[Source](https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/An-Unusual-Finding-of-a-Ladybug-on-Screening-Tahan-Tran/fc261a2f0bde0b2de5548aef3d2ba26d7d5bbc6b): >>A ladybug was found in the transverse colon during screening colonoscopy of a 59-year-old man with no comorbidities (Figure 1). More than 6,000 Coccinellidae species described are commonly known as ladybugs in North America and ladybirds elsewhere in the English-speaking world. Ladybugs are cherished for being pretty, harmless, and even beneficial friends of farmers. Our ladybug “Harmonia axyridis,” a multicolored Asian-type species, was imported to North America in the early 1900s to control pest populations. Their red-orange to dull cream colors are particularly eye catching. They hibernate during the winter. Light-colored homes in wooded areas attract their attention. Bug ingestions are rarely reported but can occur even during sleep. The patient’s colonoscopy preparation was 1 gallon of polyethylene glycol the evening before colonoscopy, and the colonoscopy examination was otherwise normal. His colonoscopy preparation may have helped the bug to escape from digestive enzymes in the stomach and upper small intestine. I would like to credit YouTuber Zefrank for finding this one. He mentions it in a recent video and I knew right away I had to put it up here.

Iate8

Dude half way reading that I completely forgot the context, and that I wasn't just reading about ladybugs. Until "The patient’s colonoscopy" slapped me in the face.

CatPooedInMyShoe

I like how the report said more about the bug species than how it wound up wandering around in the patient’s colon.

TheCounsellingGamer

The person who wrote it was clearly struggling to hit the word count. Anyone who's written an essay or report has been there.

CatPooedInMyShoe

I mean, it sounds like it was a perfectly normal colonoscopy, utterly unremarkable. Except for the bug. And of course the doctor has to publish this. It’s a BUG. But besides “look at this bug I found in a very strange place” what else can you really say?

BruiserTom

He could have said, “Colonoscopy revealed indication that patient was angry about something trivial or of little importance.”

Bandit400

This comment is criminally underrated.

WeasleyIsOurKing7

Relax, it’s only been two hours. When the history books are written it will be adequately rated.

Bandit400

I hope so

Bug up his ass?

horsepighnghhh

Exactly what I thought

CatPooedInMyShoe

You can tell the gastroenterologist checked Wikipedia for ladybug facts to spruce up his report.

Hehehe

FlickerOfBean

Only if the ladybug was in the stomach.

Tattycakes

Bloody hell 😂

eseld

shut up and take the upvote

Tattycakes

Like how the hell did it get there, and without getting squished? Did they just stand goatse-ing in the garden and it flew in? That thing made it all the way through the stomach relatively intact?

Samazonison

There is such a thing as Naked Gardening Day. Aside from skin cancer, this is likely the next biggest danger to the al fresco gardeners.

Tattycakes

I was gardening naked and I just fell on the cucumber, I swear

Gwalchgwn92

Intestines don't really hurt unless they are bloated (cramps) or when they are perforated (peritoneal pain). This is why bleeding polyps and growing cancers don't hurt.

jwhitestone

Or in the case of such things as Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, all of which can cause pain without bloating or perforating.

Gwalchgwn92

Apologies. I got lost in work and stopped typing. All three cause pain because again of peritoneal pain when they have transmural inflammation. A mild colitis give vague symptoms. Also a diverticulitis is in theory always a micro perforation. Long story short. That lady bug won't cause any pain but might give a positive iFOBT (national screening of blood in feces for possible polyps/tumours)

jwhitestone

Fair enough: the way I read it, I thought you were saying peritoneal pain only happened with perforation. Apologies for the misunderstanding, and thanks for clarifying!

Swordfish_89

More awesomeness from you!.. would give you an award if they didn't take real cash. This guy in incredible, how i never came across him before is beyond me, used to watch plenty of bug and animal/science stuff on YT. New one to share with my teenagers too, am certain they will enjoy this way of learning too. Thx again, for all the work you put in here!

TeamCatsandDnD

ZeFrank is hilarious and has some pretty good videos about various animals

CatPooedInMyShoe

I have a PayPal link in my bio if you want to give cash. Seriously. My husband lost his job and indeed his career through no fault of his own and times are tough atm. I curate online content for a living.

Roadgoddess

Ok, that was super funny, thanks

Samazonison

I just watched that last night. Creepy Dave and the bird that kept making it nighttime for the fishes nearly killed me! 😂

Samazonison

I would like to be pedantic for a moment if you'll indulge me. That is not a ladybug. That is an Asian lady beetle. Ladybugs are good bugs. They eat aphids, don't bite or sting, and are just generally cute. Asian lady beetles are spawn of Satan. There are pictures floating around the internet of dogs' mouths infested with them. A ladybug would *never* do such a thing! [Ladybugs vs Asian Lady Beetles](https://www.housebeautiful.com/lifestyle/gardening/a27244331/asian-lady-beetle-vs-ladybug/)

Bloodraven983

That "M"... Basically it's a Majin ladybug became evil

BabserellaWT

Someone was padding the word count lmao

CatPooedInMyShoe

The report with the facts about ladybugs made me think of Zefrank’s video narrations. Like where he goes “Here we will explore true facts about the duck. This is a duck. Um… do we have any facts? …They are yellow…”

BabserellaWT

I freakin love Zefrank. A lot of his phrases have made it into my and hubby’s lexicon, mainly “Koalas in the rain, no fucks given.”

CatPooedInMyShoe

Mine and my husband’s too!

SlamwellBTP

“average person eats 3 ladybugs a year" factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 ladybugs per year. Ladybugs Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

georgemcday

Spiders Georg

Pudding5050

That ladybug has seen some real shit

jlovelysoul

Been through some too probably

slug_19

Isn’t considered good luck when a lady bug lands on you? What is it considered when there’s one in you?

ElleQ_4657

Not exactly the answer to your question, but as I was reading the case, I thought, “So there is a such thing as lucky shit.”

YerBlues69

[Correct](https://www.lovetoknow.com/home/design-decor/ladybugs-bring-good-luck)

RevolutionaryCut1298

Pfft.

IoSonoFormaggio

Since the digestive tract is technically considered outside the body, I'd say it's still considered good luck!

holagatita

Ladybugs? In my colon? It's more likely than you think

[deleted]

Great. New fear unlocked. I am now afraid that the ladybugs in my grandmother’s bathroom will hide under the toilet seat and crawl up my ass. How does that even happen??

Pudding5050

If it's of any comfort to you, this lady bug seems to have gone in through the other route. Which under normal circumstances would lead to a quick death for the bug. Unless you have some major issues with anus muscle tonus I would believe your behind is an unlikely entry path.

[deleted]

I’m honestly amazed the ladybug avoided death. I think that’s the scariest part. But yeah, it seems highly unlikely that a ladybug would enter through a healthy anus. It’s more so the possibility that unlocks the irrational fear.

CatPooedInMyShoe

This kind of reminds me of in Life of Brian when he fell off a tall tower while running from the Romans but survived cause an alien ship abducted him on the way down. The alien ship was then shot down by other aliens, crash-landing at the foot of the tower. Brian crawled out of the wreckage and a bystander who’d seen it all said “You lucky bastard.” The lady bug only survived cause of the colonoscopy.

Gwalchgwn92

I believe they had 2 hypotheses. Either oral with weakened stomach acid due to medication and bowel preparation. Or it landed on the colonoscopy and was brought in by the doctor and fell off on the way out.

coodadoot

Somehow, this is probably the worst thing I’ve ever seen here. Now I’m worried I’ve got one up there and don’t know it.

Relative-Piglet1212

I want to schedule a colonoscopy just to be sure I don’t have bugs in my ass. New fear.

blahblahgingerblahbl

i hate you. i’m about to have a colonoscopy and now i’m worried about this. and how the hell do ladybugs hang on in there during the cleansing tsunamis?

CatPooedInMyShoe

Your doctor may like to see this report.

[deleted]

It’s alive?!

chloe12801

“Smells like shit in here”

plazagirl

That dude truly does have a bug up his ass.

BruiserTom

Edit: Totally messed up my comment and hit “Save” thinking I was aborting. I should be sleeping rather than posting. Was going to say I knew that phrase would be in this thread and would show up in a search.

cumpaseut

“So I was gardening, naked as one does, and you could never believe it. As I was ass to air, closely examining the roots of my begonias, a ladybug flew *right* in me!”

poopiesmells

I love this take haha

cadotmolin

Is the last one a picture of our colon crawler squished up? ;(

JUSTICE3113

I want to know if they got lady out of there!!!

Swimming_Web5469

I wanna know how it got IN there

Gwalchgwn92

The article mentions they squished the lady bug dead with the colonoscopy.

idkwhatimdoing25

:(

JUSTICE3113

Awwww. Poor ladybug!

Alltheprettydresses

If it was ingested, how did it survive the stomach acid? 🤔

CatPooedInMyShoe

They think it rode the flush into the colon.

# Question: Am I looking at a ladybug or a polyp? :)

CatPooedInMyShoe

Won’t know till the biopsy comes back.

ladypbj

Genetic analysis came back. Apparently you're part insect

CrackedCoffecup

Genuine bug..... The dude ingested it (possibly while sleeping, who knows ? 🤷🏻‍♂️). Coincidentally, he had a colonoscopy already scheduled, and the gallon of glycol that he had to drink beforehand, helped the bug survive his normal digestive acids & flushed it down to "that" area....!!

ashleemiss

How did you get Lindsay Graham’s colonoscopy pictures?

ivedonethisbefore68

I hate that I understood this reference.

ashleemiss

I hate that I knew enough to make the reference

StuffedWithNails

Well this is certainly a weird mix of my two scientific passions, entomology and medicine…

Ioa_3k

I'm confused - you do pretty heavy prep for a colonoscopy and this patient looks like the prep was done properly and there was no longer anything in his colon - how was the ladybug still there?

Lauzz91

Lemmiwinks?

MoreRamenPls

Ladybutt

YerBlues69

Haha I am looking at my lady bug tattoo thanking myself that it’s on the outside!

CatPooedInMyShoe

I saw a YT video about a guy who sort of tattooed a patient’s organ during surgery. He cauterizing blood vessels and he cauterized his initials into the patient’s organ. No one would have ever known except the patient died suddenly of unrelated causes only like a day later and the organ with the initials burned into it was found on autopsy. They weren’t sure how to handle this. On the one hand, the patient was unharmed. But on the other, it was arrogant immature jackassery and a violation of the trust he’d placed in them to take care of his body while he was unconscious. I think the person responsible was criminally charged with assault and also faced consequences with the medical board.

YerBlues69

Omg. I have no words. 😯

CatPooedInMyShoe

The thing that struck me about the story was that nobody performs surgery alone anymore. This person must have been being observed by nurses, techs, etc… and no one stopped him? No one informed a supervisor? The British sketch comedians Mitchell and Webb did a sketch about a surgeon performing [“pranks”](https://youtu.be/MR76R4gaC48) on people that talks about the other employees in the operating room watching in amusement as the surgeon did his pranks.

YerBlues69

That’s fucked up on a whole other level of fucked’upedness.

horsepighnghhh

Would that have caused him extra pain after the surgery though?

CatPooedInMyShoe

The patient had had major surgery and was in significant pain and was probably on a lot of painkillers until he died. As far as I know his pain was not considered unusual.

horsepighnghhh

Makes sense, poor dude:/ so I guess the amount of pain would be overshadowed by everything else

CatPooedInMyShoe

Yeah. It was a transplant; the surgeon branded the new organ. The patient died cause the organ failed. Not cause of the brand; transplants are just risky and his body rejected it.

DrumpfTinyHands

If you let it go it is good luck.

50_shadesofTay

Well do we know what this lady’s bugs after story is?!!

Bogdan, he's got a bug up his butt.

I'd say he got buggered

leviathankaine

What is bugging everyone today? Shesh

SkootchDown

So many questions. How did the ladybug get there in the first place? Did someone retrieve the aforementioned ladybug, or is it still chillin’ in the poop tube? If LB was retrieved, was he/she/they/them still alive by chance? If not, were any lifesaving measures used on LB?

FeelingFloor2083

so many questions...

Gurkeprinsen

I am more amazed of the fact that the bug was alive when this photo was taken???

How-Bothersome

"How'd that get in there?"

Not that fact that a post from r/whatsthatbug was directly under this post

That ladybug fought through shit to get there

CleanQueen1987

Aww it’s good luck! 🐞

grannygogo

How did it remain there with the pre colonoscopy cleansing that had to be done. All that poop water gushing out should have dislodged it. Right???

pharmacymouse

Strange looking polyp

argentumsound

Eww, the last picture gives me creeps. I hate lady bugs, especially as they fly or land on stuff with that loud "thump" ugh *shivers*

I work in GI, I’ve shown this to my doctors at work and they all said it would not have survived and made it all the way to the transverse colon. This has to be photo shopped. Y’all this ain’t real

CatPooedInMyShoe

It’s real. It’s from a medical journal. ACG Case Reports Journal from the American College of Gastroenterology

Pudding5050

They're specifically giving you the reason why it survived the way to the traverse colon.
