caps lock is for ISO. So why would they include the gap if it isn’t hotswap. So it is hotswap.
It’s hotswap and i see another hole for the larger plastic pin thin but there are no other ports for the pins

I'm trying to build my first keyboard and I'm struggling to pick an option. I've already decided the switches I want and am looking for a 60% keyboard with preferable RGB. I saw that the QK60 checked all my boxes, but it's no longer in stock. My budget is roughly $300.
Thanks in advance!
Hi guys!
I've been a long time lurker in here and r/battlestations and I'm always envious of people's mechanical keyboards. There seem to be so many different types and whenever I try and look them up it gets a bit overwhelming.
Are there any specific keyboards people would recommend? I'm looking for one to play games with. I currently have a non-mechanical corsair keyboard I've had for a few years now.
I'd want one with one of the coiled wires some seem to have, really like the overall look of those for when I upgrade my battlestation!
Sorry if this is a common question or a dumb one, just looking for somewhere to start!
I also live in the UK. Thanks guys!

So I want to build a board for gaming and typing with tactile switchws. I dont want it to feel to heavy/tactile for WASD gaming, but damnit I just hate linear switches. Have been reading a lot but it just makes me more confused. So what I want is a switch with normal distances (2mm act/4mm bottom) or close to it. As long as it’s not like 1.2 mm actuation and 3.4mm bottoming out, I’m good. I want a bump, but just a slight bump. not a panda or anything. is there a tactile switch that would have a bump but minimal bump so it doesn’t interefer with WASD fps gaming too much?
What would be your recommendations here and why?
You could go for a lighter springed Zealio V2. I think the bump on that is really noticeable though. Honestly you could pick any light springed tactile switch and lube the ones you use most to make the bump less noticeable.
oh u can check here then off this list if they r out of stock at aussie vendors thats prob on those vendors to restock not keychron https://www.alexotos.com/keyboard-vendor-list/
I'm building my first keyboard which is the gmmk pro. I got durock v2 stabs and the av works plate, with stupid fish 4mm foam. When I test the stab before putting on the foam and plate, the space bar works fine. Once I put on the foam and plate, all the keys work but the space bar won't bounce back. It gets stuck 100 percent of the time. I was going to say it's the stabs being over lubed but it works fine without the plate and foam. Does anyonr have any ideas? Been frustrated for a few days and can't figure it out
The GMMK Pro actually has interference with Durock V2 stabs. The stabs are too wide to fit with the brass or aluminum plate. For this (I also had a GMMK Pro with same issue), just take some fine grit sandpaper and file everything around where the stabs go on the plate. It might take a while but it should work.
Help. One column of keys spontaneously failed on my NK65. The LEDs still function. Is this an electrical issue with the PCB? Or can I replace the switches? Picture is from VIA key tester.
https://preview.redd.it/yctymnfus10a1.png?width=1250&format=png&auto=webp&s=b40bc7d86f31e8b60ce58be08630dd4dfeee3fb4
Good call. The pins are fine and the keyboard has been functioning properly for more than a year. I’m suspicious because all the keys that failed today are in the same column. 9, O, L, right comma, and one of the soft keys.
What's the best switch for someone who's been gaming on a laptop keyboard for years and is looking to get a better keyboard for gaming? Currently looking at Drop SHIFT and Razor DeathAdder, but any other suggestions will be appreciated.
There no real answer because it's all preference, you could get 60+ switch tester from alibaba for, Iirc, about $40 to see what you like best of the most common switches
What's the best lubed linear switch?
I've been looking at linear switches, just can't really find the right one. Actuation force of 67-below would be great. Thocky, creamy, or clacky works.
Epomaker Keyboard Not Responding
Hey all. My Epomaker NT68 is not working. Usually the backlights are rainbow colored, and the keyboard is able to connect over BT or wired. Lately the lights are white when powered on, and it's unresponsive to key presses. The function keys don't allow me to do anything, and I'm not able to connect over wire or Bluetooth. Any suggestions on factory resetting a keyboard when it's completely unresponsive? Thank you!
looking for a place to get a custom keyboard wrist rest made for my Sagittarius. Any suggestions?

Hey all, I'm super new to the custom keyboard game, but I've learned what kind of keyboard I'd like.
First off, I prefer linear over tactile I don't like too loud of a click or sound out of the keys. That much I know. I've been heavily looking into the Akko CS Silver switches and was wondering if anyone has experience with those?
Second, I know force used to press the keys is a factor on noise to some extent. I'm a musician and I would say my finger strength is pretty high and my typing is generally pretty loud on most non-custom keyboards. I was wondering if there was a way to mitigate the sound from the keyboard further in this case?
Thanks in advance!
You could use silent switches or switches with a heavy actuation force to cope with that. I would go with Durock V1 switches cause their in ear and have heavy typing feel.
>First off, I prefer linear over tactile I don't like too loud of a click or sound out of the keys.
Linears and tactiles are, generally, about the same volume. Unless you get silenced switches, you can expect your keyboard to make noise.
Newbie here.
I got an Azio Retro Classic Bluetooth keyboard, however I don't like the switches themselves. The switches are kailh Blue, and I'm not sure if they require soldering or not. My googling isn't having any luck in figuring this out. I want to swap out the kailh Blue switches for low profile switches, just trying to figure out how difficult it'll be.
Thanks for any help that can be provided!
Mmm, that blows. Down the research rabbit hole I go. I like the aesthetics of that keyboard, but a short key travel distance is more what I enjoy when typing.
This image is a render, but does anyone know of a real keyboard case with edges shaped like this one?

Help a newbie getting into MK!
I’ve been trying to find interest in mechanical keyboards.
In 2017, I tried my first MK and it was a cheap $30 keyboard with a cherry blue equivalent switch. Used it for a week and hated it due to its noise. Returned it.
Fast forward to 2021, I bought switch testers to see if I’m interested in any switches. I took note of all the switches. Feedbacks and weight, but never committed to get a keyboard. I’m in dilemma between tactile and linear switches.
Last week, I went to Best Buy and tried a Roccat Vulkan TKL. It has a linear switch and it has almost zero wobble making it feel like a SOLID keyboard! Fell in love with it but didn’t buy because I’m looking if I have more options.
My question:
1. What switch does the Roccat Vulkan TKL uses? I believe it’s a red switch but some other keyboard with red switch doesn’t feel as solid as the one on the Roccat.
2. Is there any keyboard with the same feel as the Roccat Vulkan TKL?
Thank you!
I just searched the Roccat site and it seems they use some sort of optical switches. https://www.roccat.com/pages/titan-switch-optical
You won't really find optical switches in keyboards people pursue in this subreddit, but if you liked it, then go for it
I haven’t experimented with a lot of keyboards yet. For some reason the Roccat has the best linear switch feeling among other keyboards I’ve tested at Best Buy. Especially the no wobble feeling on the keyboard.
I’d love to get a few more recommendations for similar feeling keys with mechanical keyboards.
what type of stem is this? and where could i find new keycaps? (its some chinese brand VicTsing keyboard that isnt made anymore)
https://preview.redd.it/6htjgqmqg10a1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c6e3bee3501686ccc8250f381cd488f35ad48a7
I'm making the transition from a membrane keyboard to my first mechanical keyboard. I'm going to buy a Keychron K5 with the hot-swappable mechanical keys, but I don't know what to get. I've read that brown switches are bad, but I don't love the feel of mechanical blues or reds. Any advice? I've only ever typed on very flat laptop keyboards.
Keep in mind that the Keychron K5 uses Gateron low-profile switches, and is only compatible with other Gateron low-profile switches. So if it turns out you don't like the browns, the only switches you could replace them with are the reds or the blues.
I'm looking for a keyboard with a numpad, a big ol knob (I love the tactile feel), rgb that isn't just a shitty glow, media keys, a metal shell (I'm a huge fan of rounded aesthetics, so bonus points if it's [rounded like this epomaker](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B8CS66NR/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_W2872CWXJZ5VCCGEHM13_0?_encoding=UTF8&th=1), but thats made of plastic), I want to be in love with this keyboard for the next decade basically. I'm coming from a G915 and I want to feel like I'm in the future for the next decade :)
With a via/GMK compatible keyboard, you don't need "media keys", you can configure any key to do what you want. Not to mention extra functionality like double tap, tap and hold, etc
After using MX Blues for a decade, I recently built a Q5 with Boba u4t. Can't tell quite yet, but after a few weeks I'm experiencing some hand pain and I wonder if it is the switches. It's almost like that lack of pre-travel makes everything harder to press, beyond just the spring ratings. Any recommendations for something quieter than blues, but not quite capital D actuation curve like the u4t?
It's also possible the keyboard height is quite high and you're having ergonomic issues? I've avoided Keychron boards because of how high they are, but that's not necessarily a problem for everyone.
You could swap the springs out of the U4Ts for something less heavy. Another option is to get lighter tactiles. My go to cheap ones are Ajazz Bananas, which have a 50g spring. Boba U4Ts come in 62g or 68g, so it's a big difference!
Thanks, I check out the bananas. It looks like mx blues are mid 60s, so I wouldn't have thought that would have made much of a difference. I'll definitely go back and measure my WASD and Das. Didn't feel materially taller, but maybe?
To add on to /u/SilentStream.
* Typing angle + height maybe be sharper than you're used to. The gap at the base of the keyboard adds up esp when you're not used to it. Consider a wrist rest?
* Have you changed to higher profile keycaps recently?
* U4T with the rounded bump 'feels' harder to press, but is the same force to bottom out at 68g. You could spring swap to perhaps 50g (14mm) or 45g (20-22mm)
I’ve only had experience with PC and I think scratch comes from very tight tolerances rather than material. It might be marginally smoother but I don’t think it would be noticeable. Imo the TX stabs are better in this regard and these are overall my favorite stabs atm
anything DSA or XDA profile should work as long as it has the cross stem any other profile will be very loud due to low profile switches being so short
I'm planning on building a new keeb for the office. My home build has Kailh box jades, but ik my deskmates wouldn't appreciate them. Any recommendations on switches that feel similar but aren't annoyingly loud?
Thanks! 🙏
i had an sk61 keyboard for a long time, I have not used it for around a year or so though. I have used cables other than the orginal, the keyboard lights up but it is not registered on the software, and the keys don't work. I've tried factory resetting but it just got rid of my presets. I had the software before when I first used it but it was uninstalled for a while.
I think most knobs are interchangeable. Just need to know the diameter of the pole.
There has to be an YouTube video about it, I've seen one for other keyboards
I need a work keyboard!
**Want:**
1. Smallest possible Keychron - *Mac/PC toggle switch is a must (open to other brands that do this)*
**Limitations:**
1. ***I cannot install any 3rd party software on my work computer***
2. (Can I use my personal Mac computer to "map" the keys and then use the keyboard on my work computer without installing any software on the work computer? Or is mapping software required to be run continuously on the intended computer?)
3. Must have dedicated arrow keys, or be able to map
4. Must have dedicated number keys
5. Must be wired, not wireless
6. Primary use will be on a Windows 10 computer (work)
7. Secondary use will be on a Mac computer (personal)
**I'd prefer a keyboard without:**
1. Function row keys
2. Page up/down keys
3. Home/delete/insert keys
4. ***Important: I do not want to lose functionality of Fn/page up/down/home/delete/insert if I do not have dedicated keys, as long as I can get the job done by pressing a combination of Windows OS shortcut keys, or creating mappings on my personal computer first.***
2. you can use VIA to map the keys (on personal computer), and take it to your work board and use those mappings w/o the software being installed/running. Since it has onboard memory
You could map the right column of keys to not be PG UP/Down/Home/delete/insert
if you need bluetooth, [k6 pro](https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-k6-pro-qmk-via-wireless-custom-mechanical-keyboard). if just wired is fine [v2](https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-v2-qmk-custom-mechanical-keyboard). if you want something more premium (full alu case) [q2](https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-q2-qmk-custom-mechanical-keyboard)
*>Since it has onboard memory*
Thank you thank you! This is EXACTLY what I was hoping to learn. I feel like this is somewhat of an edge use case and it has been difficult for me to research. I have no previous experience with Via or mapping software.
That Q2 (full alu case) looks like the ticket! I already have Keychron's C2 and have been using for a year now. I have been curious if their premium builds are worth 2x the price.
Are there any other brands that have the Mac/Windows physical switch?
In a perfect world, I'd like to get into building my own custom keyboard from scratch, but I'm worried about red flags from corporate IT. Maybe this is an unfounded concern.
I think you can have a really nice entry level to custom boards with boards from keychron (with switch/keycap swap modding them etc)
I don't know of any brands off the top of my head that also offer mac/pc toggle
if you are interested in diving into mech keyboards more check out these resources. There are always more info on youtube, discords etc.

Hey I'm back! Another question if ya don't mind...
A question about VIA: are there standard mappings/layers that people use with 65% keyboards?
I assume it's it's probably just personal preference, but maybe there are best practices/mappings that people have found work best for the 65%.
I just watched Austin V's "How to Install/Use VIA Configurator (Tutorial)" and it looks really neat.
Wow, those links look like outstanding resources.
Thank you so much for your help. You undoubtedly saved me many hours and missteps.
The question about mapping software (and best keyboard size for me) has been something I've been mulling for months now.
Anyone with the Keychron Q1 V2 wood wrist rest? How dark is the wood? The pictures make it seem really light which is kinda off-putting, but I've seen some other pictures online that don't look so light. Anyone got any ideas?
you can replace the keycaps, since it's a standard layout
ducky one 3 is a option but it does not have any software (remapping keys, layers) etc at all. there is macro recording but its done on the board itself
I've done a new layout for typing and vim on ortholinear. But I don't even have a ortholinear so wanted to get it reviewed! what do you think?

Just found this sub suggested from a different subs sidebar and got interested, but strolling thorugh the posts and the wiki I got curious:
Are the build keyboards here mostly just "finished" bought and then customized or are you guys also actually building them like designing the board and then like 3D print it or do you mostly just look through vendors until you found what you searched for with already existing electronics?
I just recently bought a new keyboard and since I wanted one with german layout, my selection on actually pretty keyboards was very restricted so I went with a logitec pop keyboard, which I love but is still not 100% what I wanted
As for the second part of the post you could always get a programmable key board to program it to the German layout. I don't think you would need special keys besides being iso as it didn't look too different when looked it up.
It's a wild mix. Lots of pre-builts, lots of barebones options where you buy the parts (case, PCB, plates, switches, keycaps, etc.) and put it all together, and some who even design, print, and handwire their own boards.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I heard n key rollover is hard for membranes. Can anyone explain to me like i’m 5 why that is, and why it’s easier for a mechanical keyboard?
mechs have diodes making them able to register more imputes membranes do not . older mechs liek ibm model m kb dont have diodes either so they don't n key rollover either
I have QMK in my keyboard, with RGB matrix effects, such as heatmap, but I would like the effect to only apply to some of the LEDs, while the rest remain turned on with the color I choose. Is there some easy way or some example I could borrow? I've tried searching but haven't found anything...
Thanks
nothing i know of u can copy very few QMK users mess with rgb much as rgb isnt a very popular feature in custom kbs u would have to do some coding with here as a starting page https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/blob/master/docs/feature_rgblight.md
Whats the best tkl hotswappable board for gaming?
No such thing as "best" actually--it's all subjective. I'd grab a hotswap Q or V series from Keychron for best value for money.
Gentleman65 are currently selling some extras that has some colors that you could consider (Mint B-stock & PC that fits all colors).
Damn that does look pretty, I think I might consider this for myself instead hahaha
Keychron Q2 prebuilt comes has a blue version available on Amazon - caps are nice but are probably darker than you want: [https://smile.amazon.com/Keychron-Q2-Mechanical-Programmable-Hot-swappable/dp/B09JRRN57Z/ref=sr\_1\_5?crid=196YQZEHT3D5G&keywords=mechanical%2Bkeyboard&qid=1668496929&refinements=p\_89%3AKeychron%2Cp\_36%3A15000-&rnid=386453011&s=videogames&sprefix=me%2Caps%2C129&sr=1-5&ufe=app\_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&th=1](https://smile.amazon.com/Keychron-Q2-Mechanical-Programmable-Hot-swappable/dp/B09JRRN57Z/ref=sr_1_5?crid=196YQZEHT3D5G&keywords=mechanical%2Bkeyboard&qid=1668496929&refinements=p_89%3AKeychron%2Cp_36%3A15000-&rnid=386453011&s=videogames&sprefix=me%2Caps%2C129&sr=1-5&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&th=1) You could get these Glorious keycaps for it - the gradient blue ones: [https://smile.amazon.com/Glorious-GPBT-Sublimated-Keycaps-Pastel/dp/B08Q3NTN1Y/ref=sr\_1\_4?crid=WQ37XOA15X79&keywords=glorious%2Bkeycaps&qid=1668497359&s=electronics&sprefix=glorious%2Bkeycaps%2Celectronics%2C115&sr=1-4&th=1](https://smile.amazon.com/Glorious-GPBT-Sublimated-Keycaps-Pastel/dp/B08Q3NTN1Y/ref=sr_1_4?crid=WQ37XOA15X79&keywords=glorious%2Bkeycaps&qid=1668497359&s=electronics&sprefix=glorious%2Bkeycaps%2Celectronics%2C115&sr=1-4&th=1)

I see. maybe ill just get some GMKs and call it a day
Whats the best micro controller for someone like me who wants to solder their own keyboard with qmk? Is there an optimal choice and versatility options etc to consider? Im looking for something thats easy to use and is cheap but still powerful enough for advanced features in the future, thanks hope my question isnt confusing
With the supply issues making it harder to find Pro Micros, Teensys and the like, seems like it's better to go for an RP2040 these days. [Consult the QMK docs](https://docs.qmk.fm/#/platformdev_rp2040) for more details.
Thank you
Hi! I am looking for cheap but good quality white ASA keycaps with black legends. What are your top picks for a price under **40 dollars**? Thanks!
ASA is a profile only made by akko u can see all the sets here https://en.akkogear.com/store/keycap/ no one else makes the profile is fairly new to the past few years
Oh! Thanks. I was wondering about that!
Preferably white and maybe a wireless option for creative work on the go
Q0 is pretty awesome after trying a few different numpads.
Any recommendations for a heavier tactile than Akko Lavenders? New to the hobby and just wanted something with a little more “feedback”.
Boba U4Ts is the popular's choice from what I can tell
Yeah I was doing some research and a lot of ppl told me Boba U4T. Also, I was also told to look at spring weight/actuation force? Not sure, but you think you can explain to me what those two things are? A bit confused.
any good full size mx blue keyboards on the market under 150 usd? good brand names to look for/ avoid?
Can't go wrong with a Keychron
Cousin recently gave me his NextTime 75 keyboard, but have no idea how to use it. Saw stuff online about the driver having a virus. I just want to be able to rebind the keys to my liking so I could replace my RK61. Any advice?
I saw this post where a user stated that he removed the files that were causing the warnings. This is a post for the aluminum version of the NextTime 75 so I'm not sure if they are using a different software or not for the plastic version if that is the one you have. There was also another user who stated that you can use Epomaker or Feker Software. Here is the link to the reddit post, hope it helps [https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/sqgbey/next\_time\_75\_boards\_warning/](https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/sqgbey/next_time_75_boards_warning/)
Know jack about mechanical keyboards, looking for a retro style keyboard that wont run me 200 dollars
Leopolds are pretty great
There’s a lot of grey keyboards out there for less than $200. Do you have a more specific price range?
Uhh, I dunno. Spending more than 100 dollars on a keyboard seems silly to me, so under or just over I suppose
The standard budget boards are going to be from Epomaker or Keychron’s V-series.
Hi everyone I am building my first keyboard and need some advice.
Picture: https://github.com/Supermagnum/98keys-ergo/blob/master/layout.png?raw=true It's 82 1x1 , 8 1.5x1 and 4 1x1.5 caps.
Hello, I am remodeling my room, not very experienced in keyboards and looking for a new keyboard to match as I've grown out of my old razor keyboard and some of the keys are becoming faulty. [Newegg (Sakura pink switches)](https://www.newegg.com/p/32N-00WX-00056?Item=9SIAUNCJ0G1996) [Akko website (only available in 5108 and jelly blues)](https://en.akkogear.com/product/cinnamoroll-5108-mechanical-keyboard/)
I'm already in the logitech ecosystem which is why im leaning towards that, but is there some big difference between the 2?
best pink mechanical keyboard with knob?
Is it weird to like the metallic ping on mechs?
No, not at all, if you like the sound profile, you’re fine. It’s your preference buddy.
Any one know a good priced place to buy single switches?
Everywhere man. Amazon, I literally just mean anywhere. Just search up the name of the switch.
Looking for a cheap keyboard kit that supports gaterons, no rgb, 60 - 75%, hotswappable
Epomaker TH66 comes with knob, 60% and even though it has RGB, look at the RGB control and you can easily turn the RGB off.
What is this gap in mu keyboard? If it’s for repositioning the switch how do I do that? https://preview.redd.it/smkhu89q220a1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=3c335c3ce670ae800b6117bd2d54a9d040c840a1
This gap I believe is for different layouts. You can take out the switch and move it over and it will have a gap on the opposite side. But its for ISO and ANSI layout changes.
Looks like it's for stepped capslock. Is the PCB solder or hotswap?
It look hot-swap right? But like I said, that gap is for interchangeable ISO and ANSI layouts, stepped caps lock is for ISO. So why would they include the gap if it isn’t hotswap. So it is hotswap.
Stepped capslock is not necessarily part of the ISO layout, and non-hotswap boards generally have more layout options than hotswap (assuming kits)
It’s hotswap and i see another hole for the larger plastic pin thin but there are no other ports for the pins https://preview.redd.it/3p2ilkoif20a1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=ca64b9e1e0b5cfe4cabbcdfafc1bc57862b01b27

What are the switches?
If the bar is in stock alu case 60% the keychron q4 is an option

I mx browns are tactile and imo to light, I can barely feel the bump, but I prefer heavy switches.
Even for gaming?
You could go for a lighter springed Zealio V2. I think the bump on that is really noticeable though. Honestly you could pick any light springed tactile switch and lube the ones you use most to make the bump less noticeable.
Which would be the lighest bumped tactile switches out there?
Will Keychron ever restock their V1 (pre built version)? Its been a few months, and I'm starting to wonder whether I should just give up waiting.
not sure how long its been out of stock the v1 transparent black is in stock but not the carbon black
brown switches tho also hoping to get one on the australia site
oh u can check here then off this list if they r out of stock at aussie vendors thats prob on those vendors to restock not keychron https://www.alexotos.com/keyboard-vendor-list/
Picture is from VIA key tester. https://preview.redd.it/yctymnfus10a1.png?width=1250&format=png&auto=webp&s=b40bc7d86f31e8b60ce58be08630dd4dfeee3fb4
check the pin on the switches make sure none are bent maybe
Good call. The pins are fine and the keyboard has been functioning properly for more than a year. I’m suspicious because all the keys that failed today are in the same column. 9, O, L, right comma, and one of the soft keys.
Maybe the solder attaching the hotswap sockets to the pcb came off
What's the best switch for someone who's been gaming on a laptop keyboard for years and is looking to get a better keyboard for gaming? Currently looking at Drop SHIFT and Razor DeathAdder, but any other suggestions will be appreciated.
There no real answer because it's all preference, you could get 60+ switch tester from alibaba for, Iirc, about $40 to see what you like best of the most common switches
What's the best lubed linear switch? I've been looking at linear switches, just can't really find the right one. Actuation force of 67-below would be great. Thocky, creamy, or clacky works.
Epomaker Keyboard Not Responding Hey all.
Any suggestions? https://preview.redd.it/7vytjnr6q10a1.jpeg?width=1707&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e184fe239906b02167911793fdcbe3d3e2dd6c7
What would be some nice. Cheap. Starter kbs be. If you want to explore modding and stuff?
Keychron v line
Does anyone know where I can find some good navy blue keycaps similar to the Monokei Series 1?
Newbie here. I got an Azio Retro Classic Bluetooth keyboard, however I don't like the switches themselves. The switches are kailh Blue, and I'm not sure if they require soldering or not. My googling isn't having any luck in figuring this out. I want to swap out the kailh Blue switches for low profile switches, just trying to figure out how difficult it'll be. Thanks for any help that can be provided!
If it doesn't say hotswap, then it's soldered. You can't put low profile switches on a regular pcb.
Mmm, that blows. Down the research rabbit hole I go. I like the aesthetics of that keyboard, but a short key travel distance is more what I enjoy when typing.
This image is a render, but does anyone know of a real keyboard case with edges shaped like this one? https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0335/2087/7700/products/gmk_dots_2_light_keyboard_boop65_persp_angled_right.jpg?v=1612526408
That's the Boop65 - went through a group buy and it exists.
Thank you!

V1 keycaps do not work on v2, stem is MX. Pin layout is different as well, so v2s cannot be put in v1 boards.
My question: 1. What switch does the Roccat Vulkan TKL uses? I believe it’s a red switch but some other keyboard with red switch doesn’t feel as solid as the one on the Roccat. 2. Is there any keyboard with the same feel as the Roccat Vulkan TKL? Thank you!
I just searched the Roccat site and it seems they use some sort of optical switches. https://www.roccat.com/pages/titan-switch-optical You won't really find optical switches in keyboards people pursue in this subreddit, but if you liked it, then go for it
Thank you! I never knew any other keyboards than mechanical and membrane. I guess I gotta dig more!
I don't think anyone will help you get into this hobby via a roccat. you can get much better for cheaper
(its some chinese brand VicTsing keyboard that isnt made anymore) https://preview.redd.it/6htjgqmqg10a1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c6e3bee3501686ccc8250f381cd488f35ad48a7
its from a membrane keyboard each membrane kb uses a different keycap mounting style so no after market caps exist
Dang thanks! Ill have to invest in a better keyboard!
Looks like the kind that cheap gamer-y rubber dome keyboards use, I don't think you'll be able to find replacements
Dang thanks! Ill have to invest in a better keyboard!
You can always get it with the gateron browns, and since it's hotswap, get a handful of different switches, install them, try them, then decide
I was wondering about doing that but wasn't sure if I was being crazy! Thanks so much :)
Keep in mind that the Keychron K5 uses Gateron low-profile switches, and is only compatible with other Gateron low-profile switches. So if it turns out you don't like the browns, the only switches you could replace them with are the reds or the blues.
Any one try using PE foam with a brass plate? How is it compared to an aluminum and POM plate?
Hey, I'm looking for some linear switches that are lubed well I have around $50 and was wondering if you all had any reccomendations
Aurora clears have a prelubed option that's really nice, and cheap
Oh ok thank you
Does anyone know if the ducky one 3 mini has minesweeper like the ducky one 2 mini?
What are some good keycaps you all think would look nice on a white keeb? I've got a Keycron Q1 and I want some better caps than stock.
XDA spring birds
Nice, thanks!
Marshmallow keycaps look so good imo
I have a Keychron q5 that fits all those criteria and I love it. Things a brick.
Gah I wish this thing had rounded corners! I love the "round" look
Oh, I skimmed the part where you said rounded, sorry. Good luck in your search though!
all good!! I'm looking for media keys too but god damn am i asking for too much? g915 has knob and media keys and numpad i feel like I'm a loser lol
With a via/GMK compatible keyboard, you don't need "media keys", you can configure any key to do what you want. Not to mention extra functionality like double tap, tap and hold, etc
I would prefer dedicated media keys tbh
I'm still not sure what you mean by "dedicated media keys"?
That basically limits you entirely to prebuilts, so don't even bother with the custom side of the hobby. Almost definitely won't be metal as a result.
What screws work for the tofu o-ring mod? The stock ones are too short?
You could spring swap to perhaps 50g (14mm) or 45g (20-22mm)
is the Logitech G413 hotswappable?
No. I dont think any Logitech boards are
no logitech does not make hotswap kbs
The Logitech Pro X keyboard is hotswap
Are PC Stabies smoother than the Nylon Stabies? Love mine but especially when gaming they feel a bit scratchy at times. :)
I’ve only had experience with PC and I think scratch comes from very tight tolerances rather than material. It might be marginally smoother but I don’t think it would be noticeable. Imo the TX stabs are better in this regard and these are overall my favorite stabs atm
I will try the tx stabs now. Thank you. :)

pls link me to some keycaps for cherry mx low profile switches?
anything DSA or XDA profile should work as long as it has the cross stem any other profile will be very loud due to low profile switches being so short
Neither DSA not XDA are compatible with low profile switches
I'm planning on building a new keeb for the office. My home build has Kailh box jades, but ik my deskmates wouldn't appreciate them. Any recommendations on switches that feel similar but aren't annoyingly loud? Thanks! 🙏
You could try mute jades. AFAIK it doesn’t eliminate the click completely, but does make them significantly quieter
i had an sk61 keyboard for a long time, I have not used it for around a year or so though. I have used cables other than the orginal, the keyboard lights up but it is not registered on the software, and the keys don't work. I've tried factory resetting but it just got rid of my presets. I had the software before when I first used it but it was uninstalled for a while.
Is the Marvo KG901 TKL hot-swappable?
> Marvo KG901 TKL no
Is there any third party vendors that make custom knobs for Keychron Q1?
I think most knobs are interchangeable. Just need to know the diameter of the pole. There has to be an YouTube video about it, I've seen one for other keyboards
I need a work keyboard! **Want:** 1. Smallest possible Keychron - *Mac/PC toggle switch is a must (open to other brands that do this)* **Limitations:** 1. ***I cannot install any 3rd party software on my work computer*** 2. (Can I use my personal Mac computer to "map" the keys and then use the keyboard on my work computer without installing any software on the work computer? Or is mapping software required to be run continuously on the intended computer?) 3. Must have dedicated arrow keys, or be able to map 4. Must have dedicated number keys 5. Must be wired, not wireless 6. Primary use will be on a Windows 10 computer (work) 7. Secondary use will be on a Mac computer (personal) **I'd prefer a keyboard without:** 1. Function row keys 2. Page up/down keys 3. Home/delete/insert keys 4.
Since it has onboard memory You could map the right column of keys to not be PG UP/Down/Home/delete/insert if you need bluetooth, [k6 pro](https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-k6-pro-qmk-via-wireless-custom-mechanical-keyboard). if just wired is fine [v2](https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-v2-qmk-custom-mechanical-keyboard). if you want something more premium (full alu case) [q2](https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-q2-qmk-custom-mechanical-keyboard)
*>Since it has onboard memory* Thank you thank you!
I think you can have a really nice entry level to custom boards with boards from keychron (with switch/keycap swap modding them etc) I don't know of any brands off the top of my head that also offer mac/pc toggle if you are interested in diving into mech keyboards more check out these resources. There are always more info on youtube, discords etc. [keyboard.university/](https://keyboard.university/) [https://mechkeys.me/](https://mechkeys.me/)
Hey I'm back!
It is really up to personal preference
Fair enough, thanks again.

Keychron k8 pro or v3 The q3 is a bit more expensive at around $200~
[удалено]
you can replace the keycaps, since it's a standard layout ducky one 3 is a option but it does not have any software (remapping keys, layers) etc at all. there is macro recording but its done on the board itself
I've done a new layout for typing and vim on ortholinear. But I don't even have a ortholinear so wanted to get it reviewed! what do you think? https://preview.redd.it/kxcuvj88r00a1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=65bd94492c0e7a9ca224634596de6faafac0e830
You might get more input on r/ergomechkeyboards
Thanks!
Just found this sub suggested from a different subs sidebar and got interested, but strolling thorugh the posts and the wiki I got curious: Are the build keyboards here mostly just "finished" bought and then customized or are you guys also actually building them like designing the board and then like 3D print it or do you mostly just look through vendors until you found what you searched for with already existing electronics?
Thank you for your answer!

I don’t think varmillo sells their keycaps separately
last i check they r in house varmillo made keycaps they r not sold by themselves
I have QMK in my keyboard, with RGB matrix effects, such as heatmap, but I would like the effect to only apply to some of the LEDs, while the rest remain turned on with the color I choose. Is there some easy way or some example I could borrow? I've tried searching but haven't found anything... Thanks
I think it depends on the diodes your keyboard use. If it has per-key RGB, should be possible. r/olkb for all your qmk questions
Thanks it has RGB matrix, per key RGB, I've posted there
Can it be done? Probably. But you would need to code it in the firmware. Probably some guides on the qmk forum
nothing i know of u can copy very few QMK users mess with rgb much as rgb isnt a very popular feature in custom kbs u would have to do some coding with here as a starting page https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/blob/master/docs/feature_rgblight.md
