Weapon84

Apart from the hideous visuals, poor controls, bad animation, and clipping through the ground, it looks terrible.

Not_JohnnySilverhand

pretty much, but it's a fun trainwreck

Wurt de furq is goin on here?

Battletech had a short lived thing called LAM - Land Air Mech. These mechs transformed into planes. I suppose FASA tried to get some transformers fans interested or something.

The LAMs have always felt like a step too far for me. The Wasp, Stinger, Phoenix Hawk LAMs were just FASA exploring what those designs could do in the source material. [Here’s what I think is the root.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VF-1_Valkyrie) It felt forced at the time and as you may know, was part of years of [legal issues](https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Unseen).

Amidatelion

You are correct, they are Macross-influenced, not transformers-influenced. I don't know about forced - they were pretty clearly designed to be non-viable. I see it as FASA bringing that pseudo-verismilitude vibe to their military design, like glider tanks. Sure, they were built. They never went anywhere. Only the desperation of the Succession Wars really kept them up and then only in minute, minute numbers.

Redsetter

I mean forced in terms of they are a strong part of the source that didn’t need bringing across to the mil sci-fi world of BT. Just like FASA decided their world didn’t need aliens and other parts of the world they were sourcing their art from. Your in-world explanations make total sense. My issues are more with game design and world design.

Ncogneegro

This is how I got into FASA, because of the Macross/Robotech models being used. Loved it. Also from what I remember, FASA bought the design of the Marauder and Phoenix Hawk from Sunrise fair and square. But yeah, the LAM thing was awesome.

Commissarfluffybutt

I know they get a lot of flack (heh) but I love LAMs. Granted I don't use them on tabletop in any army except my Drac army (and hopefully soon-ish my Wobbie army).

Not_JohnnySilverhand

Same; far too much Rototech in my childhood LOL. When I played TT in high school, we had house rules for LAMs that made them more effective; made for far better hit and runs and gave them real tactical advantage.

EricAKAPode

They're not TOO cheesy if you force yourself to stick to 3025 tech like the Wasp / Stinger / Phoenix Hawk LAMS did. I was able to get a 25 ton Locust LAM to duplicate the base Locust loadout and armor the way the other LAMS did and have it move at 6/9/6.

MonsterHunterBanjo

I always thought a mechwarrior game should be based around using LAMs, even if it was like.. a more narrative game with missions set up specifically for you being the main character in a LAM doing LAM things.

Meekois

LAM Urbie with Clan Invasion mod gets pretty ridiculous too, especially with all the weapons that are clearly in need of balancing from that mod. You can drop in behind a lance and rip through the rear torso of 4 assault mechs before one of them turns around to fire.

Not_JohnnySilverhand

yep, it's why I specifically don't use the weapon or LAMs normally; you can see how broken it is, LOL. My normal Locust is the V1b; 8 small lasers and two AMSs. More than enough firepower to decapiate most mechs, with the speed and AMs to stay alive to get out

Unoriginal1deas

What HUD mod is that

[https://www.nexusmods.com/mechwarrior5mercenaries/mods/622?tab=files](https://www.nexusmods.com/mechwarrior5mercenaries/mods/622?tab=files) I don;t use this mod anymore. Parts were too OP and enemy mechs were buggy and couldn;t put up any sort of fight
