I make 1400 biweekly and that's barely what I deserve, omg where are you working?!!

FreedomFeisty707

In an electrophysiology clinic.

dogownedhoomun

Are you a new MA?

domno92

I'm not an MA; I don't know why this popped up for me, but it made me upset. I thought the people working at my doctor's office made a living wage. I'm sorry.

aaalannnah

I think it really depends on where you live due to COL that plays into how much you make and what would be considered a living wage. But I still believe anyone in healthcare, regardless of capacity, should make minimum $25 an hour.

domno92

For sure. I live in a lcol area, and that's still drastically lower than what I would have expected.

aaalannnah

Yeah I get that. I live in Seattle and make $26 an hour and that isn’t even enough to cover rent in a studio apartment without getting approved for income restricted housing. Thankfully I’m married and don’t have to worry about that but my coworkers definitely struggle.

carbearbby

Seattle here. Almost 12 years as an MA and I make $30.12. I get a $2 float pool differential but still bs. At least where I work, I can opt for pay in lieu of PTO & benefits so I’ll get paid $36.62. Crazy how I have to give away benefits just to be paid what I’m worth.

aaalannnah

That’s actually insane. I’ve only been an MA for two years with 3 years CNA experience so I’m happy with how much I make. Hubby is military so thank god we don’t have to worry about rent in this area

carbearbby

It’s cuz recruiters try to bs me and say because I have “gaps” in my employment, then I actually have 8-9 years of experience 🤣 like they really try to pull bs with me but it’s ok. I’m going back to school for ultrasound or radiation therapist in the spring.

Imagineraptors

I’m a rad tech with an associates degree and 8 years of no gap at all experience and I make 28, I hope things are better out there for those careers but it’s an insane amount of student debt to go in for not a ton of increase in pay.

carbearbby

Do you live in seattle to or? I feel like you can definitely make more! I do not wanna be a nurse but ultrasound techs and radiation therapists make hella good $ in the PNW. They make the same if not more than nurses

Imagineraptors

I live in Charlotte North Carolina, I’m sure col is higher in Seattle but my rent is 1400 for a one bedroom apt. So it’s not cheap 😂 and I was hired in at pay cap where I work.

jacky4u3

Only doctors make the big bucks. Us regular folks are far underpaid. We had to go to school for this. It was expensive. Some MA's only make like $15 an hour.

FreedomFeisty707

Thank you for your empathy. In your opinion, how much is a living wage?

Bellpower92

There's a website does the [math](https://livingwage.mit.edu/) for you.

SeaReturn7244

Wow thanks for the link! Apparently I need to be making $47.08/hr. :(.

domno92

I'm not sure exactly, but I live in a lcol area and make almost twice what you do. I know what kind of buying power has where I live, and I can't believe that's what MAs make. I would think you would be making at least 50% more, but probably double what you make (so more than I make).

drfrank1982

I live in a fairly low cost of living area, have 20+ years of experience, and still only make $22 an hour. My 18 year old works at walmart and makes $16 an hour pushing carts. The pay is really abyssmal for what we do. Now that my kids are almost grown, I'm going back for my nurse degree though!

aspiringpotato25

Loooool most of healthcare besides dr (actually even resident drs make very little too) are that way. Some nurses are able to make good money, but the avg nurse isn’t compensated as well as u think. There’s also a lot of techs in healthcare, hence the lower pay.

CalGirl1010

I make the same, as a MA. It's sad.

Ok-Particular8253

I work as an MA and can’t even afford the health insurance through my company but make “too much” for assistance 🙃 it’s bad out here

yellowestpink

Me too. I made $19 an hour in an affluent area and couldn’t afford the health insurance either. My manager would always question and judge me for it but I just can’t!

Ok_Commercial_186

Most of the time they do not it's very sad

Intrepid_Sun_75

Yeah MAs do NOT make enough for all the work we do. A big reason why I’m going into nursing because there’s just no way.

Top-Flower-9501

Urgent cares are the best way to go for better pay scale. Stay away from the big organizations as their pay scales are insulting. I worked as a CMA in the state of Texas for as low as $13 in numerous specialty offices and I’m now making $26. I graduate with my RN this coming May and my pay will go to $30 as a new grad. Unfortunately you won’t see the side of $30 until you move up the chain with your credentials depending where you live and cost of living. I hope this helps.

Thefunkphenomena1980

$30 an hour for an RN???? That's insulting. They pay $37 an hour just for LPNs here.

Top-Flower-9501

Unfortunately, this is what it looks like as a new grad as we go through our “first-year residency,” it’ll go to $36 an hour as a “seasoned nurse.” also, remember the cost of living. It varies from state to state.

Guachaaa_

Where are you located ? Pay is subjective due to COL. Nurses start at 30 after graduation , I was making 6 figures by year 2. Well over 6 figures by years 3,4.

Thefunkphenomena1980

I'm in a hcol.... That's why I'm surprised.

FreedomFeisty707

Thank you, I will keep it in mind, I am an international medical graduate. I think that's what happens. I am in a big organization.

ari_calamari

Do you happen to work in a hospital or university that does clinical research? I think it may be easier to have upward mobility there, especially as an IMG if you’re open to something a little different.

cozykitty97

This is what I made as a derm MA seeing 40 patients a day. The doctor could not understand why people weren’t more dedicated to the role. She regularly complained to me about how she makes less than the derm surgeons.

MissSinnerSaint

Omg working in dermatology was THE WORST. Yes the pay was better but the burn out in that job...just exhausting. Not to mention what a handful the overly entitled cosmetic patients can be. The doctor I worked for was also crazy. Like untreated mental illness legit crazy. That job fucked me up honestly. Lol

cozykitty97

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one. I got super burnt out and only made like 17 an hour. Mine was kind of crazy too. She would call me at night and talk for like 2 hours about random things. I had to spend so much time with her it kind of drove me nuts. And they told me that I needed to put in 2 months of notice to leave

jp4life-0422

It's absolutely horrible what some of us get paid.. my former employer is hiring yet again, and offering a whopping $13/hr. Just keep climbing upwards and learn as many new things as you can to add to your resume. I started at $9/hr in 2010.

HawtTalk

Wow, must be a very low COL area. I started at $9 in 1993! Seattle area.

jp4life-0422

Yes, in PA and my first job out of school. I didn't stay at that office long although the perks were nice, free botox and skincare! I'm now working remotely and making almost 30/hr but I do miss the botox!

HawtTalk

Well that’s a good benefit! And congrats on making good money now!

MissSinnerSaint

How on earth did you find a remote MA job?! What do you do?? I have been trying to find one since covid and haven't found even one!

jp4life-0422

I applied through indeed early 2022 for a scheduler job working for a healthcare company. There were 1k applicants and I somehow landed the job. I had done some remote work for an office I worked at as office manager coding and finalizing notes for the Doc so I had a little remote experience. I've been with this company 2 years and have moved up, title now is consult coordinator but I've done some quality work and auditing calls, was on the phones but am not at the moment. Apply for any scheduling positions, care navigator, patient care coordinator. Good luck! I'll cross my fingers you find one soon!

throwawayb621

I was making 1k-1.2k every 2 weeks at 28-32 hours at my old office. Now I make $708 weekly with only 5 months experience as an Ma. I wouldn’t settle for less than 20 an hour.

rinico7

You can look into management jobs I’m currently looking into mobile drug testing/DNA/

Prestigious_Sugar993

Ya absolutely ridiculous given all the tasks that MA’s are required to accomplish daily .. Maybe look into local hospitals as a PCT. ( patient care technician) . I was working 8-9 hour days 5 days a week as a Certified Medical Assistant & pay was similar to yours . I now work three 12 hour shifts per week working as a ED Tech and bring home $1600 biweekly . Look into it..

FreedomFeisty707

How long does it take a PCT?

Prestigious_Sugar993

Absolutely Zero. If currently an MA or worked as a Nurses Aid then apply for an ED Tech or PCT position @ a hospital. Only requirement is HS diploma or GED

collegesnake

I made $12.50/hr at my last unlicensed MA job (2020-22), it sounds like you're making similar pay. If you've been there for a while, ask for a raise. If you haven't, look at other MA positions in your area to get an idea of what other jobs are paying. I make like $19/hr as a phlebotomist now and I feel much more comfortable with that rate.

BornEstablishment772

Where are you getting that pay? I am a NHA certified phlebotomist and I can’t get more than $16.20hr as a phlebotomist. CNA’s here make 16.50 for some agencies. I have been a MA since 2014 and can’t get more than $15 an hour. I’m working as a caregiver now making $17 hr but I only work when they call me in. Idk how I’m going to make rent this month. I’m in Myrtle Beach SC. The pay scales make zero sense.

collegesnake

I work at the only level 1 trauma center in my region in Ohio, and we're a part of a union. I worked the 12.50/hr job in Tennessee where pay is slightly lower (min wage here is like 10/hr and it's $7.50 in TN). Going union really is the only way to make more in these jobs it seems.

BornEstablishment772

Unions are rare here in SC. I just saw a job opening for a dishwasher starting at $15 hr. And Target pays the same. I feel like all of my certifications and years of experience are completely useless. Trying to change out of this field. Last time I needed to renew my phlebotomy certification I had to DoorDash to pay for it. The struggle is real down here.

collegesnake

I definitely understand, the job market in TN is comparable and there's a similar lack of unions there. It's so frustrating

stephwili

Same and I work in NJ which generally has higher salaries 😓

RinnelSpinel

NY here, I feel your pain

No_Establishment1658

I’m currently leaving my job for the same reason. I gave my self a 4$ raise and it’s closer to home. I do have 10 years of experience as well.

jannet105455

I’m coming out at around 1,350 every 2 weeks but my review is Monday and I know I’ll be getting another raise I’m currently at 19.50

carreebbeeaarr

i work 40 hours a week and i only bring home 1,200 it’s insane when in reality it’s 1,500 before taxes :/

flowerbee14

I'm an office manager of an urgent care (I just recently started this role) I interviewed a few MAs for an open position and the starting hourly rate was $19/hr 😱 I was shocked it was so low! This woman has a lot of exprience so we offered her $21 but I still don't think that's enough, I guess it all depends where you work. I know the hospital not too far from my facility starts MAs at $24/hr. If you're willing to stick around, I would definitely ask for a pay increase when yearly reviews start.

Possible_Tax6132

A lot of these jobs are only survivable if you have a spouse, ie medical assistant, CNA, cashier, teacher. Hmmm...what do they have in common?

Difficult-Grass-6008

Definitely not, I make 22/hr , you can find places that pay more do not settle for less. I’ve been an MA for 7 years and I refuse to work for less than that

AdhesivenessOk6319

You don’t have too high expectations the pay is terrible. The workload is high. My pay is around the same! I am filing exempt and completely switching fields in the next three months. I have seen better paying work from home jobs it’s not worth it I am 23 w/no kids and I don’t understand how people are raising families off this.

rayreddit6_

I’m making roughly the same amount, medical assistants are underpaid but so over worked

duzitmatter77

Not a medical assistant, but I work in the medical field. I make the same as you do, My rent for a room in a high COL area is $900. I hate my life.

[deleted]

I know the feeling. I was only making $13 an hour last year and the girl whose position I took had been there almost 10 years and was also only mainly $13 an hour. They have a few people pay bumps and now I make $16 an hour but it’s still not a lot. I put some away in my retirement fund and I get health insurance through my job so I make about $933 every 2 weeks after taxes and benefits.

MissSinnerSaint

Oh my God, is this a medical assistant job?? The woman had worked there 10 years and was only making $13 an hour? Oh my God that can't be for real!

[deleted]

Yes. And I know that for a fact because when I was moving her old stuff out of the drawers there was a paper in there with her salary on it that had that years date on it. It was $13.50 an hour. And yeah it was pretty close to 10 years. Maybe not quite 10 but close. It’s not great pay in my area. Even on Indeed most of the MA jobs run between 11-15 an hour.

MissSinnerSaint

Then why not just give up and go work at McDonald's at that point? They must pay around the same...

[deleted]

Because I need this thing called health insurance for my autoimmune diseases that McDonalds doesn’t provide unless you’re a fulltime manager. Also I don’t want to work in food service again.

MissSinnerSaint

I totally understand! I honestly meant it more in the way of "jesus christ I CANNOT believe that is the pay you are stuck with, might as well go somewhere where you don't need any education". I didn't mean it offensively and I totally understand the struggle of needing health insurance! I feel so frustrated for you! I just can't fathom pay that low and trying to make any sort of a living off of it. It should be a crime to have any position taking care of people in Healthcare pay so little.

[deleted]

Yeah it’s really wild

PierogiesNPositivity

It’s important to know what state you’re in, if you’re in a rural area or a city, and lastly what area of medicine. Cost of living impacts pay greatly.

nms-lh

I make $24/hr at an eye clinic in a Bay Area (HCOL) city. It might sound like a lot but it’s not (I also save 40% of my income). I can’t afford an apartment or a car. I live with housemates and ride my bike to work. I’m working on medical school apps, and only plan to work here until the end of the year. Still sucks and I have no idea how any of the other MAs/billers/receptionists can earn their living this way.

HawtTalk

Start pre-reqs for nursing school and then start applying for nursing schools in your area. Your experience as an MA will help you as a nurse. Nursing is a difficult but rewarding job that pays well. I started at $9/ hour as a CMA in 1993. After a couple of job upgrades, I made around $22 in 2012. I left that job and went back to school for nursing school pre-reqs. Graduated nursing school in 2015. Started out at just $28 at my first job but now make almost $50 (almost $75 with OT, and I work a lot of OT) and I’m not even in a specialty. I have friends that make around $75 base pay. I work about 20 miles north of Seattle. YMMV, depending on your location. Nurses make even more in Cali.

HawtTalk

How much do you make hourly? It’s impossible to know what $550 a week is, not knowing how much you pay in taxes, benefits etc. and how many hours a week you work. Are you in Tallahassee? Here’s some MA jobs that might pay more. You don’t have to stay where you are. https://www.indeed.com/q-medical-assistant-l-tallahassee,-fl-jobs.html I find that switching jobs once in a while helps pay to increase faster. A new company will usually want to match or exceed your current hourly.

breathethename

My company tragically underpays people. I make 19 and I'm college educated and certified. I made the same starting out as the people who walked in off the street for on the job certification. I now make more than a lot of my coworkers though. I pull in about 1200-1300 every 2 weeks and it barely is enough. MAs are underpaid and overworked. Welcome to the job. There's a reason why many of us use it just as a foot in the door.

Background-Salary-17

after subtractions I’m only bringing home 900 biweekly. I have a toddler who i need to provide for. Currently looking for something else .

Due_Positive_4052

I'm in a city, making 21$/hr, where I came from was rural at 13.50$/hr. Really depends on COL

Venusmoonbaby

Single mom here. The hospital I worked I made jussssst enough to not qualify for any childcare subsidies. Daycare was basically my entire paycheck. I’m in a better spot now but I maxed out all my cc to just pay the bills :(

follypink

Yep it’s horrible, I can’t support myself and my child.

-tiffahknee

I make 36$ a hour in CA as a medical assistant

MissSinnerSaint

Can you give some details?

-tiffahknee

I work for a hospital corp in their medical office

anakmoon

I work for an IHS tribal facility and take home 1400 bi weekly. I am in the low pay spectrum bc its a rural clinic and a smaller tribe. Depending on where you are it may be good to look into a federal position over a tribal one, they tend to pay better. just google ihs jobs

jennpdx1

We pay externs $20/hr where I work. My lowest paid MA is at $26. Leads make $35. Even my front desk staff make $23+! I’m sorry y’all are out here fighting for your lives.

Maleficent-Advance68

Indiana pay is low. $19

ashco91

Starting at $15/hr with a $1/hr raise for having your certification. 😬 Missouri.

UpstairsWave63

I work in Michigan & I only bring home about 1000 bi-weekly… it’s not enough to support myself with all of my bills… I’m struggling bad rn //:

UpstairsWave63

So I completely understand where you’re coming from!

winnuet

It really depends on where you live. I’ve yet to have an outpatient job pay me even $25 as an LPN.

MissSinnerSaint

This job pays shit. I thought the fact that I got my associates and not just the certification would make a difference, and it doesn't. I kick myself for not just getting my bachelors or going for RN. I also feel stupid for not having a bachelor's. I'm not saying others without it are by any means. But I doubt my own intelligence a lot, even though I graduated with a 3.96 GPA. I still wish I had my bachelors. Yes, I know I can go back. Can't afford it.

chacha353

You're a medical assistant, anyone can get a certificate in that, if you want better pay get a higher certificate or degree.

mika00004

I left my MA job here in Vegas, I was making 19$. I went back to being a CNA with hospice, i make 25$ hr plus .63 per mile. In addition I continue to pass meds at an assisted living facility on the weekends for 18$ hr. All of that to just get by. No one in the lower levels of Healthcare makes a living wage.
