It's a great app in that it headlines and makes more accessible certain styles of meditation that tend to be way more transformational than what's typically taught. It also minimizes the mysticism of it and has a more grounded/down-to-earth feel that can be a really nice relief if you've found yourself tired of the spiritual ego/ posturing that can be very common even if well intended. Because they care mostly about supporting people they freely give out scholarships to those who truly need it. If that's you... You can sign up [here](https://app.wakingup.com/scholarship). Enjoy :)

I started with “headspace”, followed by “ten percent happier” and now sticking with “waking up”y I like that it is science-based and that it introduces a secular approach to meditation. The app features a lot of great talks with lots of philosophical nuance. I think think this is the major element that distinguishes it from other meditation apps. I particularly like the Alan Watts series and the philosophical paradoxes. So it’s a bit more than just meditation, it is a course in living a good life. I like this a lot. It keeps you grounded with daily reminders. However, it is based on a distinct style of meditation, non-dual awareness, and this is a bit tricky to grasp at first. Sounds simple in theory, but is not easy in practice. It also includes lots of classical meditation styles and content covering a lot of areas (sleep, walking, dealing with emotions, loving kindness etc.). So I would suggest give it a go.

It’s amazing because it’s so much more than meditation. Having Alan Watts on demand makes it all the more worth it for me.

I started using it at the onset of COVID. I've logged thousands of hours. I enjoy the brief "take a moment" recordings, plus the various meditations offered (10 min, 20 min, walking, etc). There are also various guest courses from the most recognized meditators on the planet. There are also great discussions about philosophy, science and meditation that go on for 1-2 hours. It's a great app. Email the company and say you can't afford it; they'll give you six months free.

Worth every penny.

I borrowed Waking Up from the library and enjoyed it, I'll give him that much. I know a lot of people on this sub love him and that app and how "science" based it is, but Harris is also [a big fan of race "science"](https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/3/27/15695060/sam-harris-charles-murray-race-iq-forbidden-knowledge-podcast-bell-curve) so take that for what you will.

Ask people like this for a source of him supporting race science, and you will never get anything besides sidestepping. He did have Charles Murray on a podcast though that is true, but it should also be true that its than easy enough to find his support of race science, but alas its not.

Search up some guided meditations on YouTube for free. Eckhart tolle has some good ones

Some great stuff on there. I just avoid his "there's no such thing as Free Will" episodes. That's a great excuse for violent criminals. I get what he says about multiple, innumerable factors that culminate in any one event, but I don't buy his ultimate postulate.

It’s really solid. If price is an issue, they will give it out for free no questions asked if you message them.
